Brooklynites of varying ethnic and religious backgrounds tell their stories in this oral history of the newly hip New York borough of Brooklyn. Boxer Peter Spanakos, son of Greek immigrants, tells how his brother caught Peter's Olympic teammate Muhammad Ali drinking out of a bidet in their Rome hotel room. Newspaper columnist Pete Hamill talks about the optimism that defined working-class Brooklyn after WWII. Dave Radens's Muslim mother never spoke to him again after he married a Jew, and when the eminent black scholar John Hope Franklin became head of Brooklyn College's history department in 1956. he faced white hostility while looking for a house near campus. Golenbock wrote Bums, an oral history of the Dodgers, and several of his interviewees rhapsodize over the team and Jackie Robinson. Locals will notice that Golenbock lets politicians and developers cheerlead for the controversial Atlantic Yards development while giving short shrift to the opposition. Many of these stories are engrossing and authentic, but also unfocused and rambling. The dearth of female interviewees and younger Brooklynites may limit the book's appeal. Photos. (Oct.)

About the Author
Peter Golenbock is one of the nation's best-known sports authors and has written some of the bestselling sports books of the last thirty years. He recently completed cowriting an autobiography of Tony Curtis and is currently working on a biography of George Steinbrenner. Five of his books have been New York Times bestsellers. Golenbock's first job was in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He now lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Unbelievably good and interesting

This book was mentioned on a website I regularly read, and I reserved it from the library. It is a collection of personal reminiscences from Brooklynites, roughly arranged by decade. However, as many people know, when one mentions "New York in the '70s" one is referring to the heroin years, and the city's decline; and by the '50s one generally means the golden post-war baseball years.
It sounds done to death, but this book captures the magic of Brooklyn that is so evident once you move here. It's full of stories of all neighborhoods, the ones people who don't live here have never heard of. Bay Ridge? Canarsie? Not glamour places, but they have a charm that if you are down to earth, you will feel at home there. I often tell people I never go to Manhattan anymore, and those who are suprised would never want to spend time in Marine Park. But those who have been, they nod and agree, yes, no reason to go to the city much, really.
The reminiscers are out of this world good - Curtis Sliwa, Pete Hamill, Neil Sedaka, various others who basically lived through the exact timeline of the city's expansion, decline, and renewal. Sliwa has many very funny and perceptive comments; another author named Casson tells about being black and from Brownsville in an unforgettable way, and on and on. The only insincere author is Charles Barron, and his self-congratulatory essay I only half read, knowing his long tradition of being divisive. The other authors are all sincere storytellers.
The best book I've ever seen in the genre of "the strange magic of New York." Definitely buy this book, especially if you're moving to Brooklyn.

A Return to My Roots

I moved away from Brooklyn almost 40 years ago,but Brooklyn never left me. Golenbock's book reminds us how special it was to grow up in Kings County. He tells the borough's history from the European Invasions through the 20 aughts.
The oral history method evoked neighborhoods,ethnicities and the socio-economic phenomena that made Brooklyn unique. Of course the 20th century was dominated by the presence and absence of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Golenbock employed that theme to animate the tale of that particual zeitgeist. Of course that was the dominant event in my Brooklyn experience as well.
Golenbock's political stance is also familiar to this reader. It is the way I learned to see things maturing into adulthood there.I am the son of a union man and understand the role unions played in developing a middle class in Brooklyn and America. I also experienced the Ashkenazi-Sephardic division in my families and that further developed my perception of the author's acuity in describing Brooklyn's Jewish roots.
This book is to be read,shared and treasured.

Huge Disappointment

It seemed like an ideal combination: my favorite sports author writing a book about my hometown. I have read maybe 10-15 books by Peter Golenbock, all of them highly enjoyable with "Personal Fouls" perhaps the best sports book of all-time. Because I also own the long out-of-print "When Brooklyn Was The World" which is mostly a picture book, I was looking forward to Golenbock's new detailed history.
Unfortunately "In The Country of Brooklyn" was a huge disappointment. The previously non-political Golenbock litters the book with cheap editorial missives against conservatives and Republicans, many grossly misplaced and irrelevant. The fun begins on page 8. In the chapter about 19th century Coney Island Golenbock writes about the "unchecked greed of the Bush Administration" and from there the far-left zingers just keep on coming.
Quickly it becomes apparent that the pretext for writing "The Country of Brooklyn" is to provide a backdrop for Golenbock to unload political screeds that would have been taboo in his NASCAR and football volumes. The chapter about turn-of-the-century socialist Emma Goldman ("Crushing The Jewish Troublemakers") is somewhat typical: Goldman only briefly lived in Brooklyn, most of her "troublemaking" was done elsewhere.
It is also evident that the first review posted here is only of the jacket cover. If you are looking for an entertaining history about New York's largest borough that provides an escape from the highly-charged partisan politics of today, "In the Country Of Brooklyn" is not that book.
