“Daheim writes with wit, wisdom, and a big heart."
 Carolyn Hart

Cormac McCarthy has nothing on Mary Daheim—whose fabulous Bed-and-Breakfast mysteries win hands down when it comes to outrageous zaniness. In All the Pretty Hearses, Daheim,“the reigning queen of the cozies” (Portland Oregonian), embroils Hillside Manor hostess Judith McMonigle Flynn in a lethal case of insurance fraud and mystery meat gone bad, in the twenty-sixth installment of the hilarious, New York Times bestselling cozy mystery series that remains as fresh and funny as the very first.

From the Back Cover

There's no "fun" in "fund-raiser" for Judith McMonigle Flynn when she donates an overnight stay at Hillside Manor, dinner included, to the parish school's annual auction—especially when the winning bid goes to the persnickety Paine family. She'll have her hands full sorting through the painfully picky Paines' endless allergies and aversions. Then hubby Joe lands in jail after his latest surveillance job abruptly ends with an insurance fraud suspect being blown away by a .38 Smith & Wesson . . . that just happens to belong to Joe.

But finding the real killer and dealing with the Paines' pain are just the tip of the iceberg—what with Judith's cantankerous mother, Gertrude, agreeing to let a wealthy parishioner stable a horse in her toolshed apartment; cousin Renie trying to force-feed her loathsome Shrimp Dump recipe to the parish cookbook fund-raising committee; and a number of parish school kids falling sick after their weekly hamburger lunch.

About the Author

Mary Richardson Daheim is a Seattle native with a communications degree from the University of Washington. Realizing at an early age that getting published in books with real covers might elude her for years, she worked on daily newspapers and in public relations to help avoid her creditors. She lives in her hometown in a century-old house not unlike Hillside Manor, except for the body count. Daheim is also the author of the Alpine mystery series, the mother of three daughters, and has three grandchildren.

Not her best work ...
By L. Kirk
I have been a Mary Daheim fan for quite awhile and usually enjoy the adventures of her main character, Judith Flynn. Judith owns a B&B with her husband Joe and has a high-spirited, spunky mother who lives in an in-law suite behind the B&B. Her gal Friday on her adventures is her hot-tempered cousin, Renie, who adds a nice counterpoint to Judith's rather easygoing temperament.

All The Pretty Hearses starts off with Joe being arrested for a murder, so one would assume that the action would center around this event. However, most of the book's content is devoted to a string of sub-plots that disorient the reader rather than truly forward the action in a meaningful way. Compared to earlier books in the series, this book seemed to also lack rich descriptions of people and place. Although I found the numerous sub-plots and the confusingly large cast of characters frustrating, I still think that, for those who have read earlier books in the series, this adventure will be worth the price of admission.

If you are new to Daheim's work and unfamiliar with her main characters, I would encourage you to get books earlier in the series before reading this one. It is easier to follow the action if you have a history with the people and places in the series.

Convoluted and Humorous
By N. Wallach
The Bed and Breakfast business is slow in January and it helps the financial situation when your husband is working a case as a private investigator. But all that takes a strange turn when that husband is arrested under suspicion of committing a murder that involves the investigation he was involved in. However, no matter how slow running a Bed and Breakfast is at this time of year, people do show up, and they do expect to be taken care of. So, Judy Flynn is busy running her inn and catering to her customers. In the case of this book, these customers are amongst the most bizarre collection you could ever want. Not only that, but there are obviously all kinds of connections between the guests that are being kept under the surface and hidden. But do any of those connections have anything to do with the murder case?

Things get busier and busier at the inn and Judith Flynn has her hands full keeping order in the house and dealing with the strange goings-on. She really has no time to sleuth around but still manages to get involved in various sordid dealings. Then, her cousin calls up with her own crises; her mother is her normal irascible self; and a local reporter shows up to help. Or does he?

Eventually, all the craziness and mayhem is resolved and we see how all the various parties were involved and what their roles were. The solution takes into account all the strange things and is somewhat reasonable and logical - and could not have been guessed at by anyone before the end of the book!

I really enjoyed this book. Not only because of how convoluted the plot was; nor did it have solely to do with the fact that most of the loose threads were tied together at the end; but mostly because of the way the author describes the mayhem and the people who are involved. While there were too many people to really dig deeply into them, she still has a way of bringing them forward in such a way that you could imagine people just like them from your own personal acquaintances. Another major selling point for me was that the book was written in a humorous way. Not slapstick, but enough funny things were going on or being said that I frequently found myself with a smile on my face as I was reading the book.

The writing itself is fluid and easy to ready. This book did not take me too long to get through, but that could also have been due to my not wanting to put it down! When each chapter ended, it was at an interesting point in the plot that had you wanting to just swing over to the next chapter and continue. In other words, this was a fun book to read and that is why it is getting five stars. Enjoy.

All the Pretty Horses
By Isabelle Jolly
If you like clever mysteries without gore, you'll enjoy this book. It is one of a series, but stands alone. It's the kind of book that keeps you wanting to find out what's going to happen.

Judith McMonigle Flynn is panicked! She had donated a dinner and overnight stay at her Bed & Breakfast Inn for a fund raiser. A family appropriately named Paine had won. She was called and told that the various members had allergies, didn't like stuff, etc. (She decided on a buffet, with each dish labeled as to content.)

Her ex-cop husband, Joe, has been arrested because the person he was protecting was killed with his gun.

Her mother had answered the phone and when asked if a horse could be put in the garage! She took it as a prank call and said sure. A horse is now in the garage.

She's fretting about an episode of 24 hour sickness affecting several children in school. Flu, food poisoning?

The Beard-Smythes called and told her that their heat was out and asked if she had a room. They showed up with their dog. She didn't allow dogs, but made an exception. Bathrooms were between two bedrooms which shared it. She found the dog sleeping in the bathtub! The next time she checked the second bedroom, the dog was sleeping on the bed!

Another woman checked in, said she didn't want to be disturbed as she was preparing for a conference. Sneaked out without saying good-bye. Soon after, she rec'd a phone call from a woman who said that her bag had been stolen while she was shopping and that the bag had been found in a dumpster. It had a receipt and two keys from the B&B. She was close, and would bring them over. When she arrived, she looked lot like the woman who had used her ID and credit card. Another mystery!

The dinner for the Paines was not successful. They argued and sniped at one another, and finally left without staying the night. It turns out that their mother had hoped that dining together might bring them together.

In the meantime, she's frantic with worry about Joe. All the police are friends, but she can't find out anything.

Judith has a reputation for solving mysteries. Read the book. You'll really enjoy it.
