Save Me from Myself: How I Found God, Quit Korn, Kicked Drugs, and Lived to Tell My Story, by Brian

The amazing true story of an out-of-control rock star, his devastating addiction to drugs, and his miraculous redemption through Jesus Christ. In February 2005, more than ten thousand people in Bakersfield, California, watched as Brian "Head" Welch--the former lead guitarist of the controversial rock band Korn--was saved by Jesus Christ. The event set off a media frenzy as observers from around the world sought to understand what led this rock star out of the darkness and into the light. Now, in this courageous memoir, Head talks for the first time about his shocking embrace of God and the tumultuous decade that led him into the arms of Jesus Christ. Offering a backstage pass to his time with Korn, Head tells the inside story of his years in the band and explains how his rock star lifestyle resulted in an all-consuming addiction to methamphetamines. Writing openly about the tour bus mayhem of Ozzfest and The Family Values tour, he provides a candid look at how the routine of recording, traveling, and partying placed him in a cycle of addiction that he could not break on his own.Speaking honestly about his addiction, Head details his struggles with the drug that ultimately led him to seek a higher power. Despite his numerous attempts to free himself from meth, nothing--not even the birth of his daughter--could spur him to kick it for good. Here Head addresses how, with the help of God, he emerged from his dangerous lifestyle and found a path that was not only right for his daughter, it was right for him. Discussing the chaotic end to his time in Korn and how his newfound faith has influenced his relationship with his daughter, his life, and his music, Head describes the challenging but rewarding events of the last two years, exposing the truth about how his moments of doubt and his hardships have only deepened his faith.Candid, compelling, and inspirational, Save Me from Myself is a rock 'n' roll journey unlike any other.

From Publishers Weekly
Welch starts his memoir with a bang: sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll, and hitting bottom are all packed into his short prologue, launching the story of the rock star’s rise, fall, and subsequent conversion to Christianity. Unfortunately, Welch, the former lead guitarist of the hardcore metal band Korn, never quite gets back to the punchy, dramatic style that so vividly sets in motion what could be a fascinating read, but at times is more like a casual chronology of events—despite his willingness to curse and his rocker tone. The book’s first section is a catalogue of teenage rebellion (tormenting his brother, watching horror flicks, smoking pot), yet somehow lacks drama, and Welch can’t resist listing every single band he formed, played with, and left before finally making it with Korn. It’s not until Welch tells of a visionary experience —one that eventually leads him to Jesus—that this story gains momentum as a spiritual memoir. Fans of Noah Levine (Dharma Punx) may enjoy Welch’s hard-core tone, though be warned: Welch is now hard-core on Jesus, and he hopes this story "might save a lot of people from going down the roads of destruction that [he] traveled on."

Now I understand
By William M. Sweet
I now understand why Head left the band. All this time, we had nothing to go on but what the media had to say, and a few interviews. They still left me feeling a little discouraged as to why one of my idols would just drop off the face of the planet. This book definitely puts Head's Korn experience into perspective. Although I'd like to see him reunite with the band, sober of course, this confirms it will never happen. The book becomes very hard to put down once you've started, especially since I'm a Korn fan. I recommend this book not only to Korn fans, but to people who want to see real life experiences that prove there is always something more out there.

Brian Welch - A Rockers Real Inspiration to Transform Addiction & Misery
By Barbara Rose
In Save Me from Myself, Brian Welch former rock lead guitarist of the band Korn shares so openly, humbly and completely honestly about his life, growing up in "Bako" (Bakersfield, CA), his family life and the living hell he experienced, to finding his way to a sane stable life, free of drug addiction, with his connection to Jesus Christ.

Brian is a real hero for the millions of fans of his former rock group. The teens who also feel isolated, hurt, misunderstood and angry can now (finally) learn the real truth about the downward spiral of drug addiction, and how they can turn it around to have a much happier life.

The book reads as if you're listening to a real, down-to-earth friend, who just tells it like it is. Brian isn't looking for glory here, he's sharing from his heart. By the courageous example he sets, this book should be a MUST READ for anyone who can relate to the life Brian used to have, and how to positively turn that around.

True Believer with an Awesome Testimony
By Evonne Landwehr
I purchased this book for my 19 year old son but after meeting Brian at a book signing decided to read it for myself before sending it to my son. I could not put it down. I read the book cover to cover in a matter of hours. Brian has the sweetest spirit and writes from his heart. While he is honest about his choices he does not condemn or judge others. I also appreciated that he was modest in describing his former lifestyle and didn't get overly detailed or graphic. You get the picture without being grossed out with unnecessary detail. My only concern is that Christian fundamentalists will freak out when he challenges the effectiveness of organized religion in reaching souls for Christ, however, I completely AGREE with him that FIRST you get right with God by asking Jesus to come into your heart and life and save you from your(self) and your sins in order to have a right relationship with God. Church is part of learning and growing in fellowship and in understanding God's Word but it is NOT essential in saving grace. I loved this book and I am praying for the success of Brian's ministry. Furthermore, my 19 year old son, who is a heavy metal guitar player and a born again Christian, told me that he feels closer to God as a result of reading Brian's story. I believe it will also really be an inspiration to him as he navigates some of the trappings of the music industry. The world needs this man's perspective on Jesus and I am grateful to him for sharing his story.

About the Author

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up.

Instead she became a librarian. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born!

Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. Dear Mr. Henshaw won the Newbery Medal, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. Her characters, including Beezus and Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, have delighted children for generations.

B. D. Wong made his Broadway debut in M. Butterfly. He is the only actor to be honored with the Tony Award®, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Clarence Derwent Award, and Theater World Award for the same performance.

From AudioFile
What a treat! This classic, originally published in 1970, proves its staying power in this entertaining audio edition. The tale continues the adventures of Ralph, that extraordinary mouse star of THE MOUSE AND THE MOTORCYCLE. Tired of his boring life at the Mountain View Inn, frustrated by nagging elders and annoying younger siblings and cousins, he decides to leave in search of "a life of speed and danger and excitement." B. D. Wong tells Ralph's story with energy, enthusiasm, and humor. He creates a believable world in which a mouse can talk to certain open-minded humans and ride off on adventures with a crash helmet on his head and a "pb-pb-b-b-b" sound to energize the motorcycle. Great book, narration is so-so.
By A.B.
I grew up reading this book over and over. Since it was one of my childhood favorites, I decided to purchase the audiobook for my children to listen to on a road trip. The book was as good as I remembered, but the narration is only so-so. The narrator does differentiate between when characters are speaking and when they are not, but I found his accents irritating and un-California like. The voice of Matt, the 60-year-old bellboy would be one example. Matt's voice was quite high pitched and squeaky, like I would expect the Ralph's to be. Others characters sounded like Fran Dresher from "The Nanny." All-in-all, I give it three stars because, while it disappointed me, it didn't disappoint the children. They have already listened to it again since coming home.

Runaway Ralph Rocks!
By Roberta E. Glaser
B.D. Wong reading "Runaway Ralph" by Beverly Cleary is a runaway hit! Wong reads three of Cleary's books and brings them to life. The "Ralph" series is clever and creative. My granddaughter is now 9, and we listen to these over and over. Neither she nor I tire of them. In fact, after listening to this audiobook last week, I asked her to think of an adventure Ralph could have next. We're currently working on that! When invited to a baby shower where books are requested, I've been giving one of Cleary's books from the "Ralph" series. We love them that much!

We have had this audio book for over four years. Our children repeatedly ask to hear this, and quite honestly we parents enjoy it too. Beverly Cleary has a child's heart and brings you into their world as well as the world of Ralph and his family. You will never look at a mouse the same way!

The Outsider: A Memoir, by Jimmy Connors

The Outsider is a no-holds-barred memoir by the original bad boy of tennis, Jimmy Connors.

Connors ignited the tennis boom in the 1970s with his aggressive style of play, turning his matches with John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, and Ivan Lendl into prizefights. But it was his prolonged dedication to his craft that won him the public’s adoration. He capped off one of the most remarkable runs in tennis history at the age of 39 when he reached the semifinals of the 1991 U.S. Open, competing against players half his age.

More than just the story of a tennis champion, The Outsider is the uncensored account of Connors' life, from his complicated relationship with his formidable mother and his storybook romance with tennis legend Chris Evert, to his battles with gambling and fidelity that threatened to derail his career and his long-lasting marriage to Playboy playmate Patti McGuire.

When he retired from tennis twenty years ago, Connors all but disappeared from public view. In The Outsider, he is back at the top of his game, and as feisty, outspoken, and defiant as ever.

From the Back Cover

Jimmy Connors is a working-man's hero, a people's champion who could tear the cover off a tennis ball, just as he tore the cover off the country-club gentility of his sport. A renegade from the wrong side of the tracks, Connors broke the rules with a radically aggressive style of play and bad-boy antics that turned his matches into prizefights. In 1974 alone, he won 95 out of 99 matches, all of them while wearing the same white shorts he washed in the sink of his hotel bathrooms. Though he lived the rock star life away from tennis, his enduring dedication to his craft earned him eight Grand Slam singles titles and kept him among the top ten best players in the world for sixteen straight years—five at number one.

In The Outsider, Connors tells the complete, uncensored story of his life and career, setting the record straight about his formidable mother, Gloria; his very public romance with America's sweetheart Chris Evert; his famous opponents, including Björn Borg, John McEnroe, Arthur Ashe, Ivan Lendl, and Rod Laver; his irrepressible co-conspirators Ilie Nastase and Vitas Gerulaitis; and his young nemesis Andre Agassi. Connors reveals how his issues with obsessive-compulsive disorder, dyslexia, gambling, and women at various times threatened to derail his career and his long-lasting marriage to Playboy Playmate Patti McGuire.

Presiding over an era that saw tennis attract a new breed of passionate fans—from cops to tycoons—Connors transformed the game forever with his two-handed backhand, his two-fisted lifestyle, and his epic rivalries.

The Outsider is a grand slam of a memoir written by a man once again at the top of his game—as feisty, unvarnished, and defiant as ever.

About the Author

Originally from East St. Louis, he lives in Santa Barbara, California, with his family.

Excellent insight into pro tennis and its original 'bad boy'
By D. Graves
This is more than you might expect. It's not a "how great I was" autobiography nor a "tell-all" book filled with shocking stories of the sordid events in a famous tennis star's life; it is perhaps a bit of both of those to some degree but generally it's a real story of a real outsider who conquered the tennis world. Not that Connors is always straight-forward and endearing as he tells his story: he has many axes to grind (with fellow tennis stars and others) and tends to put himself in the most favorable light of most contentious events he was a part of, but, in general, he seems quite honest about his life and mistakes and is not unduly proud of his accomplishments. He's a likeable guy.

Jimmy Connors did come from humble roots in East St. Louis, Illinois, coached by his mother to be good enough at 16 for him to venture out to California at that age - alone - to receive professional coaching. The fact that his mother remained an important force in his tennis career caused many in pro tennis circles (including tennis media people) to deem Connors as a 'momma's boy' and to be highly critical of his mother. We get at the heart of Connors as he writes of the importance of his mother in his life and his anger at how she was treated:

"Why was it OK for Joe Montana's dad to teach his son football or Wayne Gretzky's dad to teach him hockey but it wasn't OK for Gloria Connors to teach her son tennis?"

Indeed.

There are plenty of salacious passages about his wild years on the tennis circuit, a wealth of insider information about that world behind the facade of Wimbledon and the US Open (including why he loathes the All-England Club, for example), his almost-marriage to Chris Evert, pot-shots at John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Arthur Ashe and other players, his occasionally-difficult but long-lasting marriage to his Playboy Playmate wife, Patti, and much more. It's a very interesting read if you lived through those years where Connors was the original 'bad boy' of tennis. Whether Connors intends it or not, you get the sense that Jimmy Connors was only temporarily a "star", and remained just a driven, talented - but somewhat flawed (as we all are) - regular guy from East St. Louis, Illinois.

Surprisingly candid memoir and excellent blend of personal info and tennis history
By Kcorn
This memoir blindsided me, far more open and revealing a book than I expected from Jimmy Connors, someone who by his own admission tends to be wary of people and not given to personal revelations. Yet somehow he manages to be surprisingly open in The Outsider, all without softening his edgy personality or blunt take on life.

It was fascinating to read of the journey Connors took to move "tennis from those gated country clubs to the streets." This struggle was part of what made him an outsider (his temperament was another part of that), unwilling to accept the status quo. He wanted to reach out to the average person and change the image of tennis. He was willing to buck the system even if he offended the "old-school fans" who perceived him as "a crude upstart trampling their precious traditions."

The Outsider deftly straddles a fine line, balancing personal information (a romance with Chris Evert, tensions with John McEnroe, a crisis in his marriage) with details about tennis history, technique, and pivotal championships. Although he wasn't above seeking revenge, there were sections in the book when Connors gave credit to players who disliked him. He even calls Arthur Ashe's win over him at Wimbledon in 1975 "flawless". Although Connors went into that game injured, with hairline fractures in a shin, he doesn't use that as an excuse for his loss.

Even in the first few chapters, it becomes clear that Connors overcame plenty to become a tennis champion. But he also had some incredible role models. One of those was his mother. When he was only 8 years old he saw her get punched in the mouth by a couple of thugs at a public tennis court. Even though she was injured so badly she lost her teeth, she still got up and practiced tennis with her two sons the next morning.

What Connors witnessed left him with a permanent anger and drive. His mother also taught him how to harness and use those emotions to his advantage on the tennis court. She was criticized harshly by some members of the press for her involvement in her son's life. But Connors gives her due credit for playing a pivotal role, a living example for him of the mental toughness needed to become a tennis champion. Perhaps her example helped him find the perseverance needed to win matches right after serious injuries.

I was particularly moved when reading the poignant chapter focused on friend and fellow player Vitas Gerulaitis. His untimely death at age 40 stunned Connors. I was near tears as I read the details Connors shared about Gerulaitis, their friendship, and accomplishments. It was a friendship that endured even as Gerulaitis struggled with a serious cocaine habit.

I'm not a huge tennis buff (although I made a point of watching Connors play whenever possible) and yet I couldn't stop reading this memoir. Connors seems to exemplify his belief that "It's not what you accomplish; it's what you overcome to accomplish it that sets you apart."

Candid, Honest, Jimmy Connors
By Princess
This book will speak to you, I believe most especially to those who vividly recall the fraternity of Connors, Nastase,
Lendl, Borg and Johnny Mac amongst others in the 70s and 80s, the era of the bad boys with talent and big personalities to back the glib verbosity that made them captivating stars.

This is not a tell all. This is not artfully written. At times he cuts the telling of a tale to a paragraph whilst waxing about the origins of his footwork, topspin, backhand to the tenth degree; in here lies the beauty of THE OUTSIDER -- this is Jimmy Connors spinning the narrative central to his being, it's all about tennis and its always, always been about tennis.

His love for the game and his determination to be the best radiates with honesty in pure Connors directness.

There are some classic stories, pure gems about friendships, foolishness, romance, and recklessness and lessons learned.
Tales from his life which he has the right to portion out as he sees fit (which he does and right now I'm referring to Chris Evert--his one time sweetheart, but certainly no sweetheart) and again, doled out with truth and just enough information held back to maintain respect.

Evert, is old news the other relationships are far more wooly, fun and eye-opening. His wife Patti is his backbone, his children are a revelation to him, the complex relationship with his mother Gloria is explained and defined. what a woman!

But in the end this autobiography is Jimmy Connors telling the world how much he loved the game, explaining his issues but being true to himself.

I miss the bad boy(s) of tennis. Connors was talented, worked hard, showed his emotions, played to the crowd.

Instead we have good players with guarenteed contracts, few offer excitement; I know I shouldn't yearn for years gone by-- that makes me old-- but I'm not hankering for the 'good ole days,'-- I saw the best, I recall the rivalrys, I KNEW the players names. I'm not sure Connors is THE OUTSIDER. I think he's the man.

Don't miss reading this, it's more than a walk down memory lane.

This is a good book. JC should be proud. He got it right.

Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout, by Lauren Redniss

In 1891, 24-year-old Marie Sklodowska moved from Warsaw to Paris, where she found work in the laboratory of Pierre Curie, a scientist engaged in research on heat and magnetism. They fell in love. They took their honeymoon on bicycles. They expanded the periodic table, discovering two new elements with startling properties, radium and polonium. They recognized radioactivity as an atomic property, heralding the dawn of a new scientific era. They won the Nobel Prize. Newspapers mythologized the couple's romance, beginning articles on the Curies with "Once upon a time . . . " Then, in 1906, Pierre was killed in a freak accident. Marie continued their work alone. She won a second Nobel Prize in 1911, and fell in love again, this time with the married physicist Paul Langevin. Scandal ensued. Duels were fought.

In the century since the Curies began their work, we've struggled with nuclear weapons proliferation, debated the role of radiation in medical treatment, and pondered nuclear energy as a solution to climate change. In Radioactive, Lauren Redniss links these contentious questions to a love story in 19th Century Paris.

Radioactive draws on Redniss's original reporting in Asia, Europe and the United States, her interviews with scientists, engineers, weapons specialists, atomic bomb survivors, and Marie and Pierre Curie's own granddaughter.

Whether young or old, scientific novice or expert, no one will fail to be moved by Lauren Redniss's eerie and wondrous evocation of one of history's most intriguing figures.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, December 2010: Lauren Redniss’s brilliant biography-in-collage is an astounding portrait of Marie and Pierre Curie, the husband-and-wife team who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. Broken into seven chapters (introduced with scientific terms that hint at the stories to come), Radioactive fuses quotes from the scientists themselves with ones from the Curies’ own granddaughter, engineering and weapons experts, and even atomic bomb survivors that form a most interesting and informative narrative. Redniss’s styling doesn’t end with the way she tells the story: Radioactive is as visually stunning as it is factually rich. She jumps from black-and-white sketches to vibrantly colored depictions of the young couple’s courtship, collaborations, and eventually Pierre’s unexpected death. Within the stark pages of the chapter titled “Isolation,” the reader feels Marie’s loss; then in “Exposure” we watch as she falls in love again--this time under more controversial circumstances. Despite personal challenges, Marie continued to be ambitious and eventually became the first female professor at the Sorbonne, winning a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In Radioactive, Redniss shows a similar determination. Through her moody, evocative collages, she captures the drama of the Curies’ lives and their contributions to science and medicine, sending the reader on a one-of-a-kind historical and biographical journey that any curious mind will appreciate. --Jessica Schein

Despite the tight quarters in his lab, Pierre Curie managed to find room for the delicate and grave foreign student. Marie Sklodowska and Pierre Curie wed on July 26, 1895. In 1900 Pierre strapped a tube of radium against his arm for ten hours. “To his joy, a lesion appeared,” reported his daughter Eve.

Review
“[An] excellent new book.” (Robert Krulwich, NPR)

“[A] sumptuously illustrated visual biography….Radioactive is an incisive look at science’s greatest partnership.” (Vogue)

“One of the most beautiful books-as-object that I’ve ever seen.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love)

“[Radioactive is] a deeply unusual and forceful thing to have in your hands. Ms. Redniss’s text is long, literate and supple…Her drawings are both vivid and ethereal…Radioactive is serious science and brisk storytelling. The word ‘luminous’ is a critic’s cliché, to be avoided at all costs, but it fits.” (New York Times)

“Radioactive is quite unlike any book I have ever read—part history, part love story, part art work and all parts sheer imaginative genius.” (Malcolm Gladwell)

“Absolutely dazzling. Lauren Redniss has created a book that is both vibrant history and a work of art. Like radium itself, Radioactive glows with energy.” (Richard Rhodes, author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb, winner of the Pulitzer Prize)

“Radioactive offer innumerable wonders. Colors suddenly bloom into tremendous feeling, history contracts into a pair of elongated figures locked in an embrace, then expands again in an explosive rush of words. In this wholly original book about passion and discovery Lauren Redniss has invented her own unique form.” (Nicole Krauss, author of The History of Love)

This book changed my life
By m.z.
This is the first review I've ever been compelled to write. I also bought "Radioactive" after reading the New York Times' glowing praise. I couldn't put it down. After I read it, I couldn't go to sleep. I promptly ordered a dozen copies for friends, and wished I had the means to buy this book for everyone I know. This book changed my perspective on art, history, science and storytelling.

First, the little things: the author created her own type based on the title pages of the New York Public Library; through evident hard work and determination, she tracked down astonishing anecdotes, photographs, gravestone rubbings, x-rays, and little known facts; the bibliography includes a breathtaking spectrum of sources, from interviews, lectures, biographies (in English and French), scientific journals, classified documents, correspondence, maps, notebooks, newspapers, scientific society proceedings; the illustrations are stunning. What unfolds on pages 83 - 85 is profoundly affecting and viscerally unforgettable. I am embarrassed by the number of superlatives in this paragraph.

Now, the big thing: this book, like the story it tells, is a miracle.

The reviewer below is entitled to his opinion. But may I offer a counterpoint. On page 94 Marie recalls a day in the meadows with her family, picking flowers. And there is an illustration of buttercups. Pages later, when Marie learns that Pierre is dead: "The flowers he had picked in the country remained fresh on the table." And then, let's say for curiosity's sake, you flip to the Notes and see this citation: "flowers...on the table." Curie Archives, microfilm, 4300.

Perhaps you will "learn" "more" from a Wikipedia article. But I have rarely encountered a book that has made me feel so strongly and care more deeply about a topic (an entire world, really) that, prior to opening the cover, I had little interest in. Buy this book at once if you are a humanist; if you know anyone -- a journalist, artist, doctor, scientist -- looking for inspiration; if you believe in the confounding collision of serendipity, discovery, destruction and love; if you've never read a graphic novel; if there is a curious young woman in your life who you suspect might one day change the world with her intellect, or desperately wishes to. This book earns and deserves the attention of those of us who live beyond Wikipedia where stories are told, hearts swell and break, the buttercups matter (No. The buttercups are essential.), and man discovers a way to make mutant roses and glowing tubes of fairy light that change the course of history.

Excessively innovative
By Mrs. Harriet Burch
I was totally unprepared for the unusual qualities of this book. The history therein, was interesting. The artwork's style, was purposeful, tho' not my style. Likewise, the font was purposeful but difficult to read. The binding of the book nearly swallowed the margins of many pages, adding to the difficult read. I'm glad I read the book, but it was not as enjoyable as I wished, but rather it was a work to achieve and a mere goal with persistence to finish the book.

Beautiful, creative and informative
By KC
Radioactive by Lauren Redniss is one of the most creative, innovative books I've ever seen. I first read about the book in an amazing review in the New York Times, then heard Ms. Redniss on the Leonard Lopate Show. I bought the book right after that based mostly on the visual appeal of the art she has created. I was even more blown away by the research and insight she writes about regarding Marie and Pierre Curie. Ms. Redniss's art coupled with the love story she tells make this much more than an art book and much more than a biography of the two. Highly recomended to people who love visually stunning books as well as those interested in love stories, science and biographies.

The Art of War: The New Translation, by Sun-Tzu, J. H. Huang

Sun-tzu's The Art of War is the classic work on strategic thinking. Throughout recorded history, Sun-tzu's wisdom, rules, and philosophy have been eagerly embraced by warriors, leaders, and gentle contemplators alike.

This edition is an entirely new text based on manuscripts discovered in Linyi, China, in 1972 that predate all previous texts by as many as one thousand years. To better convey Sun-tzu's original intent, translator, researcher, and interpreter J. H. Huang traced the roots of the language to Sun-tzu's own time—before 221 b.c. In addition to his wonderfully clear interpretation, Huang gives readers an introduction to the history behind The Art of War, includes six appendices—five of which were uncovered at Linyi and are not available in any other edition—and offers his own insightful comments on the meaning of the text.

War explained
By E. N. Anderson
Sun Wu's great classic has been deservedly circulated throughout Chinese history, printed and mass-distributed in China for centuries, and repeatedly translated. This translation by Dr. Huang is distinctive in that it uses the archaeologically discovered Linyi text, much closer in time to the original than the "received texts" known from later editions. The Linyi text reveals, more than other versions, the brilliance, subtlety, and compactness of Sun's military genius. The Vietnamese used Sun Wu ("Tzu" or "Zi" just means "master" of a teaching tradition) in their fight against the French and later against the Americans. U. S. Marine General Samuel Griffith, who did his own translation of Sun about 50 years ago, advised the US to avoid getting into war there--he saw exactly what would happen.
Of the many translations of Sun, this one is particularly good on sidenotes and endnotes, including comparisons with the standard text of later centuries (the one usually translated heretofore). I don't know enough Chinese to compare authoritatively, but this translation makes eminent good sense. Also, there are, appended to it, some rather fragmentary later texts recovered as part of the Linyi material. They include the eminently sensible point that high taxes allow arrogant rulers to amass large armies and start foolish, overreaching campaigns that ruin the country.
Anyone with an interest in Chinese civilization or with warfare really needs to read this book--possibly the most widely known and quoted Chinese classic after Confucius and Laozi. This translation deserves serious attention; I have read quite a number of translations and can recommend this one.

When Prophecy Fails: A Social and Psychological Study of A Modern Group that Predicted the Destruction of the World, by Leon Festinger, He

When Prophecy Fails: A Social and Psychological Study of a Modern Group That Predicted the Destruction of the World is a classic work of social psychology by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter which studied a small UFO religion in Chicago called the Seekers that believed in an imminent apocalypse and its coping mechanisms after the event did not occur. Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance can account for the psychological consequences of disconfirmed expectations. One of the first published cases of dissonance was reported in this book. Festinger and his associates read a story in their local newspaper headlined "Prophecy from planet Clarion call to city: flee that flood." The prophecy came from Dorothy Martin (1900–1992), a Chicago housewife who experimented with automatic writing. (In order to protect her privacy, the study gave her the alias of "Marian Keech" and relocated her group to Michigan.) She had previously been involved with L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics movement, and she incorporated ideas from what later became Scientology. The group of believers, headed by Keech, had taken strong actions to indicate their degree of commitment to the belief. They had left jobs, college, and spouses, and had given away money and possessions to prepare for their departure on a flying saucer which was to rescue the group of true believers. She claimed to have received a message from a fictional planet named Clarion. These messages revealed that the world would end in a great flood before dawn on December 21, 1954. After the failure of the prediction, she left Chicago after being threatened with arrest and involuntary commitment. She later founded the Association of Sananda and Sanat Kumara. Under the name Sister Thedra, she continued to practice channeling and to participate in contactee groups until her death in 1992. The Association is active to this day. Festinger and his colleagues saw this as a case that would lead to the arousal of dissonance when the prophecy failed. Altering the belief would be difficult, as Keech and her group were committed at considerable expense to maintain it. Another option would be to enlist social support for their belief. As Festinger wrote, "If more and more people can be persuaded that the system of belief is correct, then clearly it must after all be correct." In this case, if Keech could add consonant elements by converting others to the basic premise, then the magnitude of her dissonance following disconfirmation would be reduced. Festinger and his colleagues predicted that the inevitable disconfirmation would be followed by an enthusiastic effort at proselytizing to seek social support and lessen the pain of disconfirmation. Festinger stated that five conditions must be present if someone is to become a more fervent believer after a failure or disconfirmation: A belief must be held with deep conviction and it must have some relevance to action, that is, to what the believer does or how he or she behaves. The person holding the belief must have committed himself to it; that is, for the sake of his belief, he must have taken some important action that is difficult to undo. In general, the more important such actions are, and the more difficult they are to undo, the greater is the individual's commitment to the belief. The belief must be sufficiently specific and sufficiently concerned with the real world so that events may unequivocally refute the belief. Such undeniable disconfirmatory evidence must occur and must be recognized by the individual holding the belief. The individual believer must have social support. It is unlikely that one isolated believer could withstand the kind of disconfirming evidence that has been specified. If, however, the believer is a member of a group of convinced persons who can support one another, the belief may be maintained and the believers may attempt to proselytize or persuade nonmembers that the belief is correct.

About the Author
Leon Festinger (1919 – 1989) was an American social psychologist, perhaps best known for cognitive dissonance and social comparison theory. His theories and research are credited with renouncing the previously dominant behaviorist view of social psychology by demonstrating the inadequacy of stimulus-response conditioning accounts of human behavior. Festinger is also credited with advancing the use of laboratory experimentation in social psychology, although he simultaneously stressed the importance of studying real-life situations, a principle he perhaps most famously practiced when personally infiltrating a doomsday cult. He is also known in social network theory for the proximity effect (or propinquity). Festinger was the fifth most cited psychologist of the 20th century. Henry W. Riecken Jr. (1917-2012) received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1950, having studied in the Department of Social Relations, which enjoyed a well-known relationship with the Department of Psychology. A thought leader, and a follower and booster of interesting thoughts (more prescience), Riecken was the first director of the National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Office of Social Sciences (later called a division) in 1959. As vice president and then president of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) from 1966 to 1971, Hank led the development of the first state-of-the-art monograph on randomized controlled trials in the United States. Riecken was a member of the first Director's Advisory Committee at the National Institutes of Health. He became a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Board on Medicine in 1969 (one of two social scientists) and, as a founding member, assisted in the challenging effort to create the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1971. Stanley Schachter (1922 – 1997) was an American social psychologist, who is perhaps best known for his development of the two factor theory of emotion in 1962 along with Jerome E. Singer. In his theory he states that emotions have two ingredients: physiological arousal and a cognitive label. A person's experience of an emotion stems from the mental awareness of the body's physical arousal. Schachter also studied and published a large number of works on the subjects of obesity, group dynamics, birth order and smoking. Schachter was the seventh most cited psychologist of the 20th century.

Data nearly 50 years old, but still seems valid...
By William E. Adams
This work first saw print in 1956. It is the story of a UFO cult in a large city in the Midwest...how it developed, how the leaders recruited followers, how predictions about the coming end of the world started flowing from the psychic members who allegedly channeled messages from the spacemen/pilots. The cult members were told they would be saved, picked up by saucers on an appointed date. The members quit jobs, sold possessions, and gathered, only to be disappointed. Did they all quit in a huff? No way. The first failure only made them more determined they were right, more anxious to be ready for the next announced departure date. Then a second failure. A few members fell away, a few suffered doubts, a few challenged for leadership themselves. The point of this book is that it takes "three disconfirmations" to kill a movement of true believers, and even then, some still hang on to the discredited "theology" by grasping at excuses. I found this book by accident about 30 years ago, and have read it at least four times. I find it fascinating. In the 1970's I knew two women in Albuquerque who were amateur psychics. They started bringing forth "space brethren messages" and eventually, although they failed to attract a following, they went up into the nearby mountains one night sure they would be lifted off before the coming unspecified disaster. They waited, but no ship appeared. I think people inclined toward UFO beliefs haven't changed much since this book was published. The basic data shown in this study can apply to religious or political groups as well. I am sorry it is out of print, but if you have an interest in this field, get a used copy...the prices are reasonable and the book will not disappoint!

Interesting + Funny = A Great Read!
By Amazon Customer
It's fascinating what we humans can make ourselves believe! And frequently hilarious, too!
This is partly a study of how followers of cult movements can paradoxically become more committed even when the central tenet has been disproven. The first few chapters are fairly dry, but they move quickly and are very interesting, especially since the hypothesis is so counterintuitive.
Things really pick up once they get into the day-to-day details of the flying saucer group they've infiltrated. The group goes to extremes of self-deception to keep believing (and they want to believe so badly) that "the boys upstairs" (ie, flying saucer people) are in contact with them. The dry, scholarly tone reads as subtle dry humor when describing, for example, a woman in a suburban living room bellowing "I AM THE CREATOR" (she is supposedly "channeling" the Creator) and then complaining about the chair she is forced to sit in. I didn't expect this book to be laugh-out-loud funny but it certainly was in places.

Good read, interesting, but ethical?
By Clara Arak
I recently borrowed "When Prophecy Fails" from my psychology proffesor. I have been interested in the theory of cognitive dissonance since I first came across it in my general psychology text book, and was thrilled at the opportunity to read the source of it all.

The book is an easy read; at times it feels more like a novel than a psychological study. After the initial first few chapters of background information, it falls into an easy description of Marian Keech and her fellow Seekers. Festinger and his co-authors do a fine job of illustrating Mrs. Keech's ideology and the history of her doomsday prophecies. The description of the group members on the days leading up to and after the predicted cataclysm is very detailed.

However, this high amount of detail is also what makes me hesitant about truly endorsing this book as an ethical psychological study. Festinger & co. gave ample enough hints at the location and press coverage of the group that confidentiality cannot have been preserved. Just a few minutes with google provided me with the real identities of the cult members described in the book. Though I think the study may have been conducted before the APA created the ethical guidelines, I still found myself somewhat horrified by the looseness of the confidentiality. While "When Prophecy Fails" is an interesting read, it does very little to scientifically prove its hypothesis in a way that could not have been done in a less damaging way. Though my searches seemed to indicate that Mrs. Keech and her fellow believers moved on, I still feel a great deal of pity for the woman and her comrades. Even though their beliefs were absurd, did they really deserve to be so cruelly tricked? I am not sure about this. And so I am not sure that the means justifies the end in this particular landmark study.

Nevertheless, the book is certainly a must-read for anyone who is interested in landmark studies and the history of psychology.

Insight into the wonder of forgiveness
By Traci Stalsberg
Warm and witty, this book and its insights will free you to consider the possibilities and beauty of forgiveness. The author gave me the hope I desperately needed. He made me realize that forgiveness is not something in which we snap our fingers or make a quick, one-time decision and it's a done thing; but rather a process by which we travel through stages to reach the place where your memory is healed and you turn back the flow of pain from the past and are free again.

The four stages are: Hurt, Hate, Healing, and Coming Together. Each stage must be worked through and processed for the offended person to become truly free. At first I was a little afraid of the "hate" stage because, as a Christian, I was reluctant to admit I actually did hate the person who hurt me. But now I understand that to hate your enemy is to be completely unable to stop dwelling on the hurt they caused, and unable to wish them well. Ah-hah! That I could totally identify with and furthermore, I discovered that if I wanted the healing of forgiveness, then I must confess that this is the exact place I find myself so that I'll be able to employ the tools that will move me towards the next stage. While forgiving in itself is a simple act, it is done within a mix of complex emotions. To deny them is to sweep them under the rug where no light can reach them. Truthfully, when I started out reading this book I had hoped for a "quick fix," but Lewis Smedes has convinced me that the destination is worth the journey.

Within the pages of Forgive and Forget are many stories of real people mixed in, some with experiences so painful that you are completely inspired to follow them in the mystery of forgiving. Many of their stories are written about in chapters dealing with people who are hard to forgive. These chapters are: Forgiving The Invisible People, Forgiving People Who Do Not Care, Forgiving Ourselves, Forgiving Monsters, and Forgiving God. The chapter on Forgiving People Who Do Not Care was especially relevant to me because the woman who deeply wounded me insists she did nothing wrong. Also, if you do not know the story of Nazi concentration camp survivor and Christian author Corrie Ten Boom's crisis of forgiveness, you will be touched to read about it here as well.

Then there's Part 3, and perhaps the most affirmimg for me, which is titled, "How People Forgive." I love his words that begin this section - "Forgiving is love's revolution against life's unfairness. When we forgive, we ignore the normal laws that strap us to the natural law of getting even and, by the alchemy of love, we release ourselves from our own painful pasts. We fly over a dues-paying morality in order to create a new future out of the past's unfairness. We free ourselves from the wrong that is locked into our private histories; we unshackle our spirits from malice." This is exactly what I want! Again, by coming at this with the knowledge that we forgive "slowly," sometimes "in confusion," oftentimes "with anger left over," "a little at a time," and "freely, or not at all" helped me feel reassured that I'm on my way.

The very last section is an excellent essay on, "Why Forgive?" With convincing words he puts forth his best argument for forgiving versus hating and getting revenge. I won't go into detail here but suffice it to say that if you're thinking that maybe forgiving isn't worth your time and effort, or that another way may be better, you will be challenged within these pages. I hope then you will consider his case. In closing, contemplate these words from page 133, "When you release the wrongdoer from the wrong, you cut a malignant tumor out of your inner life. You set a prisoner free, but you discover that the real prisoner was yourself."

simple, beautiful

great book for those who have trouble forgiving. The part I found most helpful is the recognition that excusing is not forgiving. The only time forgiveness is called for is when there is no good excuse!
