About the Author
Noted poet Lee Bennett Hopkins has edited or authored numerous books for children, including the I Can Read Books Hamsters, Shells, and Spelling Bees; A Pet for Me: Poems; and the ALA Notable Children's Book Surprises. The recipient of a Christopher Award and the University of Southern Mississippi's Medallion for "lasting contributions to children's literature," Mr. Hopkins lives in Florida.
Barry Gott is the illustrator of more than thirty children's books, including Dino-Hockey and the Horace Splattly series. Also a greeting-card designer and frequent magazine contributor, Barry lives with his wife, kids, and many pets in Cleveland, Ohio.

Silly dinosaur poems for young readers to enjoy

Most kids - especially boys - love dinosaurs, making books on the subject particularly appealing to young readers. This collection of twenty short and silly dinosaur poems, collected by Lee Bennett Hopkins and presented alongside the bright and colorful illustrations of Barry Gott, serves that purpose well for the most part. To me, the inclusion of so many actual dinosaur names is a bit problematic, as even well-schooled parents will find themselves tripping over the pronunciation of such words as Acrocanthosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, and Pachycepholosaurus. There is a guide on the proper pronunciation of all these dinosaur names included, but still, these words go way beyond the reading level assigned to this book (Level 2 in the I Can Read categorizations, which basically means this book is designed for developing readers who may still need some help from their parents). The poems themselves are indeed short and silly, so most kids in the 4-6 age group will probably find them fun and giggle-worthy. And if they don't giggle at the poems themselves, they no doubt will enjoy a few snickers at their parents' struggles to pronounce all of the dinosaur names for them.

Disappointing poems

My 3 year old likes it. Doesn't love it, but thinks that the illustrations are particularly cute. (The book, while a collection of poems, progresses as if the dinosaurs are going to school.) Problem is that the poems just aren't very good. Some don't flow smoothly and the content simply isn't that interesting. Yes, this does include the dinosaur names - those get worked into most of the poem text (something like "I'm a saltopus" or "The t-rex is a bully.") - but that's about it as far as being unusual or educational. (With one, two dinosaurs take a bath; in another, the post-bath lotion gets stolen. Heck, even in the last one, the unruly dinosaurs, who didn't listen to the rules that they were given, end up falling into a mud/tar pit, as if not listening means that you'd die? I don't mean to say that the last poem is that literal, but when I got to that last one, I did a "wait, wut?") Something is just off with this one; imo, skip it.
