Excellent survey

Though this book celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, it's still one of the best surveys of colonial life out there. Wright examines (reports on might be a better term) such topics as religion; education; literary, dramatic, and music productions; science and architecture; and other factors of daily life in the American colonies during the 1607-1763 period. More concerned with breadth than depth, Wright still offers a fairly comprehensive look at what the chief influences were regarding the topics at hand. He makes up for some of this lack of depth, however, by including a very thorough annotated bibliography for each chapter which should give interested readers many additional sources to investigate; the index is also detailed and very useful. This book is still a very worthy introduction to the cultural life of the earliest settlers on America's shores.
