Great Sequel for Urban Fantasy Vampire Fans (B+ Grade)
By Katie Babs
Cat is back and One Foot in the Grave is one of the best sequels I have read in a long time. Jeaniene Frost has written a new super-heroine that can play as dirty as the boys and won't take the injustices of life sitting down. The only other character I can compare her to in recent memory are Anita Blake from Laurel K. Hamilton or Eve Dallas from JD Robb.
One Foot in the Grave takes place four years into the future. Cat is no longer that naive, uncontrollable girl with a chip on her shoulder. Cat has grown into a sharp and intelligent woman who still kicks butt and comes up with the best comebacks and one-liners you can imagine. Cat is still a bit down on herself in terms of self-esteem and still thinks of herself as an outcast. She has become the head of an undercover group that works for the government. Even though she was basically blackmailed into taking this position, she has fought very hard to be in control and the "go to" person in almost every situation that arises.
Cat is half-human, half-vampire, and the department she works for is comparable to Homeland Security but for watching and experimenting on vampires. The powers that be want to know where vampires come from and how they can be stopped. In Halfway to the Grave, Cat hated her vampire side, now she is more comfortable in her skin and embraces it in a way. And the reason she does is due to her vampire lover she had to leave behind, Bones.
Cat has a hard time giving and receiving love, but when it came to Bones she was a goner. Cat has a lot of questions about her lost love. Has Bones wandered the world looking for her? Has he totally forgotten her and gone onto another lonely girl? Could Bones be dead? All these questions will be answered in ways you will not believe! I guess you can say it is not much of a spoiler since Cat and Bones are the ultimate couple, so you can expect to see him make an appearance. And with his appearance, Cat is yet again launched in uncharted waters. Bones may come across as a witty playboy type of guy, but he has great insight on a person.
One Foot in the Grave has quite a few twists and gasps that I did not see coming. Every thing comes out with a bang and you will meet some over the top characters that will make you laugh till your stomach hurts. And, the other thing Jeaniene can do very well is write a good quality love scene.
One Foot in the Grave is an excellent, paranormal urban fantasy that did not disappoint in the least. Jeaniene tightened up certain problems I had with Halfway to the Grave and wrote a story that is fast and furious.
One not to be missed!

From Publishers Weekly
McBrien's outspoken media commentaries on Catholic polity and pronouncements have earned him a loyal following and not a few critics. A theology professor at the University of Notre Dame, he has written 25 books including Catholicism, a 1,344-page theological survey. His newest study looks at one branch of theology, ecclesiology, which he defines as theological reflection on the nature, mission, ministries, and structures of the Church. In good academic fashion, McBrien organizes his material thoroughly, with frequent introductions, summaries, lists and cross-references that make this an ideal textbook. At the same time, he writes clearly and passionately on topics of general concern such as papal authority, the church's social and political involvement, interfaith relations and the role of the laity. An ardent admirer of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), McBrien sets its documents and discussions at the heart of his presentation. Much of the rest of the book, including one breathless 30-page romp through 18 centuries, is either historical context for the Council or a discussion of its effects on the contemporary church. From the Back Cover

From the struggles of the very first Christians to the challenges and scandals of today, the Catholic Church has wrestled with how to organize itself, express its beliefs, and nurture its members. The Church has grown from a handful of disciples in the first century to over one billion members in the twenty-first, resulting in profound changes that demand a theological response. In this sweeping history, renowned scholar Richard McBrien reveals the evolution of the Church's relationship to the divine, its leadership of the faithful, and its role as a global religion. The Church answers the questions raised by this extraordinary history, including:

  • Where did the idea of the pope's infallibility come from?
  • Why are priests celibate and women barred from the priesthood?
  • What inspired the Inquisition?
  • What was the position of the Catholic Church on Hitler's policies in World War II?
  • What is the Church's relationship to Islam?
  • How will the growth of the Church in South America, Africa, and Asia shape its future?

McBrien helps the reader understand the evolution of the Catholic Church's understanding of itself through the centuries, its leadership, and its relationship to national governments and world religions. From Jesus's apostle Peter to Pope Benedict XVI, The Church explains in layperson's terms the evolution of the Catholic Church, its power, its scope, its theology, and its influence.

OUR ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH's EVOLUTION AS REPORTED BY ONE OF OUR FINEST PRIESTS AND SCHOLARS WRITING TODAY
By Love Thy Enemy
The Reverend Father Richard P. McBrien, a Roman Catholic priest of the Hartford Archdiocese and for several decades a scholar and professor of theology at the Roman Catholic University of Notre Dame (Home of the Fighting Irish) was himself educated at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He has served as President of the Catholic Theological Society of America, and is the respected and accepted author of several academic reference works on Catholicism, as well as popular books for the Faithful and the curious. He has also long written his column popular in several diocesan newspapers across the nation, and which may also now be read at NCRonline. His latest column discusses the hierarchy under Pope Leo the Great, whose feast we now celebrate.

Among his better known publications are the essential The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism, for which he served as editor-in-chief and sort of symphonic conductor, drawing together countless experts in their fields to submit items to this excellent Encyclopedia. The articles range from a few lines long to several pages in length and cover nearly every imaginable aspect of the Roman Catholic Church, religion, rituals, etc.

Another, simpler presentation may be his Inside Catholicism (Signs of the sacred) for which he wrote the text to this moving series of photographs of several aspects of the Catholic Church, and excellent gift for anyone from the curious, to the convert, to the newly confirmed to the cradle Catholic. Even the cafeteria Catholic may find full conversion here. He is also greatly appreciated for his comprehensive Lives of the Saints: From Mary and St. Francis of Assisi to John XXIII and Mother Teresa as well as his Lives of the Popes - reissue: The Pontiffs from St. Peter to Benedict XVI which has been updated to include the current papacy. These works are also available in pocket format.

This great Professor of Catholic Theology, the Reverend Father Richard P. McBrien, is also well known for his most widely used text: Catholicism: New Study Edition--Completely Revised and Updated which serves so well seminarians and others eager to enter more deeply the essence of our Faith.

Here in this most recent work we gratefully receive Father McBrien's study of our ecclesiology, beginning with our infant church and the struggles of the very first Christians through the challenges we face now as pilgrim Church in this new millennium. As the subtitle states, within this 500 page book Father McBrien traces our evolution as a community, as one family, as Roman Catholic Church, as a People of God.

Father McBrien as ever does not shirk the hard questions and scandals and embarrassing developments of our past and present, ever hopeful for our future. He examines the origins, for instance of the Inquisition, and the Vatican's position during World War II. He reveals the history of the celibate clergy and the male priesthood. He shows the Church's relationship to Islam. He marks the growth of the Roman Catholic Church in South America, Asia and in Africa, and the effects both upon those regions as well as upon the Church herself.

This is a truly scholarly work; it is not Catholicism for Dummies. It is not The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Catholicism. There are not graphic illustrations, no cartoons, not even historical photographs and sketches of the kind which so fully inform the HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism. This is an academic text of a serious subject: our ecclesiology.

What is Church? How did we get here? Where are we going? Through the careful and prayerful meditation and study of this great book we may come to understanding of these questions.

The Reverend Father Daniel J. Harrington, SJ, Professor of New Testament Studies in the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry calls this work "a remarkably successful blend of Biblical and historical learning and wise insights from a distinguished Catholic theologian. There is no better guide to recent developments in ecclesiology than McBrien."

The Foreword is written by the renowned past President of Notre Dame, the Reverend Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC, who writes: "There is simply no other comprehensive, systematic ecclesiology available to general readers or to students and teachers who focus their attention and study on the mystery and mission of the Church (p. xv)." Father Hesburgh alludes to the work of Cardinal Yves Congar, to whom Father McBrien dedicates this book, and mentions why "Pere Congar" did not write a similar massive tome despite his frequently expressed desire. Father Hesburgh adds: "Fortunately, his devoted disciple has now done that for him and has, in the spirit of filial piety, dedicated the book to his esteemed mentor." Father Hesburgh draws his long and helpful Foreword to a close, declaring: " . . .I have no hesitation at all in warmly recommending this book to a wide and religiously diverse audience, whether in universities, colleges, and seminaries, or in
parish and diocesan adult education programs, or in the more advanced high-school programs and especially high-school teachers of religion. Whether used as a course text or as a personal resource, 'The Church' will serve the Christian Community well for many years to come."

I can add no more than this distinguished Catholic priest and scholar whom Father McBrien served so well so long. All Catholics do well to read this book carefully in its eight parts. No Catholic does well to condemn our greatest theologians without having examined carefully this evidence of their devotion to our Church, and the false standards by which they are so often cruelly and ignorantly judged. This faithful representation of our Church deserves the most caring attention of all who truly love our Church with all of our heart, mind and soul. Father McBrien more fully and wisely presents the issues involved in his Preface and in his Introduction; study them carefully before drawing your conclusions about a book you have not read. More fully you will come to knowing and loving our Holy Mother Church, by the careful study of this great Catholic work.

As I read more deeply this book, I pray that so shall you too!

Scholarship to be enjoyed
By W. Joseph
One always expects Richard McBrien's books to be well organized and readable. THE CHURCH is a perfect example. It is a reference book that can be enjoyed as much as a history filled with the interesting people who influenced events. The book's organization makes it easy to choose at what level of detail you wish to read without interruption. He handles controversial subjects in a dispassionate and matter-of-fact way which is refreshing. This book helps put the Church of the 21st century into proper perspective.

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime?

These may not sound like typical questions for an econo-mist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much-heralded scholar who studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to sports and child-rearing—and whose conclusions turn conventional wisdom on its head.

Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an admittedly freakish quality. Thus the new field of study contained in this book: freakonomics.

Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Levitt and Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. In Freakonomics, they explore the hidden side of . . . well, everything. The inner workings of a crack gang. The truth about real-estate agents. The myths of campaign finance. The telltale marks of a cheating schoolteacher. The secrets of the Klu Klux Klan.

What unites all these stories is a belief that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and—if the right questions are asked—is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking.

Freakonomics establishes this unconventional premise: If morality represents how we would like the world to work, then economics represents how it actually does work. It is true that readers of this book will be armed with enough riddles and stories to last a thousand cocktail parties. But Freakonomics can provide more than that. It will literally redefine the way we view the modern world.

Fantastic read... A must for every adult
By Solitaryreflection
Ohhhhhhh.... I loved, loved, loved reading this one. It's just so practical.
Actually there is a chapter in the book about, what to look for, when, buying a house. The author says a potential homebuyer, looking up at the new home listings on the Internet, should eliminate the adjectives, such 'fantastic', 'marvelous', 'charming' etc describing the house, neighborhood or some parts of both. I actually used this criteria to select the house that we bought and I have not regretted a bit.

I would actually urge readers to buy this book and take time to read through it because it really, really helps. Besides it is a brilliant read.

From the Back Cover

Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz encounters bridezilla—and murder—in another delectable novel by the New York Times bestselling author of Sweet Revenge, Dark Tort, and Double Shot

Cynics say getting married is a death wish. . . .

It's been a long, rainy summer for Goldy Schulz, who is engaged in planning wedding receptions for what seems to be all of Aspen Meadow. It's bad enough that Billie Attenborough, the bride from hell, has changed her menu six times and the event date twice. Now she wants to move the location to the Gold Gulch Spa just a scant two days before tying the knot to her doctor fiancé.

Then Doc Finn, beloved local physician and the best friend of Goldy's godfather, Jack, is killed when his car tumbles into a ravine. At least that's what appears to have happened. But Jack thinks Doc was murdered because of the research he was doing at the spa—allegations that are confirmed when Jack himself is attacked.

So Goldy dons chef's whites and goes undercover at the spa, where coffee is outlawed in favor of calming smoothies, and the fruit cocktail doesn't include fresh fruit. Add in the obstreperous owner, who years ago tried to sabotage Goldy's fledgling business, and she's got her hands full.

Above all, there seems to be a clever killer on the spa grounds, watching her every move. After what befell Jack, Goldy knows that she might be next. Catering weddings, and cooking low-fat food, could be killing her—literally.

Getting tired...
By GM
I've always loved this series, but the last couple books have been a disappointment. There's always a few things you can count on - there will be one or more really hateful characters, Goldy will get hit on the head and knocked unconscious at some point, Goldy will hide evidence from the police, and you'll be told over and over how many shots of espresso Goldy drinks at any given time. I understand if the author writes these books so you don't need to have read the books that came before it, but I'm starting to feel like I'm reading the same thing over and over, and the plot/mystery is just filler. I won't buy anymore of this series in hardcover, it's just not worth it. I'll wait for the paperback, or check the books out at the library.

By C. Resko
It is a murder mystery after all! Cute, funny, warm and keeps interest. Even has great recipes in it from the catering that is done in the book.

Always a good read
By LEW
Davidson is very good at weaving the mystery with the character development. In this one, the cast was smaller so it was easier to follow.

Jonah's Gourd Vine: A Novel, by Zora Neale Hurston

Jonah's Gourd Vine, Zora Neale Hurston's first novel, originally published in 1934, tells the story of John Buddy Pearson, "a living exultation" of a young man who loves too many women for his own good. Lucy, his long-suffering wife, is his true love, but there's also Mehaley and Big 'Oman, as well as the scheming Hattie, who conjures hoodoo spells to ensure his attentions. Even after becoming the popular pastor of Zion Hope, where his sermons and prayers for cleansing rouse the congregation's fervor, John has to confess that though he is a preacher on Sundays, he is a "natchel man" the rest of the week. And so in this sympathetic portrait of a man and his community, Zora Neale Hurston shows that faith, tolerance, and good intentions cannot resolve the tension between the spiritual and the physical. That she makes this age-old dilemma come so alive is a tribute to her understanding of the vagaries of human nature.

One of the best books I have ever read
By Kharabella
I always thought of Toni Morrison as the leader, the queen, and the matriarch of black women's fiction, but the more I read of Zora Neale Hurston, the more I feel that everyone else must have taken their cues from her!

Her writing is enchanting and thought provoking, her use of "black" language is absolutely delightful. The story and the characters are interesting in and of themselves. What makes this work really shine is the language, and the heritage and history that it preserves. She takes care to write the way that people speak, resulting a unorthodox spelling and usage that at first I had to say out loud in order to properly understand. (My grandmother didn't have to do that, though, and for that reason alone, she loved Zora Hurston.) Ms. Hurston also uses words, idioms and phrases that are unique to black america, and that my generation would likely have lost -- the news of the "Black Dispatch," "Old Hannah" rising, "hittin' a straight lick with a crooked stick." Some of the sayings I remember my Grandmother using, and some I remember using as a child. I found all of them interesting and beautiful, and I am grateful to Ms. Hurston for finding them valuable enough to put down.

A solid debut by the author of "Their Eyes Were Watching God"
By Darryl R. Morris
So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceedingly glad of the gourd. But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

Jonah 4:5-11

Hurston's first novel, published in 1934, is a fictionalized account of the lives of her parents set in the post-Reconstruction South to the years that followed the First World War. The title refers to the Biblical prophet, who cared more about the death of the gourd vine that sheltered him from the sun than the people of the nearby town of Nineveh, who were at risk of annihilation at the hand of God.

John Crittenden is born out of wedlock in post-Reconstruction Alabama to Amy, who later marries Ned, a sharecropper and embittered former slave who constantly butts heads with the strapping "high yaller" boy who isn't his own. Weary of the abuse and threats of his stepfather, John travels to a nearby farm to work, and meets Lucy, a younger girl who he falls in love with and ultimately marries. However, John is a strong and handsome man who is desired by many women, and he takes full advantage of this, to the detriment of his wives and young children. The aftermath of one affair nearly lands him on a chain gang, and he escapes to Florida, where he eventually moves to Eatonville, one of the first all-black towns in the Deep South. After working as a carpenter and sending for his family he eventually becomes a gifted preacher, who is in high demand in neighboring towns. However, he has not lost his taste for the flesh despite his love of the Spirit, and the problems that caused him to flee Alabama come to haunt him and his family in Florida.

I enjoyed this debut effort by Hurston, with its rich characters and compelling story.

From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her Island, by Lorna Goodison

When Doris Harvey's English grandfather, William Harvey, discovers a clearing at the end of a path cut by the feet of those running from slavery, he gives his name to what will become his family's home for generations. For Doris, Harvey River is the place she always called home, the place where she was one of the "fabulous Harvey girls," and where the rich local bounty of Lucea yams, pimentos, and mangoes went hand in hand with the Victorian niceties of her parents' house. It is a place she will return to in dreams when her fortunes change, years later, and she and her husband, Marcus Goodison, relocate to "hard life" Kingston and encounter the harsh realities of urban living in close quarters.

In Lorna Goodison's luminous memoir of her forebears, we meet a cast of wonderfully drawn characters, including George O'Brian Wilson, the Irish patriarch of the family who marries a Guinea woman after coming to Jamaica in the mid-1800s; Doris's parents, Margaret and David, childhood sweethearts who become the first family of Harvey River; and Margaret and David's eight children.

In lush, vivid prose, textured with the cadences of Creole speech, Lorna Goodison weaves together memory and mythology to create a vivid tapestry. She takes us deep into the heart of a complete world to tell a universal story of family and the ties that bind us to the place we call home.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Goodison, an acclaimed poet who received Jamaica's Musgrave Gold Medal in 1999, makes lyrical exposition sing with dulcet island patois in this homage to her mother, Doris, who grew up in the sleepy Eden-like setting of Harvey River, but raised her own nine children in urban Kingston under less coddled conditions. Starting on a supernal note, in which Doris bequeaths this book to her daughter in a dream, the memoir draws a richly textured portrait of a sprawling, well-to-do family, including seven strong-willed siblings with deftly sketched personas. As plump and pretty as a ripe ox-heart tomato, Doris—whose Anglo-African blood attests to Jamaica's history of interracial dalliance—joins her sisters in the clique of fabulous Harvey girls, their surnames trumpeting the family's landed-gentry status. But it's a working-class chauffeur—the author's father—who wins Doris's hand in marriage. Borne away from her childhood idyll, she takes in her first moving picture, produces a succession of offspring and plies her domestic skills, especially sewing, gamely weathering the vicissitudes of life outside paradise. Steeped in local lore and spiced with infectious dialect and ditties, Goodison's memoir reaches back over generations to evoke the mythic power of childhood, the magnetic tug of home and the friction between desire and duty that gives life its unexpected jolts. The Fabulous Harvey Girls
By Dera R Williams
Poet and college professor Lorna Goodison brings a heartwarming story of family life and community in the memoir of her beloved birthplace, Jamaica, in From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her Island. Goodison's great-grandfather, Englishman William Harvey, and his brother founded and built the community of Harvey River in 1840. William married Frances Duhaney, despite being told that black women were acceptable as concubines but not as wives. Their son, David, was a self-taught lawyer, who served his village for many years acting as legal counsel. His daughter, Doris, Goodison's mother, was one of the "fabulous Harvey Girls."

The five Harvey sisters benefited from their family name; they were respected in the community and were expected to conduct themselves as ladies at all times. One time Doris was bathing in the river and a young man visiting from another town did not give her the privacy required. Well, that young man was called upon by David Harvey, Doris' father, and her brothers, at his relatives' home, and made to understand that the Harvey girls were held in high esteem. When they went into the main town of Lucea, all the young men turned out to gaze upon and win the charms of the sisters. Their maternal grandfather was an Irishman who later came to live with the family in his later years and one of their grandmothers was a Guinea woman who was said to have mystical powers. Such an illustrious ancestral background made for much family folklore, superstitions and unity.

For awhile after Doris married Marcus Goodison, life was good, but when the author was a young girl in the 1930s, the family's fortunes turned and they were forced to move to Kingston to find work. Being in a big city as Kingston was an adjustment for Doris and her status as a Harvey was of no consequence. She was just another poor, young wife and mother trying to keep food on the table and raise her children. Her strength of character, however, would not allow her to give up. She became sought after for her excellent seamstress skills and she was the community mother and mentor to many children. Her children thrived and Lorna, the author, has wonderful memories of a special summer with her grandmother at Harvey River.

This memoir was rich with tradition and beautiful detail. I could see the women washing clothes in the Harvey River and taste the Lucea yams melting in my mouth. Goodison's poetic writing brought the cadence of the language and mannerisms of the people of Harvey River to life. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy memoirs and especially love reading about different cultures of the Black Diaspora. Rating 4.5

Engaging Memoir
By Melissa S.
Ms. Goodison manages to do what a great many writers hope to do but seldom achieve - produce work that is illuminating and engaging. This is a beautifully written book filled with rich, authentic descriptions of Jamaican life and offers an often candid view of her family and people. As such, whether you are from the Caribbean or not, I think that readers will be able to relate to the more universal themes of love, loss, triumph and growth and will become personally invested in Ms. Goodison's story.

In addition, Harvey River provides a great historical context in terms of geography and social mores of that country and I learned a great deal. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and intend to share with my friends and family. Well done!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Invited by editor Laura Geringer to write about "a single night that matters"-about a character kept up all night and transformed by his or her vigil-six authors contribute six stunning stories. Varied in form and content, these entries share a confident, assured pace; the authors know how to build characters and settings, and they do not cut corners. Abrahams, for example, begins "Phase 2" as a girl describes her family's preparations for her father's homecoming from the Iraq war. At the expected hour, however, it is not the father who arrives but a lieutenant and a chaplain; the girl's mother turns white, "the color of a corpse in the movies." This dramatic but controlled setup leads to an emotionally nuanced encounter between the grieving mother and a medium, with the narrator and her younger brother crossing the most unexpected of barriers. The other stories, including Bray's '70s-era "Not Just for Breakfast Anymore," about a girl coming to terms with her father's recently announced gay identity; Patricia McCormick's "Orange Alert," in which a 15-year-old short-circuits an abusive relationship; and Gene Luen Yang's graphic-novel format "The Motherless One," featuring a chimp searching for "some small sign that... someone wanted me to exist," are equally complex and surprising. Of special interest: the publisher is sponsoring a story contest for teens. Ages 12-up.

Only because I'm not a fan of Anthologies
By Rachael Stein
In this anthology, six phenomenal authors answer the question "What would keep you up all night?" The authors are Peter Abrahams, Libba Bray, David Levithan, Patricia McCormick, Sarah Weeks, and Gene Luen Yang.

At first, I thought this book would contain personal stories from these authors, but I soon realized they were fictional short stories. My favorite of the six had to be Libba Bray's short story about a group of four friends who go to a rock concert. Libba Bray, the author of the Great and Terrible Beauty series, is an amazing author. Out of the six stories, hers was the longest and most enjoyable one for me to read.

I also enjoyed the stories by David Levithan and Patricia McCormick. David's story was a little confusing and pointless at first, but I liked the ending. Patricia's story was just plain creepy until the ending, which was hilarious. Sarah Week's story was the saddest. And the other two were okay, but nothing something I would remember for a long time.

I have to say I had my doubts about reading this book because I'm not usually a fan of anthologies. I would say that this book is only okay; it's not something I would rush out to buy.

A powerful collection of stories from brilliant authors
By Teen Reads
In her introduction to this fine short story collection, editor Laura Geringer says, "I hope you enjoy these unusual tales, as I have, and that whatever you select to take from them stays with you for many days and night to come, waking and dreaming."

Six great writers equal six fantastic short stories in this flawless collection of tales dealing with encounters of the world of sleepless nights. From Peter Abrahams's poignant and ghostly "Phase 2" to the zany appearance in "The Motherless One" of the monkey from Gene Luen Yang's AMERICAN BORN CHINESE, each story has a different twist for situations that people encounter as they skip sleep and struggle through the night.

Libba Bray, author of A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY, offers "Not Just for Breakfast Anymore." Teenager Maggie is trying to adjust to her parents' divorce. But it's not just the divorce --- it's her mother's endless empty chatter and her father's new lifestyle. She can never share with her friends that her father is gay and actually living with his partner. Her shame and confusion are drowned out for a short while one night when she and friends Diane, Justine and Holly go out to see a band. The band never shows and they all get a little drunk, find themselves in some potentially dangerous situations and, ultimately, end up at her father's condo. Seeing her father in a different light and knowing that, despite all the pain, she has a safe haven where she and her friends can be themselves, turns out to be a revelation. It is a night of growing up for Maggie.

Patricia McCormick, noted author of CUT and SOLD, presents "Orange Alert," the story of a young girl trying to deal with a stepfather who is getting too familiar with her. She spends her nights giving herself driving lessons. Feeling herself developing an independent power, she eventually puts Ed/stepfather in his place. With her new sense of self-confidence, you know this is one girl who will make positive changes.

In "Superman Is Dead," Sarah Weeks explores the tender relationship between Nick and his little brother Joe. During the night Nick works on a short story for class, calling back and forth, sharing insights with his friend. The real drama, however, centers on the fading life of Joe's beloved hamster, Superman. Nick worries about how to deal with Superman when a call from his dad announcing that his new wife has had a baby (there are definitely issues to deal with here) also includes a helpful suggestion on what to do with the hamster. The night is long and painful for Nick, for Superman and for the emotional strings that twist around Nick's heart. This is a sad, enlightening and tender story whose rich characters could easily move into a book.

David Levithan's wonderful "The Vulnerable Hours" explores issues of loneliness and the superficiality of so many conversations. Phil wanders around during the night asking strangers "What's up?" until he finds Sara, who begins an awakening within herself from their conversation and offers:

"If you can conquer the vulnerable hours, you can allow yourself to be yourself, to go forward. You breathe in the night air, and it sustains you."

UP ALL NIGHT is an excellent addition to both public and high school libraries. Asking the question of "what have you ever done while staying up all night?" these entertaining stories will be a stimulating offering in the worlds of waking and dreaming.

Amazon.com Review
Ever since his first book was published some six decades ago, Peter Drucker has been essential to everyone serious about the "management of an enterprise (and) the self-management of the individual, whether executive or professional, within an enterprise and altogether in our society of managed organizations." This distinguished 30-year Claremont University professor has continuously identified critical principles in management, economics, politics, and the world in general. And he has redirected our thinking about them through more than two dozen books, including an autobiography and a couple of works of fiction. Now, with The Essential Drucker, he has overseen the compilation of his most important fundamentals into one indispensable book.

Reaching back as far as 1954 with his treatise "Management by Objectives and Self-Control" ("Each manager, from the 'big boss' down to the production foreman or the chief clerk, needs clearly spelled-out objectives" that clarify expected contributions "to the attainment of company goals in all areas of the business"), Drucker's now-established ideas take on a surprising new relevancy when remixed equally pioneering ideas from the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. Between the thoughtful "Management as Social and Liberal Art" through the provocative "From Analysis to Perception--The New Worldview" (both originally published in 1988's The New Realities), this book revisits some of modern management's most inspired writing and presents it in a way that should appeal to both newcomers and those needing a refresher course on Drucker's basic beliefs. --Howard Rothman

From Booklist
More Drucker! While the prolific nonagenarian and acclaimed management philosopher continues to write--Management Challenges for the 21st Century (1999) is his most recent book--he and others have also been busy compiling and summarizing his most noteworthy work. Peter Drucker on the Profession of Management (1998) is a collection of 13 significant articles that have appeared in the Harvard Business Review. John Flaherty, in Peter Drucker: Shaping the Managerial Mind (1999), and Jack Beatty, in The World According to Peter Drucker (1998), both penned biographical portraits and bibliographic essays that are homages to Drucker and his thoughts. Now Drucker himself has picked 26 selections that consist of chapters excerpted from 10 of the 29 books he has written over the past 60 years. His goal is to offer a "coherent and fairly comprehensive Introduction to Management" and to help those interested in learning more about his ideas determine "which of his writings are [most] essential." "...required reading for management students and practitioners alike ... a highly readable single volume survey of concepts that would otherwise involve reading nearly 30 separate books ...this is an extremely useful and thought-provoking compendium. "This is effectively a whole business library and refresher MBA course in one readable volume that wears its enormous wisdom lightly enough to make good holiday reading. It is stuffed with practical & inspirational advice, as useful to owner-managers of small businesses as to blue-chip board directors or administrators of non-profitmaking organisations"

Summary of Peter Drucker's For-Profit Management Advice
By Donald Mitchell
Before going further, let me note that this book is mislabeled. The excerpts in this book are from only ten of Professor Drucker's more than 30 management books. Although there is some reference to nonprofit management (where he spent half of his time), this volume does not encapsulate all of his ideas in that sphere. Many of his early ideas about society are also missing.
As great as his ideas about management are, his observations about how to think are even more valuable. The book contains no material from his autobiography, Adventures of a Bystander. You cannot hope to fully appreciate this material until you read that book.
What the book does contain is a fairly easy to follow series of 26 excerpts from the ten books, organized into three sections: Management, Individual, and Society. These books date back to 1954, so you get an overview of part of his work over the last 47 years. This overview will mainly be valuable to managers who have read very little Drucker, since there is essentially no new material in the book. The excerpts are also not connected by any transitions, so there is no additional perspective available from the book's organization.
Here are the sources of the chapters:
The New Realities, Chapters 1 and 26;
Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices, Chapters 2, 3, 5, and 18;
Managing for the Future, Chapters 4 and 19;
Management Challenges for the 21st Century, Chapters 6, 15, 21;
Managing in a Time of Great Change, Chapters 7 and 23;
Practice of Management, Chapter 8;
Frontiers of Management, Chapter 9;
Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Chapters 10-12, 20, and 24;
The Effective Executive, Chapters 13, 14, 16, and 17; and
Post-Capitalist Society, Chapters 22 and 25.
If you are not familiar with Professor Drucker, he is generally considered to be the first person to think systematically about what management is and needs to become. He was also the first to identify that we were moving into a knowledge-based society where the focus of work and the ways that work is organized would have to be totally transformed. His definition of what a business must do is the most often quoted one around: "The purpose of a business is to create a customer." Innovation and marketing are the prime tasks. The book is especially deep in references to his seminal thinking on how to innovate and to operate entrepreneurial businesses. He was also the first twentieth century thinker to see the connection between management of for profit and nonprofit organizations, and that both types of organizations are needed in growing numbers for a sound society. This book is also deeply presents his thinking about the social responsibility of business.
I am still impressed by how substantial his imprint is on all management books that I read. Whether or not Professor Drucker is cited, credited, or admired in these books, almost all of them are simply restatements or elaborations on his fundamental concepts. I hope this edition of his work will help extend his influence further into the future with new generations of executives and managers.
After you finish reading these landmark ideas, I suggest that you think about one element of the book from the individual section. What values do you want to bring to your work? Are you succeeding? If yes, congratulations! How can you accomplish more? If not, what can you change to make those values come to life?
Use your work as a canvas upon which to paint a better world, as Professor Drucker has!

An excellent compilation of Drucker's best works. A must read for every manager.
By Avinash Sharma, The Yogic Manager
The late Peter F. Drucker invented the discipline that we know as Management. This book is an excellent compilation of his best works, written over six decades and published in journals, magazines and over 30 books.
I am amazed at the breadth and depth of this compilation. It includes several topics (categorized in sections for Management, The Individual and Society). In the first few chapters Drucker defines management through its tasks and states that "there is only one valid definition of business purpose: to create a customer" (page 20). In the other chapters you will learn Management by Objectives (MBO), the process of making effective decisions, the importance of focusing on contributions and results, get introduced to the "knowledge worker" (page 304), a term Drucker created in the 60s, and learn about the "post-capitalist society" with knowledge as the central resource (page 288). This book has five chapters on Innovation & Entrepreneurship. And more.
While there is a lot of wisdom in each chapter, I will share below my thoughts from 4 chapters that were originally published in "The Effective Executive" (1966):
In Chapter 13: Effectiveness must be Learned, Drucker explains the diferrence between efficiency and effectiveness - efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things. For manual work, efficiency was enough. In today's world, the center of gravity has shifted from the manual worker to the "knowledge worker". For knowledge work, effectiveness is more important than efficiency.
An executive is ... a knowledge worker who is ... responsible for contributions (decisions, actions) ... that have significant impact on ... performance and results of the whole organization (derived from Chapter 13).
In Chapter 14: Focus on Contribution, Drucker stresses the importance of focusing outward, on contributions and results; as opposed to downward, on efforts. He then discusses the four basic requirements of effective human relations - communication, teamwork, self-development and development of others.
In Chapter 16: Know Your Time, Drucker explains time-diagnosis with questions for the executive:
a. What would happen if this were not done at all?
b. Which activities could be done by somebody else just as well, if not better?
c. (ask others) What do I do that wastes your time without contributing to your effectiveness?
Drucker then explains the identification of time wasters caused by - a lack of system, overstaffing, bad organization structure and malfunction in information. He also states that "Time is the scarcest resource, and unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed".
In Chapter 17: Effective Decisions, Drucker explains the decision process in five steps:
a. Determine whether the problem is generic or unique
b. Specify the objectives of the decision and the conditions it needs to satisfy
c. Determine the right solution that will satisfy the specifications and conditions
d. Convert the decision into action
e. Build a feedback process to compare results with expectations
He states that "No decision has been made unless carrying it out in specific steps has become someone's work assignment and responsibility. Until then, there are only good intentions". He then explains the importance of creating disagreement, rather than consensus. He states that disagreement provides alternatives and stimulates imagination and that "The first rule in decision making is that one does not make a decision unless there is disagreement".
This book is an excellent introduction to management. As you may have guessed from the quotes, it contains many of the most famous Druckerisms. I recommend this book as a must read to every manager and anybody interested in management.

The "Best of" Is Not Enough
By Bradley A. Swope
REVIEW: While I only rated this book 4 stars, keep in mind that this is a relative rating and that Peter Drucker's primary competition is himself. Drucker's books are always full of great thinking and great content, but I'm not sure that this book is for everyone interested in Peter Drucker (at least it's not one that I'd recommend first). First of all, the idea of distilling Drucker's work into a single book of material is hard for me to accept because he has so much great material that was already written fairly concisely (though there some overlap in his works). Does having the Essential Drucker mean you can read it and skip the original books? Certainly not if your serious about becoming a more effective person/executive. It is sort of like picking one Shakespeare or one Mozart, you'll get a good piece of work, but you're still missing a whole lot of important stuff.
Anyway, I think there is a couple situations for which this book will be especially useful. First, it may be most valuable to people (like me) who have read a number of Drucker's books. In essence, the Essential Drucker can act as a short refresher on many of Drucker's important concepts without having to go back and reread all of the original books. For this purpose the book was highly valuable to me. Also, the book may be valuable to those that have read a little Drucker and want to read more, but are unsure which of his many books to start with. Since the introduction lists the book that each chapter was originally published in, you can easy go to the source to expand upon something that interests you. However, for the reader that's fairly new to Drucker, why not go to the source and read something like Management Challenges for the 21st Century, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, The Practice of Management, or The Effective Executive. No matter what you choose you'll get great content related to the theory and practice of management. A final comment, an interesting approach to reading the Essential Drucker would be to read each chapter and then guess what year the chapter was written. In many cases, I think the answer will surprise.
STRENGTHS: As always, you get great content from one of the world's great thinkers on management, organization, and society. His writing is very concise, to-the-point, and sprinkled with real life examples.
WEAKNESSES: Some people are put-off by his very matter-of-fact writing style. He knows when he's right and rarely hedges his statements. Also, those needing fancy diagrams and graphics to learn material will be put off, because there are none.
WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK: For the reasons stated above, I'm recommending this book mainly to those who are interested in Drucker's management writings and who are already familiar with some of them. It makes a great refresher.
ALSO CONSIDER: Other major works by Drucker including, Management Challenges for the 21st Century, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, The Practice of Management, and The Effective Executive.
