The New Revised Standard Version is the translation used by mainline Protestant churches, Orthodox churches, and by many Catholics. The New Revised Standard Version is recognized in scholarly circles as the most accurate translation into English of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. In the tradition of its predecessors, the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, the NRSV was designed to be the “standard” version for English-speaking people across all denominations, which in many ways it has become. None of the new, more sectarian translations have approached its standards of elegance and accuracy.

An ideal Bible for wearied eyes

I told myself I would never buy another English Bible, but when I saw this new edition of the NRSV upon its release I knew I had found my next Bible for devotional reading. The NRSV is still the English translation of choice (I say this as a Professor of New Testament and Greek) in terms of the breadth and excellence of translators involved, the avoidance of certain problematic renderings (e.g., resolving "the faith of Christ" as "faith in Christ," as in the NIV), and the attentiveness to inclusive language (though I would have retained the use of kinship language for "brothers" everywhere as "brothers and sisters" rather than "believers," "beloved," or the like). The print layout is superb, and the binding seems sturdy and lays open very well. I would highly recommend choosing THIS edition over the edition lacking the Apocrypha or the "Catholic Edition," which includes most of the Apocrypha but lacks, for example, 3 and 4 Maccabees (included here), essential texts for understanding tensions facing Diaspora Judaism and some of the responses formulated by the faithful to address those tensions. Readers who want access to maps and study helps can still use the aids in the back of the smaller print Bible that they, like me, can't read so well anymore. :) Regarding the appearance, the image shows the Bible as it comes in a cardboard wrap: the front cover is actually solid tan (or solid burgundy, depending on which edition you're viewing).

An Excellent Edition of the NRSV

This excellent edition of the NRSV is a pleasure to read. In addition to large type, it is printed on paper that has minimal bleed-through (unlike the regular-sized HarperCollins edition of the NRSV with Apocrypha) and reflects considerably less light than most Bible paper. This Bible spreads out easily (even when opened to pages at the beginning or end of the Bible) and the text does not tend to disappear near the spine -- a problem I have had with some Bibles.
I highly recommend this edition.

It is about time!

Love the size of the print, love the shape of the book - fits easy in your lap, has room to make notes. The square shape makes it less thick and easier to work with. No one has done a better job than Metzger in putting this translation together. If you have had trouble reading the smaller print and do not want all of the footnotes - you will not be disappointed.
