In this rich debut from New Zealander King, amateur naturalist Thomas Edgar leaves his young wife, Sophie, behind, and sets off from turn-of-the-20th-century England for the Brazilian Amazon. His quarry is an elusive butterfly that he hopes to be the first to find and name for his wife—the Papilio sophia. Thomas returns to England many months later physically weak, obviously disturbed and unable to speak. Frustrated and concerned, Sophie desperately seeks the cause of his turmoil. Her search reveals a world of corruption and violence, spearheaded by the rubber tycoon, Mr. Santos, who bankrolled Thomas and his fellows. King employs Apocalypse Now levels of depravity to get across the greedy, exploitative nature of the rubber trade at the beginning of the 20th century; it's enough to make the protagonist mute, and it may have a similar effect on the squeamish reader. But the violent twists are more shocks to the system than to the plot, which founders when furthest from Thomas and Sophie. There's plenty of life in their strained marriage, though, making this a noteworthy debut, and King a writer to watch. (Oct.)

An Incredible Debut

Wow! I just finished the last page, and that was the word that came out of my mouth. For a first novel, this author should be proud. This is an incredible story of one man's harrowing journey through the intense Amazon jungle to pursue his dream, collecting rare and unidentified butterflies. As you begin the story, you think this is going to be the main theme, a group of male naturalists battling the sweltering heat and bombardment of stinging and biting insects extraordinaire, enduring all hardships to capture their prized specimens. But oh how wrong that assumption is. This story starts slow, and rather meandering, increasingly getting eerier and eerier, the suspense building quietly and with a level of intensity that has the reader constantly on the edge. It soon becomes apparent that there is more than meets the eye out there for our hero Thomas, in a jungle ripe with not just the flora and fauna these men seek. We find much much more than colorful butterflies and howling monkeys. Oh yes,..mischief, mayhem, mysterious and monstrous acts unravel. I liked the back and forth strategy that the author puts in place by alternating what is happening both in Brazil for Thomas, and back in England with his lonely wife Sophia. It sets the pace to keep the suspense and allows both characters stories to become interesting. If you are tired of the same old plot lines and mundane novels that you pitch half way through, try this innovative and creative debut. You will not be disappointed. It's writing style finely crafted, and plot well rounded in story line and character depth. Bravo!

Rich, lush, sensuous and a cracking good read.

"The Sound of Butterflies" is a cracking good read, an incredible journey into the rich, sensuous heart of the Amazon. But more than that it is an important book, one that looks human nature in the face and doesn't flinch when things get a bit ugly.

In this book King has created characters who, despite their many flaws, are compellingly real and who somehow elicit our empathy. At the heart of "The Sound of Butterflies", is the terrifying choice to either speak the truth or remain silent. As a human rights lawyer I may have read my own story into Thomas's but I was struck by the accuracy with which King describes the paralyzing burden of knowing unbearably terrible things. This is one of the very few novels I have ever come across that explores this very struggle, and it should be recommended reading for the many stay-at-home partners of humanitarian workers and soldiers.

I'm not alone in my assessment of "The Sound of Butterflies", which recently won the NZSA Hubert Church Best First Book Award for Fiction. Here is what one of the experts from the judging panel had to say `Rachael King's strength is her rich, lush and sensuous prose; she has a forte for depicting characters we feel compelled to empathize with'.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Because really, what good would a novel set in the rich, lush and sensuous setting of the Amazon river at the turn of the 19th century be, if the author writing it couldn't rise to the occasion with prose that was rich, lush and sensuous enough to transport us all there. King can, and does.

As most of the other reviews already state, it is overall a wonderful book. The characters are interesting and the story moves forward making you want to know what comes next. The only critique I have is that I felt that towards the end it just all got a bit cluttered. It felt to me like the author was trying to resolve EVERYTHING in a few pages. To me the end was rushed. But I did overall enjoy reading it and would recommend it to others.

In Deborah Crombie's "Where Memories Lie," Superintendant Duncan Kincaid and Detective Inspector Gemma James have settled into domestic tranquility with their sons from former relationships, thirteen-year-old Kit and five-year-old Toby. Kincaid works in Scotland Yard and Gemma is stationed in Notting Hill. Although they are no longer professional partners, they still depend on one another for advice and support. Gemma's friend, Erika Rosenthal, is a retired academic who left Berlin with her husband, David, at the beginning of World War II. One evening, Erika asks Gemma to come over to discuss an important matter. It seems that an Art Deco brooch made of diamonds set in platinum has surfaced and is about to be auctioned off at a house called Harrowby's. Erika's late father, Jakob Goldshtein, was a master jewelry maker who created this exquisite item in 1938 and gave it to his daughter. It was stolen from her fifty years ago under tragic circumstances and she never expected to see it again. Erika asks Gemma to find out how a British auction house managed to acquire Jakob's masterpiece. Gemma agrees to make inquiries, not realizing that her visit to Harrowby's will set off alarms in the mind of a cold-blooded killer.

The author makes excellent use of flashbacks to 1952 London, in which an inspector named Gavin Hoxley investigates the murder of Erika Rosenthal's husband. Gemma studies Gavin's case notes, and as she learns more about Erika and David's lives, she begins to realize how the past and the present have converged, "as if time had rippled." Duncan and Gemma team up, pooling their resources to solve a series of brazen homicides. Meanwhile, Gemma has problems of a more personal nature. Her dad, Ern Walters, who always treats her with a touch of disdain, shows up at her home one evening while she is out. He tells Duncan that Gemma's mum, Vi, has collapsed and is in the hospital. Since Vi has always been lively, independent, and energetic, Gemma is dismayed to learn that her mother has a serious illness with an uncertain prognosis. Gemma is also guilt-ridden because her busy schedule has kept her from looking in on her parents more often. She struggles to come to terms with her mother's illness, her father's resentment, and her fear of accepting Duncan's marriage proposal.

Crombie has assembled a varied and colorful cast. Gemma and Duncan are soul mates who are enjoying their well-earned contentment after years filled with misfortune and heartbreak. Erika Rosenthal is a dignified and self-sufficient woman who keeps her own counsel until she is ready to tell her horrifying tale. Kristin Cahill is an ambitious and attractive girl with an art history degree who is employed at Harrowby's. She is in love with Dominic Scott, a "pretty boy" with bad habits and unsavory associates. Dom's mother, Ellen Miller-Scott is a beautiful, haughty, and wealthy woman who disapproves of her son's irresponsible behavior. Harry Pevensey is a pretentious actor in decline. In spite of his shrinking bank account, he still has a taste for the finer things in life and is hoping for a substantial "payoff from the recent little financial gamble he had let himself be talked into, against his better judgment." Doug Cullen, Kincaid's sergeant, is unlucky in love and is uneasy when Gemma tries to match him up with one of her colleagues, DC Melody Talbot.

Her effortless writing style, smooth dialogue, and strong characterizations make this one of Crombie's most satisfying works. She skillfully demonstrates how events that date back half a century have a way of reaching out and influencing the present. In addition, Crombie shows the disastrous consequences of prejudice, greed, ambition, and pride. "Where Memories Lie" works on many levels--as an intriguing murder mystery, an exploration of an appalling chapter in European history, and a deeply affecting tale of complex personal relationships. This is a poignant and engrossing installment in a deservedly long-running and popular series.

12th in a series and one of the best...even, perhaps, THE best

Deborah Crombie is a Texan who writes a fabulous British mystery series. Now in its 12th installment, her Duncan Kincaid-Gemma James mysteries are complex, involving and cleverly crafted; the progression of the love story between the two cops and their interactions with friends and family is compelling; the secondary characters, good and bad, are always exceptionally well drawn. But this one, which focuses on Gemma's old friend Erika Rosenthal and what happens when a long missing and valuable old diamond brooch of hers turns up at a London auction house, is just superb and gets my vote as Crombie's best yet. If you're already a fan of the series you'll remember Erika from earlier appearances in the series and will have doubtless come to like her as much as Gemma does. Now it would appear that several seemingly unconnected murders, both past and present, can only be solved by digging all the way back to Nazi Germany and Erika's sad and, till now, closely guarded history.

If once you've finished this gem, you find you'd like to go back and follow the Duncan & Gemma story from the beginning (highly recommended as you're sure to gain a richer appreciation for Crombie's work and her characters), here's the list, updated in January 2015: 1. Great but Not Worth the Higher Price

THE REAGAN DIARIES: UNABRIDGED offer an incredibly insightful and illuminating portrait of the 40th president. Reading these entries allows you a window into Reagan's heart and mind, and what you discover is an incredibly engaged, intelligent, witty, and charming man who was motivated by his boundless love of wife and country. This should come as little surprise to Reagan's admirers but will confound his critics, obliterating the left-wing myth that he was a shallow figurehead of a president. What's more, the unabridged version of the diaries includes roughly twice the material of the abridged version, providing the fullest picture possible of Reagan's day-to-day life in the White House, and Reagan writes with a simple elegance that makes reading the almost 1200 pages always enjoyable and never a chore.

Based on substance alone, I would give this two-volume set 5 stars without reservation. A comprehensive review, however, must also consider factors such as cost. On that account, the unabridged version fares badly. It sells here on Amazon for roughly $75 more than the abridged hardcover version (the difference between their list prices is actually $115), but offers nothing to justify that huge markup. For that kind of money, one would expect significant enhancements, such as leather-binding, gold-leafed pages, a ribboned bookmark, and/or a fancy slipcase. Instead, the books themselves are ordinary dustjacketed cardboard hardcovers, printed on plain paper, and with a simple blue cardboard slipcase. Really, the price should be in the $60-70 range (what one would expect to pay for two hardcover books) and not much more, but instead the list price has been marked up to over twice that. While the unabridged content undoubtably adds to the book, it doesn't add near enough to make it a wise buy for the average reader.

Unless you're a scholar or a Reagan enthusiast, stick with the abridged version--you'll get the essentials at about a quarter of the price.

Wonderful reading.

For all those critics that claim Ronald Reagan was (let's see, if I can remember all the bashing comments...) unengaged, out of his mind, asleep on the job, mentally incompetent, brain already racked with Alzheimer's, well, you get the picture, these diaries will prove quite the opposite. He had a vision when he came into office and started from day one to get this country back on the right track economically and defensively. Boy, we could sure use him now! Miss you, President Reagan (RIP)!

I could hear the President talking

A must read and have for anyone wanting to know President Reagan and understand why he was great. Better than all the biographies written about him. Puts to rest the falsehoods about him and allows you to see his greatness, the intelligence behind it, the great depth of his character and commitment to the job he took on. If you loved President Reagan you will love his diary and if you didn't it may change your mind to new found respect. The abridged version is a must as a minimum.

Hilarious

This book arrived in the same Amazon shipment as "Bertha Venation", a book devoted to funny names of people. While "Bertha Venation" managed to be singularly unfunny, "Bizarre Books" had a pretty high hilarity quotient. Almost every page had at least a couple of titles which made me giggle.

Conveniently grouped into chapters such as Double Entendres, Science & Scientific Theories, health & Medicine, Sex & Marriage, Sport, Leisure, Clothes & Fashion, Food & Drink, The Workplace, Crime & the Law, Religion & Beliefs, and Death , most of the titles included in this book are genuinely funny. For some of the more baffling titles, the authors include a representative short excerpt, a welcome feature.

This book is not for everyone. But if you have a penchant for the offbeat, the quirky, and obscure weirdness, it's good for more than a few belly-laughs.

It would be remiss of me not to include a few of my favorite entries:

* The Art of Faking Exhibition Poultry (1934), by George Ryley Scott.
The author treads an indistinct line between condemning this widespread and despicable practice, and telling the reader exactly how to do it.

* Correctly English in 100 Days(Shanghai Correctly English Society, 1934)
This book is prepared for the Chinese young man who wishes to served for the foreign firms. It divided nealy hundred and ninety pages. It contains full of ordinary speak and write language.....

* Was Oderic of Pordenone Ever in Tibet?, by Berthold Laufer (1914)

* The Love Sonnets of a Hoodlum, by Wallace Irwin (1901)
'Am I a turnip? On the strict Q.T.,
When do my Trilbys get so ossified?

* Truncheons: Their Romance and Reality, by Erland Fenn Clark (1935),
with over 100 plates illustrating more than 500 truncheons.

Admit it, aren't you just a little bit curious to learn more about those 500 truncheons? To know more about the mysterious, mythic Oderic of Pordenone? To sample more of that literary hoodlum's oeuvre?

Perhaps what I enjoy most about this book is the glimpses it provides of the infinite inventiveness, and never-ending quirkiness, of the human mind.

I really like this meta book - I just wish there were more excerpts from the featured books. After a while, reading the massive lists of book titles was like going to a restaurant and only reading the menu - eventually, you want something to eat!

A very funny "dip-into" book

I bought this book because of its cover which featured a lady who appeared to be from the fifties holding two toads, upside down, one in each hand. It was apparently the front cover for a book about making profits from raising frogs. The rest of the book is simply about weird and wonderful books. Whether they have unintentionally amusing titles, such as "Penetrating Wagner's Ring", unbelievable prosaic titles such as "A study of Liverpudlian water cocks, 1932-1955" or ridiculous authors' names, one of which included something like "D'Bang-D'Crashes" (I'm using my memory here so these may not be exactly correct) it is a very funny book. I work in London, and the London Underground is a very staid place. But I read it while I was commuting and could not help laughing out loud at some of the entries. I got some very strange looks from fellow commuters until I passed the book to one of them. Then they started laughing out loud too. Even if you can't get a copy for me, could you hunt down who ever I loaned it to and force them to return it to me?

Zora Neale Hurston, the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, was deemed "one of the greatest writers of our time" by Toni Morrison. She was born in Notasulga, Alabama, in 1891, and died in 1960.

The Best Audio Tape Ever!

This audio tape recorded by Ruby Dee of Zora Neale Hurston's Mules and Men absolutely makes the case for audio-books because of Dee's extraordinary performance. I seriously doubt that Hurston could do better herself. It is so great that this is the third time I am buying it. The first two copies are owned by my Mom (artist Faith Ringgold) who is bi-coastal and keeps a copy loaded in the tape player ready to play, day or night, on each coast, and the third is for me because now from listening to my Mom's tapes I am as addicted to it as she is. This is becoming true of a lot of her friends. Whether you are doing something else or just listening, it fits in perfectly, and it is full of wisdom and laughs. It is absolutely the best, and I would buy anything else that Ruby Dee ever had anything to do with because she is the glue that makes it work.

This year there are 20 articles from 11 different publications. It is heavy on medical science (8-9 essays) and human interest science rather than hard science - an advantage or disadvantage depending on how you look at it, but makes for easy reading.

My favorite article, by Jonathan Keats - John Koza has built an invention machine - Artificial Intelligence that solves complex engineering problems with minimal to no human guidance. The machine's method? - Darwinian evolution by natural selection: survival of the fittest computer code.

Tyler Cabot - Why the "theory of everything," that will unite quantum physic with Einstein's theories of relativity is a fool's errand.

Sylvia Nasar and David Gruber - Mathematician Gregory Perelman refused the honors and financial awards for solving the Poincare conjecture. A scramble ensued among others who wished to gain undue credit for that vacant seat of honor.

Robin Henig - A foolproof lie detector might be bad for human society. "After all, the skills of lying are the same skills involved in the best human social interactions."

Joshua Davis - The brain's system for recognizing faces is separate from its system for discerning other objects. Says one patient with a deficient facial recognition module, "Everyone looks the same so it's hard to commit emotionally with anyone."

Oliver Sacks - The only way to perceive depth rather than judge it is with binocular vision. Stereo Sue's newfound visual abilities were "absolutely delightful...ordinary things looked extraordinary."

Stacey Burling - Alzheimer's disease steadily robs you of your humanity...first your memory, then your dignity, then your life. "When I start blithering, I want you to shoot me," Bob told his wife.

Jennifer Couzin - Whistle blowers in cases of misconduct involving basic science research often suffer a loss of time, prestige, and credibility - then frequently change careers.

Lawrence Altman - Ninety-eight year old Michael DeBakey is the oldest survivor of an operation he himself devised. Was this VIP medical care ethical?

Elizabeth Kolbert - How climate change is causing the forced migration of various species.

William Broad - New evidence adds to the complexity of the issue of climate change - a clear victory for mainstream scientific opinion, but not a slam dunk.

John Cassidy - With fMRI (brain imaging), neuroeconomists test whether people really make rational choices in financial decisions.

Barry Yeoman - Mary Schweitzer is a paleontologist, a molecular biologist, and an evangelical Christian (a one-of-a-kind combo). She also found soft tissue in Tyrannosaurus Rex bones. Creationists know how to interpret this - God created earth less than 10,000 years ago. Schweitzer doesn't agree.

Patricia Gadsby - You can improve on the 10-minute egg if you learn a little egg chemistry. "Cooking eggs is really a question of temperature, not time."

Gregory Mone - How MIT professor John Underkoffer tries to make the depiction of movie scientists as real as the science.

As I expected, this yearly compilation is a pleasure to read.

One tremendous essay and many competent ones

In her informative introduction to this work Gina Kolata explains her criteria for the selections she made. She believes that scientific journalism is the most exciting form of journalism now being done, as it gives us insight into the revolutionary transformations being made in our understanding of ourselves and our world. When she searched for articles for the anthology she searched for those which would pleasant to read, and which would provide insight into an important scientific development. She tells the story of the article of her own she most treasures that on Andrew Wiles ten- year successful effort to prove 'Fermat's Theorem'.
I am not sure that all of the articles meet her criterion of providing insight into important discoveries. I for instance found David Dobbs article on ' A Depression Switch' one which discusses a new surgical technique for treating depression which focuses on brain circuitry to be 'thin' in providing only one case- history in which the procedure was tried and seemed to work.
Tyler Cabot's piece on 'The Theory of Everything' provides a good survey of the work being done now on the realization of Einstein's great dream. String theory, M theory , Loop quantum gravity, the holographic universe- which will provide the theory which will unify all the forces of nature? He shows why there is so much anticipation of the experimental results which will be given by the C.E.R.N. Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland which is scheduled to go operational later this year.
The most powerful, dramatic, interesting, enjoyable piece in this collection I found to be Sylvia Nasr, and David Gruber's 'Manifold Destiny'. They describe the story of the solving of the 'Poincare Conjecture' in the Third Dimension. The story is both of a scientific- mathematical process one and a moral and human competition and struggle. The hero of the story is Grigory Pereleman whose solution to the problem published in three stages on the 'Internet' has been generally accepted by the major mathematical teams that examined it as the correct solution. However as Nasr and Gruber make clear the solution was an effort of many years involving the work of a number of mathematicians, among them Willam Thurston, and Richard Hamilton. The human drama involved a Chinese team of mathematicians including the only Chinese winner of mathematics, most important prize the Fields Medal Shing- Tung Yau. . Considered one of the finest living mathematicians he makes a power play, what the authors clearly see as an illegitimate effort, to steal the honors from Perelman. He does this by having his team provide a much fuller proof than the one Pearlman had provided. Perlman himself refuses the Field award retires from mathematics , and seems to present himself as that kind of pure figure who lives only for the doing of mathematics, and the advancing of human understanding and knowledge.
There are a number of other articles in which the 'human interest' element is at least as important as the scientific. One by Lawrence K.Altman described a heart- procedure done to save the life of Michael DeBakey then ninety- seven. The procedure is one which DeBakey himself devised. In another Robin Marantz Henig examines society's effort to find a reliable way of knowing when someone is lying- a process which has questionable political and moral implications. Another human interest article by Stacy Burling focuses on the story of an Alzheimer's patient and the effort to probe his mind for a cure. The always interesting Oliver Sacks has a piece called 'Stereo Sue' on a woman who for years has no stereoscopic vision only to through the help of a team Sacks is a part of attain this quality. Her words when this happen are perhaps the most inspiring in the volume.
She tells about a moment of perception which she has three years after acquiring the capacity to see in depth .
"In the past ,the snow would have appeared to fall in a flat sheet in one plane slightly in front of me. I would have felt like I was looking in on the snowfall. But now, I felt myself within the snowfall among the snowflakes. Lunch forgotten, I watched the snow fall for several minutes, and , as I watched I was overcome with a deep sense of joy. A snowfall can be quite beautiful- especially when you see it for the first time'.
I have mentioned less than half of the pieces in this most outstanding and enjoyable collection.

If you're interested in . . .

. . . advances in medical knowledge and therapies, then this is the book for you. Not surprisingly, the Internet is increasing knowledge of the conditions that beset us. One of these, once thought to be only another unfortunate result of strokes, is now known to be more widespread. Joshua David's article on prosopagnosia - "face blindness" - reveals how people who cannot recognise faces, any faces, need not be victims of strokes. Face blindness can be congenital, and one estimate puts its prevalence up to six million people in the US alone. Another condition, Alzheimer's, is also undergoing expanded study, as Stacey Burling's essay follows. Post-mortem brain examination has been the only way to develop diagnostic tools. Recent work is providing new ways of learning if the disease has become established, allowing earlier treatment. Depression victims are also being relieved of symptoms through a method related to heart pacemakers as described by David Dobbs in "Depression Switch".

. . . progress in basic physics or mathematics, there are articles on the latest thinking and experiments. Tyler Cabot's "Theory of Everything" relates the "fool's errand" by those on that seemingly hopeless quest. Another apparently fruitless task was the solution of the famous Poncaire's conjecture - a century-old proposition with implications for both mathematics and cosmology. In an article about a bizarre mathematician, David Gruber and Sylvia Nasar relate the story of Field Medal [mathematics' Nobel Prize] winner Grigory Perelman. Jonathon Keats finds another application for numeric calculations in his essay on a computer-based "invention machine". Yet another article on numbers, more practical and, to some, useful is presented by Patricia Gadsby in "Cooking for Eggheads".

. . . the latest discoveries on prehistoric life, then Barry Yeoman's article, "Schweitzer's Dangerous Discovery" will capture your attention. In the fossil bones of a long extinct Tyrannosaurus rex, Mary Schweitzer teased out remnants of soft tissue. The discovery raised questions about a real-life "Jurassic Park", but it also stirred the "Christian Creationist" community to declare the fossils weren't as ancient as palaeontologists had long declared. Attempts to discredit the "dangerous idea of" Charles Darwin are endemic in the US and in Dover, Pennsylvania those efforts came to a new head. In "God of Gorilla", Matthew Chapman relates the events surrounding an attempt to inject "creationism" into a local school system.

. . . just what science is all about, then Oliver Sacks, always a compelling read, explains some interesting studies on vision in "Stereo Sue". An unexpected relationship between economics and how we make decisions is explored in "Mind Games" by John Cassidy. An attention-grabbing mix of cognitive science and values, the article is worth anybody's review. A topic of increasing interest, climate change, is dealt with in two captivating articles. "Butterfly Lessons" relates how various forms of life are appearing in unexpected places due to warming trends. Yet, some of the research on climate change is being challenged as William J. Broad explains.

The "Best American Science Writing" series is always a fruitful addition to any library shelf. This volume is no exception. Gina Kolata is to be congratulated on her selection, as are each of the writers represented here. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
