Is this the end? *SPOILERS MAYBE*

As stated in other reviews, this book picks up after the second installment with the two sisters--Kimi and Hana--trying to put a stop to their evil Uncle, who is trying to attain the status of Shogun.

The book's ending is open-ended, and it is difficult to know if this is the last book, or if there will be another on the way.

Another nitpick are some of the names: In the first book, there is Master Goku. In this book we meet Master Akira. (And then there is Akane).

The first two names are obviously based on anime characters: Goku from Dragonball Z, and Akira from the same-titled film. If the story wasn't so good, those little tidbits may have been distracting. (Btw, there is a character named Akane in the anime Ranma 1/2).

Moreover, the finale with the reveal of an assassin is a bit far-fetched, as we are told the assassin (a ninja female) is jumping on the heads and shoulders of the people standing about in the room of the Shogun as Kimi fights her.

All in all, pretty good. Not as strong as the first and second installments, but I am looking forward to seeing how this plot ends. (Is this the end? I hope not).

Journey Through Fire contains a lot of blood shed although it is touching to me in the end. 2 sisters, 1 mother, and a brother endure a lot of pain, betrayal and trouble. Their life is at stake since their uncle is so selfish and wants them executed. There are parts that seem a bit boring. Overall I enjoyed this book and to me it is worth reading.

Eliade: A Worthy Read

Mircea (Murch uh) Eliade writes ably and clearly about the difference between myth and fable. He relates myth as the clear connection to divine reality. Myth is the connection to primordial truth as sensed by early societies.

Read this book if you read Joseph Campbell, Bede Griffiths, John Rohr, the Upanishads and others of this genre.

"Time is of the essence."

In Mary Jane Clark's "It Only Takes a Moment," Eliza Blake is the popular host of a morning television show who dotes on her seven-year-old daughter, Janie. When Janie is abducted along with her nanny, Eliza is devastated. She is inconsolable, even though her colleagues and friends rally around her and give her much needed support. The question is: Who took Janie and Mrs. Garcia and why? FBI agents explore every credible lead, hoping to find the missing pair before it is too late.

Clark's writing style is very simple and straightforward. Each chapter is, at most, a few pages long and some are as short as half a page. The characters are thinly drawn: Eliza is beautiful, bright, even-tempered, and thoroughly likeable. Carmen Garcia, Eliza's Guatemalan housekeeper, is an altruistic and pious woman who puts Janie's welfare ahead of her own. Eliza's devoted boyfriend, Mack, flies in from London to be at her side during this difficult time. The villains are ciphers with no distinct personalities. Clark throws in a number of red herrings and a final twist to deliver the obligatory surprise ending.

This is a formulaic and unchallenging thriller in which Clark deals superficially with the predatory nature of media executives who want to get the story first at all costs. Clark's writing should appeal to readers who dislike overt violence and profanity, since the author assiduously avoids explicit language and gore. "It Only Takes a Moment" is escapist entertainment suitable for an airplane trip or a lazy summer afternoon.

A Good, Easy Read

I love mystery/suspense novels, and this one really came across. It's a quick, easy read, although the story keeps the reader engaged and turning pages.

"It Only Takes A Moment" follows a kidknapping through the five days the girl is missing. It is laid out in short chapters that jump between the girl, her mom, her nanny, the mom's best friends, the mom's boss, the FBI, and the kidknappers.

The plot includes several good red herrings and a (small) twist at the very end that really makes the story. Note: Mystery/suspense readers will find the plot similar to another popular novel. I see this as coincidence, and it didn't affect the quality or enjoyment of the book.

Not worth your time

I've read all of her books and usually enjoy them but this one was a big disappointment. In fact if she repeated herself, which happens quite often in this book, I'd just skim ahead. I couldn't wait to finish it so I could move on to something more interesting. The story fell flat and I wouldn't recommend it.

Important book, important topic.

I read this book in basically one sitting. It was a page-turner, in that I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. "End" is a funny word for the ending because the author Baby Halder is still so young with a long life ahead of her. This is a phenomenal book, not just because it tells Baby's story, but because it tells a story that millions of women around the world share. And we need to hear this story. And what makes it more phenomenal is that the author was able to break free from abuse and poverty to write an internationally published book and share her story of a life less ordinary.

I spent much of the book wondering how I could've dealt with the loss of my mother or the tolerated murder of my sister or the unimagineable thought of my 12 year old daughter getting married and having children, or if I would've had the courage to get on a train with my children and nothing more to try to find a better life.

An issue with the writing in this book is that the author frequently switches from 1st to 3rd person, but I looked at it like less of a grammatical error and more of the author speaking in 3rd person when the topic was very painful. I really highly recomend this book.

Really wanted to love this novel but couldnt even finish it.....

I feel horrible for giving this book a bad rating, but I want to be as honest as possible with my reviews. I really wanted to love this book, for the author's life and everything she had to endure is truly remarkable. I also thought this would be an important book to read as a woman, due to the main theme of how women are treated in other parts of the world. I just had a very hard time reading it because it was so poorly written, so choppy and confusing at times (i.e., going from one type of narrative to another - writing in first person to writing about herself in the third person; confusing dialogue; and paragraphs that seemed to end at times without continuing the thought or story. While I acknowledge how amazing it is for someone who came from such a difficult upbringing and little education to have written a novel that not only got published, but is beloved in so many countries, I wish there was a lot more editing, so that her story could have been told more fluidly, as it truly is a story to be told and shared with the world. Perhaps it was lost in translation somehow when transcribed from Hindi into English?
Regardless, I did not personally like this book, although the author's story is absolutely incredible and worth knowing about. Therefore, I can only recommend it with caution- if you can look psat the writing, you may enjoy it.

A book less ordinary

Yes, the style is basic, perhaps even crude, but Halder's sometimes halting prose is effective in communicating the pain and chaos of her life. The abrupt transitions between first and third person are very effective: they allow both the author and the reader some distance from painful introspections.
While there are many very distressing episodes, the book is basically hopeful. Allow this book to evoke empathy, and perhaps even motivate you to act on behalf of women, children, and/or the poor.

About the Author
With Old Yeller, Fred Gipson secured his place as one of the finest novelists in America. The book was published to instant acclaim and has become one of the most beloved children's classics ever written. Since its publication in 1956, Old Yeller has won countless awards, including the 1957 Newbery Honor. Mr. Gipson's other works include both fiction and non-fiction. He grew up in the Texas hill country and died in 1973.

William H. Armstrong grew up in Lexington, Virginia. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and did graduate work at the University of Virginia. He taught ancient history and study techniques at the Kent School for fifty-two years. Author of more than a dozen books for adults and children, he won the John Newbery Medal for Sounder in 1970 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1986.

Three Great Dog Stories

Although I am past middle age, I still go back and read these wonderful stories. I recently purchased these for my grandchildren, and they enjoyed them as much as I did the first time I read them many years ago. I hope my grandchildren collect them and save them for their children, because they never go out of date.

IMy 8 year old grandson asked me to buy this book, because he had seen it at school. Although, of course, he lost interest in the book, I know that he will enjoy it when he gets older, so I will save it.

Just what a 9 yr. old boy wants

My 9 yr. old grandson asked for Old Yeller for one of his christmas presents. He loves to read, and he loves animals. When I saw Old Yeller in the same book with 2 other dog stories, I had to buy it. He opened the gift, gave me a hug and a kiss, and started reading immediately.This book on dogs was exactly what he wanted. Advice for Happiness

Alexandra is a favorite author. I love her possitive outlook and energy. This little book written in her signature essay style is a gem. She writes, "Think of your priorities. Focus on all you have. Stay centered. Be still. If you were looking down from the level of total awareness, how important are the things that cause you stress and worry? They are passing, fleeting, and perhaps, meaningless. Worrying about some future negative possibility is poisonous, blocking you from experiencing the magnificence of this wonderful moment that you will never get back." Full of real beauty and real wisdom, I can't imagine a person who wouldn't benefit from thinking over some of these issues.

There is a problem here...

So I got this book from my mom for Christmas and I have to say that I am having a very negative reaction to the author. While there may appear to be snippits of life-learned advice, when you actually read her examples, it's a bit ridiculous. Her key for living a happy life is to be selfish. Oh, and being priviledged doesn't hurt either. Don't want to be bogged down with spending time with friends or volunteering, don't commit to anything! She tells this lovely story about screwing over her husband when SHE suggested having a dinner party for his colleagues and then when a better offer came up, she abandonded him and he was on his own for entertaining this crowd. Her lesson learned--don't plan things too far in advance because you never know if a better offer is around the corner. How about sticking to your committments? That is the kind of person you have to track down to get a wedding RSVP out of.

She also talks about dedicating your life to your kids but talks about how she refused to help them with homework. Nice.

This author struggles with what I call the Martha Stewart affliction. Fifteen years ago, you would watch the only Martha Stewart show on and realize two things...she has a talent that maybe you would like to have yourself and she has no clue that everyone else does not live like her. Martha got smart and realized her earnings were limited by only talking to the rich people and took her case to K-Mart. Stoddard is Martha 15 years ago. She comes off as a snob and a bit selfish and yet, you can tell in her stories that she doesn't get it. Real life means making choices and sacrifices. I don't get the feeling that she has had to do a whole lot of either of those things.

Most Ridiculous Book Ever!! Don't Waste Your Money

Where do I start with this book? I am not sure how it got published. This author definitely sounds like she came from a background of wealth and status, whose most difficult life experience was her massage being cancelled, or her maid quitting. She also seems to have no clue that other readers are most likey not in the same privileged position as she is. It comes off as a rich woman explaining to her maid why the maid should save her pennies. I don't mean to sound bitter- this book was just laughable. Some actual excerpts from her book were

"In my desire to give my children honey, I raised them as though they were my grandchildren. They both went to good, strict private schools, where their teachers demanded a great deal from them. I tended to hug then and reinforce their great qualities and strenghts." I just shook my head when I read this. I actually re-read it 3 times. Not everyone has the money to send their children to private schools to do a parents "dirty" work. Even if I did have the money to send my children to private school, it felt like she didn't want to seem "strict" or "difficult" in any way, or for her children to not like her, she she was the one to give the lollipops and ballons while the teachers did the discipline. Not admirable. Not someone I would take life lessons from.

Another excerpt that stood out was when she advised to pay attention to your children's requests. She mentions that one time she asked her daughter where she wanted to go on her winter break, and when her daughter replied PARIS..they flew to Paris, just her and her 2 daughers. How lovely!

This book has to some small degree facts that are helpful bits on life such as being grateful and not expecting gratitude, and Pain is inevitable; Suffering is a choice. I suppose it could be a decent "feel good" book to give a teenage girl. I just wish the author would have left her own privileged life detaits out of the book and not peppered it with such annoying details as the fact that she listens to Enya while opening her gifts to make some sort of ceremony out of it. Seriously, she wrote that too.

So basically, read this book if you want a good laugh, or if you know a very young teenage girl who needs a few tiny shallow bits of wisdom such as "learn how to style your own hair" (Yes, that was in there too..)
