Amazon.com Review
Equal parts droll and gorgeous nostalgia book and heartfelt plea for a renewed sense of adventure in the lives of boys and men, Conn and Hal Iggulden's The Dangerous Book for Boys became a mammoth bestseller in the United Kingdom in 2006. Adapted, in moderation, for American customs in this edition (cricket is gone, rugby remains; conkers are out, Navajo Code Talkers in), The Dangerous Book is a guide book for dads as well as their sons, as a reminder of lore and technique that have not yet been completely lost to the digital age. Recall the adventures of Scott of the Antarctic and the Battle of the Somme, relearn how to palm a coin, tan a skin, and, most charmingly, wrap a package in brown paper and string. The book's ambitions are both modest and winningly optimistic: you get the sense that by learning how to place a splint or write in invisible ink, a boy might be prepared for anything, even girls (which warrant a small but wise chapter of their own).

Questions for Conn Iggulden

Conn and Hal Iggulden are two brothers who have not forgotten what it was like to be boys. Conn taught for many years before becoming one of the most admired and popular young historical novelists with his Emperor series, based on the life of Julius Caesar, and his newly embarked series on Genghis Khan, while Hal is a theater director. We asked Conn about their collaboration.

Amazon.com: It's difficult to describe what a phenomenon The Dangerous Book for Boys was in the UK last year. When I would check the bestseller list on our sister site, Amazon.co.uk, there would be, along with your book, which spent much of the year at the top of the list, a half-dozen apparent knockoff books of similar boy knowledge. Clearly, you tapped into something big. What do you think it was?

Iggulden: In a word, fathers. I am one myself and I think we've become aware that the whole "health and safety" overprotective culture isn't doing our sons any favors. Boys need to learn about risk. They need to fall off things occasionally, or--and this is the important bit--they'll take worse risks on their own. If we do away with challenging playgrounds and cancel school trips for fear of being sued, we don't end up with safer boys--we end up with them walking on train tracks. In the long run, it's not safe at all to keep our boys in the house with a Playstation. It's not good for their health or their safety.

You only have to push a boy on a swing to see how much enjoys the thrill of danger. It's hard-wired. Remove any opportunity to test his courage and they'll find ways to test themselves that will be seriously dangerous for everyone around them. I think of it like playing the lottery--someone has to say "Look, you won't win--and your children won't be hurt. Relax. It won't be you."

I think that's the core of the book's success. It isn't just a collection of things to do. The heroic stories alone are something we haven't had for too long. It isn't about climbing Everest, but it is an attitude, a philosophy for fathers and sons. Our institutions are too wrapped up in terror over being sued--so we have to do things with them ourselves. This book isn't a bad place to start.

As for knockoff books--great. They'll give my son something to read that doesn't involve him learning a dull moral lesson of some kind--just enjoying an adventure or learning skills and crafts so that he has a feeling of competence and confidence--just as we have.

Amazon.com: You made some changes for the U.S. edition, and I for one am sorry that you have removed the section on conkers, if only because it's such a lovely and mysterious word. What are (or what is) conkers?

Iggulden: Horse chestnuts strung on a shoelace and knocked against one another until they shatter. In the entire history of the world, no one has ever been hurt by a conker, but it's still been banned by some British schools, just in case. Another school banned paper airplanes. Honestly, it's enough to make you weep, if I did that sort of thing, which I try not to. Reading Jane Austen is still allowed, however.

Amazon.com: What knowledge did you decide was important to add for American boys? I notice in both editions you have an excellent and useful section on table football, as played with coins. Is paper football strictly an American pastime? I'm not sure I could have gotten through the fourth grade without it.

Iggulden: I like knowing the details of battles, so Gettysburg and the Alamo had to go in, along with the Gettysburg address, stickball, state capitals, U.S. mountains, American trees, insects, U.S. historical timelines, and a lot of others. Navajo code talkers of WWII is a great chapter. It probably helps that I am a huge fan of America. It was only while rewriting for the U.S. that I realized how many positive references there already are. You have NASA and NASA trumps almost anything.

As for paper football, ever since I thought of putting the book together, people keep saying things like "You have rockets in there, yes? Everyone loves rockets!" Paper football is the first American one, but there will be many others. No book in the world is long enough to put them all in--unless we do a sequel, of course.

Amazon.com: Do you think The Dangerous Book for Boys is being read by actual boys, or only by nostalgic adults? Have you seen boys getting up from their Xboxes to go outside and perform first aid or tan animal skins or build go-carts?

Iggulden: I've had a lot of emails and letters from boys who loved the book--as well as fathers. I've had responses from kids as young as ten and an old man of 87, who pointed out a problem with the shadow stick that we've since changed. The thing to remember is that we may be older and more cynical every year, but boys simply aren't. If they are given the chance to make a go-cart with their dad, they jump at it. Mine did. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to know the book is being used with fathers and sons together, trying things out. Nothing is more valuable to a boy than time with his dad, learning something fun--or something difficult. That's part of the attitude too. If it's hard, you don't make it easy, you grab it by the throat and hang on for as long as it takes.

The book is often bought by fathers, of course. Their sons don't know Scott of the Antarctic is a great adventure story. How could they if it isn't taught any more? Good, heroic stories don't appear much in modern school curriculums--and then we wonder why boys don't seem interested.

Amazon.com: And finally, on to the important questions: Should Pluto still be a planet? And what was the best dinosaur?

Iggulden: Pluto is a planet. I know there are scientists who say it isn't, but it's big enough to be round and it has a moon, for crying out loud. Of course it's a planet. Give it ten years and they'll be agreeing with me again.

As for the best dinosaur, it depends what you mean by best. For sheer perfection, it probably has to be the shark and the crocodile. Modern ones are smaller but their record for sheer survival is pretty impressive. I only hope humanity can do as well. The only thing that will stop us is worrying too much.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8–Intentionally old-fashioned and politically incorrect, this eclectic collection addresses the undeniable boy-appeal of certain facts and activities. Dozens of short chapters, in fairly random order, cover a wide range of topics in conversational prose. Simple instructions for coin tricks and paper airplanes alternate with excerpts from history such as Famous Battles and facts about ancient wonders of the world and astronomy. The dangerous aspect is more apparent in such chapters as Making Cloth Fireproof, and Hunting and Cooking a Rabbit, but also applies to the overall premise that action is fun and can be worth the risks. A section on stickball, for instance, includes advice to possibly flee the vicinity in the event of a broken window. The information is appropriately concise. The knot-tying section, for example, sticks to five basic varieties with clear instructions and useful diagrams. Occasional topics such as Marbling Paper and Latin Phrases Every Boy Should Know may not fit the stereotypical interests of young males, but support the general theme of cultivating curiosity. The authors refer to their own experiences as they tested the activities, lending an appealing personal tone. Tongue-in-cheek humor emerges throughout, notably in eight bits of advice offered in the chapter called Girls. Already a best seller in England, this American edition features several adjustments, such as substituting The Declaration of Independence for Patron Saints of Britain. Both premise and content should appeal to many boys, and might be even more successful when nostalgic dads join in.–Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR

My 6 year old went nuts for it.
By Keith Rule
I bought this book after seeing the author on the Colbert show (or was it the Daily Show?). I loved the idea of the book and ordered it from Amazon immediately.

On arrival if found it exceeds my expectation. It reminds me a lot of the Popular Mechanics books from the 30's & 40's that I found in my grandmothers attic when I was a kid.

The style is archaic, which is part of the charm. My 6 year old son, who really isn't into "chapter books", went nuts for this book. I think this mostly had to do with the title, but as we scanned each chapter together he seemed to get more and more excited.

Before his bed time we read "coin tricks", "Girls" and he started planning how to get the badges found in the back of the book. He managed to learn the "French Drop" and proceeded to show everyone his new trick. Tomorrow he wants to hear about hunting and cooking rabbits.

My wife was a bit nervous about the book, especially after seeing the section on hunting and cooking a rabbit. But I think she liked the section on "Girls" and she realizes that this book is targeted to boys, not Moms.

It's definitely a hit. I will be reading chapters out of it to my son for some time to come. But I don't mind and will probably learn a thing or two myself.

Update:

It's more than a year later. The book is dog-eared, dirty and worn but my (now) 7 year old still reads and loves this book. I doubt there is a better review you can get from a 7 year old.

A Breath of Fresh Air
By D. McHone
I have been thoroughly enjoying the book, as has my son and thousands of boys (and dads!) in Great Britain and the US. What is it about this book that brings such excitement to so many?

If I had to offer my opinion, I would say that the appeal of this book is that it does not ask any boy to apologize for being a boy. Our culture is infested with the demand that boys forgo their God given call to grow up to be men, largely because we have adopted an unhealthy view of just what a man is. Whether our example be found in Homer Simpson, Ray Romano or the dad on Family Guy, men are portrayed as selfish imbeciles in a large portion of the media. Women are shown to be compassionate and intelligent, and they are usually given the role of the one who fixes the problems created by men. I have no doubt that most women are compassionate and intelligent, but the common negative portrayal of men is presented far too often, and frankly I'm tired of it.

This book has a different take on what it means to be a boy, which is important because boys grow up to be men. From a biblical standpoint, men are meant to lead their families and churches by serving them. Where can you find such a concept on the television? You can't. This is yet another reason to get this book in the hands of a boy and his dad and get them outside to explore the world, whether that be an excursion in the woods or even just in the back yard. But how does this book portray a boy? What ideals are encouraged?

I'm glad you asked.

I simply cannot take this book section by section. There are instructions meant to get a boy started in tying knots, making a bow and arrow, fishing and many other activities. These are expected out of a book about being a boy. But included with such topics are other mini-chapters about the wonders of the world, grammar, historical battles, understanding latitude and longitude (something I never grasped in a classroom), the Declaration of Independence, poetry, Latin phrases, literature the Ten Commandments and also how to talk to girls.

I mention talking to girls last, not because it is the last topic, but because I would like to highlight it for a moment. The first piece of advice about girls is to listen to them. The second is to avoid a long string of nervous jokes by listening to them. I'm sure that my wife wishes I had this book as a child! After this, romance is mentioned. Buying flowers is often not a good idea if you are young, because the girl will know your parents purchased them. I wouldn't have thought of that. Anonymous valentines are a good idea, due to the suspense the girl will have trying to figure out who's eye she has caught. Vulgarity of all forms is to be avoided at all costs. Respect for girls is given the utmost priority.

Is this what is so dangerous about this book? Is it the high value the authors place upon girls or is it the very fact that they say that girls and boys are not identical? Is it the suggestion that every boy should have band-aids available for the inevitable mishap, because our bodies do heal? Or is it the way this book portrays a healthy boy in a way that expresses both a boy's natural desire for adventure and the ideal of respectfulness for others? I really can't say for sure.

If I had to pick one way that this book is considered dangerous and why it has met some opposition, I would say that it is because The Dangerous Book for Boys resonates so well with dads who can only wish such a book was available to them when they were growing up, and because their sons by and large are reveling in the contemplation of spending Sunday afternoons and long summer days with their dads, rediscovering what it means to be a boy with their father acting as the primary instructor.

I give this book my highest praise and encourage every dad to buy it for their sons. If you have a boy, you really need to get this book. If you don't have any boys, I'm sure you know somebody who does.

It's too dangerous!
By E. M. Van Court
And great for it!

It's dangerous because it brings back values from a time when personal responsibility was assumed, not assumed to be absent. Hunting with airguns is dangerous, but teaches that meat doesn't arrive on Earth wrapped in clear plastic. Anything to do with spies is dangerous, but codes and invisible inks are fun, can be used responsibly, and are an important part of history (n.b. the role of espionage in the American Revolution). Doing things with electricity like making batteries, electromagnets, and pocket lights is dangerous, but teaches some of fundements of the technologies that drive the modern world. Soccer is dangerous, I've seen kids break bones playing it, but it is good healthy fun, and the kids who broke bones openly and loudly resented having to sit out games while they recovered. Girls are dangerous in so many ways, but when treated with respect can make life better. Grammar is dangerous, especially in the hands of an attorney, but creates quite an advantage for those who master it.

All these things and more are discussed, and alternatives to XBox, Gameboy, PlayStation, etc are offered. This book is incredibly dangerous to proponents of a 'managed society' where everyone is protected from everything, and everyone is free and happy in exactly the proscribed fashion. And I'm OK with this. Because "the Dangerous Book for Boys" also encourages responsibility, manners, education, self-reliance, creativity, and a host of other values that receive lip-service but little actual support in mainstream America.

Several reviewers have expressed their displeasure with the phrase "for Boys". Get over it. Get some perspective; if this is the most important thing you can take a stand about, go visit a third world country and watch children walk half a mile for water every day. Who cares what it says on the cover? I bought it with a blond, blue-eyed, [...] girl in mind, and she loves it. If it is such a heartache to you, quit whining and write "The Dangerous Book for Girls" while my daughter reads this one.

For the rest of y'all, get this for any boy or girl of any age. This book is excellent and an investment in the future.

Fabulous series
By debbims
I teach 2nd grade and have met Dan Gutman. I have read most of his books and loved them. The Weird School series has been a hit with my class this year. I have read each one orally to them and they beg for more. I pause at certain places in the stories because they know what lines come next. I'm going to begin the Weird School Daze next.

My Weird School ROCKS!
By Gillespie
My son, age 8, has fallen in love with the My Weird School, My Weird School Daze, and My Weirder School series of books. In fact, he spent so much time reading them this summer that he's completed the entire series, and is eagerly awaiting the next installment. The books are very funny. I've read quite a few with my kids. And I enjoy hearing excerpts from all the funny bits when my son reads them to us. My daughter, age 5, has also fallen in love with Arlo, Andrea and the other students of Ella Mentary School. Though she can't yet read, she enjoys it when myself or my son read to her. The audio books -- available from Audible.com -- are excellent as well. (Only wish there were more in this format.) My son has read some of the books in paperback format, and others on my husband's Kindle. Both formats work well for him. I HIGHLY recommend this series. (You will want to talk about Arlo's sense of humor... and lack of insight... and how it might not be a good idea to repeat some of the things he says... To me it's been a great conversation starter about how to behave in social situations, etc.

An unrecognized classic.
By James Bradley
This book is not to be missed, memorable like few other things I have read. Wheelis is exceptional in crafting precise language. The main story opens, "Once upon a time there was a main who had no illusions about anything." It is a picture of bubbly aspiration and delight against a background of cold realism, but the denial has cracks and humanity seeps through and grows like weeds on a cliff face. The other pieces, all short, are also lovely, thoughtful.

Teriffic resource!
By Dr. B
King and Mackey have done something quite near and dear to my heart, which is to make sound research findings available to parents and teachers and anyone who is interested. Additionally, its a fun read with humor and personal anecdotes from real parents. This book is fairly unique such that it was written by two women who are both professors and mothers. Not only do they do a great job of synthesizing cutting edge research on cognitive development, they write as experienced moms who know ropes of parenting as well. They take research data about how children learn second or third languages and turn them into concrete ideas that you can put into practice in the grocery store or at dinner. I also LOVE the fact that they take on the many myths around second language learning. There are so many 'truths' about bilingual children that are propagated but are just not accurate or have been disproven. And as a person who never misses the opportunity to debunk the myth that Baby Einstein is educational, I really like to hear people talking science instead of just what will sell. I think this book is a great tool for people in quite a few situations, from those who have second language they wish to teach their child, to those who only speak English but who are really interested in all the benefits there are to being bilingual. This is definitely a great choice for parenting book clubs or as a gift for a friend.

Not much advice for bilingual parents
By Jane
My husband is French speaking, and I am English speaking. I was looking for a book with advice on how to best teach both languages to our children. Most of the book is about why bilingualism is good, and how to encourage it if the parents are not bilingual. This book sorely lacks practical advice for parents in bilingual families. I have now bought Language Strategies for Bilingual Families by Suzanne Barron-Hauwaert, which I am hoping will be better.

It's not too late!
By Islas Virgenes
I always knew I wanted my son to speak a second language, but was torn between two myths. The first myth I believed was that in order to be bilingual you'd have to start at an early age or learning would be much more difficult. But the other myth I believed stated if you introduced a second language while a toddler is just aquiring his first language, the child would get confused and speech would be delayed. Hopelessly confused and not sure how or when to introduce Spanish to my 2 year old son, I purchased this book after reading the reviews in an attempt to get some tips on raising my son bilingual. This book is truly an inspiration and it immediately motivated me to get started. It clearly states that my beliefs were pure myths; the time to introduce a second language to your child is now! It is never too late. This book has motivated me a great deal and it is amazing how quickly my son has begun to pick up Spanish words and phrases simply by a little exposure to the language. I was so inspired by this book that I purchased one for my Spanish friend who has both a 9 year old and 5 year old who only speak English. I handed the book to her and yelled, "It's not too late!"

Judas: The Definitive Collection of Gospels and Legends About the Infamous Apostle of Jesus, by Marvin W. Meyer

Judas Iscariot has been demonized as the quintessential traitor, the disciple who betrayed his master for the infamous thirty pieces of silver. But the recent sensational discovery and publication of the long lost Gospel of Judas, with its remarkable portrayal of Judas Iscariot as the disciple closest to Jesus, raises serious new questions. Was Judas the only member of the Twelve who truly understood Jesus? Did Jesus secretly collaborate with Judas to set in motion the series of events that would redeem all of humankind? In search of answers, Marvin Meyer, one of the world's leading experts on the Gospel of Judas presents a collection of the earliest accounts of Judas, which together paint a fuller portrait of this most enigmatic disciple.

This book presents the essential texts that deal with the figure of Judas, including New Testament writings, Gnostic documents, and other early and later Christian literature. These are the earliest known testimonies about Judas and include selections from the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John, the Acts of the Apostles, and relevant passages from Paul. The centerpiece of the book is the Gospel of Judas, followed by excerpts from three other Gnostic texts—the Dialogue of the Savior, the Concept of Our Great Power, and the "Round Dance of the Cross"—which may shed new light on the figure of Judas. A series of additional writings on Judas produced over the centuries provide glimpses of the vilification of Judas and the emergence of anti-Semitic themes.

Meyer offers evidence of traitors before Judas—the Genesis story of Joseph's brothers who sold him into slavery, the duplicitous friend of the poet in Psalm 41, and Melanthius the goatherd in Homer's Odyssey—all of which raise the question of whether the story of Judas Iscariot could be simply a piece of religious fiction derived from earlier stories.

Judas provides a rich collection of original sources that tell the story of Christianity's most infamous figure, offering the fullest understanding of Judas Iscariot's undeniable importance in the climax of Jesus's life.

Some good source material
By Dr. James Gardner
Meyer's book should really be called 1/4 a book. It is 184 pages long, but it is printed on 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 paper using a 1 1/2 line spacing. Which means it's probably about 120 pages long if printed as most books are printed. But, if you subtract the 35 pages of notes and the 26 page introduction, we are well under 100 pages. If you then subtract the dozens of pages that consist of translations of various texts (e.g., Gospel of Judas, Dialogue of the Savior) you probably have fewer than 50 pages of original text.

Much of that text is repetitious. Meyer tells us many times about the dates that the gospels were authored, about the verb paradidonai which means "handed over" and not "betrayed", about the fact that Paul never mentions Judas, etc. In a book that is already too short to really be called a book, such repetitions deprive us of even more information.

The bottom line is that $22.95 is a lot to pay for 1/4 book!

Putting all this aside, what value can we find in this 1/4 book? Meyer's excellent writing skills (excepting the repetition) are very much in evidence, as is his scholarship. But the book is really more of a platform to simply present texts about Judas. Meyer does very little to explain anything, merely to describe.

The various texts about Judas probably tell us more about the people who wrote the texts than they do about Judas. None of this important material is addressed by Meyer.

All things considered, there is very little to merit reading this 1/4 book. If you have no other source for some of the texts (e.g., Acts of John, The Concept of our Great Power, Arabic Infancy Gospel, etc.) then this may be a useful text. But otherwise your money (and time) is best spent elsewhere.

Marvin, do you see now what I said to you about 'Judas' as James?
By judaswasjames
I 'knew' Marvin Meyer by phone. I tried to tell him that Judas was the sacrifice in the original gnostic story from the Gospel of Judas, but he couldn't wrap his orthodox mind around it. The NT is a coverup. Plain and simply, the canon is a scam on the truth. The early Church elders wanted to start a new religion so they threw the one man who could have really saved them under the bus: James the Just. He became "Judas, the traitor."Now, Meyer's book. As far as it goes it is interesting for its wide-ranging sources. Just remember he was a Presbyterian, not a Gnostic. I practice mystic (gnostic) teaching, daily. This is not about betrayal. Even Marvin knew it. I so wish he could be around to see this become the revelation the Pachomian monks who buried it had in mind all along. It came a little later than expected but I guarantee to all, it won't be lost anymore! Rest my friend, you did a great job with this as far as your upbringing could allow.
The Bible says 'Saviors' - Obadiah 1:21: The New Testament coverup of saviors John the Baptist and James the Just

NOT SO DEFINITIVE
By T. Wasser
This slender book does not live up to its subtitle of being "the definitive collection of Gospels and legends about the infamous apostle of Jesus." There are many such legends omitted; for example, Benedeit's "Voyage of St. Brendan." Perhaps the author meant to limit the book to only legends from ancient times. The main section consists of a translation of the recently discovered Gospel of Judas. What is really disappointing and distracting in this book is the use of endnotes. Mostly the endnotes direct the reader to "cf." some biblical passage. In order to do so, the reader must have the Bible with the passage referred to immediately available. Although it would have markedly increased the size of this book, it would have been much more convenient to the reader if the endnote supplied the passage referred to, rather than to require the reader to interrupt the flow of his reading to look up the endnote, then to look up the passage in a separate book. Moreover, the constant use of the "cf." appears to reflect a laziness on the part of the author. There is little or no discussion of the importance or significance of the comparison. If the comparison is of minor importance, then the reader would be better served if the author would omit the distraction of endnotes and simply state the general point that the stories have certain similarities. All in all, it appears this book is merely one more exploitation of the discovery of the Gospel of Judas, dressed up in pseudo-scholarship for the masses.

Whether it was a Ginsu knife, George Foreman Grill, Tony Robbins' motivational book, kitchen device by Ron Popeil, or any of the countless other famous products that have been marketed on infomercials over the years, admit it: you or someone you know has bought one—and you're not alone. Last year, one out of every three Americans picked up the phone and ordered a product from a television infomercial or home shopping network, and in But Wait . . . There's More! journalist (and infomercial addict) Remy Stern offers a lively, behind-the-scenes exploration of this enormous business—one that markets the world's most outrageous products using the most outrageous tactics.

Don't let the kitschy exterior fool you: behind the laughable demonstrations, goofy grins, and cheesy dialogue lies an industry larger than the film and music industries combined. The first book of its kind, But Wait . . . There's More! exposes the never-before-told story of the infomercial and home shopping phenomenon in all its excessive glory and its meteoric rise to become one of the most profitable businesses in America.

Along the way, Stern details the history behind the classic products and introduces readers to some of the most famous (and infamous) pitchmen and personalities in the business, including Tony Robbins, Billy Mays, Ron Popeil, Tony Little, Suzanne Somers, Kevin Trudeau, and Joe Francis. He also presents an in-depth look at the business behind the camera—the canny sales strategies, clever psychological tools, and occasionally questionable tactics marketers have used to get us to open up our wallets and spend, spend, spend.

Stern's eye-opening account also offers a penetrating look at how late-night television conquered the American consumer and provides insight into modern American culture: our rampant consumerism, our desire for instant riches, and our collective dream of perfect abs, unblemished skin, and gleaming white teeth. Both a compelling business story and a thoroughly entertaining piece of investigative journalism (with a touch of muckraking and social satire), But Wait . . . There's More! will ensure that you never look at those too-good-to-be-true deals the same way again.

From Publishers Weekly
In this lively exposé, journalist Stern dissects the direct-response marketing business (which includes both infomercials and home shopping networks), a $300 billion industry, larger than the film, music and video game industries combined. There's guilty-pleasure revelations aplenty: how the traditional sales pitch adapted to a televisual format by, for example, real-time number tracking that allows network officials to tell on-air talent, through tiny earpieces, that, say, twirling a piece of jewelry around a finger causes sales to spike and how hosts persuade Americans to buy products like the Inside-the-Shell Electric Egg Scrambler, Power Scissors, the Miracle Broom and, of course, the most successful on-air product to date, the celebrity-driven skin-care regime Proactiv. There's psychology here, too: the author describes the mindset of the typical late-night tired consumer, falling for tricks they wouldn't necessarily fall for in a store. Stern is the perfect host to this slightly seedy world, well-informed and "transfixed by the zany nature of it all." (Apr.)

America ... is an informercial? (Plus shipping and handling)
By Jasparaz
I read Steve Salerno's superb review of "But Wait" in the WSJ on March 25, instantly downloaded the book to my Kindle2, and dug in (after setting the font size much larger for my older eyes).

The author had me laughing many times, but, more seriously, there are countless tip and tricks revealed about the infomercial business and selling in general that make this a highly worthwhile read.

I also love talking with friends about the book because everyone knows or remembers the gadgets, get rich quick seminars, and celebrities who hawk pimple treatments and swamp land in Arkansas.

About a third of my way into "But Wait," I began having a strange fantasy: maybe we're all living inside one giant, massive informercial. After all, I bought my kindle2 based on the infomercials at amazon's website!

Fascinating
By P. Meltzer
I thought this book was great. Written in a very engaging style. The chapter on how the infomercials are created is worth the price of the book all by itself. Parts of it were a little depressing though, such as how easy it is to sucker people who don't have money and the long list of dishonest people who have "gotten away with it", in that, even if they had to pay some fines, it was nothing compared to what they earned. A photo section would have been nice. Also, I would have been interested to know if there were or are ANY infomercials advertising products that really are truly innovative or useful. The author would have you believe that the answer is no, but I wonder...

Interesting look at an interesting industry
By Charlie
About: Stern takes us a tour of the infomercial industry. The cast of characters includes legends like Tony Robbins, one of whose ads brought in $50,000 a minute, unsavory characters like Kevin Trudeau and his bogus "cures" and celebrities who seem to hawk most anything for a buck or to hold on to the last vestiges of fame. A glimpse behind the scenes gives us a look at the QVC "house" where they broadcast 24 hours a day. A few unsurprising "secrets" are revealed as well: The Magic Bullet has a $39.95 charge for shipping, the "other" knife is shown slicing an under ripe tomato while the infomercial knife cuts through an overripe one and don't be surprised if the product with a 30 day money back guarantee arrives on your doorstep on day 29.

Pros: Well-written, interesting look at the industry

Cons: While there is a references section in the back, there are no in-text citations.

Grade: B
