A Valuable Discourse

Being a good little white boy, I knew little about Sidney, but felt respect for him as an actor due, in part, to my discovery of "The Defiant Ones" as a child. (The movie is a powerful work about racism, and I loved it.)

This spiritual autobiography is no judgmental, squeaky-clean depiction of walking with God, nor is it an in-depth detour into the tribal religions available to Sidney as a child in the Bahamas. This book is an open-hearted view of the circumstances and, more importantly, the values that guided Sidney Poitier to the pinnacle of acting. He candidly discusses his failures as husband and father. He speaks lovingly of the example his parents gave him. And he shows the power of holding to your integrity no matter the cost.

By holding to this integrity, Sidney lost some opportunities and also gained respect from the white community, while facing ridicule as a "sell-out" from his own community. What stands out in his story is his desire to bring these communities together with respect, refusing to be dragged down by the bigotry and anger of either side. He speaks powerfully, encouraging us to focus anger in a positive way.

Mr. Poitier writes in an eloquent, yet communicative style. At times, he borders on unfocused rambling, but even then he has worthy things to say. This book is a valuable discourse on never giving up on your goals, on reaching beyond yourself to be who you were truly created to be. Thank you, Sidney, for your time.

Glad to Be Alive

I grew up in the South and, when I was in high school in the early sixties, Mr. Poitier's two blockbusters, "Raison in the Sun" and "Lilies of the Field" came out. There was something about him, even then, that caught my attention. Who WAS this man? It always seemed he was a "thinker" - a "seeker" - a bit restless with himself.

I recently picked up The Measure of a Man and my curiosity made me read it. Who IS this man - I wanted at last to find out.

The book begins in Cat Island, the Bahamas where he was born and lived during his early years. As Mr. Poitier describes his youth, it is reflective and feels like an intimate fireside conversation with a friend talking about a loved one departed. There is gratitude and respect - a certain remorse for doing some "kid things" that are so hurtful to those you truly love - and a reexamination of some of the "truths" he was taught.

Then the autobiography goes from there onto other stages in his life where he interacts with the realities and the illusions of life and comes to a sense of who he is and what is important. I guess I expected more of a "success story" about someone who is obviously very accomplished. What I got instead was a very touching and poignant sharing of a personal journey of a man making his way through life - no better and no worse than anyone else - immune from neither happiness nor disappointment - but glad to be alive.

Because so much of Mr. Poitier's autobiography had to do with things both good and challenging that just showed up in his life, it reminded me of another book by Ariel & Shya Kane called Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. In Being Here, the Kanes talk about things that have happened in their lives in a very light way that demonstrates how they and we can experience life more fully and more deeply - by just "being there" for what's happening when it's happening.

I really enjoyed reading both of these books and recommend them

Great Actor - Gifted Author!

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. While I do not always enjoy autobiographies, this book is a great exception. It is not just filled with dates and facts. It reaches inside the man and into his very soul. From his beginning on Cat Island, to today's highly successful life as an actor, Sidney Poitier has had an incredible life. He was blessed early in life with the greatest blessing anyone can have - great parents! This book made me stop and think of all the many blessings in my life, too many of which I take for granted sometimes. I hope that everyone who reads this book, and especially young people, will benefit from his insight and wisdom.

Never one to abandon a sound series hero indefinitely, Block (who recently resurrected burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr) has now also brought back international man of action Evan Tanner, after more than 25 years. As usual, Block has a good joke up his sleeve: Tanner, one of whose characteristics is his inability to sleep, had in fact been comatose?in a deep freeze, in fact?for all that time, and the scene where he wakes up, thinking Richard Nixon is still president, is as funny and sharp as a similar one in Woody Allen's Sleeper. After that, Tanner is off to a new exotic locale, activated as usual by his vaguely CIA manager: this time it's to Burma, where he's supposed to destabilize the government by assassinating a popular opposition figure. He doesn't do it, of course, but becomes involved instead with a beautiful woman who wants to flee the country and eventually, after participating in a guerrilla action, both manage to do so. It's never less than inventive and amusing, but Block is always most at home in Manhattan, and his overseas settings, deftly sketched as they are, lack the ultimate authenticity he finds there. Tanner, too, though endowed with the author's usual wry wit, is not as fully fleshed out as are Block's more recent creations; but this will do until another Scudder comes along.

Tanner is back and all is right with the world

Richard Nixon was president of the United States when Evan Tanner, the man who never sleeps, was placed into a comatose state in a Union City, New Jersey freezer due to an intricate double cross. If the basement of his "permanent home" was not being remodeled, he would have been there a lot longer. No one knows, even the medical experts at NYU, what happened to him except that he should be in his sixties, but Evan looks like he is only in his thirties.
He is soon contacted by Rufus Crombie of the Feds, who wants Evan to fly to Burma where he is supposed to eliminate San Suu Kyi, the popular opposition leader, in order to send the current government into chaos. However, Evan was never an assassin and does not plan to start the practice in his second life. He also has met a cool woman in Rangoon, who he genuinely likes and heeds her advice. Than there is the problems with the local police constantly harassing him and the anonymous note threatening his life if he fails to leave town.
Like he did with Rhodenbarr, Lawrence Block successfully returns an old fan favorite. The likable lead protagonist struggles with the missing eighties and the trends of the nineties, an iteresting combination which adds much to the story line. TANNER ON ICE will be well-received by a generation of new fans even though the novel is not quite on a par with his Rhodenbarr and Scudder books. Still the Tanner books are terrific tales worth reading and that opportunity will soon become readily available as the novels are all going to be reprinted.

Fun, But Not Enough Fun

This revival of Block's most "high concept" series is a bit higher in concept than previous entries. Not only is Tanner a man who can't sleep, but now he's been out like a light for 25 years and has missed a quarter century of social upheaval.
In one of his books on writing, Block talks a bit about the then-dormant Tanner series and why it had become dormant. One reason he cited was that many of the protagonist's lunatic-fringe interests weren't fringe any more, or at least had struggled a bit closer to center stage. He's right, I think. Many of the simmering ethnic conflicts, conspiracies and such that were grist for Tanner's mill in the old days are headline material now. (Not all, though. The funniest moment in this book comes when Tanner matter-of-factly explains to his part-Russian lady friend that she might, just might, be a beneficiary in a movement to restore the Russian monarchy.)
The problem, is, the Tanner books were never as tightly plotted as some of Block's other books -- they were romps, and their very romptitude carried them along. Now that events have diminished the central conceit, this book's weaknesses are highlighted -- much of the action takes place off-stage, several key events are chalked up to "I guess we'll never know," and too many scenes are summarized, rather than shown.
That said, I enjoyed the book. It's full of witty asides and characterization bits. and I think I would enjoy future outings, if Block can come up with some way to make the series motor work again, like he did with the Chip Harrison books. Tanner is a fun character and he could probably get a lot of mileage out of the current X-Files/conspiracy freak atmosphere, for example.

ITS THE END OF AN ERA!!!!!!!!

TANNER ON ICE is the final volume of the world’s most refreshing set of espionage books. The tale opens innocently enough, with our man Evan enjoying a friendly drink with another political theorist, named Harald Engstrom, who happens to be a member of SKOAL, which (in Mr Block’s words, taken from location 136) is ’an acronymic organisation committed to restoring lost areas of Sweden and Norway to Danish control.” But as Tanner says to this supposed new friend in a “pine-panelled basement recreation room ...” (Location 123), “You’ve got to get people to realise they are oppressed before you can get them to revolt.” (Location 136). I’m loving this already....

It turns out the drink mentioned above was laced with a chemical strong enough to make even a non-sleeper like Tanner to be temporarily put down. Into a cryogenics tank, of all things. Twenty five years later, he is finally brought back to consciousness. The world has changed. Presidents have come and gone. Former European countries have crumbled into smaller but more plentiful European countries. New high rises scatter the skyline of the world’s greatest metropolis, and on the way home in a taxi, the penny drops. An epiphany is granted. Light dawns. Whatever happened to Sweet, Innocent Little Minna? Read chapter three of this wonderfully-begun tale, and you will find out.

But have some tissues handy. You never know when you might sneeze.

This time around, Tanner is tasked with infiltrating Burma with a dodgy American passport, avoiding the attention of members of SLORC and restore the freedom of e national hero, who also happens to be a lady by the name of Aung San Soo Chee. Given Evan Tanner’s run of luck when it comes to rescuing maidens in distress, it is a sure bet that she will be stunning to behold. And stunning to hold, even...

TANNER ON ICE is a great way to end the series. Long term fans of Mr Block will always live on in the hope of one more book, one more book, one more book. If it comes, that is great. But even if it doesn’t, there are eight glorious stories we can always pick up again in due course and relive the magic of the superhero who never sleeps. My favourite Tanner novels (in order) are volumes two and three and then number one. Book two was pure story telling magic, and non stop hilarious fun. Book three was a riot from start to finish, and of course book one was the spark that lit this particular bonfire of genius. They are all worth reading, of course, but those were my favourites.

A fine little ring of keys.

While the reading can be a little bit dry (I recommend some cheese and wine as well as some paper for taking notes to help it go down), this thin volume is a fine outline of an alchemical perspective on the mysteries of life.

I would recommend this piece to someone who is interested in the meaning of life, different anthropological perspectives, and has some familiarity with common occult symbolism, or is willing to look things up constantly.

If a few chapters of The Golden Bough weren't too intimidating, this could be a good read for you.

A Must-Read Work on Leadership and Organizations

* Provides a researched system of classifying organizations and businesses as "tribes" that is easy to apply.
* Has useful ideas for helping people "tribe up" and improve their relations and improve organizational relations.
* Very readable and understandable.
* Doesn't pull punches on some of the conclusions.

CONS:

* Some historical interpretations are arguable.

SUMMARY: Buy this book and read it unless you have no interest in community, leadership, and business. In that case you're probably not even reading this blog.

Leadership books. I've been getting tired of them ever since people started deciding "The Art of War" could by applied to businesses if you ignored all the war, killing, use of fire, and soforth in the book. Everyone talks about Leadership in business and in the world, but as I don't see any improvement out there as the amount of lame Leadership books increase, so I assume most of these texts aren't that useful.

At the same time, I'm very interested of issues in Leadership since I don't see nearly enough of it. I see bean-counting management, rock-star style poseurs, and exploitative jerks with a narrative. I don't see enough leadership in business, politics, media, or more - real, rallying, directing, powerful leadership.

Tribal Leadership is the kind of book I've been waiting for. It not only explores issue of leadership, mostly (but not entirely) dealing with business, but issues of culture, organization, and community. In many ways its a book of applied sociology that happens to focus mostly on business.

Based on research covering a decade, the book lays out a very clear thesis:

1. Humans naturally form tribes.
2. These tribes can be classified into 5 types each with a unique attitude towards life, and become more functional as you move from Type 1 to Type 5.
3. It is possible to coach people and groups to "tribe up" the scale to become more cohesive, functional, and productive (and in some cases at least less pathological)

The book is split between describing the theories, and describing how people and groups can advance from lower to higher Tribal levels. Each chapter leads naturally to the next, and handy checklists and bulletpoints help you keep track of important ideas. This clear focus and organization makes the book easy to read, refer to, and use.

As for the theory itself? It's simple and intuitive Essentially there are five tribal types, each defined by an attitude of members:
Level 1 - "Life Sucks" - pathological, gang-like, angry.
Level 2 - "My Life Sucks" - a mix of learned helplessness, bitterness.
Level 3 - "I'm Great" - Productive and dynamic but egocentric.
Level 4 - "We're Great" - tribe-oriented, creative, productive, tight.
Level 5 - "Life Is Great" - Big-picture, tribe-connecting.

You can probably guess right now which level you and your friends and co-workers function at (hint: you're probably also wrong).

The theory itself is extremely applicable in my experience, and the authors give extensive information to help you understand where you and your various organizations fit on the tribal scale. The clear boundaries of levels, straightforward explanations, and explanations of the classifications helps you use this theory and see the sheer lack of B.S. Just be prepared for a few ego-bruises because most people think they function higher than they do (and this book will puncture your illusions).

The theory comes with tips, advice, and directions for raising tribal level of people and organization. These sections are straightforward with excellent detail, from things to try, to signs to look for to identify personal progress. Again there's a refreshing lack of B.S. here.

So is the book flawless? No. There's a few moments of historical reference and metaphor that seem stretched or that I disagree with. There could be some better explanation of techniques at a few points.

These are minor concerns.

Here's what you need to know about this book- you should read it unless you have a reason not to, like a lack of money or being currently dead.

How much did I like this book? I've given two copies as gifts and my Kindle edition is filled with notes, I've joined a group to discuss it, founded another, and am discussing applying it's philosophy with other people. Yeah, I was impressed.

A new way to look at Leadership

I read a lot of business books and a lot of books on leadership - most of them have at least a few good ideas in them, but this is the first leadership book I've read that's driven me to look at organizations and the art of leadership in a completely different way. Another reviewer mentioned that it was liking having someone giving you glasses and suddenly being able to see in a completely different way - I felt that way as well. Even better, this isn't a book that just shares some opinions or ideas, with over 10 years of research across 24,000 people it's pretty clear the authors did a lot of hard research to figure out Tribal Leadership.

What is Tribal Leadership - in a nutshell it's a completely new framework for how to look at leadership and creating high performing organizations. It's not about strategy and it's all about the culture and the evolution of the organization. It turns out there are 5 distinct stages of organizational culture that all build on one another.

Stage 1 - Life Sucks...equivalent of a street gang mentality, not really a factor in most professional settings
Stage 2 - My Life Sucks...Dilbert, the employees at Dunder Mifflin (The Office) or the employees at Initech Software (Office Space) are great, if a little over done examples of Stage 2 cultures.
Stage 3 - I'm Great! (and you're not) - the lone warrior who is very competent and effective by themselves, but doesn't share well with others. Office politics, bad management practices and Stage 2 Cultures all come from Stage 3 managers.

Stage 4 - We're Great - the language changes from I, Me to We and Us. It's all about the success of the team vs. individual accomplishments. The only way to really get to Stage 4 is to really 'own' stage 3. Stage 4 organizations will significantly out perform Stage 3 and lower organizations in terms of financial results and ability to get things done.

Stage 5 - Life is Great...this stage occurs sporadically when Stage 4 organizations rise to a significant challenge and do something borderline miraculous (Think the 1980 Miracle on Ice US Hockey victory).

In order to get an organization to Stage 4, the majority of people within an organization need to be at Stage 4...they need to have reached an epiphany in Stage 3 that doing everything yourself isn't productive in the long run - you've got to have a team that you can count on if you really want to make things happen.

A couple of key ideas that are critical for Stage 4 include:
Triadic relationships - basically the idea that a group of 3 people can form a very effective and stable relationship when they all 3 share the burden of making the relationship successful.
Core Values - In order to reach a stage 4 culture, a group must have clearly stated alignment on core values...the types of values that make getting up in the morning important!
Noble Cause - Finally, Stage 4 cultures revolve around ideas that are bigger than any 1 person...you must have a Noble Cause that everyone understands and gets behind.

It's tough to summarize these really big ideas - but hopefully that gives you a taste. The book has a lot of interesting stories and examples and the authors do a nice job of stepping you through the ideas in a logical flow that makes a lot of sense. If you're looking for a set of ideas that will really shake up how you think and how you create a team that will do more...a lot more than you need to check out Tribal Leadership!

Insightful but not necessarily rigorous

What I liked:
Rich insights into human behaviour, group dynamics and individual motivation.
Very useful, structured and specific suggestions - in essence, management tips that can be applied.
More readable than the average business book - well written.
I would have liked:
Less of a "consultant hard sell" tone. I think there's an emerging pattern of consultant academics writing books that over-sell the observations within, and verge on style exceeding substance. There is good stuff in this book, and the tips appear sensible, but the constant "move up one level at a time" to "the fifth level that we don't even know yet" ...maybe it's just me, but I think this book would benefit by turning down the volume; not every set of consultants' observations needs to promise a transformed world - it's not going to happen. I think this is a common problem in current business literature.
Summary:
In my view, a very accessible and useful book that possibly over-estimates its own "system".
I'd recommend it to young managers as a very good introduction to organisational dynamics, and to entrepreneurs who need a little help understanding the motivations of their employees.
This book probably augments "Good To Great" quite nicely - if you liked that, you might like this; I'd read "Good To Great" first.

Great Book... even better series.

Well let's see, I am a 40 year old male that sometimes get embarrassed when I read the grade level for these Joseph Delaney books, but let me tell you; they are very entertaining. I love how all the forces come together for this installment. Great story telling. The problem is you read the books so fast and you end up wanting more. So I picked up the the Witches Revenge and started reading it again. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great good vs. evil book.

Demons, Devils and Witchy Women

When I cracked open this book and saw a screaming woman with bloodied knives in each of her hands, and a face covered in swirling Maori-like tattoos staring up at me, I knew I would once again be frightened out of my wits for the entire time it would take me to read Clash of the Demons. Delaney returns with a more powerful than ever, frightful tale of the latest adventure of the Spook and young Tom Ward.

Tom's mother has returned from Greece and wishes him and the Spook to accompany her back to her homeland to fight off the greatest of evil beings, that if not slayed, will destroy the country and soon the world. So desperate for assistance in her plight she gathers up all the local witches, including Gramalkin whom we have fought before, and pulls together all of Tom's past foes to fight evil with evil as she believes it is her only chance to rid the world of the abomination called the Ordeen. The Spook doesn't like the sound of this plan one bit, and at first refuses to go as it is against his principle to fight the demons of the world with darkness itself, but he is finally convinced after talking with fellow spook Arkwright, and Mam herself, that it will be THE only way to win this war. Alice too, Tom's friendly witch-amore that we saw banished from Chipenden by the Spook in the last episode, is also called upon to help and make the journey.

It is a sorrowful, weary and terrified band of both light and dark that board the ship Celeste, all silently praying they will come back alive. With a few shocking surprises regarding who Tom's mother is, and a couple of visits from Tom's old arch enemy the Fiend, the motley group of bloodthirsty witches and ghost-busting spooks arrive in the land of Meteora to battle the dark in a gory bloodbath like we've never seen before in this series of books. Alice redeems herself, the Spook resigns himself, two party members sacrifice themselves for the cause, and Mam, finally after seven books, reveals all to Tom, what she was, what she is, and what she shall become.

Tom is given hard choices with few options in the Clash of Demons, but the reader will enjoy his growing strengths and power as he learns to recall and put to use all that the Spook has taught him over the years, proving to be a force to be reckoned with as the forces of good and evil challenge his wits and test his skills.

Scarier than the previous books, I couldn't put this book down and loved every drop of blood that fell upon my quickly turned pages. Once again the illustrator also deserves high praise, I thought this batch of drawings heart-stopping and fabulous to behold. I thought that this being book seven for the seventh son of the seventh son, would finish off the series, but as it appears by the ending, there is thankfully more to come. I never tire of these Last Apprentice stories and do hope they never end. They scare me to death but I smile as I devour them hungry for more!!!

Great book in an amazing series

Another great book in a very fun, well-written series. I enjoy these books as much as my 15-year old son. I don't usually like horror, but these books are page-turners. They ARE gory and frightening, so not appropriate for kids under 10 or 11, in my opinion. Read Book One first. Each book has its own complete story and conclusion, but they build upon one another, adding more information with each book. The main character, Thomas Ward, is extremely likeable (a humble hero) and he's surrounded by an intriguing mix of fascinating side characters. The problems Tom faces are never simple, and the answers are never clear. He often must choose between two terrible choices. Which keeps me turning pages. The plot moves along as a very brisk pace. In fact, my one complaint with this series is that the books end too soon. I read this book in two days and eagerly await more.

About the Author

Geri Larkin gave up a successful career as a management consultant to become a Buddhist teacher. A practicing Buddhist since 1988, she completed seminary and was ordained in 1995. A Book About Pulling Weeds in Your Yard -- and in Your Spiritual Approach to a Better Life

Geri Larkin's life has taken her from the heights of American business to the simplicity of Buddhist practice. She began her career as a jet-setting business consultant -- and is ending it as a sort of free-lance teacher and landscape consultant living in a tiny home in the Pacific Northwest.

In fact, in this new book she writes that when she volunteers at an emergency food bank -- it's impossible to tell her and the other folks running the program from the clients in need of the emergency food.

It's a wonderful journey, which Geri has laid out for readers in a series of books that are half spiritual memoir and half Zen advice about everything from personal relations to -- in this new book -- cooking up the dandelions you've pulled from your front yard.

Around the time her previous book, "The Chocolate Cake Sutra," was published, I invited a group of high school students to spend time interviewing Geri for a documentary film on prayer and meditation. Geri was heading back to southeast Michigan for a few days from her new home in the Pacific Northwest, and I told the students that the cost of a seat with Geri was reading her book.

If you know anything about the busy lives of teenagers, the idea of reading a book on Buddhism sounds like an impossible challenge. But, on the day of the interview, an eager little crowd of students pulled couches up around Geri's own easy chair. They pulled out these beautifully well-thumbed copies of her book -- their pages sprouting bookmarks, sticky notes and slips of paper with questions scribbled to ask Geri.

That's the best way I can convey the excitement of her spiritual voice. It can hook and hold a busy teenager -- or a busy middle-aged writer like myself.

These are books not to be missed, because they leave you with a hopeful smile on your face -- and a fistful of good ideas to make sure that smile is shared with someone else.

They're great for small groups -- easy reading, but deep provocative wisdom in each chapter.

A lesson that applies to all life's challenges

I've loved Geri Larkin's books since my first read and each one gets better and better. Geri shares her new life out west, and as usual, she shares her journeys, friends, pets, and posies. She gets cranky about a cold day and I love that even she takes a little while to "get it" when lessons pop up in her every day life. The title and the book lovingly suggest that we need to pay attention to our lives -- "plant seeds" whether they are ideas or relationships; and "pull weeds". . . we know who and what they are. It's as simple and as difficult as that. The best is the simple lesson on enthusiasm. Read it in a coffee shop and enjoy the looks you get as you laugh and cry out loud. Great to hear you are doing well, Geri! Waiting for your next book, with enthusiasm.

Like gardening with the Dalai Lama's younger sister

"Plant Seed, Pull Weed" is a garden of reading delight. Geri Larkin (whose books I've not read before) is warm, funny, wise, authentic, unpretentious, and inspiring. Reading "Plant Seed, Pull Weed" is like gardening with the Dalai Lama's younger sister, the one responsible for growing the community roses and veggies who is still cheerfully learning.

There are ten chapters in this slender book (192 double-spaced, wide-margin pages), each considering a quality valued in Buddhism and, for that matter, valued in many faiths & spiritual practices:

--casing the landscape: developing a clear intention
--rolling up your sleeves: transcending hesitation
--preparing the ground: seeding
--the great fertilizer: generousity
--planting like you mean it: enthusiasm
--weeds and more weeds: taming our minds
--tomatoes grow at their own speed: patience
--weeding at the root: anger
--the great harvest: joy
--the whole world is our garden: vigilance

Many metaphors could frame discussions of these virtues---cooking, child rearing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, iron mongery, sheep raising, archery and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The virtues considered work well & beautifully, in Larkin's hands, with gardening. Her writing combines stories about the famous, such as Bill Gates, and stories about the wonderful actions of people who have much much less; about legendary monks from centuries past; about her beloved Master under whom she studied for almost a decade; about her experiences as a landscaper's assistant and in a nursery; about guidance from the Gautama Buddha and from that magnificent gardener, philosopher, and writer, Henry Mitchell.

Here's an example of Larkin's style:

"When we start to notice our wild and crazy minds, we also start to see just how much our thinking determines our levels of---let's just call it what it is---sanity. When we know this, taming our thoughts becomes an important task. The first step to this taming is simply seeing what is going on up there in the first place. To pay attention, meditation helps. So does gardening. Especially gardening tasks where we really have to pay attention, like clearing blackberry bushes on a steep hill or weeding beside a foundation for red ants."

I've fallen in love with Larkin's approach, content, and recipes (just a few are given). She also makes well-chosen suggestions for further reading that augment the gardening side of "Plant Seed, Pull Weed." The ten "nature- and gardening related books that convey the sweet feeling that a life filled with small doings can bring" include, for example, Dillard's "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" and Nichol's lovely "Garden Open Today."

Perhaps this seems like a small thing, but the dust jacket & design of "Plant Seed, Pull Weed" are lovely. The jacket perhaps comes from a Japanese painting of an opening peony attended by a dragon fly, a visual image of the becoming the book may help us realize.

Any negatives? Readers should expect about 30% gardening, mostly in the Seattle context, and about 70% Buddhist teachings. Maybe 40%/60% depending on the chapter. Readers seeking detailed guidance on plants, landscaping, gardening could enjoy "Plant Seed, Pull Weed" but need to look elsewhere for detail. And readers who are Zen masters may appreciate how skillfully the teachings are given yet need other sources for their nourishment.

Also, as a minor reader alert, those who follow Don Marquis may remember Archie's exasperation at the unceasing "cheer up, cheer up, cheer up" of a katydid. "Groan once," says Archie, "or I will go mad." While "Plant Seed, Pull Weed" is not smarmy-cutesy-smiley, Larkin does not dwell on the world's griefs. She wisely may figure we each have our own weeds. are aware of the shadows in the grass,and seek affirmatively "to nurture the gardens of our lives" and the lives of others.

Highly and enthusiastically recommended.
