Mardy's Done It Again

I never met a Mardy Grothe book I didn't like. And "I Never Metaphor I Didn't Like" is certainly no exception. In his Introduction, the author describes himself as "a serious quotation collector," and in this newest of his four books, containing nearly 2,000 analogies, metaphors and similes, he provides indisputable evidence of that fact. He has indeed delivered what he promises in the book's subtitle: "A Comprehensive Compilation of History's Greatest Analogies, Metaphors, and Similes."

However, "I Never Metaphor I Didn't Like" is far more than simply a collection of quotations. In his own highly readable, entertaining and informative style, the author tells often fascinating stories behind many of the entries.

I can't imagine any word lover not wanting this delightful volume in his or her library. But be advised! This is not a book to be devoured in one, two or even in a dozen readings. In what he calls his attempt "to compile some of history's greatest word paintings," Mardy Grothe has succeeded beautifully. To fully admire and appreciate these "paintings" will take time, but it will indeed be time very well spent.

With "i never metaphor i didn't like" [sic] Dr. Mardy Grothe once again succeeds in deriving both amusement and plenty of food-for-thought from the nuances of figures of speech-this time from metaphor, simile, and analogy. This is another of his books worthy of multiple browsings for examples of linguistic wit, wisdom, pathos, and bathos thoughtfully arranged by subject. Dr. Grothe intersperses the quotations with background information, anecdotes, and reference linkages that enhance the reader's enjoyment and make the book more than just a list of quotations. I've thoroughly perused all of his figure-of-speech books, and I'm sure this one will wind up as well thumbed as his others on my shelf.

His introduction provides a quick brush-up on the characteristics of analogies, metaphors, and similes that is bright and readable without being tedious. And his index by author will be appreciated by anyone seeking specific who-said-whats that are scattered among various topics.

Mardy triumphs again in showing the feedback loop by which our language influences our thoughts and our thoughts influence our language.

An ounce of Metaphor is worth a Pound of plodding Prose

There are certain kinds of books that are simply fun. They do not have any great thesis or argument. They offer the reader a selection of very varied fare and suggest sampling it.
So this collection of Metaphors, Similes, and Analogies. Some will make you smile, some will make you think again.Some you will have to squint a bit to puzzle out.
But it will all be enjoyment.
For me a book like this is of special value. As a writer I am always studying ( which does not mean- learning) how other writers did truly good things. This book is rich in examples. As Henny Youngman might have said " One man's metaphor is another man's corned-beef sandwich."

About the Author

Keith Glass has coached basketball at the high school and college levels (he was an assistant coach at UCLA), and has been a longtime agent for NBA players. He lives in Rumson, New Jersey, with his wife, Aylin Guney Glass, who played professional basketball in Turkey. He is the father of five children—Sami, Tyler, Alex, Maggie, and Lucas.

So Good !

As a lifelong basketball fan, I was really pleased to read Keith Glass's view of today's NBA. This is a thoughtful, informative and personal look at the treatment and mistreatment of young athletes and their relationships with the public and their agents. I particularly enjoyed reading Mr. Glass's first hand experiences with professional basketball players and his telling of stories with humor and insight. Glass is direct, courageous and clearly unafraid to critique the organization that he has worked with for years. I found the chapter on his "Greek" player revealing and interesting; it showed how the draft operated, especially in connection with young, talented European players and how commitments were given and then ignored. Mr. Glass's chapter about Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was extremely informative and portrayed a different point of view from what I had read in the media. I appreciated Mr. Glass's insight (although his disagreement) with Rauf's position on the National anthem, and the problem of his relationship with Rauf because Glass was Jewish and Rauf a Muslim. I was touched by the airline tickets/ auction story, which presented a different image of Rauf and suggested that he could step up for the seemingly small and personal things that mattered. If you grew up with basketball as part of your life or are interested in today's world of the professional athlete, I recommend this book. You couldn't find a better read.

NBA ON FULL DISPLAY: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE GREEDY!!

Four FASCINATING Stars!! Keith Glass portrays the NBA as a multi-million dollar business like no other in the world. In "Taking Shots" we get a real insider's view of the NBA, the players, coaches, and the entire system. He may well have burned a few bridges in the process of writing this book, such is the level of detail and the abundance of inside stories. Although not exhaustive, this book is interesting and informative as it is.

We also get some information on John Wooden, the rise of Larry Brown and his current fate (on which the book ends) and much on Mr Glass, his family and the athletes he represents. Keith Glass' unfavorable comparison of NBA basketball with the game that Dr Naismith invented was an easy layup, the author sees that the game "has become a selfish, tedious, and colossal bore" at times. As such, it cycles between truly exciting games and 'going through the motions' games, between one-on-one post ups on the left and on the right sometimes dominating the action and true team play exhibited by some of the teams.

The litmus test for any insider NBA book is Latrell Sprewell's career and antics and here Mr Glass does not fail, giving the lowdown on what happened before, during, and after the 'choking incident'. Other stories recount players who, unbelievably, refused trades and others who refused to go into the game, and one injured player who, as a true sportsman, retired rather than just play for the money. There are many cases of head coaches and officials being sacrificed for the sake of the team by management, over and over. The anthem "If you can play, you get paid" regardless of your many personal troubles, reverberates across the landscape of this book and the NBA. Maybe I shouldn't have said "greedy" in the review title, maybe they're worth every penny of what they make in their short, frantic careers. Definitely Recommended! Four REVEALING Stars!!

A Heart-felt Examination of What the NBA Has Become

Keith Glass tells a great tale, and his many years of experience representing NBA players has given him many to tell. Glass' book is a great insight into the other side of the NBA that the general public would otherwise have no access to. But one of the greatest elements of this book is Glass' true passion for the sport, and for the part he has played in it.

The book looks at Glass' upbringing, with basketball in his life from a very young age. Glass discusses how Larry Brown ended up living with his family, how Glass saw the evolution of basketball, and how he became a coach at UCLA. There's a very nostalgic and homely feel to these earlier chapters, and they definitely show a man who really loves the game and loves the relationships he has been able to establish through it.

The book then looks at Glass' adventures in representing top level NBA stars and how he came into this career. The greatest stories in here are the tale of Mahamoud Abdul-Rauf, the making of Scott Skiles (current head coach of the Chicago Bulls) and the sad story of Thomas Hamilton. It really is the stories like Hamilton's, a seven-foot-four giant with exquisite skills who could never get his NBA career started due to personal problems, that make this book. The power this story has is it makes you look at how some people can throw their God-given talent away, which gives you perspective to appreciate what you have in your life.

The latter chapters lack the same level of interest, as Glass discusses the various ways he NBA could improve the league and take it back to it's roots more, and further away from the greed-driven monster it has become. Glass makes some great points, but they could have been better illustrated through his stories, rather than telling the reader, point-blank. His various tales deliver this message through subtlety and through reading between the lines of what's going on, so to have this opinion forced onto the reader in the end weakened the overall tone of the writing a bit.

It also plays down some of Glass' other failings, in that he makes little to no mention of his previous marriages and doesn't discuss things he has done that he has regretted. It seems, at times, that Glass is a little too ethical in a world of no ethics, and to survive in this arena, Glass says himself, you can't always hold to your morals. There would appear to be a level of censorship and restraint at times. The book could have had more effect if there were no barriers, no holds barred.

There are also two times that Glass refers to the story of Lloyd Daniels, and says that he would need an entire book of it's own to tell Daniels' story. Lloyd Daniels was shot three times in the late eighties and still, to this day, has a bullet lodged in his right shoulder. He never played in college, yet went on to play for five NBA teams. Now that's a story I want to hear. Daniels' story should have made the book, even in brief form.

At the end of the book you get the sense that this is the story Keith Glass wanted to tell in exactly the way he wanted to tell it, which is not so bad, but it felt like it could have explored so much more about the dark side of the glamourous life of pro-ballers. As it stands, it's an interesting read, great at times, but overall more focussed on presenting a portrait of a man who loves the game and who holds a special place in his heart for 'his' players. Again, this is not so bad, but a but more controversy and a couple more first-hand accounts of back-room dealings would have made this a more important and compulsive book.

Awww! Very sweet read! You will love the HEA!

This is the second book of the series and we get a taste of all the characters from the first book. I really enjoyed the first book in the Scoundrels of St James series, but I loved this one even more! I have the whole series so I can't wait to dive into the next one!

Gets better as it goes...

This was an average read for me because it took a while to endear myself to the hero and heroine (especially the heroine), and I couldn't really feel their connection until the latter part of the book. However, the characters and the story improved as it progressed.

Jack Dodger, the hero, is rough and hardened from a dark and abusive childhood. He unexpectedly and inexplicably finds himself guardian to a little boy who is heir to a Dukedom. The boy's mother, Olivia, is resistant to this "scoundrel" Dodger having any part in the rearing of her child. She often calls him a devil and he admits he's in hell. She is the stiff backed type of heroine who frequently judges others based on their perceived sins. While never boring, I found the book quite predictable. It gets better as it goes though and I found myself with so much sympathy and admiration for the hero in the end. This is when the love between the H/H finally is seen and is believable. It just takes a while to get there.

The subject matter is heavy at times(childhood sexual abuse) and the friendship between Feagan's gang is touching. The relationship between the boy and Dodger is moving as well. I will read the rest in this series and highly recommend the first book in it In Bed With the Devil (Avon Romantic Treasure). If you loved the first book and want to continue reading the series, then I recommend you go ahead and read this one.

Devastating Stuff

This is the kind of book that is either going to inspire or infuriate you, but it should provoke valuable discussion and thought in either case. Johnson's thesis is quite simple: the revolutionary thinkers whose ideas have shaped intellectual history over the past 250 years were, for the most part, lousy human beings. These were not not common or garden variety jerks but personalities whose flaws were so manifest that they must call into question the value of the theories they generated.

This is an interesting proposition. Does it matter that Peter Sellers, the world's greatest comedic actor, was a vile neurotic, that Marilyn Monroe was a goddess on screen but a drug-addled manipulator in everyday life, that Winston Churchill, who saved civilization during World War II, was also an alcoholic egomaniac? Probably not. But Johnson asks a deeper question: if a thinker cannot live out his own principles, can these ideas have any real merit? His book convinces us that there is a real connection between the rancid lives lived by intellectuals and the disasters their ideas produced.

For example, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is adored by educational theorists and his ideas are entrenched in the curricula of teachers' colleges, despite the fact that he serially abandoned every one of his children. Karl Marx was bourgeois to the core and seems to have exploited the only working-class woman he ever knew: paying her starvation wages, impregnating her and forcing her to abandon their child. Johnson lacerates the behaviour of these prominent figures but more importantly shows how their shabby personal values foreshadow the social harm their works engendered.

Bombastic, but the core message resonates

Unfortunately, this book suffers from the sacred cow syndrome. Johnson discredits so many of the secular world's heroes, that many will not allow his voice to come through the din of their ad hominem accusations. It really is a shame because they cry foul without looking at the big picture.

At first glance, this work appears to be using an Ad Hominem attack against mostly secular thinkers. But at its core, it has a much more profound message. These 'attacks' are actually case studies on the validity of the ideas these intellectuals are passing on to our society.

His point is this: If these intellectuals' ideas are going to affect the quality of our lives, we must inspect the quality of these intellectuals' lives. This is not ad hominem, it is looking for the proof in the pudding. If the thinkers are putting forth ideas on the mating habits of the Blue Whale, then looking at their personal life is indeed ad hominem. But if our moral framework is being influenced by a great thinker, then it is perfectly acceptable to look at his or her morality.

I will say that Johnson is very caustic in his critiques (and hilarious at points), but I believe if you read critiques of non-secular moral advocates who were caught with inconsistencies between their private and public lives, the critiques are at least as biting.

Finally, I don't believe most skeptics have read the whole book. The last line of the book is actually where the most clarity is shared.

"Above all, we must at all times remember what intellectuals habitually forget: that people matter more than concepts and must come first. The worst of all despotisms is the heartless tyranny of ideas."

In my podcast, Christian With A Brain, this book was a tremendous resource when I discussed the Limits of Logic. When our leaders experiment with the governing of people, when they construct plans for societal design, it would be wise to first place an ear upon the chest of humanity, hear their heartbeat, feel their pain, look into thier eyes, then begin, and end - with them.

Intelligent but not Wise

In his Republic, Plato had Socrates arguing that in order to create an ideal city-state of perfect justice either philosophers must be kings or kings must become philosophers. In other words, the only rulers of a truly just state must be philosopher-kings. Only the philosopher has the inner vision required to rule justly.

The example of history seems to have shown that rule by philosopher-kings is more likely to be the worst and most tyrannical form of government. There have been few, if any, actual kings who have been philosophers or philosophers who have been kings, to be sure, but governments ruled by an inner vision of perfect justice have proved to be devastating in terms of human lives and freedom. The history of the twentieth century ought to have proved that beyond any doubt.

Despite the example of history and common sense, there remains a class of individuals who believe that they and they alone, possess the inner vision needed to reform or remake society into a utopia of perfect justice. These individuals have seldom possessed political power, but through their writings and thoughts have had an enormous influence on the society around them. These individuals are often referred to as intellectuals.

Paul Johnson profiles a few of these overly influential people in his book Intellectuals. As Johnson notes at the beginning, there have always been people who have held themselves as having a special capacity to determine proper behavior and beliefs and to use this capacity to enlighten their neighbors. These intellectuals, generally priests or teachers were limited by tradition or official doctrine. A preacher could try to create heaven on Earth, but his view of Heaven was determined by scripture or tradition. Beginning in the eighteenth century, the influence of religion in the West declined, and the cleric was gradually replaced by the secular intellectual.

These secular intellectuals were quite different from their predecessors. Rather than upholding traditional rules and authority, these new intellectuals sought to tear down the old to make way for a new world based upon their inner visions of justice and reason. It is these people that Johnson writes about. He begins with Jean-Jacques Rousseau and continues with such diverse individuals as Percy Byshe Shelley, Karl Marx, Leo Tolstoy, Bertrand Russell, Jean-Paul Sartre, and others. These individuals have been very different in their ideas and lives, yet there are some striking similarities, as Johnson notes. These intellectuals all believed that they should not be bound by the same rules as others. Instead, they needed complete freedom from mundane cares to work out their ideas. They professed to be great lovers of humanity, yet didn’t seem to like the people around them very much, often using their associates as tools.

Some might object that Paul Johnson spends too much time on his subjects’ scandalous private lives. One might argue that a thinker ought to be judged by the quality of his ideas rather than the sordidness of his private life. To a great extent, this is true, yet a person’s private and public life cannot really be separated that easily. The private lives of these intellectuals were either a reflection of their philosophy, in which case that life shows the real-life effects of that philosophy, or they were unable to live up to the ideals of their philosophy, which implies that perhaps no human being could live up to such ideals.

Most of the people profiled by Johnson might be considered somewhat “left wing” in their politics. This might be because of Paul Johnson’s own political prejudices, but I think that it is also likely that the sort of person who wishes to remake civilization according to his own wishes is far more likely to be drawn to progressive politics. A conservative intellectual, would perhaps, be more inclined to defend and preserve traditional institutions rather than tear them down to be remade. One exception to this rule might be the example of Ayn Rand. She was not a defender of tradition despite her defense of capitalism and she sought, through her Objectivist philosophy, to undo the past two-thousand years of “altruist” Judeo-Christian ethics, so perhaps she fits the pattern of the intellectuals better than it might appear at first glance. It is a pity that Paul Johnson did not include her with the intellectuals since the unrealism of some aspects of her philosophy and her wretched treatment of most of her associated made her a better example than some of the people he did include.

I have no complaints about Intellectuals, however. It is a book that anyone who believes that the right sort of ideas or the right sort of people could usher in a perfect world would do well to read this book.

The devilishly handsome, notoriously roguish Colin Eversea has been wrongly convicted for murder following the sudden disappearance of the only witness to the crime; he is about to be hanged when he is boldly rescued from the gallows by a mysterious woman, Madeleine Greenway. Madeleine, who is a mercenary with a skill for orchestrating difficult and dangerous tasks, tells Colin that she has been hired to save him but not to release him; unfortunately, she is not sure who employed her. When someone tries to kill Madeleine before she can collect her fee, she joins forces with Colin in an effort to discover who has engineered Colin's conviction and financed his subsequent escape, and who may be responsible for the attempt on her own life. Colin is desperate to clear his name and halt the marriage of his childhood sweetheart to his older brother, an event which is scheduled only one week hence. Madeleine wants to collect her money and use it to start a new life in America. But as the two travel through London and the surrounding countryside searching for answers, they find it increasingly difficult to deny either their increasing fascination with each other or their escalating mutual attraction.

Both Colin and Madeleine are wonderful, fully realized characters. One of Julie Anne Long's greatest talents is her ability to breathe new life into tired romance cliches, and in TPOP she works her magic on the handsome, rakish, devil-may-care romantic hero and creates Colin Eversea, a very memorable charmer. Colin's dangerous charm and irresistible sex appeal positively zing off the pages of the book; but it is his little insecurities that he hides behind his facile quips, his conflicted feelings regarding his brother, and his simmering rage about the injustice of his recent fate that make him come fully alive. Madeleine is a refreshingly unusual romance heroine--mature, pragmatic, efficient and enigmatic. Her past history and her tight control over her emotions are very slowly peeled away from her by Colin during their journey. They are a delightful couple and the sexual tension between them is allowed to build slowly to a wonderful peak, without a lot of gratitious mental lusting.

As always, Long's prose is a delight to read and her dialogue full of wit and flair. She is really one of the most talented writers in the genre at this point, IMHO.

Highly recommended for historical romance lovers who enjoy character-driven romance, particularly those who love strong, unusual heroines.

Wonderfully creative heroine!!!

I don't often label a book a keeper - but I will keep this one and look for more from this author. I really like the heroine - Madeleine Greenway - she's totally unique, with an interesting past, a very different profession, and a maturity that is rare in historical romances. Ms Long has created an endearing hero in Colin Eversea, and it's fun to see him struggle with the reality of Madeleine and his attraction to her. I was swept along with them on their crazy race for answers to the mystery surrounding Colin. Highly recommended!

Perils

In PERILS OF PLEASURE, Colin Eversea is about to be hung for murder but is rescued by mercenary Madeleine Greenway. Her assignment is to kidnap Colin and prevent his hanging. On her way to return him and collect her pay, she learns that her employer has changed his mind and now wants Madeleine dead.

When I heard the plot for this book, I knew I had to read it. My love of historicals aside, it sounded like a fast read with all key elements packaged in. I read the first few pages and relaxed into the assurance that this author and I had become friends.

Miss Long was a very nice writing style that is easy and enjoyable to read. Once you adjust to the head-hopping and point of view slips, there isn't anything jarring and no 'why am I being punished' moments. She tells the story seamlessly from start to finish.

At the halfway point, something bothered me. I was not feeling a connection to the characters. I stopped reading to understand why I didn't care about Colin and "Mad". I certainly wanted to, I liked this author's style. What I came up with is this: a good part of the book is told from the male mc's point of view. This is not necessarily a bad thing. However, Colin didn't seem to have much depth. He is engaged to a childhood sweetheart, but at the same time is a major player who is very hormonally driven. This characteristic is not endearing to me. We weren't in Mad's point of view deep enough to really know her. Realizing what I was facing, I continued, but the end of the book felt contrived and disappointing.

Overall, I'm torn on my feelings for this book. Would I read this author again? Absolutely. There is more than enough of what Miss Long does well that would make me read her other works.

Interesting, but not great

Like another review here, I was disappointed to find that topics listed on the back (Alexander the Great and Chiang Kai-Shek) were not included in the book. The other essays, however were for the most part, good. At times it dragged on, and having an entire section on Napoleon, but only one essay for each theatre of the Second World War seemed a little disproportionate. Other than that, it was an interesting book.

Overall interesting, but feels lacking and misleads the reader

This is my first time writing a review on Amazon, and what motivated me to do this was actually a part of the blurb on the back cover that had misled me and annoyed me as a result. However, I have no intention of giving this a bad review just for misleading advertising. As such, I can guarantee that this review is fair to the best of my abilities and not the result of any harsh feelings toward the editors or the people who wrote the back blurb and other such things.

What drew me to this book are my interest in and my background as a history student. Military history has been something that I have always found fascinating. Unfortunately, there are few courses that cover solely military history (though I admit that such a course would be perhaps too narrow in its focus to make it interesting for an entire semester or year, but I digress), and of course, as the popular saying goes, history is "written by the victors", and the victors enjoy talking about how they won far more than about how the other guy lost through stupidity--though the latter is mentioned, but not in nearly as great detail, and it just makes the victory over the enemy a whole lot less impressive from that perspective anyway. So seeing this, I purchased it due to its price and what I expected to be a unique perspective. I was both pleased and disappointed with what I got.

The book started with a bang with the two short essays on the Korean War, which I found to be among the more interesting chapters. In addition to being highly effective in hooking the reader in, in light of recent events on the Korean Peninsula, it also felt quite fitting to be those reading now. Another aspects of the book that I enjoyed were the chapters dedicated to some of the lesser-known conflicts in the second section "Little Wars, Big Mistakes," which were interesting and provided some good information for wars that I am not too familiar with, with enough background that anyone interested could then go on and read more in-depth into them without feeling too lost or intimidated.

With that said, I do have some gripes with the book that kept me from giving this a higher rating. First, a minor problem is with the organisation. The book opens with the chapters on the Korean conflict (1950-53). As mentioned above, it was an effective hook. What I was not as keen on, however, is that those two chapters comprised the first large section "Modern Mistakes", which contained only four chapters that focused on three different conflicts (due to the first two being about the Korean War), while as I got further along into the book, there was another section titled "Losing Big", and several of the chapters in either section could have fit into one or the other. Perhaps this is my own personality (I can be very strict with organisation in my daily life) and history student preferences coming into play, and I am sure the editor had his reasons to do things the way he did, but I felt that such organisation was a tad bit arbitrary and confusing. This is especially noticeable in "Losing Big", which covers events from the 16th century ago until the 1990-91 Gulf War and has a huge chunk missing between World War II and the Gulf War. This gap is due to several conflicts in between being placed in the "Modern Mistakes" section at the beginning of the book. Don't get me wrong, I liked that the conflicts were grouped thematically as opposed to chronologically; such a layout fit the book better overall. Still, it just did not really make sense to me. Even by making connections between the mistakes of the past and the present, I still get the feeling that the European wars of the late 19th century and the World Wars of the 20th century typically had more in common with one another than they would with the Conquistator conflicts, the US Revolution, the US-Mexico War, and the US Civil War, all of which are found under the umbrella of "Losing Big."

Another problem that this book has is with the overemphasis on Napoleon. As another reviewer pointed out, having an entire section of multiple chapters devoted to various points of the Napoleonic Wars while only two chapters devoted to the entirety of World War II (one for the European Theater and the other for the Pacific) seems somehow very... wrong. I'm not saying morally or ethically, nor am I implying that it is insulting to anyone (though some people might object on that ground, but that is not what I am doing in this case), but it just feels wrong to relegate possibly the most defining conflict of the 20th century, during which many, many mistakes were made, to two chapters, while Napoleon gets an entire multi-chapter section. If the intention had been to point to modern mistakes and trace their roots to mistakes in the past, with special emphasis on the ways Napoleon's mistakes are influencing, i.e. failing to educate modern commanders, on military blunders in major conflicts even to this day, it would perhaps have been more effective to have one section for pre-modern conflicts, one for the "smaller" conflicts, one for the the Napoleonic Wars, and one for modern conflicts. As it stands, adding on to some of the the organisation problems is this inexplicable disproportionate focus on Napoleon that seems almost as if the contributors to this book have a strong dislike for as well as irresistible desire to humiliate the French. OK, I admit, it can be tempting, but they do that enough by themselves. I kid, I kid. No offense intended to any Frenchman/-woman reading this.

As for he annoyance that made me write this review in the first place, that is the misleading back blurb. Two campaigns that the book claims to cover----one involving Alexander the Great's invasion of India that leads him to be "in deep vindaloo" and the loss of Chiang Kai-shek's "pathetic army" to the Communist Revolution led by Mao---- were conspicuously missing. I'm not particularly upset, since I am familiar with those events based on what I have studied, but it is disappointing and almost feels like a betrayal of the reader's trust when content is advertised but not actually present in the book.

With all that said, this book was a decent effort. It tries to cover events from a different perspective; it is accessible provides and cursory background information for those who are interesting in learning more; and it's overall an interesting read. It suffers in terms of organisation, particularly with its points of emphasis (I'm looking at you, Napoleon, you glory hog). Some of the writing can be a bit dry, and when combined with the sheer amount of material covered, this can feel like a drag at times for the average reader----which even I felt at times, and I *should* be used to this by now from being a history student. Lastly, the misleading information on the back cover, which mentions two very interesting events in history that are unfortunately absent from the contents, also hurts this book.

My actual rating for this is 2.5/5, but since I can't do that and am feeling generous in this holiday season, I am rounding it up to 3/5. This is something that I would get from a library or buy at an used book sale or at a discount price.

Pretty good, but missing an advertised chapter

"Chiang Kai-Shek's pathetic army fails to keep Mao's Communists from grabbing China."

It was this text on the back of the book that finalized my decision on buying it. Yet no chapter detailing this struggle was there.

Certain essays were more interesting then others, which provided a solid read. It was just depressing that there was no Chiang Kai-Shek related material.

About the Author

Peggy Parish was born and grew up in Manning, South Carolina. Before moving to New York City, she taught school in the Panhandle country and in coal-mining areas. Her first job in New York City was with the Girl Scouts, and she now teaches the third grade at the Dalton School in Manhattan. Miss Parish is the author of several other books for children, including the popular Let's Be Indians.

Marc Simont was born in 1915 in Paris. His parents were from the Catalonia region of Spain, and his childhood was spent in France, Spain, and the United States. Encouraged by his father, Joseph Simont, an artist and staff illustrator for the magazine L'Illustration, Marc Simont drew from a young age. Though he later attended art school in Paris and New York, he considers his father to have been his greatest teacher.

When he was nineteen, Mr. Simont settled in America permanently, determined to support himself as an artist. His first illustrations for a children's book appeared in 1939. Since then, Mr. Simont has illustrated nearly a hundred books, working with authors as diverse as Margaret Wise Brown and James Thurber. He won a Caldecott Honor in 1950 for illustrating Ruth Krauss's The Happy Day, and in in 1957 he was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his pictures in A Tree is Nice, by Janice May Udry.

Internationally acclaimed for its grace, humor, and beauty, Marc Simont's art is in collections as far afield at the Kijo Picture Book Museum in Japan, but the honor he holds most dear is having been chosen as the 1997 Illustrator of the Year in his native Catalonia. Mr. Simont and his wife have one grown son, two dogs and a cat. They live in West Cornwall, Connecticut. Marc Simont's most recent book is The Stray Dog.

A monster tale

What would you do if you found a little lost monster? What is it was crying? What if it started to rain? Minneapolis Simpkin knew she had to take the monster home. She had been desperate for a pet anyway. She was also pretty sure her mother wouldn't like it one bit...

I have mixed feelings about this book. Judge for yourself:

The positives: This is a very funny book (with just a touch of spookiness). Expect nothing less from author Peggy Parish (of "Amelia Bedelia" fame). It turns some conventions upside down: Instead of being afraid of monsters lurking in the the closet or basement, our heroine PUT her monster in those places, and has a hard time of keeping it there. Also, did you know that monsters apparently love pickles?

The negatives: Minneapolis and her mother yell at each other. After a fight, Minn runs out of the house. At a later point, she wanders alone in the dark. And worst of all, she keeps a very big secret from her mother (after all, wouldn't you want to know if your kid brought a monster home?!?) These are not the lessons I want my child to learn.

Nota bene: All "Level 1" books are not created equal. Most of the words in this one are straight forward enough ("Minneapolis Simpkin," however, is quite the mouthful.) But the book is 64-pages long, with lots of fast-paced dialogue and other relatively advanced literary conventions. If your child is not able to read it independently, however, this is a fine book to read out loud.

No more monsters for me

I cannot tell you how much my sons love this book! They love this green monster and all the silly things that he has done with Minn. My sons will ask me to read this story in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening and for their bed-time story for a month and not feel tired of it!

Fun book!

My daughter has a fascination for monsters, so I knew that she would adore this book. Now she has a book about a monster that I can read to her at bedtime without worry of bad dreams. It's a very cute story.
