The narrative then travels back several weeks, tracing the relationships and events that have led to the somber assembly. Intoxicating from start to finish!

The year is 1899. While women and young ladies are supposed to be demure and proper in each and every thing they do; so is not the case for many of those living in New York City. Four young women, to be exact, who are committing different forms of wrongdoing, which would certainly turn heads and cause whispers in upper class society. Things that would leave them shunned. But, as long as no one finds out, I suppose it doesn't really matter. If those secrets are revealed, however, things may not be as...peachy keen as they are now.

Eighteen-year-old, Elizabeth Adora Holland, is the girl every gentleman wants to be with, and all the girls want to be. As far as society goes, Elizabeth is the ideal up-and-comer. She's demure, polite, pure, and breathtakingly beautiful. What society doesn't know about, however, are her late-night trysts with a certain member of her staff. Trysts that seem harmless and loving to Elizabeth and her...admirer; but would turn heads and cast her out of the inner circle in mere moments. When she is betrothed to the most sought-after bachelor in New York City, the world practically stops as wedding preparations begin. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's heart isn't in it, instead, her conscience and her true love take over, causing her to question her impending marriage. But with a horrible secret haunting her family, there is little she can do to save herself from a lifetime of misery, without taking matters into her own hands and doing something drastic.

While Elizabeth is the perfect model of society; her sixteen-year-old sister, Diana, is practically anti-proper manners and living. Penelope Hayes may be viewed by society as an improper floozy-esque young lady; but what she lacks in manners, she certainly makes up for in ravishing clothes, gorgeous looks, an estate that turns heads, and a bank account that leave people drowning in a puddle of their own drool. On the outside, it appears that Penelope and Elizabeth are best friends; but for those on the inside, it's quite obvious that Penelope's loath and jealousy of Elizabeth dominate their relationship. Especially when Elizabeth steals the man of her dreams away from her. Now she plans on destroying her future, no matter what it takes. As they say..."keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

Lina Broud has always been an outsider looking in at the privileged world of high society. As Elizabeth's maid, she once shared a close friendship with her employer. But times have changed. Elizabeth is too busy to be friends with someone beneath her, and Lina is too proud to go on serving someone so ungrateful. Luckily, Lina has some juicy gossip about Elizabeth. Gossip that could finally permit her entry into the glamorous world of high society. The question is whether or not she's capable of betray her childhood friend for a little cold, hard cash. It's amazing what type of effect money can have on someone.

I am beyond shocked to learn that this is Anna Godbersen's debut novel. From page one, her lavish descriptions of old time New York City, and high society hooked me; while her gossip-loving, well-dressed characters reeled me in. The scandal and mystery wrapped inside this charmed world, of course, didn't hurt the story at all. Rather, it added another dimension to the tale, making it incapable for the reader to put it down. While Elizabeth is a good girl doing bad things; and Penelope is a bad girl doing bad things; and Lina is a spiteful servant you can't help but dislike; Diana comes off as the most diverse, multi-dimensional character - at least in my eyes. Diana is the epitome of a girl gone wrong. She doesn't take direction from her elders, she spends her days devouring books, and she has no problem with smoking, or kissing random men. Her free spirit is overwhelmingly delightful; and, mixed with the characters of Lina, Penelope, and Elizabeth, Godbersen has woven a tightly knit story that leaves the reader craving more. And with a cliffhanger that would leave anyone salivating, there's no doubt in my mind that people won't be racing to the store for the next installment. Intoxicating from start to finish!

If only the book were as good as the cover

I wanted to love THE LUXE. I really did. And I only liked it.

The book begins at the funeral of Elizabeth Holland, 1899 Manhattan's ideal young lady of the upper class. She presumably drowned in the Hudson; her body has never been recovered. This should make for a really interesting book, exploring her death and the possible causes and how everyone reacts, right? Unfortunately, this book is not about Elizabeth's death but the lives of five teenagers living in upper class Manhattan.

Elizabeth does not want to marry Henry Schoonmaker and he doesn't want to marry her, but neither have a choice. Elizabeth's family is faced with ruin if she doesn't marry; Henry, who is quite a scoundrel, is faced with being disinherited. But Penelope Hayes, daughter of a newly wealthy family, wants Henry for herself and will do anything to get him, and servant Lina Broud, who hates her mistress Elizabeth, might prove dangerous.

The characters are all stereotypical or boring. There's absolutely no thought behind the characters of Penelope, Lina, and Henry. They are exactly what you'd expect to find, and there's nothing about them that makes them stand out. Elizabeth is just dull, and the adults too have very little personality. Only Diana Holland, Elizabeth's rebellious and slightly immature younger sister, shows any potential for developing into a memorable literary character. I will read the second book, but mainly to find out what happens to Diana.

And then the writing...Godbersen tried to make her writing stand out by using vivid words, but honestly in the end her writing just seemed stilted. She seemed to do a lot more telling than showing, and sometimes she added details in places where they disrupted the story. Overall, the writing made what should have been an exciting book hard to get into.

This wasn't a bad book. I did enjoy it, but it's not as good as I was expecting.

What year is it? Oh really, 1899? Yeah, right.

I normally dislike writing negative reviews, but in this case I feel absolutely inspired to. I received this book as an Advanced Readers copy from the Harper Collins First Look program, I am I truly expected to be blown away by what promised to be an excellent historical portrayal of teens at the turn of the nineteenth century. Instead, I felt like the characters in the book had been plucked from some modern day series like the Gossip Girl books. I am sure there are plenty of naughty girls of the upper crust in any time period, but it seemed to me that all the girls were lacking in the basic decorum of the time.

That is not to say the book was on the whole terrible. The descriptions of the lavish way of life certainly inspired me, placing me within the glittering late Victorian world. My main qualm was the characters. To me, they just didn't seem to embody the spirit of the age. I am not a prude, to be sure, as I read things that have sexual depictions, but the casualness of the depicted sex left a bad taste in my mouth. I could not care much for any of the characters because they seemed so bratty and duplicitous with their so-called friends. There wasn't even a good loathing hate that can come from an excellent depiction of a villain, just a dislike for everyone.

Perhaps I should have thought twice about wanting to read a book that talked about the bad girls acting bad and the good girls also acting bad, but I suppose I just wanted the book to be something else. So while I have been a little scathing, there is certainly an audience for this book, if you like the kind of modern melodrama with plenty of sex and betrayal along with a dose of "friendship." And there are beautiful descriptions of the luxury of the times which are quite impressive and vivid. A mixed bag for me, but sure to be a catch for those who like this sort of thing.

The only complaint I have for this publication is that the concordance was made with such small type it is impossible for me to read without magnification. This is marketed as a large print edition after all.

Other information not readily apparent from the description. This does come with a usefull green ribbon bookmark. There are no "words of Christ in red." This is an Anglicized edition which mean British word usage and spelling like "odour" and "colour."

This is too wide horizontally! No book cover can fit it. It is an awkward size to sit and read but it is a larger print and that is what I was looking for. Take lessons from the protestant large print Bibles and make it durable and practical!

Not really XL print

According to the description, it was a large print, easy-to-read Bible. It was not. I bought this for my mom who has low-vision. Neither she nor I could read it. I would only recommend if you have normal vision.

Very Accurate!

First I want to start off by saying that I am a woman (straight). I originally purchased this for myself (thanks to the Valentine's Day discount, lol) out of curiosity. Not all men are right when it comes to women, and not all women are right when it comes to men; this is due to a lack of education/false information (cosmo anyone?). I was very impressed by this book. It was written in a *guide* format and was very blunt. Bassil didn't beat around the bush about what the average woman wants and constantly reminded the reader how to keep her happy during all stages of your relationship with her. [Most] women don't want to be coddled 24/7 or showered with praise at all times of the day and night, but it is really nice to feel appreciated: little reminders that you're still physically and emotionally attracted to us. Bassil, IMO, does a very nice job on listing various ways to keep the spark alive after you've been together for a while as well as how to 'woo' a woman.

Whether you are a newbie in the game of love or a 'pro,' I think that every guy will benefit from this guide. Not everyone knows everything and not all women are the same, but we do share a lot of similarities. :)

Excellent coverage of fundamentals

This book provides a very balanced coverage on relationships, covering many different viewpoints/stages. Reviews hazards and ideal scenarios through plausible examples. Well written, provides excellent motivation and explanations to help the reader recognize the importance and value of the "common sense" principles in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I like to read books that deal with the understanding of women and yeah it does include the occasional cosmo. The book was well written and a easy read. It helps provide a foundation while also providing the information required to build and tailor the ideas to your personal situation. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This time Banks is not only complicated and depressed, but he’s also completely offstage for about half of the action, on holiday in the American West and seen only briefly. Fans will be disappointed, but the absence of Banks picks up the pace quite a bit. Banks’ sometime lover and longtime ally, Inspector Annie Cabott, fills the void nicely in a case that begins when a former neighbor of Banks’ reports her daughter has a gun in the home. The Armed Response Team arrives and tragically mucks up a tense situation. Part of Robinson’s narrative talent is his ability to convert police procedure and politics into gripping reading. The gun at the scene of the botched police operation belonged to an exotic, handsome young man, boyfriend of the girl holding the gun and acquainted with Banks’ daughter, Tracy. The bulk of the book is an absolutely stunning examination of how Tracy fell for this bad boy, hiding him from police and coming to the horrific awareness that he is a sociopath more than willing to kill her. We don’t really need Banks when he gets back—the character study of Tracy and the tension of her situation drive the book. A change of pace for the series, to be sure, but another outstanding crime novel from Robinson. --Connie Fletcher

"She was having her own adventure now."

While DCI Alan Banks of the North Yorkshire police is on holiday in America, Detective Inspector Annie Cabbot interviews an old friend and former neighbor of his, Mrs. Juliet Doyle. Juliet has come to the Eastvale station to report that her daughter, Erin, somehow got hold of a gun and brought it into their home. Erin's mother was hoping that, as a favor, Alan could take care of the matter without causing an uproar. Since Banks is still in California, the case is handled according to standard protocol, with disastrous consequences.

Meanwhile, Tracy, Alan's twenty-four year old daughter, who lived with Erin and a third roommate named Rose, takes up with Erin's former boyfriend, thirty-one year old Jaff McCready, a "nasty piece of work." "He was good-looking, bright, a real charmer, and maybe crooked." Tracy is ready to leave her "good girl" persona behind, and Jaff seems to be just the guy to hang out with while she reinvents herself. Peter Robinson's "Bad Boy" describes what happens when a naïve young woman gets involved with a reckless and self-absorbed man. Annie tries to help Tracy but, unfortunately, Jaff is far more dangerous than he appears, and the situation quickly spirals out of control. Soon, Jaff and Tracy are on the run, not only from the police but also from Jaff's confederates, who are even more sadistic and ruthless than he is. Soon Tracy realizes that "what had yesterday seemed like a mildly exciting lark was now turning out to be something more serious."

"Bad Boy" is one of Robinson's lesser entries in his usually superb series featuring DCI Alan Banks. The problems include: an underwritten plot in which the villains are stock characters who behave all too predictably; Alan's absence until the second half of the novel; Tracy's stupidity, which is hard to credit in the adult child of a police officer; a pat and somewhat maudlin conclusion. When Robinson is at the top of his game, he fine-tunes his characters and explores underlying themes that give his police procedurals depth and weight that formulaic genre novels often lack.

Its flaws notwithstanding, "Bad Boy" is a readable enough story about the belated maturation of Tracy Banks, who learns the hard way how miserable "bad boys" can be. Banks, who has neglected Tracy in the past, tries to redeem himself in her eyes. Police bureaucracy and politics rear their ugly heads, as usual. Banks's old confederate, the sly Dirty Dick Burgess, makes an appearance, and there may be some unfinished business between former lovers Alan Banks and Annie Cabbot. One of the more intriguing police officers is Constable Nerys Powell, who has a bit of Alan Banks in her. She is a maverick who ignores regulations when it suits her. Also noteworthy is Jamaica-born Winsome Jackman, a statuesque, smart, witty, and thoroughly professional detective sergeant. As usual, the author nicely describes the picturesque Yorkshire countryside, where tourists flock to gaze at scenic vistas. Robinson has written a serviceable mystery, but the uninspired dialogue and conventional plot prevent "Bad Boy" from taking its place among the best of Banks.

Sisterhood of Stupidity

In the realm of pop culture the female offspring with bad taste in men and a propensity for landing in life threatening-peril has a long history. Audra in The Big Valley, Diana Fairgate in Knots Landing, Kim Bauer in 24, to name but a few, inspired in viewers like me a weekly mixture of disappointment and awe. Disappointment that yet another perfectly good opportunity to kill them had been squandered and awe that any writer could think stupidity makes compelling entertainment. Into this rich tradition Peter Robinson's Bad Boy launches DCI Banks' daughter Tracey Banks, hitherto not renown for her imbecility.

Tracey, however, is a comer. And she's surrounded by several idiotic characters and situations that serve to vault her own burgeoning dimwittedness into the stratosphere. In the first few chapters we are confronted with England's dumbest mother - what do you do if you suspect your child is in trouble? Why you toddle down to the local police station; a "gun removal" procedure that despite several characters noting that it is "by the book" strikes me as being taken from the adventures of Larry, Moe and Curly; a cardboard cutout police villain; and Tracey, who has decided to call herself Francesca to spice up her boring life. Is it any wonder that Banks himself would choose to flee the jurisdiction and vacation in California? Sadly, he's not in search of higher IQs, he's off searching his soul after the collapse of his relationship with a younger woman and his encounter with MI5. He's on a California whine tour.

To make matters even more entertaining, Robinson has decided to delete the mystery portion from this installment of this mystery series. You know who did it. Banks knows who did it. The only person who is momentarily dim on this is, you guessed it, Tracey. Her decision to cleave unto the bad boy of the title is one the goofier aspects of the book - he was her friend's boyfriend, she just fancied him until the cops got involved. Then it's shopping, trashing Dad's place and running from the man all day. Like Gym, Tanning and Laundry, only even dumber.

As if this isn't enough fun, Robinson then tosses in a super-criminal known as The Farmer (cue the foreboding music) and his two psychotic henchmen. Then he adds a graphic torture tableau. It's a relief because for the last 20 books I've been saying to myself, Excellent characterizations, complex mysteries and genuine moral dilemmas are all fine and good but when is Robinson going to get serious and deliver more gratuitous victimization of women.

I'm not a fan of this book despite being a fan of the series. Robinson can do much, much better than this book that reads more like a plea for a movie deal than an entry into what has been up to know an extremely well-written, well-plotted, thoughtful mystery series. If you're a fan of Robinson and Banks, you may want to skip this one.

Not Up to the Standards of A Good Detective Banks Mystery

I've been a fan of the Detective Banks series for a while but this is definitely one of the weaker books in this series. It is not at the level of In a Dry Season (Inspector Banks Mysteries). In fact, Detective Banks doesn't appear in this mystery until about 100 pages into it.

The novel starts off with Julia Doyle, an old neighbor of Detective Alan Banks coming to the station house very upset. She found a gun in her daughter, Erin's, room. For those of you who don't know, unlicensed gun possession in England carries a mandatory five year sentence and always consists of jail time. Detective Banks is on vacation and so the case is turned over to others in the squad. Tragically, in the course of confiscating the gun, Julia's husband is tasered and dies as a result.

Meanwhile, we are privy to the fact that Erin, as well as Detective Banks' daughter, Tracy, are attracted to 'bad boys'. Their latest par amour is Jaff McReady, a seamy guy who is into bad stuff. As the story progresses we find out that he is trying to outfox bigger bad boys and get away with their drugs and money. In the course of things, Tracy turns from his girlfriend into his hostage. It is up to Detective Banks and his team to apprehend Jaff and save Tracy.

Their are lots of holes in the plot and the characterizations are weak. The quality of the writing is very good as is usual for Peter Robinson but he just didn't delve deeply enough into the characters and rationales of Erin, Tracy, Jaff, or The Farmer. Had he done this, the book would be longer but much more satisfying.

British philosopher Flew has long been something of an evangelist for atheism, debating theologians and pastors in front of enormous crowds. In 2004, breathless news reports announced that the nonagenarian had changed his mind. This book tells why. Ironically, his arguments about the absurdity of God-talk launched a revival of philosophical theists, some of whom, like Alvin Plantinga and Richard Swinburne, were important in Flew's recent conversion to theism. Breakthroughs in science, especially cosmology, also played a part: if the speed or mass of the electron were off just a little, no life could have evolved on this planet. Perhaps the arrogance of the New Atheists also emboldened him, as Flew taunts them for failing to live up to the greatness of atheists of yore. The book concludes with an appendix by New Testament scholar and Anglican bishop N.T. Wright, arguing for the coherence of Christian belief in the resurrection. Flew praises Wright, though he maintains some distance still from orthodox Christianity. The book will be most avidly embraced by traditional theists seeking argumentative ammunition. It sometimes disappoints: quoting other authorities at length, citing religion-friendly scientists for pages at a time and belaboring side issues, like the claim that Einstein was really a religious believer of sorts. About the Author

Philosopher and former atheist Antony Flew set the agenda for modern atheism with his 1950 essay "Theology and Falsification," which became the most widely reprinted philosophical publication of the last half century. Flew has published over thirty books, including God and Philosophy, The Presumption of Atheism, and How to Think Straight. He spent twenty years as professor of philosophy at the University of Keele and has also held positions at Oxford, the University of Aberdeen, and the University of Reading. He now lives in Reading, England.

The Road Less Traveled By

Several years ago I read Antony Flew's book, "Thinking about Thinking" in its American incarnation (titled "How to Think Straight"). I immediately discerned three things. Flew was (1) a profound thinker, (2) an atheist, and (3) a decent human being. I was so impressed by his intellect that when I reached the last page, I turned back to page one and immediately read the book again.

I have since bought "God and Science" and "Merely Mortal". In "God and Science", Flew weighed the case for the Christian God and found it wanting, and in "Merely Mortal" he decided that there was no life after death. As I understand "There is a God", Flew sticks to both those positions. Flew has found God, but he has found Aristotle's god, the impersonal Unmoved Mover which, like God in Hobbes' "Leviathan" was the first cause of every subsequent effect. Aristotle's god is so ungodly that I have always considered him (Aristotle) the functional equivalent of an atheist. Flew's take on the Christian view of God seems to be as follows: God hasn't been proven to be like that, but it would be nice if he were. I can't say for sure, but I don't think Flew's assessment of the Christian God was any different before he renounced atheism. Flew has always been somewhat of an anomaly among atheists--an atheist who was polite to theists. A wit once said that an evangelical Christian was a fundamentalist with good manners. Flew was an atheist with good manners.

I've read a lot of atheist polemic, and I'm turned off by the ad hominem character of most of their arguments. It puts me in mind of Cicero's old dictum, "When you have no case, abuse the plaintiff". I've also read a lot of fundamentalist polemic which turns me off for the same reason. When an argument generates more heat than light, you have cause to suspect the bona fides of the person making the argument.

A New York Times article maligned Flew's book as the pseudo-scientific product of a "senescent scholar". Flew never claims that his book is science. He says it is philosophy which has been guided by scientific discovery made after he announced his atheism in 1950. I will admit that I had to look "senescent" up in the dictionary. It means "old". Okay. Are we to presume that all Social Security recipients are too dumb to be listened to? The terms "pseudo-science" and "senescent" are examples of subtle ad hominem arguments, designed to appeal to emotion rather than logic. The article engages in several other ad hominem arguments under the guise of factual reporting. I'll mention only one other.

The article suggests that a friend of Flew's, Ray Varghese, is a Christian "autodidact" who exploited poor old senescent Flew in the writing of the book. (I looked up "autodidact". It's a self-educated person. Shame on Varghese for teaching himself). It says on the cover of the book that the two collaborated. How did Varghese exploit Flew? By writing too much of the book? Varghese rebutted the article by admitting that he was responsible for the colorful anecdotes and witty section headings, but maintained that the core thought was through-and-through Flew.

I found this book yesterday afternoon and read it yesterday evening, blissfully ignorant of the controversy. These are the impressions I formed before I became aware of the controversy (I haven't changed them after reading about the controversy):

1. The work is not as rigorously reasoned as previous work by Flew. This was both good and bad. It was easier to read, but not as challenging.

2. The work repeated some recent arguments made by theists (such as the "fine tuning" argument) without subjecting them to the searching inquiry characteristic of Flew's earlier work.

3. The heart and soul of the book is Flew, and it is not that different from the Flew who was an atheist. Flew was always willing to change his mind if someone could show him through rational argument that there was a God. Someone did, and he changed his mind--but not much.

Most people come to God through faith, not reason. Flew has taken the road less traveled by, and that has made quite a difference. He has only approached Theism. You might say that he has come to the strait gate, but he has yet to enter thereby. I respected Flew from my first encounter with him, and this book has increased my respect.

READ THE BOOK

Call me old-fashioned, but I thought the POINT of reviewing books--even books on Amazon--was to review the actual book that one has actually READ. It seems now that it has become a place to "spike" books that you haven't read, and don't want others to read.

Unlike other pseudo-reviewers, I've actually read Flew's There is a God (and interviewed Flew as well). Anyone who has actually read it--and I wonder if Mark Oppenheimer did, given the inattention to the substance of the book in his infamous NYT piece--understands that it is a terse description of Flew's long, drawn out intellectual journey toward God--a journey of two decades. Twenty years; not twenty minutes or twenty days. Flew wasn't struck by God on his way to Damascus like St. Paul; he was slowly, ever so slowly brought to intellectual assent to a Deism (about the thinnest belief in God one can have).

Thus, the entire focus of a reader of Flew's There is a God SHOULD be on the list of books Flew cites as definitive in the slow changing of his mind, not on niggling debates about the slowness of Flew's mind at this precise point.

Roy Varghese (his co-author) has been with him for a good part of that journey (as have other believers), and was instrumental in helping Flew gather together his twenty year sojourn to God. IF there were some kind of a Christian conspiracy to use Flew as a mouthpiece, certainly Varghese et al would have made Flew's "conversion" far more exciting, and even more, would have him become a card-carrying Christian rather than, as he adamantly maintains, a Deist (not even a Theist!--Flew corrected me on this point in an interview with him). In regard to Varghese's The Wonder of the World (one of the books that helped convince Flew of the scientific case for an intelligent Creator God), Oppenheimer characterizes it as scientific hack work. Interesting! Why does it also come recommended by TWO Nobel Prize Winners (Charles Townes, inventor of the laser; and Arno Penzias, who co-discovered Cosmic Microwave Bacground Radiation), and also physicist (and non-believer) Robert Jastrow? Are they also senile? Come on, folks!

As even Oppenheimer admits, the kind of arguments that Flew cites as demonstrating that the latest science leads (at least) to Deism, are those used by a whole host of other eminent scientists and philosophers. Is Paul Davies senile?

The simple truth is that there are all too many who don't want the scientific and philosophic arguments that convinced Flew of God's existence to receive any recognition. They will do anything to stop others from reading Flew's book. Perhaps they should read it themselves?

Useful- But Incomplete

Antony Flew opened up a firestorm of controversy when he publicly announced his conversion from atheism to deism in late 2004. As one of the most influential atheists of the 20th century, his change in mind was stunning. Many atheists were quick to denounce Flew- claiming that he was losing touch with reality in his old age. Flew, however, stood his ground, insisting that his conversion was real, thoughtful, and based on compelling evidence for the existence of a Creator.

In "There is a God", Flew recounts his life leading up to his conversion. Starting from his humble beginnings as the son of a preacher and leading to his persuasive defense of atheism as an academic, Flew gives us a brief glimpse into his life and work. Along the way, he points out that he has had many radical `conversions' in thinking. In his view, switching from atheism to deism is no particularly big deal. He just followed the evidence where it led.

The second part of the book offers a brief discussion of this evidence. Remarkably, in sharp distinction to the numerous atheist authors writing today, Flew contends that scientific discoveries (buttressed, of course, by philosophical arguments) have vindicated the existence of God. He mentions three areas where this is starkly the case. The first is the fact that nature obeys laws. The second is the existence of intelligently organized life. The third is the very existence of nature.

Unfortunately, Flew's discussion of these issues is rather cursory. Those looking for a detailed exposition need to explore elsewhere. Nevertheless, Flew's treatment is a welcome departure from the terrible philosophical treatment of scientific issues found in many of the new atheist books. Flew rightly calls out those scientists who offer philosophical arguments concerning the implications of the scientific facts. While they are perfectly within their rights to offer their philosophical opinion, these opinions must be judged by the canons of philosophy, not science. All too often, folks like Richard Dawkins assume that their scientific expertise entails that their philosophical views should be taken as authoritative. Flew rightly points out the distinction here.

Flew's "There is a God" is a quick and easy read. If you are interested in the life and work of Antony Flew, then this book will prove useful. Those looking for an extensive discussion of the arguments for the existence of God or for a refutation of atheism must look elsewhere.

Well, if you're wondering whether or not to buy vol 2, I think you should....

The plot was more involved than the first book, which made me happy, partly because it was longer I suppose. Over all, I love the characters. They make these hilarious expressions at just the right moment! I honestly love all of them, even the side characters - for instance one of Claude's groupies ducks for cover when found in the bathroom because she's avoiding her lack of reflection being discovered and then she makes up some snarky comment about losing her contact lens. It remains just light enough throughout that even in tense situations there will be the occasional funny.

I'm looking forward to the third book! :3 Even more character and plot development I hope is soon to come.

Delightful and Quirky Addition to the VK Series

One of the better examples of Amerimanga that I've ever read, this installment of the Vampire Kisses series doesn't disappoint those looking for a good, humorous story with catchy artwork and likable characters.
I'd recommend reading the first Blood Relatives installment before jumping into this one, as well as the novels, though one doesn't necessarily have to read the novels to be able to pick up the manga.
It's all just better together! If you like vampires and goth hijinks, then you'll love Vampire Kisses.

Raven is back, along with her vampire boyfriend, Alexander, and trouble is still following them around town.

Alexander's cousin, Claude, along with his gang, is unfortunately continuing to grace them with their presence - and it is definitely not for good reasons. Raven is doing all she can to protect her family from these half-vampires, even resorting to the age old trick of garlic necklaces placed around the house.

But Raven knows that the only way Claude will leave and stop bothering her is if they finally find the vials that will aid them in turning into true vampires. So now Raven and Alexander must come up with a plan to find the vials before Claude can get to them.

Alexander then remembers a map when he was little that could possibly be the key to finding the vials; if only he could remember where that map is now. Not being able to work together during the day, Raven and Alexander must work quickly with the limited time they have, in order to prevent Claude and his gang from becoming the full vampires that they have yearned to be.

But can a team of two go up against a gang of four?

Quick and entertaining, the second in the VAMPIRE KISSES manga series is just as captivating as the first. The plot is gripping, the drawings are amazing, and each page will have readers at the edge of their seats. Fans of the novel series will want to sink their teeth into this manga installment - just be warned, it definitely isn't over yet.

It was ok, not fantastic

The plot of the book was interesting. Although some of it seemed borrowed from other novels; a couple scenes were very reminiscent of "The Raven Prince" by Elizabeth Hoyt. I think the book started off well because it was exciting and fast-paced. Then there was the tension between the heroine and hero...and then there was MORE tension. That lasted about the second half of the book where Seth struggles with lust for Jane and his resentment toward her and love. Then in the very end of the last chapter, he finally realizes his love...but out of no where. I think something dramatic should have happened for him to realize his true feelings for her. The tension was built up really high and then it just...fizzled.

Also, Jane seemed kind of pathetic. She loved him all her life, even though he was infatuated with her sister, and then he treated her really badly when they first married. But she seemed to just give into him.

Overall, the climax of the story was too abrupt and didn't feel heart-felt. It just didn't live up to all the excitement and tension of the story. It could have been so much better had the author put a little more effort into the ending. I felt really disappointed.

She is even less prepared for his surprisingly amorous reaction to her now. It must be the mask, of course. If he knew who she really was, he would never touch her, not in a million years. Would he?

As a fan of historical romance, I found Sophie Jordan's ONE NIGHT WITH YOU very enjoyable. This delightful romance was wonderfully three-dimensional, fraught with sexual heat, intrigue, and tortured lovers. Ms. Jordan weaves a story that the reader can picture almost as if they were standing on the sidelines watching it all in real time.

From the moment we meet the main characters, I felt as if I knew them. Indeed, I wanted to know them - an element most important for both the story's hero and heroine. While extremely likable, both bear pain from their past that causes each to doubt whether or not the other can truly love them, even as they crave that very emotion from each other. A shared history makes it even more difficult for this pair to come together without the benefit of anonymity they enjoy in the beginning of the story.

But when circumstances demand the mask come off and Jane finally reveal herself to the man she adores as the mysterious woman who has so enthralled him, the story really heats up! The fireworks really let loose as Seth and Jane are forced to deal with each other and face their feelings and their past.

What disappointed me about ONE NIGHT WITH YOU was that I felt there were still too many loose ends when the last page was turned. While we learn about the underhanded deeds perpetrated on Jane by the book's villains, they never really get their come-uppance, leaving the reader without some closure there. In addition, we are left wondering what will happen to Jane's stepson, who as a minor is still in the clutches of his evil uncle. Perhaps these are items intended for a future sequel, but there was no sense that there would be a sequel when the story finished.

Regardless of those disappointments, ONE NIGHT WITH YOU is still a marvelously entertaining read. I am very glad to have met both Seth and Jane and have the chance to enjoy their romance with them.
