PreS—This sanitized description of being a big sister is well-meaning, but lacks tension and story. A girl goes through a laundry list of things that she can and will do with her new baby sister, and ends with, "We can even share cuddling with Mom./I love being your big sister!" Everything is positive, and lines like "…you smell so sweet—/especially your feet./I almost want to eat them, /but that would be silly!" have a distinctly adult sensibility to them. The illustrations are pleasant enough, with two cartoonish pixies with small blue eyes, oversize heads, and thin frames traipsing through the primarily pink-hued pages. Those who want a more balanced story may find Robie Harris's Hi New Baby! About the Author
Brooke Shields began modeling and acting during childhood and went on to star in film, on television, and on Broadway. She graduated with honors from Princeton University and is the author of a memoir, the New York Times bestselling Down Came the Rain, and a picture book, Welcome to Your World, Baby, also illustrated by Cori Doerrfeld. Brooke lives with her husband, writer/producer Chris Henchy, and their daughters, Rowan and Grier, in Los Angeles.
Cori Doerrfeld grew up drawing and dreaming of becoming an artist. Cori lives with her husband, Tyler Page, and their daughter, Charli, in Minneapolis.

Sweet, but Rhythmically Challenged

This picture book is full of sweet sentiment and darling illustrations. It isn't a story so much as a promise of things to come between sisters. The excitement of having a new baby in the house is a big deal to older siblings, and this shines through.
As a read-aloud book, however, it is difficult to get into a decent rhythm. The prose is laid out to look as though it is rhythmic, so, while reading to my own daughter, I kept feeling off kilter. This may seem like a nitpicky thing to say, but try reading it aloud, and the difficulty will make sense. Brooke Shields is, without a doubt, an intelligent and soulful person, but that doesn't always translate into a gift for writing. The big sister's lines are full of heart but awkwardly written. Sometimes it rhymes, then it doesn't. This contributes to the stumbling I feel when I read this one aloud.
Awkward rhythm aside, this is a sweet book that would be nice for girls who are soon-to-be big sisters (or who already are!).
Note: My daughter became a big sister to a little brother last fall, but she still found this book delightful and relevant. But don't ask her what "relevant" means. ;-)

A beautifully illustrated and wonderful children's book!

This book is a very delightful story that has fantastic illustrations! The drawings are so colorful and the storyline is great for children and babies! I would highly recommend this book for anyone with children and even those without- it is simply a very sweet book. Both the illustrator and author did a great job with this.

Keeping it positive

I love the positive tone of this book. Cori Doerrfeld's illustrations are so colorful and full of special little details - I'm sure kids will find new things to fixate on with each reading of this sweet story. A great sister book.
