God's Englishman Oliver Cromwell and the English Revolution, by Christopher Hill

This is a nuanced biography of Oliver Cromwell, breaking down Cromwell's life into different parts: fenland farmer and humble backbencher; stalwart of the good old cause and the New Model Army; key figure of the Commonwealth; and, finally Lord Protector. Hill leads the reader unsentimentally through Cromwell's life from his beginnings in Huntingdonshire to his brutal end. Hill brings all his considerable knowledge of the period to bear on the relationships God's Englishman had with God and England. Such a detailed understanding of the workings of providence is vital to understanding Cromwell.

Dry, assumes you already know quite a bit
By K Watson
I don't have a lot to add to the comments of the previous reviewers. Mr. Douglas Wood remarked, "The book presumes the reader possesses a good bit of knowledge about the English Civil War. References to individual actors, even the less prominent, are often made without context." Mr. Clement Hamer added, "Indeed this book is for the more advanced reader in English and European History." I'm just underscoring those remarks and telling you casual readers wanting something compelling and accessible about Cromwell to leave this one for the real students of history who are already very familiar with the historical background. Most of you will be impatient with the author's throwing around names, incidents and issues without explanation, which you've never heard of. For the historian, Hill's book may actually deserve 5 stars. This is NOT your reads-like-a-novel pageturner bringing England's Civil War and its central figure vividly to life. I believe most readers would rate it my 3 stars and many of you lower than that.

You've been forewarned.

Good read
By Harold G. Birkenhead
very "pro" Cromwell and would have liked to have seen a little more criticism especially when new accounts have been revealed to dispute and place question upon Cromwell's military expertise.

Winning: The Answers: Confronting 74 of the Toughest Questions in Business Today, by Jack Welch, Suzy Welch

In Winning, their 2005 international bestseller, Jack and Suzy Welch created a rare document, both a philosophical treatise on fundamental business practices and a gritty how-to manual, all of it delivered with Jack's trademark candor and can-do optimism. It seemed as if "no other management book," in the words of legendary investor Warren E. Buffett, would "ever be needed."

Instead, Winning uncovered an insatiable thirst to talk about work. Since the book's publication, the Welches have received literally thousands of questions from college students and seasoned professionals alike, on subjects ranging from leadership and global competition to tough bosses and building teamwork. Indeed, questions about virtually every business and career challenge have poured in—some familiar, others surprising, many urgent and probing, and all of them powerfully real.

Winning: The Answers takes on the most relevant of these questions, and in doing so, its candid, hard-hitting responses expand and extend the conversation Jack and Suzy Welch began with Winning. It is a dialogue that is sure to be both compelling and immensely useful to anyone and everyone engaged in the vital work of helping an organization grow and thrive.

Read this book. It doesn't matter whether you read Winning.
By tim747
Whether you read Winning or not, you should check out this book. I purchased a copy of Winning and due to the fact that I had it autographed by Jack and the book is pretty long, I have never read it. I listened to the audio version and found it had some valuable insights, but a lot of filler. (I have read Jack: Straight from the Gut and was impressed enough to join GE upon graduating college.)

If you like Jack and Suzy's column in Business Week, you will like Winning: The Answers. I was able to finish this book on a 3 hour flight. The book is formatted as concise 1-3 page answers to questions readers of Jack's other works have come up with.

The questions are grouped into the main categories of:
-Global competition (China!)
-Leadership (being a better boss)
-Management Principles and Practices (running a business to win / be successful)
-Careers ("On Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of a Promotion")
The above four categories take up ~200 pages.

The remaining two categories take up only ~40 pages: Privately Held, Winning and Losing.

New and old managers should find the chapters on Leadership, Management Principles, and Career progression very useful.

Continuation of "Winning"
By Maxim Masiutin
This book is a continuation of "Winning", published in 2005. If you've found "Winning" exciting and thought-provoking, you will like this book too, but to a lesser extent, since it reiterates or illustrates the philosophy laid down in "Winning", and doesn't add any groundbreaking idea of its own. Nevertheless, there are some interesting questions answered, for example how to work for a company run by a family.

This book continues the topic of interpersonal relations within an organization, the topic that was started by "Winning". Both of the books are not about execution or leadership, but about people and how they communicate with each other within an organization, regardless of rank or seniority. It can be applies to the front-line workers and to the bosses. But, nevertheless, we can see a slight shift of accents between the two books. While "Winning" is more dedicated to managers, "The Answer" is more dedicated to ordinary employees. But it doesn't mean that ordinary employees should not read "Winning" before reading "The Answers". Anyway, good books on interpersonal relations within an organization are very scarce. If you like this topic, I can recommend the books by Ronald Heifetz in addition to this book.

Good Continuation
By R. Saling
I have the Book Winning in print and CD. After listening to it on CD, I had to get the print edition to write notes in the columns and use it as a reference along with his other book "The Four E's of Leadership". This book is a good contiuation of the conversation. If you are a student of successful leaders this book is worth the price. It gives a few more examples of real world situations.

Soul Catcher, by Michael C. White

Augustus Cain is a damaged man haunted by a terrible skill: the ability to track people who don't want to be found. Rosetta is a runaway slave who bears the scars, inside and out, of a life of servitude to a cruel and unforgiving master. Her flight is fueled by a passion and determination only a mother could feel, and she would rather die than let anyone drag her back to hell. In a dark, volatile time prior to the Civil War, fate has bound the hunted and hunter on a remarkable odyssey from Virginia to Boston and back again—an extraordinary test of character and will, mercy and compassion, that will change them both forever.

From Publishers Weekly
White's latest novel (after 2004's The Garden of Martyrs), a sweeping if often predictable saga of Antebellum societal and political tensions, follows Augustus Cain, a down on his luck gambler, wounded Mexican-American War veteran and notorious fugitive slave catcher. After a run of bad luck, Cain accepts an assignment from Mr. Eberly, a wealthy Virginia landowner that Cain's in debt to, to track down two runaway slaves, Henry and Rosetta. Along with three of Eberly's men, Cain sets out on a dangerous journey that takes him from Richmond to New York and Boston. After Cain captures the runaways and turns homeward, the trek becomes a means of redemption for both the soul catcher and his captives, and paints an unsettling portrait of a nation on the brink of civil war. Intercut with the journey are vivid flashbacks of the battle that left Cain crippled. Despite an abundance of stock cameos (a traveling salesman/con artist, wise elderly people who dispense easy advice) and a predictable conclusion, the book succeeds in presenting a fractious era and a host of moral quagmires. Cain—a flawed and coarse antihero—becomes emblematic of a historical moment under White's sure hand. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Like Huck Finn, 17-year-old Augustus Cain lights out for the territory, leaving his father's farm for the adventure of the Mexican-American War. But the carnage of combat strips him of his idealism and the full use of one of his legs, leaving him addicted to laudanum. He soon falls back on his uncanny skill for tracking runaway slaves, vowing after every job that he will give up the occupation. But over the course of decades, his love of liquor and gambling inevitably leaves him low on funds and in need of another job, and so he sets out again, this time in search of Rosetta, a proud, light-skinned house slave dearly prized by her owner. Over the course of the long journey from Virginia to Boston and back, Augustus forges an intense bond with Rosetta, who has suffered sexual abuse and worse at the hands of her owner; for the first time, Augustus is able to fully see the sordidness of his profession. Historical novelist White's heartbreaking story is slow to build but devastating in its final impact. Wilkinson, Joanne

Depth and Action in One Book
By J Martin Jellinek
In Soul Catcher, Michael White has created a complex and fascinating look at the internal search for meaning and truth. His book is set in the antebellum world of slaves and slave-catchers. The main figure, Cain, is a wonderfully developed character of great depth and strength. His biblical name is very apt as one who leaves his settled world, sacrifices all that is dear to him, and enters a new world, protected by God's mark. Rosetta, the main female character, is likewise a very strong character. She is almost Mosaic as she leads Cain through his personal wilderness into a place of self-acceptance.

I did have one problem with the book. It may be a personal grudge, but I was really disappointed when White makes Cain into almost a super-human character. He was shot and stabbed more times than I could count and yet, like the Eveready bunny, he keeps on ticking. This just didn't ring true to me and detracted from an otherwise breathtaking book.

"As Good as Lonesome Dove"
By Talmage Boston
This is as good a story of life in the very rough days of the nineteenth century as I've ever read. The characters are unforgetable. The action is constant. The insight into the human condition is profound. It would make as good a film or TV miniseries as "Lonesome Dove". When I finished the book, I felt like I had ridden every mile, dodged every bullet, and felt every feeling along with Augustus Cain. Don't miss this book if tales of America's days before the automobile are your thing--Talmage Boston

Soul Catcher - A Great Read
By Ghost Writer
Soul Catcher by Michael White
Reviewed by GW

It is truly a joy when a book comes along like Soul Catcher. From the opening chapter until the final sentence, I was mesmerized by this very important piece of work. I could not wait to get home from work and begin reading about this journey of adventure, romance, poker, gunfights, horses, moral conflict, and an absolutely original and terrific plot.
Augustus Cain is a character that will live in the minds of the reader for years to come. All of the characters are memorable. Some of them are down right mean and vicious while others are just trying to adjust to a way of life forced upon them.
When Rosetta a slave escapes from her owner, Eberly, a wealthy tobacco plantation owner, Cain's services are needed. Cain tracks and returns runaway slaves to their owners for money, and he is very good at his trade.
Unfortunately, Cain is forced into this job. Having lost money and the bill of sale for his horse in a poker game, Cain must take the job. Augustus Cain is very dependent upon his horse, and he will do anything to keep him.
Augustus Cain has an adventurous background, and it is revealed throughout the book. The reader will hang onto every phrase in this exciting story as Augustus deals with his past, present, and future.
The two slaves in question by Eberly are Henry and Rosetta. They escaped at the same time, but Rosetta is the main reason Eberly wants the services of Cain. Rosetta will touch the heart of everyone reading the book.
Cain must take the Strofe brothers and a man called Preacher with him to retrieve the slaves. As the journey starts, it is apparent that trouble is brewing down the road. Cain is an intelligent man who reads Milton's Paradise Lost. Cain's comrades lack sophistication and intelligence.
This story is set in Pre Civil War leading up to the beginning of the conflict. Michael White's prose moves like a shark in the water - smooth, engaging, easy to follow and smart.
To give away any more of the plot would be a travesty to avid readers. Rush to the nearest book and track down Soul Catcher by Michael White. Real events are dispersed throughout the book that gives it realism and depth.
It is a reading experience that delivers thought provoking dialogue and issues for anyone interested in the human race and life. Finding the right thing to do with one's life and the journey arriving there is sometimes difficult and filled with moral consciousness and mind challenging events.
I wish someone else in my community would read the book. I want to discuss every aspect and motive within this classic piece of work. It was relevant before the Civil War, and many themes are relevant today.
I have not read a book in a long time that has affected me like this. I think about the characters and the story throughout the day as I go about my job. The relevance and emotional depth that the book leaves with the reader is exactly what books should do. Whether fiction or non fiction, the reader should be left with food for thought and knowledge for conversation.
I highly recommend Soul Catcher by Michael White to anyone looking for substance, significance, and accomplishment. I commend Michael White for creating a story with wonderful characters, just the right amount of action, and a knock out plot for everyone to enjoy.
Augustus Cain has become one of my favorite fictional characters. He has an adventurous soul that lurks inside all of us. However, like Cain, we must strive to find the right path.

From Publishers Weekly
The editors of American Profile magazine asked their readers to submit their favorite holiday recipe, taking the top 250 (of some 1,500 entries) for this compilation covering everything from Valentines Day, Cinco De Mayo and Passover to Groundhog Day, St. Patrick's Day and Easter. Organized by course (appetizer, dessert, side dish, etc.), submissions range from classics such as Spinach and Oyster Dressing to everyday dishes like Tortellini in Sundried Tomato Sauce to holiday-specific recipes, including a questionable concoction called Marcia Emig's Pumpkin Dip, comprised of cinnamon, nutmeg, two packages of cream cheese, a 16 oz bag of powdered sugar and a can of pumpkin ("Serve with gingersnaps"). Tellingly, the grand prize winner, Cranberry Cake with Hot Butter Sauce submitted by Phyllis Willink of Baldwin, Wisconsin, is simple, to the point, and cheerfully decadent. Though all the recipes have clear, concise instructions, some dishes-like the complicated but delicious Christmas Cinnamon Rolls-should probably be left to experienced bakers and cooks. That said, there is something for virtually all tastes and skill levels, ensuring that your next Flag Day will be a tasty one.

The Complete TurtleTrader: How 23 Novice Investors Became Overnight Millionaires, by Michael W. Covel

This is the true story behind Wall Street legend Richard Dennis, his disciples, the Turtles, and the trading techniques that made them millionaires.

What happens when ordinary people are taught a system to make extraordinary money? Richard Dennis made a fortune on Wall Street by investing according to a few simple rules. Convinced that great trading was a skill that could be taught to anyone, he made a bet with his partner and ran a classified ad in the Wall Street Journal looking for novices to train. His recruits, later known as the Turtles, had anything but traditional Wall Street backgrounds; they included a professional blackjack player, a pianist, and a fantasy game designer. For two weeks, Dennis taught them his investment rules and philosophy, and set them loose to start trading, each with a million dollars of his money. By the time the experiment ended, Dennis had made a hundred million dollars from his Turtles and created one killer Wall Street legend.

In The Complete Turtle Trader, Michael W. Covel, bestselling author of Trend Following and managing editor of TurtleTrader.com, the leading website on the Turtles, tells their riveting story with the first ever on the record interviews with individual Turtles. He describes how Dennis interviewed and selected his students, details their education and experiences while working for him, and breaks down the Turtle system and rules in full. He reveals how they made astounding fortunes, and follows their lives from the original experiment to the present day. Some have grown even wealthier than ever, and include some of today's top hedge fund managers. Equally important are those who passed along their approach to a second generation of Turtles, proving that the Turtles' system truly is reproducible, and that anyone with the discipline and the desire to succeed can do as well as—or even better than—Wall Street's top hedge fund wizards.

In an era full of slapdash investing advice and promises of hot stock tips for "the next big thing," as popularized by pundits like Jim Cramer of Mad Money, the easy-to-follow objective rules of the TurtleTrader stand out as a sound guide for truly making the most out of your money. These rules worked—and still work today—for the Turtles, and any other investor with the desire and commitment to learn from one of the greatest investing stories of all time.

From Publishers Weekly
Covel (Trend Following) revisits a famous financial trading experiment conducted by Wall Street trader Richard Dennis and extracts its lessons with mixed results. Dennis, who quickly learned how to trade after starting as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1966 at age 17, had made a reported $200 million by 1983. To settle an argument with fellow trader William Eckhardt about whether trading ability was innate or could be taught, he put an ad in the Wall Street Journal offering to teach candidates how to trade in two weeks, and then backed them with his own money. Of the thousands of people who who applied, 23 turtles were accepted. Their trading made $100 million for Dennis, leading some to become highly successful traders in their own right. Having tracked down most of the people involved, Covel describes the turtle training, including rules for entering and exiting trades as well as Dennis and Eckhardt's personal lessons, and speculates on why some turtles succeeded more than others. However, there are too many characters with competing interests, and many missing facts. Covel's own strong views can also get more emphasis than the voices of the principals. Still, the book is a useful training manual distilling the lessons of a fascinating experiment. (Oct.)

Review
“Tells the ‘real stories’ rather than just the glossy good bits—a thoroughly good read.” (Your Trading Edge)

“This warmly written book brilliantly captures the formation and evolution of the legendary Turtle investment program. It is loaded with wonderful anecdotal insights plus lessons on trading, risk, and life we should all follow. It should be on any novice or seasoned trader’s bookshelf alike. A must read!” (Michael Shannon, Original Turtle)

From the Author

This is the story of how a group of rag tag students, many with no Wall Street experience, were trained to be millionaire traders. Think of Donald Trump's show "The Apprentice," played out in the real world with real money and real hiring and firing. However, these apprentices were thrown into the fire and challenged to make money almost immediately with millions at stake. They weren't trying to sell ice cream on the streets of New York City. They were trading stocks, bonds, currencies, oil and dozens of other markets to make millions.

This story blows the roof off the conventional Wall Street success image so carefully crafted in popular culture: prestige, connections and no place at the table for the little guy to beat the market and beating the market is no small task. Legendary investor Benjamin Graham always said that analysts and fund managers as a whole could not beat the market because in a significant sense they were the market. On top of that, the academic community has argued for decades about efficient markets, once again implying there is no way to beat the market averages.

Yet making big money, beating the market, is doable if you don't follow the herd, if you think outside the box. Anyone does have a chance to win in the market game, but he or she needs the right rules and attitude to play by. And those right rules and attitude collide against basic human nature.

Pulling Back the Veil
By John Forman
The first impression one gets from The Complete Turtle Trader is quite favorable. It is an attractive format, and a pretty easy read, though well written and detailed. The primary text is about 200 pages, which I got through in a single afternoon (though I do read faster than most). And the price tag is extremely reasonable for a hardcover trading book, much lower than what you often see.

This book definitely continues along the path of the trend trading subject of Covel's earlier book, Trend Following, but does so through the story of the famous Turtles. Readers of Jack Schwager's book, Market Wizards, and it's follow-up, The New Market Wizards, will be familiar with the Turtles. They are the result of a nature vs. nurture running debate between famous futures trader Richard Dennis (a Market Wizard) and his partner William Eckhardt (profiled in The New Market Wizards).

The Turtle program was an effort to determine whether traders can be created, developed through training as opposed to having some innate talent for it. This topic has been the subject of debates in trading circles for probably as long as there has been traders. To a certain degree, the classic movie Trading Places, which was released very near the time of the first Turtle program, has at it's core the same theme.

In The Complete Turtle Trader, as the subtitle suggests, Covel tells the story of the Turtles from the selection process which brought together two very diverse groups of people in 1983 and 1984 all the way through to where they are today. It includes a discussion of their training program, their performance, and of course the ideas underlying the system they employed, one based on trend following. The explanation of the latter is pretty direct - definitely enough to give the reader a really good idea of the way the Turtles were taught to trade, which they did very successfully. Figures to that end are provided throughout the text and in supporting appendices. The author also includes comments on how individual traders can apply the Turtle techniques and philosophy themself.

For someone like myself, who first heard about the Turtles through Schwager's writings, this book was a really interesting back-filling of the story. When Schwager was putting his books together, the Turtles and their instructors were very tight-lipped about the details of the experience. In this book, Covel has been able to flesh things out, not just in a kind of history text sort of exposition, but one which includes a great many comments and annecdotes from the participants. It is a tale which really explores the whole perspective of life as a Turtle.

The story Covel lays out offers a great many insights. Obviously, the first one is that learning how to trade, and to make big returns, is possible. Probably the most interesting part of the narrative, though, (in terms of the story, anyway) is what happened to the Turtles after they left the program. It will come as no surprise that the diversity of their backgrounds and personalities has been reflected in the diversity of what they have done over the intervening years. I was particularly enthralled by the discussion of the adjustments they had to make to be successful as big-time money managers, something their mentor Dennis was never quite able to do.

Overall I consider The Complete Turtle Trader a very enjoyable and worthwhile read. It has a lot of elements, and of course trading strategy. I actually found reinforcement of many of my own trading ideas as I was reading, seeing them in a different light. That's not something which happens much after twenty years of trading and reading books and articles on the subject. Of course not everyone is going to find the fullness of the theory or application behind Turtle trading suitable to them, but it is always worth making an effort to learn from those who have achieved success before us, and that's an opportunity this book provides.

I couldn't put this book down. Excellent research combined with detailed facts
By Kcorn
In The Complete TurtleTraders, author Michael W. Covel tells the riveting account of a group of investors who were led by one remarkable man, Richard Dennis (with the help of his partner, William Eckhardt). Dennis was somewhat of an iconoclast, not brought up through the ranks of Fortune 500 company grooming programs, figuring out his own methods for making money.

Dennis was a successful investor who believed that investing
principles could be taught to anyone. His partner, William Eckhardt, disagreed, tending to believe that the talent was inborn. Their differing views formed the basis for a bet between the two men and led to one of the more remarkable experiments in investing history.

Basically, Dennis agreed to find a diverse group of individuals, give each recruit $1 million dollars, put them through two weeks of intensive training, teach them specific investing principles and methods and see how well they'd do after that. To add to the challenge, Dennis and his partner (who agreed to help teach the recruits) hired people from all walks of life.

Exactly how diverse was the group? Well, there was a security guard, a restaurant manger, an unemployed student, a bartender, kitchen cook, teacher and even a prison worker. Covel describes in detail how Dennis
interviewed and selected each recruit, nicknaming them "The Turtles". He also chronicles their 14 days of intensive training. It wasn't easy but the potential rewards were great.

While the account of the Turtles' experiences is reason enough to buy this book, I want to stress that it is more than the story of that remarkable group of individuals. It is also the profile of Richard Dennis, his background and his own conflicting feelings as the experiment
concluded and a second generation of Turtles came along. At times, it is hard to wonder if the Turtles succeeded too well, leading to mixed feelings in Richard Dennis as some of them surpassed him.

Covel also updates readers about some of the Turtles today. The book is so full of investing principles, guidelines and rules that I don't know how anyone with an interest in learning more about investing, trading or finances could pass this one up!

Somewhat Informative, Overly Long
By Loyd Eskildson
"The Complete Turtle Trader" details the story of an experiment to determine if traders were born, not made (or vice-versa), as well as provide a basic foundation in pattern trading. Fundamental analysis (eg. Warren Buffett) is seen as pointless - value is already reflected in an item's price. Instead, trading is based on mob psychology, and is clearly not income-averaging either.

System I: A four-week price break-out was a signal for market entry, and a two-week breakout in the opposite direction a signal for exit. System I was also combined with "filters" to reduce the number of entries. System II instead used an eleven-week breakout to enter, and a four-week signal to exit. There were also a few add-on rules to cover markets that increased over a sustained period of time.

Traders typically used 2% of their funds for each "bet," and were also warned to avoid correlation within their portfolios (increased overall risk). Another risk-limiting rule was to limit themselves to 4-5 "units" of 2% for any one market.

The experiment demonstrated that most anyone could be taught to be a successful traders, and most made considerable profit for both themselves and their funders.

The "bad news" about "The Complete Turtle Trader" is that most of the book is taken up with minute and largely irrelevant details of initial trader selection, personality differences, etc.

In 2005, Uzodinma Iweala stunned readers and critics alike with Beasts of No Nation, his debut novel about child soldiers in West Africa. Now his return to his native continent has produced Our Kind of People, a nonfiction account of the AIDS crisis that is every bit as startling and original.

Iweala embarks on a remarkable journey in his native Nigeria, meeting individuals and communities that are struggling daily to understand both the impact and meaning of the disease. He speaks with people from all walks of life—the ill and the healthy, doctors, nurses, truck drivers, sex workers, shopkeepers, students, parents, and children. Their testimonies are by turns uplifting, alarming, humorous, and surprising, and always unflinchingly candid.

Beautifully written and heartbreakingly honest, Our Kind of People goes behind the headlines of an unprecedented epidemic to show the real lives it affects, illuminating the scope of the crisis and a continent’s valiant struggle.

“At last, an account of the AIDS crisis from the point of view of the people most affected by it—men, women and children of Africa, who are not simply victims but are heroes and scientists as well.” (The Daily Beast)

“A stunning inquiry into the AIDS crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. . . . Iweala evokes the human cost of AIDS, and this is where Our Kind of People excels. . . . . Iweala’s focus on narrative, on sharing voices and experiences, becomes an act of redemption.” (The Los Angeles Times Book Review)

“Iweala’s arguments are well reasoned. By making generous use of the voices of many Africans, Iweala’s writing possesses an immediacy that makes his message powerful and compelling.” (The Boston Globe)

“Iweala tells the stories of those whose lives - and deaths - make up the numbers in a measured, accessible tone. The end of the story of HIV/AIDS is not yet written, but in Our Kind of People we see the beginnings of normalcy.” (Bono)

“In this unassuming but important book, Uzodinma Iweala gives the AIDS pandemic not just a human face but a human voice. . . . Remarkable.” (The Times Literary Supplement)

From the Back Cover

HIV/AIDS has been reported as one of the most destructive diseases in recent memory, tearing apart communities and ostracizing the afflicted. But the emphasis placed on death and despair hardly captures the many and varied effects of the epidemic, or the stories of the extraordinary people who live and die under its watch. On a remarkable journey through his native Nigeria, Uzodinma Iweala opens our minds to these stories, speaking with people from all walks of life: the ill and the healthy, doctors, nurses, sex workers, students, parents, and children. Their testimonies are by turns uplifting, alarming, humorous, and always unflinchingly candid.

At once a deeply personal exploration of life in the face of disease and an incisive critique of our ideas of health and happiness, Our Kind of People goes behind the headlines to illuminate the scope of the crisis and the real lives it affects.

About the Author

Uzodinma Iweala is also the author of Our Kind of People, a work of nonfiction. He lives in New York City and Lagos, Nigeria.

Interesting, but uneven
By S. McGee
Not giving this short look at AIDS in Africa (and specifically, the experience in Nigeria, the author's home country) more than three stars feels a bit churlish. But however moving the individual stories it contains may be, the book itself is far from flawless.

My principal problem with the narrative surfaced early on, when Iweala makes the case that the West has a difficulty in understanding Africa's AIDS crisis because we are blinkered by ages-old prejudices. Certainly, those prejudices exist, especially among those who have never spent any time in sub-Saharan Africa. But Iweala then proceeds to undermine his own case by showing that many of these preconceptions may have some basis in reality. For instance, he discusses the nature of sexual relationships as being more likely to be concurrent than consecutive (he talks to a man who defines fidelity to a girlfriend as cutting the number of his other girlfriends from eight down to four, and then only to one other woman, for instance.) Forget labels and judgments: as Iweala and the physicians he talks to for this book comment, that kind of approach is more likely to result in the kind of dramatic spread of AIDS that the world has witnessed in Africa. He doesn't want traditional African beliefs criticized -- and yet some of those, too, have negatively affected the lives of Nigerians with AIDS, as they are excluded from the community and shunned our of a kind of fear that AIDS is spread via some kind of miasma.

Where does the line lie between the West patronizing Africans by offering assistance and offending them by not doing enough? Iweala refers to African HIV/AIDS activists and their belief that Westerners don't see African AIDS patients "as similar to ourselves and thus deserving of proper medical care." What popped into my mind at that point was the number of Americans I've encountered who view their fellow Americans (of any color) in a similar way: anyone imprudent enough not to provide for health emergencies isn't their responsibility, I've heard it argued. This is a human issue, not simply a West/Africa issue, sadly, although in the case of Africa it may be complicated by history. Still, it isn't specific to Africa; similar perceptions have taken root in Asia at times.

I didn't expect Iweala to provide answers to any of these very difficult questions that lie at the heart of the relationship between Africa and the West -- but given that he raised them, I was disappointed he adopted what struck me as a narrower view. Had the core narrative been stronger, these issues wouldn't have niggled at the back of my mind as they did. Are the portraits of the Nigerians who are battling the disease moving and compelling? Absolutely. Are the tales inspiring. Certainly. Is Iweala's core message -- that we should see each other, positive or negative, African or Western, as humans first and foremost -- important? Without question. Of course we must work to cross these boundaries. But I wonder whether the people who will read this book and respond to that message have already accepted this? How many North Americans and Europeans -- those who are willing to listen -- are going to find that at all revelatory or fresh? Perhaps it's true, however, that some of those observations that I found to be self-evident -- that we all should help those struggling with HIV to simply lead their lives -- are those that bear the most repetition.

What this book does do well is to provide readers with a compelling oral history of AIDS in Nigeria. The portraits of the individuals Iweala encounters are vivid and he does a great job of blending their stories with the necessary facts and figures. Nonetheless, Still, this book didn't accomplish nearly what it could have. By brushing away the difficult questions -- dismissing a CNN story of a town of AIDS orphaned children in Kenya as melodramatic (fair comment) and as being about Kenya and thus irrelevant because Africa is more than just Kenya (well, Kenya is a part of Africa... and the village did exist...) -- Iweala undermined some of what he otherwise accomplished in my eyes.

This probably won't be a majority view, and that's probably just as well, as this is certainly a powerfully human book that deserves readers. Nonetheless, I remain underwhelmed.

So that lives become livable again
By H. Gerety
Iweala is an excellent social critic, and has a way of neatly deconstructing past and present attempts to fight AIDS. While the scope and depth of this book is much smaller, Iweala's ability to point out the flaws in common (particularly foreign) attempts to eradicate AIDS reminded me very much of Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide (Vintage). What he is a bit short on, however - and this might be owing, again, to the scope of the book - is concrete solutions.

I appreciated how current the book was: I remember seeing one particular ad campaign that he criticizes just a year or two ago. I also liked how he succinctly explained how rapidly AIDS has become an "African problem" - because I'm too young to hardly remember it being considered as anything else.

I think my favorite passage in the book, which summed up so much of what's hard about relief efforts of all kinds, discussed how the most help that's needed isn't swooping in and rescuing a dying child in the nick of time - it's helping someone live their life. Their everyday, mundane life - the one we take so much for granted:

"People from Nigeria and abroad don't want to hear that their donations and aid work are going to support another person's ability to do the things we all have to do, but this should be our goal in the struggle with HIV/AIDS: to mitigate its impact so that lives become livable again." (p. 50)

I will admit to being disappointed by Iweala's treatment of sex. While he points out the stereotype of Africans being oversexualized - "We are left to conclude that even if HIV/AIDS isn't the result of someone having sex *with* a monkey, it has certainly spread because Africans were having sex *like* monkeys" (98) - he also capitulates to it, by sweeping away the value of abstinence and/or faithful monogamy with the Nigerian saying that one should wait until marriage, "but body no be wood!" (112) Iweala would probably counter by saying this is true of people everywhere, regardless of place, time, or culture, but it seems nihilistic to give in to the idea that people are merely slaves to their desires. I don't think it would be nearly so palatable, for example, to say that while men should treat their wives with love and respect, we should just be realistic and assume they'll likely beat them.

On a slightly less important note, I appreciated Iweala's vivid rendering of each character's speech - I've never traveled to Africa, but speaking with people who have, Iweala's rendering seems respectful, accurate, and highly evocative of the place where he was and the people to whom he was speaking.

While I didn't agree with Iweala on every point, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I feel like he makes many new, interesting, and necessary points on our attitudes towards AIDS and our efforts at fighting it.

Really????
By DJY51
I lost my best friend to AIDS in 1989, and I still miss him terribly. For years I was terrified of making friends with gay men for fear of losing them. I had lost three friends, and until the anti-retro viral treatments were available, I was worried all the time that other friends would be taken from me. After the cocktail that worked was readily available, my fears dissipated and now I have two friends with HIV/Aids who happily live their lives fully, without the fear (on their part or mine) that they will die a premature death. I've seen the fear it inspires, first hand, how some family members react and how miserable self-righteous prigs see this disease as a punishment from God. But, that was a generation ago. To read a book written today, that details all the crap people had to go thru who had HIV/Aids thirty years ago, as if it were breaking news, is mind numbing. I have known about the devastation HIV/Aids has caused to millions of people in different countries in Africa for almost as long as I knew about it here.
Iweala wrote this book as if it's a relatively new phenomena that needs to be addressed. C'mon. Wake up. This is not new or news. What is important is how millions of people in Africa are denied treatments because of either cost or inaccessibility to locations that administer treatments (the latter situation wasn't even addressed in this book).
There are snippets in this book that are compelling, but mostly it is dated material, poorly and very defensively written. Iweala constantly bemoans how we clump all the people and all the countries in Africa together and make grotesque generalizations. Make that point and move on.
I did, however, love the title of the book. Essentially, it asks, who gets HIV/Aids. And the answer is: People like us. Viewing the crisis that way keeps us from treating those people who are positive as "the other".

From Publishers Weekly
This history of the development of the airplane by Spenser, a former curator of the National Air and Space Museum and author of 747, recasts the Wright brothers' contribution as he widens the scope to aviation history in France, Germany and beyond. Spenser starts with the pioneering work of Yorkshire gentleman Sir George Cayley in the late 18th century, delineates the competitive race between inventors in the early 1900s and culminates (somewhat abruptly) in the world of modern jet airliner travel. Spenser's history reads like a textbook for young, aspiring engineers. Instead of a general chronological approach, Spenser divides the book into sections that each track the development of a different part of the airplane, from the fuselage to landing gear. While this allows him to show how the modern airplane is not a singular invention but rather the cumulative result of thousands of different inventors, trials and errors, it does diffuse the narrative. Still, Spenser's book stands as a smart, and occasionally wonkish, history of a thrilling machine all too often taken for granted. (Nov.)

From Booklist
Spenser organizes his history of the airplane according to the modern machine’s major components––fuselage, wings, tail, landing gear, engine, and so forth. The ungainly look of early contraptions, on view in the included historical illustrations, underscores technical evolution as airplane designers mastered the physical forces of flight. The Wright brothers are important not only for being first aloft but also for conducting the most systematic research into the problem of flight control. Without a fuselage, however, their design was a dead end. The advantage of giving an airplane such a backbone becomes apparent in Spenser’s account of innovations in fuselage construction and of airplane types that embodied them, such as the DC-3. Spencer then explains wings’ transition from wire-trussed support to stronger cantilevered support, the development of piston engines, their replacement by jet engines, and improvements in on-board navigational and engineering instrumentation. A work better suited to readers interested in engineering than to those seeking a purely pictorial history of aviation, this well conveys Spenser’s knowledge of and  enthusiasm for his subject. --Gilbert Taylor

the history of invention is just two words. Missionary Work. The Wright Brother's flew from Kill Devil Hill. Armour Institute,
By Nevada Bob
I enjoyed this book, but credit is not given to God. Lee Deforest was from Iowa , as were the Wrights. Lee Deforest was from a line of Huggenaut missionaries, and the Wright brothers were sons of a Baptist missionaries. This book gives no credit to Armour Institute or the now named Illinois Institute of Technology. Whenever Harvard or MIT graduates needs ideas, they come and teach at Armour Institute or the Illinois Institute of Technology. Evidently Chanute and the Wright Brothers visited the Armour Institute in the early 1900s. As Lee Deforest did, when he had his biggest idea the electronic amplifier while teaching at Armour Institute. If what I say is not true, why did Boeing move its headquarters to Chicago, no 11 miles away from IIT? Why were Fermi Lab and Argonne Laboratories founded just 10 or so miles from Armour Institute and Illinois Institute of Techology? Because as MIT and Harvard graduates have learned, if you need a big idea, come to Armour Institute and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Of course MIT and Harvard graduates never pay for anything, nor give credit to IIT or Armour Institute. The jaws of Hell await for them

One Piece at A Time
By William Holmes
I picked up Jay Spenser's "The Airplane: How Ideas Gave Us Wings" at the airport (how appropriate), and I haven't been able to put it down. Fans of James Burke's "Connections" will find much to like about Spenser's approach. Rather than setting out a chronological history of flight, Spenser explores the history of the airplane's component parts: fuselage, wings, empennage (tail assembly), controls, flight deck, landing gear, propulsion system, cabin comforts and system integration. The book is a bit redundant in spots, but that's to be expected given the overlapping nature of some of the discoveries involved--it's a small price to pay for a refreshing approach to the oft-examined history of flight.

Spenser explains all sorts of interesting things, like why biplanes looked the way they did (it has to do with the Australian invention of the box kite), why the Fokker DVII fighter was the only airplane to be specifically mentioned in the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, why jets have swept wings, why flaps are used to increase the size of an aircraft's wing on landing, and how the pioneers of aviation learned by trial and error (sometimes fatal error) to design and build aircraft that can each carry hundreds of people across continents.

Spenser's narrative is entertainingly attentive to the little quirks of history--for example, the Wright Brothers were accomplished bicyclists, and their understanding of the need to lean into turns and maintain balance contributed directly to their brilliant design of contol across all three axes of flight. The Europeans, in contrast, thought of airplanes as airborne sailing ships or automobiles, which caused them to invent flying bricks that could barely turn and couldn't begin to manage pitch, yaw and roll. By 1908, the Wright's carefull experiments had produced a fully controllable aircraft that could outfly anything anyone else had to offer. The world quickly overtook the Wrights, however, and the history of the airplane since 1908 has been the story of a million strokes of genius, each leading in its own fascinating way to the modern airplane.

Spenser has done a superb job of describing the process by which brilliant and courageous people, exchanging ideas and building on experience, have dramatically changed the world we live in.

A fantastic tale of the fascination of flight
By Edward Durney
Birds do it. Bees do it. But for most of history, people could not. (Not to mention educated fleas.)

Even so, humans have long been fascinated by flight. Through the ages, many men (and women, though Jay Spenser gives little mention to Amelia Earhart and other female aviators) have tried to follow the example of birds and bees. Leonardo da Vinci filled many of the pages of his notebooks with figures of flying machines (all of them, curiously, with flapping wings like a bird's, an idea that never worked but fooled even Leonardo). Now flying machines fill our skies, and flying has become a commonplace to most Americans.

In The Airplane, Jay Spenser gives a history of the technology and the people behind flying. He has a fascination with both. The major figures are there -- the Wright Brothers, Octave Chanute, Charles Lindbergh, Otto Lilienthal. But many other people also make these pages. Hundreds of people. Focusing on the faces of airplane history makes the tale Jay Spenser tells more interesting than a bare history of technology would be.

But technology gets its share of attention. In fact, technology stars, with people playing only a supporting role. Jay Spenser organizes the book to follow, for the most part, different aspects of technology -- wings, landing gear, engines, the fuselage. He fills the book with a lot of pictures, too, which helps a lot in understanding the technology. The pictures are printed right next to the text, not gathered in the center in glossy pages. Still, they are printed well and look good, so the pictures add greatly to the book.

Focusing on those pieces of planes gives a unique, careful look at how technology can develop differently for different functions. For example, the Wright Brothers did a great job on their wings -- providing lift so great that a primitive, hand-built engine could power the plane -- and in controlling the plane in three dimensions. Not so great on their first engine (which could run only for a few minutes), or landing gear (they used skids long after others switched to wheels), or steering system (they used wing-warping, which quickly went obsolete, rather than ailerons). But that huge lift and their control scheme got them off the ground and, for several years, had the Wright Brothers soaring while all others hopped.

The Airplane does have its faults. Just a few examples of things I did not like. The writing was spotty, with some parts harder to get through than others. The last section on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner read like a Boeing public relations person wrote it. The section on engines told how radial engines were different from rotary engines, with the latter quickly fading from the scene, but did not tell the difference between the two (it took a look at the Internet to understand that difference). The reason for the Wright Brothers giving up their huge technological lead gets no mention. All those things could have been done much better.

But no book is perfect. In The Airplane, Jay Spenser tells very well how ideas gave us wings. He tells many tales that I had never heard before, and I have long been fascinated by the history of flight. Well worth reading.
