AN EARLY (1965) YET STILL CHALLENGING PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY
By Steven H Propp
Kenneth Bancroft Clark (1914-2005) was an African-American psychologist who was a professor at City College of New York, and the first Black president of the American Psychological Association. He and his wife Mamie founded the Northside Center for Child Development in Harlem and the organization Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited (HARYOU). He also wrote other books such as Prejudice and Your Child, A possible reality;: A design for the attainment of high academic achievement for inner-city students, and Pathos of Power (Harper Torchbooks, Tb 1857).

He writes in the Introduction to this 1965 book, "This study of the Negro ghetto is an attempt to understand the combined problems of the confined Negro and the problems of the slum. Some of the problems of the lower class Negro are similar to and identical with the problems of poor people and slums in general. But in America, the white poor and slum dweller have the advantage of the social and psychological reality which is an essential aspect of American racism; that is, the belief that they can rise economically and escape from the slums. The Negro believes himself to be closely confined to the pervasive low status of the ghetto, and in fact usually is."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"Until the lower-class Negro is free to compete for and to win with socially acceptable rewards of middle-class society, the ghetto's pattern of venereal disease, illegitimacy, and family instability will remain unbroken. But when that time comes ... then the Negro's sexual 'misbehavior' will be indistinguishable in all respects from that of the respectables---with full participation in divorce, abortions, adultery, and the various forms of jaded and fashionable middle- and upper-class sexual explorations. There might even be the possibility of sexual fulfillment and health." (Pg. 73-74)
"The unstated and sometimes stated acceptance of crime and violence as normal for a ghetto community is associated with a lowering of police vigilance and efficiency when the victims are also lower-class people. This is another example of the denial of a governmental service---the right of adequate protection---which is endured by the powerless ghetto." (Pg. 86)
"There is a tendency toward pathology in the gilded suburban ghetto, too; an emptiness reflecting a futile struggle to find substance and worth through the concretes of things and possessions... Such persons, unlike the lower-class ghetto members, rarely seek to relieve their frustrations in overt violence against others, but succumb rather to their fate. Why, then, would members of the city's ghettos seek to embrace a pathology of the suburb in exchange for their own?" (Pg. 108)
"The use of intelligence scores to brand children for life, to determine education based upon tracks and homogeneous groupings of children, impose on our public school system an intolerable and undemocratic social hierarchy, and defeat the initial purposes of public education." (Pg. 128)
"At present, the reasons given for middle-class flight into the suburbs or into the private and parochial schools become self-fulfilling prophecies, for as whites leave the schools, the quality of the schools does indeed decline---NOT because Negroes are inferior, but because the school system behaves as though they are." (Pg. 150)
"Basically, too, the ghetto pathology includes an unwillingness to make any personal sacrifice beyond those already required by the ghetto itself. The ghetto fails to prepare one for voluntary sacrifices precisely because it demands so many involuntary ones." (Pg. 188)

A deeply penetrating psychological account
By M. PARADISO-MICHAU
Dr. Clark has struck a sensitive nerve in the consciousness of a nation in his 1965 study of black neighborhoods. Revised in 1989 with an introduction by William Julius Wilson, and a foreword by Gunnar Myrdal, it is apparent that other scholars respect Clark's work as well. I was particularly impressed by the self-honesty of his methodology -- he calls it his "involved observer" method, which shows much more concern for the subjects of the study than traditional "disinterested observer" approaches, espoused by so-called "value-free" social scientists. Also recommended are other books by Clark, and most anything by Cornel West, Lewis R. Gordon, Allen Spear, and Alex Kotlowitz. A related book to "Dark Ghetto" is "Racism & Psychiatry," by Alexander Thomas and Samuel Sillen, with an introduction by K. Clark.
