Review
“In this first installment of a new series, Copeland captures the heart and soul of the West during the 1800s. It’s a tale of good versus bad, with strong faith values included.” (Romantic Times BOOKclub)

entertaining Post Civil War Texas romance
By A Customer
In 1865 Texas the three friends, Willow Madison, Copper Wilson and Audrey Pride all taught school until the Civil War entered Thunder Ridge and the surrounding towns; the Northern army destroyed everything in its march to crush the south.

When the war ended, this section of Texas has become home to poverty. A desperate Madison's ailing Uncle Wallace begs her to marry wealthy Silas Sterling, thirty years her senior, who might have a reason to invest in rebuilding the demolished town. She reluctantly agrees although she feels no attraction to him. Making matters more complex and difficult for Madison is sawmill owner Tucker Gray who she wishes was her suitor, but he holds her culpable for the fire that destroyed his mill.

TWICE LOVED is an entertaining Post Civil War Texas romance starring a courageous heroine willing to sacrifice her desires to help her family, friends, and neighbors in need. When she realizes her heart wants Tucker while her head says Silas, Willow prays to God to guide her as she believes she is giving up her integrity by marrying Silas. The rest of the cast is solid as Silas hopes his fiancée will learn to love him one day; Tucker wants her, but has issues with her; her two teacher friends beg her not to sacrifice herself; finally there is fascinatingly deep yet ironically shallow Uncle Wallace who disguises his real reason for his niece to wed Silas behind his altruism. Americana fans will relish the first Belles of Timber Creek saga with Audrey and Copper to follow.

Avon Inspire delivers another winner
By Deborah
Lori Copeland's book are always enjoyable so I was looking forward to reading her newest historical fiction addition. The premise of women having to fight in the Civil War was quite interesting. They did it out of necessity and no one looks down on them for fighting for survival. It gives a stark contrast to the wealthy women back east who have been enjoying a life of luxury even during the war. Willow and Tucker get off to a bad start right from the beginning and the whole novel shows their rocky relationship. It's interesting to see their chemistry evolve throughout the whole novel. Equally interesting is Willow's relationship with the man she is supposed to marry and the difference in how she treats him vs Tucker.

While I enjoyed this book very much, there were several points I found not to my liking. One, the reason of why the kerosene was in Willow's possession is never fully explained or to the very least she doesn't seem to realize that this was the cause for the fire. Second, Willow would act in the very way that I hate seeing females act in romances. She finds herself tongue tied around Tucker and cannot stand up for herself along him to bulldoze himself over her. After reading so many books with strong females, I just can't stand to see women who let men run over them and then find themselves falling in love with the same man. Otherwise I did enjoy reading this historical novel very much. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as we hopefully will hear about Willow's friends Copper and Audrey. I also am very impressed with the new Avon Inspire line. Every book that has been published so far has been a winner.

Another great one from Avon Inspire
By Margaret C.
As I have said before, I will now say again, I love Avon Inspire, and imprint of HarperCollins. And I absolutely love the covers of their books, not one book has been a disappointment to me yet! The only problem I did have with this cover, (it's beautiful don't get me wrong) the character is described with strawberry blonde hair??? How do I envision her with strawberry blonde, when the cover is very clearly toward an ebony? hmmm... Oh well, discrepancy aside, this is a delightful story.

In my opinion the tale of Willow Madison is right up there with the likes of Tamera Alexander, Tracey Bateman, and Tracie Peterson. Just wonderful and a great read. There were a few sections that seemed to jump in the characters growing, but it flowed well enough and I loved it.

What makes a puppy's day complete?

Swimming and then shaking water all over you. Catching "presents" for you and then bringing them inside the house. Rolling in your nice wool sweater. Snuggling in your lap.

In their second ode to canine companions, Patricia MacLachlan, Emily MacLachlan Charest, and Katy Schneider once again offer an irresistible glimpse into the mischievous canine mind. Captured here are adorable confessions and spirited accounts of the things that puppies do—and don't do—while in search of love, adventure, and treats from the table.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3–Distinct puppy personalities shine through in 14 poems. As in the companion Once I Ate a Pie (HarperCollins, 2006), the free verses are told from each dog's point of view. A small terrier objects to his owner's “Rules” and offers up his own code of conduct: “Drooling is good….Get muddy. Be happy. Howl!” A black Labrador retriever with woebegone eyes staring straight at readers sits in a bathtub and itemizes “What I Don't Like.” The list includes “My food/I like yours better./The mailman/Every single day he comes!” Schneider's striking oil paintings not only capture the impulsive and impetuous nature of pups, but also show such tender moments as newborns, “Born in the soft overcoat quiet of someone's closet,” nestled together. An irresistible treat for animal lovers.Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Wow -- Perfect for Kids or any Dog Lover
By Jennifer Donovan
This is a beautiful, beautiful book. The paintings by Katy Schneider are pure art. The dogs' expressions are perfect.

The text is non-rhyming poetry, but the rhythm is very catchy and appealing.

Not only was I captivated by the beautiful pictures and amused by the text, which is from the dogs' points of view, things that they like or don't like, and of course the title "I Didn't Do It," but so was my six-year-old son. After I read the whole book aloud, he went back that same day, reading some aloud to me, and some to himself. Hearing him read aloud made the perfection of the meter and the beat even more apparent.

Great gift for any dog lover!

Perfect Kid's Poetry Book
By Carey Hagan
The author's previous book along the same lines, "Once I Ate a Pie," is one of my favorite children's poetry books ever. I've given it as a gift several times, and this one is just as good. I've read it with my son, and he's crazy about it. It's thoughtful, funny, diverse [as far as puppies and dogs go] and just delightful. It's one of those titles that works really well for both boys and girls. I highly recommend it for teachers, librarians, and parents. It would make for both good bedtime reading and for a fun gift. Highly recommended!

Just like my dogs.
By shorty
I enjoyed reading this book. This must be how my dogs think also. We often say, "Wonder what they are thinking." Now we know. Well, we might know through this book. I will pass this on to my grandaughter.

Love love love this CD!
By HeatherHH
Love love love this CD! When the kids were small, we played this all the time in the car. Even we (the parents) loved it. Not so schmaltzy like your usual kid fare. We especially liked imitating the voices in "Rat for Lunch." Even now that the kids are older and we don't listen to the CD anymore, phrases from the songs are still in our family lingo. Great times. Great memories.

Sneaker Wars: The Enemy Brothers Who Founded Adidas and Puma and the Family Feud That Forever Changed the Business of Sports, by Barbara S

Sneaker Wars is the fascinating true story of the enemy brothers behind Adidas and Puma, two of the biggest global brands of athletic footwear. Adi and Rudi Dassler started their shoe business in their mother's laundry room and achieved almost instantaneous success. But by the end of World War II a vicious feud had torn the Dasslers apart, dividing their company and their family and launching them down separate, often contentious paths. Out of the fires of their animosity, two rival sneaker brands were born, brands that would revolutionize the world of professional sports, sparking astonishing behind-the-scenes deals, fabulous ad campaigns, and multimillion-dollar contracts for pro athletes, from Joe Namath to Muhammad Ali to David Beckham.

From Publishers Weekly
It's a long road between the Nazi spectacle of Adolf Hitler's 1936 Olympic Games in Munich and the media frenzy of David Beckham's 2007 move to Los Angeles, but there has been one constant during the intervening years of athletic history-sports shoes. This book traces the evolution of Gebrüder Dassler, a Bavarian shoe company founded by two brothers whose vicious feud led to the creation of two rival, iconic businesses: Adidas and Puma. Smit, an international business journalist, delivers a fascinating story of the complicated intrigues in the lives of both companies, as well as the founders and their descendants. The tale encompasses almost ever major sports figure in modern times, from Jesse Owens, (who wore Dassler shoes during the 1936 Games, unaware that the two brothers were members of the Nazi Party), to basketball legend Walt Frazier, whose signature Puma "Clydes" sold "well over one million pairs throughout the Seventies," kick starting the sports shoe-as-fashion statement trend. Overall, Smit provides a necessary account of how the growth in sports-related businesses has moved athletics "from jolly amateurism to unapologetic greed."

Review
“As a history of how so much of the world came to be shod in running shoes, SNEAKER WARS is a book you’ll read at a sprint. Drawing from dozens of interviews and stacks of documents, Ms. Smit reconstructs an anecdote-rich history of competition, commercialism and corruption.” (Wall Street Journal)

“Smit brings a keen reporter’s eye to the schism between Puma and Adidas. The book also ably tells the broader story of the red-hot global sneaker trade.” (Conde Nast Portfolio)

“What does David Beckham’s superstardom have to do with a pair of warring Bavarian brothers in the early 1900s? More than you think, according to this compelling book.” (Time Magazine)

“Barbara Smit deserves high praise.” (Sunday Telegraph)

“First-class piece of investigative reporting... enthralling narrative tale... invaluable contribution to our understanding of shoes, sports, corruption.” (David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author of Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero)

“SNEAKER WARS is great for understanding the ins and out of the industry.” (Bobbito Garcia)

A View into the world of sports shoes and attire
By Blue Roses
Between the pages of this book lie the family saga of two brothers who ended up being torn apart due to war, personality and family. There is not really a happy ending although there is reconciliation among the posterity. Developing a better shoe and running a company are not necessarily the same thing as the players find out in this biography of two major shoe giant companies: Adidas and Puma. Although the book was good, it felt tedious and drawn out in place. I'm sure the author was trying to make sure that all the major players were included but maybe some of them should have been left out in the editing process. This was an interesting read into the world of sports and the attire accompanying the players and teams. Look for everyone from the soccer great Pele' to David Beckham and Joe Montana. I did appreciate the thoroughness that the author devoted to this work.

Three Stripes. Three Stars
By J. A. Walsh
Three stripes. Three stars.

Smit bills her book, "Sneaker Wars," as the story of the family and corporate competition behind Puma and Adidas, but this is an Adidas book and the story of the legendary footwear house divided. Brother versus brother. Father versus son. France versus Germany. Old World versus New World.

Smit begins with skeletal biographies of the founding Dassler brothers: Adolf (Adidas) and Rudolf (Puma). The brothers worked and lived together, but after a World War II falling out, Rudolf struck out across the river on his own, and a rivalry was born. It was a rivalry that would play out over 50 years and three generations; but, one that was dominated by the Adidas corporation and the Adidas personalities, and they equally dominate Smit's work.

The book follows the Adi/Rudolf split and then move on to the division that emerges within Adidas as Adi's son, Horst, sets up a subsidiary - if often antagonistic - France-based branch. Horst cuts his own deals, sets up his own side businesses to inflate his bottom line, and provides the hustle that takes Adidas from a European sporting goods outfitter to a global fashion empire. But, remaining closely-held for many years by some combination of Dassler family members and confidantes, Adidas is a multi-million dollar conglomerate often operating on a shoestring. The family dynamic provides the arc of conflict that sustains Smit's narrative, and her gracious portrayal of Horst Dassler as a visionary 21st century kind of global businessman in a still-flat world is the center of gravity that grounds the meat of the book's middle portion.

Horst emerges as an almost surreal character: gifted and tireless, but perhaps less than ideal in his moral approach to family and business. The story of Adidas during his life is about a house divided between his operation - run mostly autonomously out of France - and his parents' in Germany.

That division theme runs throughout the narrative as surrounding this interesting portrayal of Horst Dassler are the stories of (earlier on) the drama around the split of his uncle and his father, complete with Nazi intrigue and Olympic escapades; and (later on) the series of ownership and management changes that transitioned Adidas from the small family-owned German cleat maker into one of the Western world's most recognizable and marketable brands, and saw conflict between the Old World ownership and US-based management.

There are side trips off into some interesting characters (Muhammad Ali, Pele, Joe Namath, Kobe Bryant), but these fail to deliver in any meaningful way and it becomes clear that Smit really sees this as a Dassler story. That said, she does avoid focusing even on some of the more controversial elements of the Dassler story, for example, the founding brothers' documented ties to Nazism.

A great read for anyone interested in the evolution of sports marketing.....
I have six competitive brothers, but the Dassler boys take the cake when it comes to being creative and vindictive with one another. Fascinating!

Beyond the Body Farm LP, by Bill Bass, Jon Jefferson

There is no scientist in the world like Dr. Bill Bass. A pioneer in forensic anthropology, Bass created the world's first laboratory dedicated to the study of human decomposition—three acres of land on a hillside in Tennessee where human bodies are left to the elements. His research at "the Body Farm" has revolutionized forensic science, helping police crack cold cases and pinpoint time of death. But during a forensics career that spans half a century, Bass and his work have ranged far beyond the gates of the Body Farm. In this riveting book, the bone sleuth explores the rise of modern forensic science, using fascinating cases from his career to take readers into the real world of C.S.I.

Some of Bill Bass's cases rely on the simplest of tools and techniques, such as reassembling—from battered torsos and a stack of severed limbs—eleven people hurled skyward by an explosion at an illegal fireworks factory. Other cases hinge on sophisticated techniques Bass could not have imagined when he began his career: harnessing scanning electron microscopy to detect trace elements in knife wounds; and extracting DNA from a long-buried corpse, only to find that the female murder victim may have been mistakenly identified a quarter-century before.

In Beyond the Body Farm, readers will follow Bass as he explores the depths of an East Tennessee lake with a twenty-first-century sonar system, in a quest for an airplane that disappeared with two people on board thirty-five years ago; see Bass exhume fifties pop star "the Big Bopper" to determine what injuries he suffered in the plane crash that killed three rock and roll legends on "the day the music died"; and join Bass as he works to decipher an ancient Persian death scene nearly three thousand years old. Witty and engaging, Bass dissects the methods used by homicide investigators every day, leading readers on an extraordinary journey into the high-tech science that it takes to crack a case.

From Publishers Weekly
Forensic anthropologist Bass nicely complements his memoir, Death's Acre, with this unnervingly cheerful collection (ably co-written by science journalist Jefferson) of case studies and anecdotes from the field of corpse identification. With careful attention to detail and the occasional darkly humorous aside, the authors describe charred maggot cocoons; the grotesquely dismembered victims of a fireworks factory explosion; and the forensic uses of sonar, scanning electron microscopes and computer databases. Disparaging the CSI effect on jurors who expect DNA testing to be quick and exact,Bass extols the virtues of old-fashioned legwork and gut reactions, though he's always quick to admit when his methods and intuition fall short. The authors keep the narrative flow moving nicely, and Bass's voice is practical, passionate and eminently Southern—and his decades of teaching experience at the University of Tennessee come through strongly in such helpful suggestions as If you decide to murder somebody, don't think that you can completely cover your tracks with fire. Strong-stomached readers who like to get dirt under their nails will gladly follow the UT forensic anthropology team up mountains and into rivers as they put names and faces to long-decayed bodies. 16 pages of b&w photos. Behind the scenes.
By Elaine Finlay
Behind the scenes. That's where the science hides. This book pulls aside the curtain and shows us the beginnings, development and present state of forensic anthropology. Yes it seems to wander at times, but the authors are bringing in a thread of development that is germaine to the end of the story. For mystery and CSI fans, this is a must-read.

Beyond the Body Farm: A Legendary Bone Detective Explores Murders, Mysteries, and the Revolution in Forensic Science
By Amazon Customer
Being a criminal justice student with a focus on the forensic sciences, I found this book to be not only fascinating but very informative. Dr. Bass and Mr. Jefferson have managed to write a non-fiction book that reads like a fiction novel and still manages to inform and teach. I am as thrilled with this book as I am with the three fiction novels that they have written.

Fantasy Economics
By Acute Observer
I received this book as a gift, and found it unreadable. For example, EFS says cost/benefit analysis "is a procedure by which the higher is reduced to the level of the lower and the priceless is given a price". This is meaningless rhetoric to me. It also assumes that only economics provides a guide to human behavior. Or that all economic analysis is totally rational. Schumacher questioned every assumption of "economic science" using theories from the anarchist tradition. Schumacher claimed neocolonialism is the result of politics, not economic principles. But doesn't class and sectional interests drive politics? His advocacy of a search for inward spiritual space, and a rejection of the real world of politics and economics, makes this book part of the problem and not part of the solution.

The 'Introduction' says Gandhi wanted to use "labor-intensive manufacture and handicrafts" (p.5). Milovan Djilas said it was important for newly liberated countries to use mass production ("The New Class"). The historical record over the past centuries should tell you who was right or wrong. Liberating revolutions result in more production and other benefits for the people; else they're not liberating. Unlimited economic growth overlooks the availability of basic resources and the capacity of the environment. But there's always some natural problem that causes a correction.

This is a very verbose book whose arguments rest on unquestioned assumptions. Since it was published in 1973 Thatcher's regime destroyed Britain's coal industry to make them dependent on imported oil and gas. We've seen what happened after they divided and privatized the railroads. But who benefited from these political decisions?

Part II Chapter 3 notes that western Europe "deliberately destroyed nearly half of their coal industries". But the economy in neocolonialist countries will always suffer to benefit the imperialist ruling country. American was a net petroleum exporter until 1967, and influenced Saudi Arabia and Iran (just like Great Britain did previously). You can also consider the actions of Jimmy Carter against nuclear reactors. France and Japan use nuclear power, they have no oil. Saudi Arabia uses nuclear power so they can profitably sell their oil abroad. Those who criticized this book showed good judgment and wisdom. You can read this book and judge its worth for yourself.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—When two friends are in a car accident, one is killed and the other horribly injured and left in a coma. The girls are misidentified, and it's Bridget's parents and boyfriend who sit by the bedside waiting for her to awaken, while Maureen is actually the one alive. When Maureen awakens, it becomes apparent that a funeral was held for the wrong teen. The family of the one who survived is understandably overjoyed, but Bridget's is thrown into chaos. In addition to relearning to walk, speak, and even think properly, Maureen has to deal with the guilt of hurting Bridget's family, the loss of her best friend, and her emerging feelings for Bridget's boyfriend. Mitchard's novel was inspired by a recent national headline, though she changed several of the details. One of the author's strengths is how she moves between the points of view of all of her characters, clearly illustrating the different emotions of the people in the town. She doesn't shy away, either, from the reality of recovering from a brain injury. It is clear that Maureen will never have the same abilities she once did. The romantic relationship between her and Danny seems unrealistic, but it adds an element of normalcy to a story that could otherwise be too tragic and heavy. Girls who love to read melodrama and tragedy will enjoy this novel.—Stephanie L. Petruso, Anne Arundel County Public Library, Odenton, MD

From Booklist
Both 16, Bridget and Maureen, best friends and neighbors in small-town Minnesota, look a lot alike, and when Maureen’s car crashes and the driver dies, everyone assumes that Maureen has been killed and it’s Bridget who lingers in a coma. Later, however, dental records prove that it’s Maureen who has survived, and Bridget’s family and boyfriend must suddenly cope with their grief, while Maureen’s family joyfully helps her through the months of recovery. The situation may be highly dramatic, but details seem to overwhelm the story—along with minutiae of Maureen’s brain injury, therapy, and recovery, come the emotions of the family members who find themselves suddenly in mourning. There’s also Maureen’s relationship with Danny (kind, wise, and totally gorgeous), with whom she has sex. Give this to readers who like descriptive stories; they’ll relish the specifics and be caught up by the tabloid drama, as well as by the survivor guilt that makes Maureen feel as if she’s being punished for living. Grades 8-12. --Hazel Rochman

First half great, second half not so much.
By L. Deal
As one of the other critical review stated, this book was definitely too rushed in the second half. I liked the first half a lot; the similarities between the story and the Whitney Cerak/Laura Van Ryn true-life story were definitely obvious, but not problematically so. The parts with Maureen emerging from her coma are touching and well-written, as is the reveal of the mistaken identity. Once Maureen is out of the hospital, the book goes downhill fast. It hops from today to a year from now to six months later to... you get the idea. The author tries to cover too much time, with too little detail, in too few pages.

I didn't think the "love story" was a necessary addition to the book. I'm sure the reader is supposed to believe Danny when he insists that maybe he was in love with Maureen all along, but I certainly couldn't buy into that idea. One day he's waiting anxiously for the girl he believes to be his longtime girlfriend to awaken, the next day she's awake and not the girlfriend - so he's immediately just as much in love with Maureen as he was with Bridget. It's not believable. I don't blame the characters who accused him of using Maureen as his Bridget substitute, because that's exactly what happens.

I also didn't care for the use of dozens of characters who appeared once or twice then never again, giving us little sense of who is and isn't important in the main characters' lives. One girl is set up as a villain at the beginning, then basically vanishes for the rest of the book. The family members, with the exception of the girls' parents, are virtual strangers to us from beginning to end. I would have much rather had fewer characters and much more character development.

Overall, the book would have been much stronger if we'd learned more about the girls and their friendship before the accident and seen more of Maureen's struggle to cope with the loss of the friendship afterward. As it is, we don't know much about them before the accident, and Maureen seems to seamlessly slip into her deceased friend's role with a definite minimum of grieving and loss. I'm sure there are elements to the Cerak/Van Ryn story that the general public didn't see, but it seems to be a cheapening of their tragedy to basically retell the story but with more emphasis on the "love story" than the loss and learning to live again.

By TeensReadToo
I have read and reviewed many books over the past two years that have impressed me. I have read only a handful, however, that have touched me as deeply as ALL WE KNOW OF HEAVEN. This is a book that's hard to describe in detail, due mainly to the fact that I don't want to give too much of the story away. Suffice it to say, however, that it's a story that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page.

Two girls, Bridget and Maureen, who are so similar and yet so different at the same time. They have nearly identical body shapes, have the same colored hair and eyes, and even share many of the same mannerisms and characteristics. They've been best friends for several years, and yet there's a part of Maureen that understands that Bridget considers her to be her friend out of convenience, and for what she can provide for her.

Then there is an accident, a deadly one, and the lives of two girls and their families are forever changed. One girl dies, one girl lives. One family buries their daughter, one rejoices and yet fears over the fact that their daughter, now forever changed, lies unconscious and unknowing in a hospitable bed. Yet through it all, interspersed throughout the pages of the story, are the tangled thoughts of a young woman, who is unable to grasp even the simplest words and put them to the images she sees, yet who understands the concept that she's not the girl everyone seems to think she is.

The wrong daughter buried, the wrong family rejoicing. Fear, regret, heartbreak, happiness, hope -- and with it all, through it all, tinged by it all, lies guilt. Guilt that one girl survived, and one didn't. Guilt that one mother once hoped her daughter might die, to spare them all the pain of a long recovery. Guilt that one family's prayers seemed to be answered, and another's joy was cut short.

Guilt that one girl is not the other, could never be the other, and yet seems to be stepping into the life that girl left behind.

Jacquelyn Mitchard can write. She writes so well, in fact, that the reader is unable to step outside of the story of Maureen and Bridget once they've begun reading it. You can feel the pain, the happiness, the sorrow. You understand, and you grieve, and you rejoice, right along with the characters of ALL WE KNOW OF HEAVEN. This is a story you won't soon forget -- nor will you want to.

Couldn't Really Get Into It
By Christina Christina
I never could quite get over the fact that this was so obviously based on the real life story. There were just so many resemblances to the true story. I read the true story and I was very impressed with the way the two families displayed such amazing grace and compassion in the face of unimaginable loss. In this book, everyone seems to give in to their darker impulses and it makes for a bit of a melodramatic story. I understand that the mistaken identity scenario is a bit symbolic of the way the survivor is trying to carve out her own identity after a lifetime of being known as her best friend's look-alike friend. The thing is, she carves out this new identity for herself by sleeping with her dead friend's boyfriend. The sexuality in this book really bothered me. If the book had portrayed teen sexuality honestly, that would be one thing. But I was never given anything more than a superficial insight into why the characters would sleep around with each other and what it really meant for them. It all felt too rushed. I didn't really connect with any of the characters. I did like the sections that were from the girl's point of view as she was emerging from her coma. There were some genuinely touching moments. But overall, it left me feeling kinda hollow. There was the mistaken identity plotline which was way too reminiscent of the real story, and as a result, I wasn't able to suspend my disbelief. And then there was the love story that didn't feel like it was as developed as it should have been. Maybe because the characters all felt like shadowy people who were placed in this ready-made plotline with a little love story on the side.

The ending felt too neatly wrapped up. And yet the story's central dilemma doesn't feel like it's actually been resolved, mainly because I didn't know what, exactly, the characters wanted. At the end of the book, it seems that what the girl wants is the boy. You know---girl wants boy, girl gets boy, girl loses boy, etc., etc. But this doesn't feel connected to the mistaken identity plotline. So it feels like there's two plotlines in here. One involves the slow healing process and the other involves a weird love triangle gone wrong. Neither plotline reveals anything significant about the human condition, other than the fact that human beings can be sneaky and creepy to each other and, ultimately, human beings are survivors. But I expected more from this story than an acknowlegment of something I already know. And as for the girl finding her identity, I really don't think she did, except through her adolescent boyfriend.

So yeah, this book didn't offer me much. Maybe I didn't get it. But I hope what I've said makes some sense.

I also found the writing to be problematic in places. There were awkward point of view shifts and the occasional shift in time that felt too rushed. And there were all these characters coming and going. Occasionally, a character would show up in a scene out of nowhere and I would wonder who he was. That happened at least once.

This had a lot of potential but it didn't live up to the promise for me. I'll still go on to read other Mitchard books but I was disappointed in this one.

Burned-out private dick Michael McGill needs to jump-start his career. What he gets instead is a cattle prod to the crotch. The president's heroin-addicted chief of staff wants McGill to find the Constitution—the real one the Founding Fathers secretly devised for the time of gravest crisis. And with God, civility, and Mom's homemade apple pie already dead or dying, that time is now. But McGill has a talent for stumbling into every imaginable depravity—and this case is driving him even deeper into America's darkest, dankest underbelly, toward obscenities that boggle even his mind.

Amazon.com Review
Michael McGill is a burned-out private detective who suddenly becomes enlisted by an army of presidential goons to retrieve the Constitution of the United States, but not the one we all know about. This would be the real Constitution (the one with invisible amendments) created by some of the Founding Fathers as a fallback for their great experiment. Along the way, McGill gains a polyamorous sidekick named Trix, gets scared to death by what men do with warm salty water, and descends into a world where crime, sex, and madness all seem to be the same thing.

Full of mind-bending style and packed with a wild cast of characters, Crooked Little Vein infuses Robert B. Parker with Kurt Vonnegut and the madness of the graphic-novel world. A surprisingly surreal treat, it will appeal to hardcore comic fans, mystery aficionados, and all readers looking for a riotous summer reading adventure.

Sample Chapter One of Crooked Little Vein

"Chapter One. I opened my eyes to see the rat taking a piss in my coffee mug. It was a huge brown bastard; had a body like a turd with legs and beady black eyes full of secret rat knowledge."

Crooked Little Vein puts you right in the gutter from the first sentence and doesn't let up. Sample the goods with a look at the complete first chapter, and see if you don't get hooked.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of this dark, demented fiction debut from Ellis, the creator of DC Comics' Transmetropolitan and The Authority, the U.S. president's heroin-addicted chief of staff hires 25-year-old Lower East Side PI Mike McGill to find the other Constitution. This is a secret document privately authored by several of the Founders detailing the real intent of their design for American society, which a debauched vice-president Nixon lost in the '50s. With half a mill in black ops money, Mike hires cute tattooed Trix Holmes to be his guide to America's deviant underworld, whence the 50-year-old cold trail begins. In their search for the missing document, reputedly bound in the skin of the extraterrestrial entity that plagued Benjamin Franklin's ass over six nights in Paris, the pair make some wild pit stops in Columbus, Ohio; San Antonio, Tex.; Vegas; and, finally, L.A. The home of the free and the land of the brave has rarely looked so creepy in this snappily paced homage to William Burroughs's Naked Lunch. (Aug.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Warren Ellis is best known for his many comic books and graphic novels (among them, Transmetropolitan, The Authority, Fell, and Desolation Jones), as well as television and video game scripts. While some of the plots in his graphic novels can be unceasingly dark, Crooked Little Vein, Ellis's first prose novel, comes across as an absurdist catalog of fetish porn and depravity and a tongue-in-cheek examination of morality and hypocrisy in an Internet culture. Fans of Ellis's previous work will warm to the subject immediately, recognizing both the author's own peculiar genius and his debt to Raymond Chandler, Chuck Palahniuk, and William S. Burroughs. This book's not for everyone, though, and few readers will be ambivalent about it when they've finished.

Transmet's Little Brother
By geminigrey
I just finished reading Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis, the same guy who wrote the comic series Transmetropolitan among others. I had really really looked forward to this book, and I tore through it in the same of about 2 hours.

Which makes me all the more sad to say that I was disappointed in it. It felt like Transmet's little brother, who hadn't grown enough plot to stand on it's own two feet yet. The storyline is a parade of 'underground' fetishes, with a special float dedicated to the wonders of technology thrown in right after the marching band of bukkake fans. I kept wondering why the hell a private detective would have been put on the case, when the 'leads' were a straight line that a community college criminal justice major could have followed, much less the combined powers of the government spooks. And while the dialogue was entertaining, I didn't feel any kind of attachment to the two dimensional characters either.

I did find Ellis' writing style to be intriguing and the book certainly sucks you in, though I think that's more because I kept wanting to see what bizarreness is going to pop up next and hoping maybe it will start to have some meaning.

I'm sure that some with argue that there are plenty of themes and metaphors and deep universal truths to be found in the book, and maybe so, but it still feels watered down compared to what I was hoping for. That said, if you're not as jaded to the multitude of sexual deviances as I am, it's certainly worth a read for the amusing sideshow, if nothing else.

Dark, strange novel with some great writing...
By Thomas Duff
I figure that someone recommended this title to me, as it's not the type of book I would normally pick up on my own... Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis. I don't think I'd necessarily say it was the best novel I've ever read, and I'd be cautious to recommend it to someone due to its very raw nature. But in terms of creative and unique writing style, this ranks right up there.

The story involves Michael McGill, a struggling private investigator in New York, who is described as a "s..t magnet". Because of his unwanted ability to turn up in situations involving the seamy, ugly part of human activities, he's hired to track down a special book. The book is an alternative Constitution to be used if and when the original version stops influencing society. A whacked-out chief of staff to the President brings him up-to-date on what the government knows, and McGill has to pick up the cold thread from there. Half a million dollars for expenses and a tattooed girlfriend with unique views on sexuality, and he's off on a cross-country trip that exposes him to practices and kinks that he didn't know existed. Along the way, he has to confront his ideas as to what is right and wrong, what should and shouldn't be allowed in a free society.

The book isn't overly long (280 pages in a format about 2/3 the page size of a regular book), so the read is quick. The language would give it an R rating from page 1 if this were a movie. And the kinky practices... These are some things I've never heard of nor imagined. What's scary is that a search of the internet confirmed that these things are truly fetish practices, complete with pictures (e[...]) There's a deeper message that Ellis is trying to convey (I think), but it's definitely not a message or philosophy that would mesh with my own. For me, the best part of the book was the writing. It's reminiscent of a dark 50's PI novel, only with a bizarre cast of characters and plenty of cynicism. His prior work involved graphic novels, so it doesn't surprise me that he is able to paint a scene with few words but an abundance of detail. If you can pull off a chapter that has a single sentence and have it work, you know your stuff...

Not a book to read if you're easily offended or looking for some action-adventure mind candy. But if you're wanting something out of the mainstream with some great writing, check it out...

The emperor has no clothes... literally...
By Chris B
The more I think about the book, the less I like it. It was a quick read and I enjoyed reading it, to be sure, but as I think on it, there really isn't much going on there.

Take away the fetishes and you're left with an ostensible mystery in which the heroes are handed the exact clue they were looking for at the right time without any real pitfalls or dead ends. It's well written, but that's not enough to disguise a plot that is little more than very kinky ride at Disneyland: it may appear dangerous and edgy at first glance, but really you're on rails for a guided tour. "The Godzilla fetishists are chasing us! Whew! That was close, wasn't it?"

Not even close. Our Heroes move from plot point to plot point without any sense of tension or dread, just an ever diminishing sense of shock.

I'm glad I read it, I guess, but I wouldn't exactly want to recommend it to anyone else.

Bought on basis of previous reviews
By Gale
I purchased this book after reading reviews of it on amazon.com and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK. It is everything previously said and more. First, her dinnerware is beautiful - from the simple to the extravagant. All of her table arrangements are fresh and new ideas - not the same old stuff seen in other tabletop books I own. And, even though she may use expensive things (not all are), her ideas and design can easily be duplicated with what you may own. I am a dish fanatic not a cook. But, I was even interested in checking out the recipes and the beautifully displayed food. Then, near the end of the book, she has added beautiful and quaint drawings of the different types of dinnerware, explaining what each piece/shape is used for, e.g. cream soup cup and saucer...bouillon cup and saucer...luncheon plate...fruit saucer, etc. The next bonus is a section on artful flowers - again, designs that can easily be imitated/duplicated. Everything in the book has that "welcoming" feeling - even the formal table settings. If you are a dinnerware aficionado, you must have this book. I love it and know I will reference it frequently.

Gracious.....As Always!
By Debbie M.
Being very familiar with Southern Lady magazine, which Phyllis Hoffman publishes, I expected this book to be gorgeous & I wasn't disappointed. It is full of beautiful photos of all different kinds of table settings along with Ms. Hoffman's very tasteful commentary. If you love 'pretty things' & you appreciate gracious living, you'll love this book. There are a number of recipes also, and having used so many recipes from 'Southern Lady', I trust these are as delicious. If you're a lover of fine dinnerware, silver & glassware, you'll wish you had all the lovely patterns; I know I do! I've already enjoyed this book so very much, and with the timeless elegance & good taste of Ms. Hoffman's ideas, I know I'll continue to do so.

It Annoyed Me A Little
By Austen
The photos are gorgeous in this book and the ideas you can get from looking at them are abundant. I love beautiful china and have quite a bit. The missing stars in my rating are because, as I read this book, I found that because Phyllis Hoffman and her husband were born to privilege and have continued to live with it she hasn't a clue otherwise. She talks about, and shows pictures of, the very expensive china and silver passed down to her from her family members. She remembers "sitting down with Grandmother Hoffman . . . and sorting through her heirloom silverware collection." She suggests purchasing a special set of "youthful and fun" china reserved only for the breakfast counter - not table - counter. Her accompanying photo is of very expensive designer MacKenzie-Childs dishes. I know, in the resources it's listed as Victoria and Richard Emprise but, that's wrong. Emprise is the new designer line of Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs. The most ridiculous comment in the whole book was this: "Of course you'll want to offer your new neighbors a housewarming gift. A potted plant, a sterling silver picture frame, or a crystal bud vase are always lovely options. A casserole dish from the china pattern in which your entree is served [from when you have them over to dinner - which is a good idea that I agree with] is even more special . . ." Really? Sterling silver, crystal, a casserole from your own china pattern? For complete strangers that just happened to move onto your block? Yes, I was disappointed at how many recipes there were but there is nothing to compare to the disconnect with reality in the text.

My suggestion is to purchase this book if you love pictures of beautiful dishes and ideas for tablescapes - just don't read it. Use your own dishes, from wherever you purchase them and don't feel bad if your family members fail to have "heirloom silver to sort through" - this woman lives in a different world than most people.
