Valuable Insights into the Mystery of Happiness

Flow are those inexplicable moments of indescribable happiness that we experience at rare intervals, when we are "surprised by joy." These precious moments seem to be gifts, almost accidental peak experiences in which life seems rich with meaning, joy and wonder. When and why do these magic episodes intrude upon our humdrum existences? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's answer may surprise you: "Contrary to what we usually believe, moments like these, the best moments of our lives, are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times ... The best moments of our lives usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to the limits in a voluntary moment to achieve something difficult and worthwhile. Optimal experience is thus something we make happen ... For each person there are thousands of opportunities, challenges to expand ourselves."

Csikszentmihalyi's theme is happiness. This philosopher-psychologist points out the Aristotelian concept that all other things we seek, riches, fame, power, etc. are valued only because we believe they will make us happy. Based upon decades of research on the mystery of happiness, Csikszentmihalyi defines it as moments of self-forgetfulness when we are totally absorbed in the process of life ... intervals of peak creativity and self-expression. He expands upon the research of Abraham Maslow and agrees that peak experiences are within the reach of us all. The theme of this book is the introduction of techniques to make this glad to be alive feeling occur more often. It may be stated that this book is no self-help step-by-step program, nor could it be. Each of us is plowing new snow, creating a path that no one else has traveled. The guidelines and the principles are here, but the journey into the sublime uncertainty of our destiny is individual and precious. Incredibly insightful

Amazon already did a good job summarizing Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow, so I will instead focus on evaluating its content.

The book is set up in a way where the first few chapters concentrate on defining and analyzing the intricate relationship between human consciousness and happiness. Once this is firmly established, Csikszentmihalyi goes on to introduce the concept of flow, its physiology and its conditions. All subsequent chapters then examine flow in various aspects of our lives and the last chapter focuses on the philosophical implications of the concept and whether it relates to finding "meaning in life".

It has been said in science that any researcher should have the ability to explain their theory clearly and concisely to a layman. I felt that Csikszentmihalyi's style of writing is very true to this statement, as he puts in a particular effort to make his book accessible and very easy to read for just about anyone. I would even say that he is overly simple to a fault - using a philosophically-conversational tone at the expense of a slightly more rigid "literature review" style that predominates more modern pop sci books. Despite this, the author is still capable of conveying a decent amount of science and methodology behind his discovery and analysis of the optimal experience model.

To me, the most powerful chapters were really the first five where, as I discussed earlier, Csikszentmihalyi really puts the meat on the bones of his theory of flow and masterfully connects everything together. Some passages just made so much sense that I had to put the book down and seriously contemplate about what is being said and how it relates to my entire understanding of life. To use the author's own language it put me in a very deep and enjoyable "flow of thought".

The book does have a small blemish in the fact that it gets a bit repetitive when it goes into listing the occurrence of flow in everyday settings. I don't have anything against the discussion of applicability of the theory, it just seems that sections containing very similar messages could have been condensed. Perhaps 240 pages (not including notes and references) is a bit much for this type of format and ideally it should have been closer to 200 pages. However, I want to emphasize that this small fault does not in any way make the book a "drag" and some people may find this "extra" information rather useful.

To conclude, I found Csikszentmihalyi's lifelong research, his findings and the overall message of his work extremely compelling and powerful. The theory of flow does an excellent job describing many aspects of our lives and most importantly sheds light on the conditions of happy and meaningful existence. I would honestly recommend this book to anyone. It is rather short and very readable and guaranteed to make you analyze your life and the life of your friends and family through the lens of the theory of flow.

How far can autotelicity lead us?

The theme of this book argue that we can be fully autotelic to find a satisfaction which will lift us above the sea of random events we cannot control. We are social animals, after all. I would doubt if we can really live against the expectation of social values or poverty to follow the inner call on its own terms. This is an ambitious thesis that the book author cannot finish proving. But I appreciate the beauty of the thesis and the piecemeal anecdotes all over the book.

Delightful but...

I adore this series. There is no delicious pleasure quite like hunkering down with a new Goldy Schulz book. Over the years I have grown extraordinarily fond of Goldy, her husband Tom, son Arch, and best friend Marla. I even love her pets. The setting of Aspen Meadow is very true to Colorado, a state that is dear to my heart. And if course, someone is always cooking something that sounds super yummy.

Having said that, Crunch Time is not the strongest installment in the series. It seems unusually chaotic. Every single social event that Goldy attends, as a caterer or as a guest, is a disaster. It's hard to imagine why anyone would want her at their party. The book seems to me, surprisingly, to go on a bit too long. There are so many suspects, I just wondered why any sane person would live in such a community. Finally, there is a plot twist that I will not reveal, that just feels a bit desperate. I don't believe it would happen, and certainly not the way it rolls out.

I have built up a large store of goodwill for Goldy Schulz and her entourage. I did enjoy this book but wish Diane Mott Davidson had not felt it necessary to throw in everything including the kitchen sink. This is not a series that needs to be read consecutively, you could enjoy any single book on its own merits, but I wouldn't start with this one.

Not good

I like mysteries. I have liked this series. I didn't like this book.

My daughter got me reading these books a long time ago. She bought me some as gifts or sometimes loans me her copy after she is finished. I really like reading these and thought they were fun until now.

Goldy acted like she didn't have any brains and Tom let her get away with it. There were too many story lines and I couldn't keep track of who was who or what was what and didn't really care by the end.

When my daughter loaned me her copy, I asked what she thought and she wouldn't say much. She wanted me to make my own decision. After reading it, I think it may be time for Goldy to hang up her apron.

Interesting: I think it's funny that many of the 5 star reviews showed up here after the author posted on Facebook, asking readers to come to Amazon and give this book 5 star reviews. About 30 of the 5-star reviews (out of the 70 currently posted) were written within 24 hours of the author's request. I don't think that is right.

Out of over 400 reviews this may only be my second 1-star rating, it's that bad

I am a long-time fan of this series having read every single one. I have largely enjoyed the series and looked forward to the next installment to find out what mess Goldy Schultz would get herself into next. An interesting cast of characters, the scenic setting of Colorado, and a caterer that found herself mixed up in murder investigations has provided me with many hours of entertainment. A couple of books back, I was very disappointed in the novel and gave "Sweet Revenge" a 2-star rating. The more recent "Fatally Flaky" got a 4-star from me and a sigh of relief that things were again on the upswing. When I knew "Crunch Time" was being published, I was excited and ready for a fun, light read.

With that background in mind, I must be brutally honest and say this has to be one of the worst books I have ever read (and I read a lot). From the beginning, things start off rocky and it just gets worse as the pages go on. Cozy mysteries always require that the reader suspend belief and turn a blind eye to some things that just don't make sense but this story was just a mess. There is so much wrong with this book that I can't even begin to describe it. It feels like an author with ADHD is writing about a main character with ADHD --- absolutely manic action all the time. A cast of thousands is present that make appearances for a sentence or two, disappear for awhile and then reappear for a sentence or two. The mystery is weak, the characters are weak, and Goldy runs around interrogating everyone she meets by ranting a list of questions at them that make no sense. When I got to approximately page 325 and characters start cussing and prostitution become part of the story line, I really got frustrated. Not only is this book bad, but it is LONG so the reader continues to be subjected to page after page after page of horrid dialogue, a silly mystery, and characters that are downright stupid.

I am not sure I have ever been as blunt in a review before, but this book is beyond bad. I will no longer be following this series after a book that can only be described as one giant mess from beginning to end. Absolutely painful to read - sorry!

A Fascinating and Bizarre Study of the Bohemian Grove.

_The Bohemian Grove and Other Retreats: A Study in Ruling-Class Cohesiveness_, published in 1974 by psychologist and sociologist G. William Domhoff, is a fascinating study of several important retreats frequented by elite businessmen, politicians, scientists, artists, and other members of the upper-class elite. These retreats and in particular the Bohemian Grove retreat are infamous for the bizarre rituals which take place during the time spent there and for the often scandalous behavior of otherwise "conservative" businessmen that allegedly takes place there. It has been further maintained by some that during these retreats important policy decisions are embarked upon and indeed it is this fact that makes such retreats so notorious given the fact that what goes on there is not covered by the press. While the Bohemian Grove has for a motto "Weaving Spiders Come Not Here" and includes a bizarre ritual called the "Cremation of Care" in which a body symbolizing the cares of the world is cremated thus serving to remind the businessmen that they are not to engage in politicking while on the retreat, it has nevertheless been maintained that such retreats offer a socially cementing process whereby the elite become unified as a class. Such cohesiveness may ultimately serve to underpin policy decisions which have effects on the United States (and indeed the rest of the world) that serve the interests of the upper-class elite. Domhoff presents the essential thesis that such retreats (while frivolous affairs on the face of it) actually serve a deeper purpose in unifying the upper-class elite which in turn is reflected in the policy decisions of important political figures. Further, Domhoff will controversially maintain that this upper-class is really a ruling-class against the "pluralist" belief that various groups come together to make policy. However, whatever one thinks of Domhoff's ultimate thesis concerning the ruling-class, there is some fascinating and bizarre information to be found in this book concerning the goings-on at certain upper-class retreats (and in particular at Bohemian Grove). In recent times, certain conspiracy theorists have become fascinated with the events and bizarre rituals that go on at Bohemian Grove and have maintained that such rituals are linked to ancient cults, Satanism, etc. Whatever one thinks of these conspiracy theories however, the rituals and events of Bohemian Grove are certainly very strange indeed and ultimately serve to cement the social structures of the upper-classes.

This book begins with a Preface in which the author discusses the importance of retreats for various groups including for example scouts, ministers, students, athletes, musicians, and even cheerleaders. However, the author notes that retreats become particularly interesting when they are accompanied by bacchanalian rituals, first-class entertainment, illicit sex, and some of the richest and most powerful men in the country. This book will discuss three retreats (which all ultimately stem from the Bohemian Grove) - the Bohemian Grove, the Rancheros Visitadores, and the Roundup Riders. The first chapter of this book is entitled "The Bohemian Grove". The author begins by discussing the ritual of "The Cremation of Care", perhaps the most notorious and bizarre ritual practiced by the Bohemians in which a body representing "care" is cremated. The author then discusses "Jinks High and Jinks Low", mentioning two forms of theater that are performed at the Bohemian Grove - the "High Jinks" involving high theater which is described as very well done and the "Low Jinks" involving a similar theater but with a more bawdy theme of entertainment. Following this, the author discusses "Little Friday Night, Big Saturday Night" and "Lakeside Talks", noting the importance for such informal talks in the shaping of policy by important leaders or for new developments in science, the arts, or industry. The author also discusses "Cliff Dwellers, Moonshiners, and Silverado Squatters" (mentioning the camps that accompany Bohemian Grove each with its own unique flare) and "Other Delights" (mentioning some of the other entertainments of Bohemian Grove). In a particularly disturbing section entitled "Jumping the River", the author discusses the fact that the Bohemian Grove retreat is composed entirely of men, and thus given the fact that many of these elite and powerful men cannot be away from female companionship for any extended period of time there is a prevalence of prostitution in neighboring towns, an event the author refers to as "Jumping the River". The author then discusses "The Sociology of Bohemia", mentioning such things as "Geographical Distribution" (from forty states of the Union), "Social Standing" (almost entirely upper-class or high middle-class), "Corporate Connections", "Political Contributions" (largely contributions made to the Republican Party, though some choose to contribute to both major parties), "Associate Members" (talented Bohemians - i.e. the artists and performers who entertain the businessmen and politicians), "Professional Members" (elite businessmen), "Faculty Members" (university professors and scientists), "The Camps" (discussing the diverse array of camps that have sprung up around the Bohemian Grove retreat each with its own unique flare), and "The Guests" (guests of members). The author also discusses "The Bohemian Club", an elite rich men's club of San Francisco which is responsible for putting on the events of the Bohemian Grove retreat. The author discusses such things as "The Clubhouse", "Directors and Committees", "Becoming a Member" (the extreme difficulty in becoming a member and the elitism of the club as well as the lengthy waiting list for potential members), "Carrying a Spear in Bohemia" (meaning that each member is expected to be a "good Bohemian" and contribute to the events), and "The Spirit of Bohemia" (explaining how the Bohemian Club arose as a club of struggling artists in San Francisco in 1852 but in order to obtain the necessary financial support had to enlist the help of elite businessmen and thus became "corrupted by the bourgeois" as one artist put it and thus avant-garde thinking was eliminated from their ranks). The second chapter of this book is entitled "Other Watering Holes". Here, the author discusses the Rancheros Visitadores started by John J. Mitchell (a member of the Bohemian Club) and centered around horses, also involving quite a bit of tomfoolery by members. The author also discusses "Roundup Riders of the Rockies", a similar elite club to the Rancheros though of lesser and more local importance. The third chapter of this book is entitled "Do Bohemians, Rancheros, and Roundup Riders Rule America?" Here, the author outlines his theory as to why he believes the upper-class elite who engage in such retreats in fact constitute a ruling class. The author explains that not only do such men belong to organizations such as the Council on Foreign Relations, the Committee for Economic Development, and other policy-planning organizations, but that they are also Bohemians, Rancheros, and Roundup Riders. Thus, the author maintains that these retreats serve to achieve upper-class cohesiveness. The author discusses such things as "What Is a Social Class?" (considering various definitions including those of Marx and Weber), "Is There a National Upper Class?", "Policy Consensus within the Upper Class" (mentioning such groups as "The Business Council"), and finally offers a "Final Analysis" of the upper-class maintaining against the claims of pluralists that the upper-class constitutes a ruling-class. This chapter ends with a "Conclusion" in which the author maintains that his thesis is well-founded despite the claims of pluralists. The book ends with an "Appendix of Heavies" listing the prominent men who are involved in such elite retreats and their important positions in both business and government.

This book offers a fascinating and disturbing glimpse into the world of the business and political elite. The events that take place at the Bohemian Grove retreat are certainly bizarre and prompt the question as to why a group of the world's most powerful and richest men should engage in such antics. Further, as the author maintains such retreats serve as social cement to unify the upper-class in America. While this book is dated, in recent times the events at Bohemian Grove have been brought to light yet again by various conspiracy researchers who maintain that there is an important story to be told here.

When will the media stop ignoring this story?

The Bohemian Club, a very elite club made up almost entirely, (the exception being Colin Powell) of rich, white, men who gather together in Northern California in late July. Anyone that has looked into this Club knows how fascinating the information is on this story and how elusive it is to try to get information about it. Let me just say how elite and how rich the members are that get into this club, our President, George W. Bush, his father, every Republican President since Hoover, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Powell, Gingrich, Andrew Card, Karl Rove, Walter Cronkite, many, many CEO's of numerous corporations, (I'm still trying to find out if any of Enron's people were Bohemian Club members)and more rich, white elite men.
The interesting aspect of all this is what exactly goes on there and how come most Americans have no idea about this place when you would think the media would be all over it. There is high level security surrounding the club and it is located in a remote place in Northern California. There are many, many rumors of strange activities there but some things are almost beyond doubt: Bohemians get drunk, it is comparable to a college fraternity, there is some gay activity by at least SOME of the members, some drug use, (which almost points to a huge hypocrisy since most of these "conservative, religous, family values" types have spoken out publically against gay rights, and have spent billions on a so called drug war)
Almost beyond doubt is the bizarre Pagan relationship with the Bohemian Club. First off, it is in midsummer, which is considered a very important time in the Pagan calendar, there is a huge owl statue that has been photographed there, there are widespread rumors of some sort of sacrifice being made there ALTHOUGH the Bohemians state that it is not a live human, but just a dummy. I don't want to get into that argument, BUT my question is WHY HAVE SOME SORT OF HUMAN SACRIFICE THERE ANYWAY? Fake or real? How bizarre and strange is that?
There is a Bohemian Action Network there that makes regular protests against the Bohemian Club and until recently feminists have made protests there since no women were allowed to become members or work there, until recently. The Network's argument against the Club is not about the bizarre rumors but sticks to the more solid and mainstream argument that these elite and powerful people make speeches, Kissinger made one recently,and it is widely reported that in 68, Nixon convinced Reagan to stay out of the Republican primaries, and the 92, a Gulf War General told the Bohemians the actual number of Iraqi deaths but warned against telling the masses, (the other 95%), because we would not be able to handle it. That is a very common attitude at the elitist Club, that information and power should and ought to be put into the hands of the few since grassroots democracy would be dangerous, how dare the masses feel that they should rule.
Anyway, the Action Network argues that important policy speeches made in the Grove should not be private for the ears of the 2000 or so rich, white elitist men that are at the Club, but should be made public for all of us to hear. A very convincing argument that is hard seriously debate. But of course that is not likely to happen and the aspect of the Club most people will be interested in is what exactly goes on there, and how strange and bizarre are the practices there.
There, in a nutshell, is the Bohemian Club. The question is WHY isn't this unbelievably fascinating story being reported in the media. For those that may find this hard to believe at all, go to MSNBC webpage and search for Bohemian Club and you will find several articles on it. The Sacramento Bee and San Francisco Chronicle have also written articles about it. On the FAIR.ORG webpage, you will find an article written by respected journalist , Jeff Cohen, (One of the guys on FNC's "Fox News watch, he's the REALLY liberal and left wing one! Ain't he great?) He writes how two articles from People and TIME magazine were trashed by the editory at the last minute for unknown and mysterious reasons, well probably not so mysterious if one thinks long enough. Finally there is Alex Jones, and infowars.com, he's the man who claims, and I believe, snuck into the Bohemian Grove, and videotaped much of the activities there, of course hidden and from a distance, it appears legit to me and is truly a bizarre sight as men with hoods and torches worship the huge owl statue. If seeing that doesn't get you interested in the Club, Nothing will.
I hope this was not a waste of time and people will put want to find out more about this place and why it isn't being covered by the media and what exactly these priveleged, elitist hypocrites are doing and saying there.

Not as sensationalistic as the Jones Documentary

Bohemian Grove is best known because of Alex Jones sneaking in and filming their Cremation of Care "ritual". Jones has done some very good documentaries but that one was a bit hokey. I think he read too much into it as well as making some false claims. Like claiming the big wooden Owl on the grounds was suppossed to be a totem of the demon Molloch. Molloch was a bull, not an owl!

The Cremation of Care seems more like a play than any kind of "Satanic" ritual. This book, which came out way back when Nixon was President doesn't read so much into it as Jones did. He does go into how into putting on plays these elites are. Hey maybe these world elites in their heart of hearts are nothing but a bunch of frustrated drama club fruits. Domhoff also writes about another elite club for world elites where their big thing was enacting their cowboy fantasies. Not every member was down for the program apparently. Tapes came out a few years back of Richard Nixon, who was a member of the Bohemian Grove saying, "It is the most faggy goddamned thing you could ever imagine". Ha ha!

Overall this book really doesn't offer much except a description of the Cremation of Care "ritual", descriptions of the goings on at the grove, talk of a couple of other retreats/clubs and a huge member list which includes Presidents, Senators, heads of corporations, bankers and other super wealthy types. It is outdated considering it was published in the 1970s but it isn't as sensationalistic as the Jones documentary.

If you do not know anything on feudalism,I highly recommend you this book. And if you are a student in medieval hisory this book is really worth reading. The subject is fully treated and it is quite easy to read. This is a book you can allways consult if you work on feudalism.

This book's 350 pages contain 67 individual stories. The authorship of these stories is shared among 12 individuals. As can be expected in a book like this, some stories are more interesting than others, depending on the reader's preferences for either the subject matter or a given author's writing style. Nevertheless, all of these stories have varying degrees of tongue-in-cheek-ness, which makes for very pleasant light reading. The writing style is generally quite engaging, often humorous and accessible to a wide readership.

In a book with such a wide-ranging scope, errors may creep in which, depending on the reader's knowledge base, may be easily missed. For me, two errors stand out. They are both in the chapter entitled "Overcooking with Atoms". On page 47 can be found the statement: "sodium reactors never deplete their fuel supply, so the SRE could ... provide uninterrupted power without any need for additional uranium". This statement is misleading since it implies that the sodium reactor is a perpetual motion machine, i.e., it will run forever without any new fuel - like an automobile that will run forever on a single gas tank. This is obviously wrong; better wording should have been chosen. The other error pertains to the use of an incorrect term: on page 49, the term "radio nucleotides" is used when the correct term is "radionuclides".

Aside from these minor quibbles, this is a book that can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone.

This book looked good on paper

I'm sure the idea for this book looked good on paper, but in reality, it's just not that good. The writing is sloppy, there are lots of factual errors, (The Department of Energy was created in 1977, not the 1940's)and too much personal opinion of the writers (of whom, there are also too many). Each article is apparently designed to last about as long as the average visit to the bathroom.

I keep my copy in the car and take it in while waiting for doctors appointments. This is not the kind of book one bothers to read from start to finish.

This book reads like a compilation of the final project of a community college creative writing class, or maybe intro to Journalism.

Errors and opinions distract

This book has two troublesome patterns that distract from the remaining content: errors and opinions.

The more noticeable of the two are factual errors that seem to be present in a noticeable percentage of stories. The errors are sometimes insignificant, but can also go to the core of the topic.

While not as frequent as factual errors, there are many stories in which the viewpoint and fundamental assumptions of the writer must be shared by the reader. Lacking such common ground the reader is left wondering why the story was included in a book titled "it looked good on paper".

I don't recommend this book for someone who lacks familiarity in the areas discussed, as otherwise it has a high likelihood of leaving the reader with an inaccurate impression of past events.

Instruction for the Would-be Historian...

"The Historian as Detective: Essays on Evidence" is a superb collection of cautionary tales on the difficulty of being an effective historian. Thanks to Robin Winks' superb editing, the reader, whether of popular history or of the more rigorous academic variety, is presented with summaries of investigations into various historical matters and the difficulties of determining which historical raw materials may be real, which may be false, what cannot be known, and not least, what may be probative in any given line of historical inquiry.

The essays themselves cover a huge amount of ground, from the days of Rome to the John F. Kennedy assassination, and many interesting topics in-between. Some examine the use of documents, others the use of testimony by eyewitnesses, and still others the providence of physical items of history and their interpretation. In each case, the would-be historian may learn something about the limits of the craft. Cases concerning false documents that fooled even experienced historians are especially illuminating.

"The Historian as Detective" is very highly recommended to both the popular reader of history and the would-be historian. This volume is out of print but well-worth while to track down from used book dealers.

"Office Space" of the Restaurant world

As I read "Waiter Rant", I couldn't help but think that this truly was a bit like the cult film "Office Space", but for the restaurant world. Parts of the book were just flat out funny, in that kind of way that Office Space is funny to those of us who work in the corporate world.

I found I liked "the waiter" from the beginning. He is cynical, he is funny, he is smart, witty and above all not going to take a lot of "#%*%" from you if you start acting like a moron at the establishment he works at.

In the book you get the real picture of what goes in the back, the tyrannical bosses, the mal-adjusted waitstaff, the psycho customers, the good, the bad and the ugly. There are stories of meat sent back one too many times, a roaming squirrel in the dining room, and the case of the coffee that just wasn't hot enough (until the waiter fixes that for good). As he says in the book "Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Waiter". Rule 1: Always be nice to the waitstaff.

I must admit, that I had never read the waiter's prize winning blog before, so I was completely new to his writing, but hope that he keeps up the writing and entertaining us for years to come, in whatever direction his life takes him.

Oh, and do NOT miss the 40 tips on how to be a good customer, noted in the back of the book. Not only are these written with humor, but are truly those things that many of us fellow diners wish that you would stop (ahem, hel-lo cell phone users.....we are trying to have a romantic dinner here and do not really need to know about your mother's kidney stones).

Great Job "Waiter", I would give you a 25% tip for this one, and a smiley on the check to boot :)

So, a priest walks into a restaurant...

I was at a nice restaurant with my now fiance. A man walked in with a small group and proceeded to raise a ruckus. He didn't like the table they assigned. He didn't like the next table. He got angry and firm, finally taking a table near the back despite the protest of the staff. Quite rude and quite thinking he was the only one in the restaurant.

When he sat down his mother, who likely taught him such behavior, said, "First you give them a chance to do it right, then you help them do it right."

We laughed out loud. Their assumption of what they were owed did not disguise the fact they were merely boors.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with such people every day.

But waiters and waitresses do.

The author of this book started out thinking he would like to help people as a priest. He began to study for the priesthood but left when the corruption and the scandals started getting too much. Had a degree in psychology and tried his hand in the mental health care business. Also corrupt and scandal-ridden. Stayed honest, got fired.

Wandered around a little. His brother got him a job in a restaurant. Also corrupt and scandal-ridden, but at least there are no illusions. Stays a waiter. Moves to a nicer place. Begins to write about his experiences on a blog. Then in this book.

That's the background.

The book is a memoir of sorts, but not a typical kind. It's anonymous. It also dwells on a particular setting and makes particular points along the way. It's a memoir with a mission, and this is to illuminate the often hidden world of restaurants. The Waiter, as he is known, touches on important concepts such as management, illegal immigration, rude customers, good and bad service, holidays, waiter revenge, hygiene, and assorted other topics. Each chapter has a particular theme.

Yet, these themes aren't at all obvious at first. The writing is that good. The Waiter is brilliant at showing not telling, that tricky art that foils lesser writers. We are given a story, not a mere rant. He is descriptive, insightful, observing, and honest. The themes are held within an overall story that is his life, a life that has many twists and turns and disappointments.

These disappointments and disillusionment become our boon, however. Because of his background, and his great capability, we are given a wonderful view into an often disguised world. The Waiter brings to bear not only his expertise at his profession, but also psychological and spiritual insights, making this book a surprising deep read. But never overbearing and certainly never self-righteous. The honesty sometimes ventures into the vulgar, but always understandably so. It's not only the story of a man trying to find his way and providing great commentary as he goes. It's also a manual of restaurant etiquette and personalities, becoming a mirror to our often unconsidered actions.

This really is a great book, amazing insight and amazing writing throughout. Profound and readable, all while dwelling on often mundane issues. I'm going to be recommending this to most everyone I know.

Now, I sort of wish he went back into the priesthood, or maybe tried out being a Protestant pastor. I can only imagine how good he would do looking at the convoluted world of church life. But, I suspect his mission is greater than that.

He's a waiter. He's really a writer. And this book should be bought. Brilliant book. Ten stars if I could.

I like to think of myself as the 20% tipper...

I like to eat, dabble in cooking, read the usual food blogs, but hitherto reading the WR, I must confess that I have never heard of the WaiterRant blog or the mysterious Waiter. (One does however, learn the Waiter's first name by the end of the book. And more importantly, as I learned on wikipedia, the Waiter will shed his anonymity at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 29th at Borders Books inside the Time Warner Building in Manhattan.)

The Waiter details his beginnings at Amici's, where we meet the first of several psychopathic and dysfunctional managers, fellow waiters, and restaurant owners. He survives the baptism, and soldiers on as a manager at The Bistro for the next six odd years. He deftly handles the crucible that is The Bistro throughout a variety of situations; supervising the infamous Russell Crowe visit, deflecting Fluvio's rants and video camera spying, and handling the day to day obnoxious customers. Some of the chapters may have come from his blog postings, but perhaps the more faithful fans can tell me which portions were newly added.

After finishing the book, his rants inspired me to a bit of introspection regarding how to better treat the wait staff. I've asked for a different table other than my assigned table before. It's amazing what waiters have to put up with, and you will definitely appreciate them more after a good reading. Want suggestions on how to tip better? Then check out Chapter 9, ppg. 105-118. The book also comes with appendices on how to be a better customer (when ordering wine, don't sniff the cork), how to tell you're at a bad restaurant (just look at the employees' bathroom), and tips for waiters. And guys, if you're taking a girl out on a date, the Waiter suggests tipping at least 20%, because she will know.

My one complaint against the Waiter? 30 Minute Meals is his favorite show on FoodTV.
