Everything you wanted to know about things that go bump in the night
By A. Burgin
This book is not just for those who are fans of the CW show Supernatural. Eric Kripke, creator of the show, prides himself on the validity of the legends and myths he uses in his show. This book gives background information about things encounted by the Winchesters with a few new critters added in. The text uses Sam and Dean's voices for each section and fans of the show can easily pick out which Winchester is speaking each time. This book is a must for those who want to learn more about urban legends and things that roam the night.

The "Supernatural" Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls
By Especially For You
This is a unique book and well worth the read, even if you are not a "Supernatural" fan. It is purportedly written by Dean and Sam Winchester, and they, of course, cannot refrain from making smart remarks about one another. This makes the book fun to read, but what makes it truly interesting is the fact that writers didn't make up the stories for the TV series and then publish them in a book; this folklore, myths and legends have been around Man started putting sounds together to make words. As you read this book, you cannot help but wonder where such folklore and legend originated. What did someone see, hear or feel some dark night that lead to such tales as Bloody Mary, the wendigo, werewolves, hellhounds, sthriga, or the thousand other creatures or demons we've read about? I highly recommend this book for its uniqueness and its peek into that dark, frightened corner of the human mind.

Loads of lore!
By R. C. Mulhare
I'd first heard about this book on a "Supernatural" fansite, and right away, I knew it would make a great read and it was the kind of book the series begged to have written: something that cataloged and expanded on the lore of the dozens of creatures which the Winchester brothers have tussled with over the course of the series -- and a few they *haven't* tussled with yet, which makes me wonder what lies ahead for next season! The first person POV makes it seem like the boys are relating their experiences to you first hand, and the excerpts from John Winchester's journal give you all the details you could ask for on the creatures he's dealt with and the life of a hunter. An excellent addition to an excellent series!

A classic in anthropology
By R.J.
A classic ethnography of the social networks and kin structures of low-income Black Americans in a the early 1970's. This book helped me a great deal when I conducted an ethnographic study in an urban, low-income US city in 2009. Some of the findings in the book might be anachronistic or place specific, but she gives the reader a great deal of insight into the logic of these structures. Rather than seeing household and kin ties as deviant, the way many Americans do, she shows that they make perfect sense given the history and political-economic conditions of the people in her study.

Carol B. Stack isn't as boring as I thought
By Jeff T.
By looking at the cover.. you'd think this was the most boring book available at the bookstore. I dreaded reading this when it was assigned to my Anthropology course.. however when I finally got around to reading it is insightful and interesting. It brought up facts that I've seen around me but failed to recognize as part of a culture.
One question I do pose though, when the family which inherits a large sum of money decides to share it among the poor community. Wouldn't the community be better off if that one family decided to move out of poverty, enabling the poor community to become smaller and thus have more items being able to rotate within the community? Eventually the community can become richer because of this instead of dragging those around them down.
Interesting book..

Goldy Schulz knows her food is to die for, but she never expected one of her best friends to actually keel over as she left a birthday party Goldy catered. It turns out to be a generous serving of cold-blooded murder. And the clever culprit is just getting cooking.

When a colleague—a woman who resembles Goldy—is stabbed, and Goldy is attacked outside her house, it becomes clear that the popular caterer is the main course on a killer menu. With time running out, Goldy must roll up her sleeves, sharpen her knives, and make a meal out of a devious murderer, before the killer can serve her up cold.

Black Wings: Courageous Stories of African Americans in Aviation and Space History, by Von Hardesty

Colin Powell once observed that "a dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work." This sentiment is mirrored dramatically in the story of African Americans in aerospace history.

The invention of the airplane in the first decade of the twentieth century sparked a revolution in modern technology. Aviation in the popular mind became associated with adventure and heroism. For African Americans, however, this new realm of human flight remained off-limits, a consequence of racial discrimination. Many African Americans displayed a keen interest in the new air age, but found themselves routinely barred from gaining training as pilots or mechanics. Beginning in the 1920s, a small and widely scattered group of black air enthusiasts challenged this prevailing pattern of racial discrimination. With no small amount of effort—and against formidable odds—they gained their pilot licenses and acquired the technical skills to become aircraft mechanics.

Over the course of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, African Americans have expanded their participation in both military and civilian aviation and space flight, from the early pioneers and barnstormers through the Tuskegee airmen to Shuttle astronauts.

Featuring approximately two hundred historic and contemporary photographs and a lively narrative that spans eight decades of U.S. history, Black Wings offers a compelling overview of this extraordinary and inspiring saga.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—Black Wings is a well-written, copiously illustrated book with sharp photographs (mainly in black and white) and colorful posters of the record of American blacks in aviation—from fabric-winged biplanes to outer space. Readers learn about pioneers like Bessie Coleman, the first black woman with a pilot's license; Eugene Jacques Bullard, the first black American to fly in combat (during World War I, for the French); and C. Alfred Anderson, the first to earn a Commercial Pilot License. About one-third of the book deals with the Tuskegee Airmen. These members of the first black combat flying organizations fought on two fronts during World War II: against the Luftwaffe in the skies over North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Germany, and against racism at home. Because of their phenomenal success, the units were continued into the postwar period, despite a sharp drawdown that drove the Air Force from 2.4 million people in 1945 to 303,000 two years later. The Airmen's record was a seminal reason for Air Force racial integration—and it was the first service to integrate. The book ends with the space era, highlighting such astronaut heroes as Fred Gregory, Guy Bluford, and Charles Bolden. An inspiring volume.—Alan Gropman, National Defense University, Washington, DC

I first learned about the Tuskegee Airmen, the African-American fighter pilots of WWII, and their famous red tail P-51 Mustangs after meeting the late Don Hinz at a local airfield. Hinz and his project to restore one of these P-51 planes piqued my interest, and curiosity led to my delving into the history of black American aviators.

Now, we have Von Hardesty's wonderful book Black Wings to describe this history, beginning with the barnstorming days of aviatrix Bessie Coleman and concluding with the highly specialized men and women of the Astronaut Corps. It is a poignant and inspirational story of people who dreamed of flying and their attempts to break through discrimination and barriers, including flight schools that refused to teach them and an elitist all-white U.S. Army Air Corps whose officers insisted that blacks couldn't successfully pilot military aircraft.

This 180-page book features 200 remarkable historic and contemporary photographs, many depicting the segregated days of flying: black aviation clubs, a movie flier announcing a "colored" cast, and a 1931 air show billed as a "colored air circus," among others. I recommend this book wholeheartedly, a great addition to readers' collections.

Fantastic photography
By Joyce A. Brewer
This book looks at a little-remembered group of black men who, with their abilities and initiatives and creativity, became a valuable working unit of the military. The photographs are great. Written very well, with empathy and understanding, from the author's meetings with relatives and friends of these fliers.

Lynsay Sands—the perennial USA Today and New York Times bestselling author well-known and loved for her delightful novels featuring the Argeneau family of vampires—once again shows us another side with Taming the Highland Bride, the second in the  wonderfully witty, supremely sexy historical romance series she kicked off with Devil of the Highlands. With Taming the Highland Bride, the incomparable Lynsay pays homage to the immortal Bard, William Shakespeare, as she delights readers with a tale of a smitten Scotsman’s determined efforts to tame his beautiful, hot-tempered fiancée, the notorious “Stewart Shrew.”

Fast pace and light read
By Samantha
This was really a 3.5 stars. Taming the Highland Bride is an easy, fast-paced story about mistrust and misunderstandings. This page turner was filled with obstacles that the main characters had to get past to find love. This was my first book by Lynsay Sands and I have to say that her writing style is very light and creates an easy flow.

Alex is patient, sweet and loyal man and I liked that a lot. Even though he had misgivings about Merry from rumors that she was a shrew, from the beginning he was attracted to her. He wanted to make her happy to be his wife. My only problem with Alex is that he was not portrayed as a warrior. For the better part of the book, Merry ran the household and held the men together, while Alex was constantly in harm's way and banged up.

Merry is a strong, independent and caring woman. After suffering through years of taking care of her drunken brothers and father, she is desperately seeking a new life. I honestly felt Merry's disappointment at her first encounter with her Alex, knowing she felt as though she left one horrible situation for another.

As they both try to move forward from their awkward first encounter, they both have to learn to let go and find love. I enjoyed the way Alex worked to get Merry's guard down to prove that he was not like the men in her family. He took his time not to force her but rather show her that he was a man of honor. Sure enough, slowly as they are on an adventure to Scotland, Merry sees her husband for the man that he truly is and allows him to slowly enter her heart.

While they are both discovering their newfound feelings towards one another, mystery and danger is lurking around every corner. I felt the mystery incorporated throughout the entire story was interesting and at the end I was a little surprised at the villain. I wanted them to dig around to find out who was behind the "mysterious" incidents but I was a little disappointed that they just happen to stumble across the truth. No one took real interest that they were in real danger except Merry.

Overall, I would recommend Taming the Highland Bride to anyone who wants to enjoy a quick and enjoyable read. I look forward to reading further along in this series.

No surprises
By Helen Hancox
Merewen Stewart, occasionally called a shrew, is fed up with her drunken father and brothers... and with the man she's supposed to marry who's been off on crusade. When she hears her betrothed, Alexander d'Aumesbery, is home from crusade, her father and brothers take her to marry him. Although Merry isn't particularly sad to wave goodbye to her drunken family as she has hopes that her husband may be a sober and worthy gentleman, she's vastly disappointed to first lay eyes on her betrothed when he's dead drunk. The following days aren't much better as he stumbles and is clumsy and appears to also have a drink problem.

Alex has heard the rumours about his shrewish betrothed but finds her a refreshing surprise. But as soon as she arrives at his home strange things start to happen. Is she responsible for drugging him and for some attempts on his life? As they travel to visit Alex's sister and her new husband, it seems that the danger is coming along with them. Can they get to the bottom of events and build a true relationship?

Lynsay Sands has a simple but readable writing style. Although I find her books rather lacking in characterisation and plot, largely driven through dialogue, they aren't boring. This book was the same, and despite its rather misleading title (there wasn't really any 'taming' to be done to Merry) it was a reasonable read. There were an awful lot of places where I had to suspend disbelief, for example the efficacy of some herbs which would make Viagra's makers rather excited, and the mystery side of the plot wasn't particularly gripping, but for those who like Lynsay Sands' books this is another of a similar level and will appeal to those who like historical highland romances.

2 ½ stars. Ordinary. Nothing special.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Merry's father and brothers are drunk most of the time. Merry manages the laird and the household and oversees the men's fight training. She is known as the Stewart Shrew because she's so tough on her father and brothers when they are drunk. A marriage was arranged years ago to Alex. He was fighting in the Crusades and just now returned. Merry's father and brothers take her to Alex's home for the wedding. When they arrive, they see Alex drunk. No one tells Merry that he was given whiskey for the purpose of pulling a bad tooth. Then each day someone drugs Alex causing him to appear drunk. Later there are repeated attempts to kill Alex.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This book did nothing for me. I stayed with it out of curiosity, but it wasn't engaging. It felt like the author was just getting out another book for the year. Story was predictable. There is a lot of conversation, but it was ordinary. Then we have stupidity. After everyone knows someone is trying to kill Alex. Alex's friend wants to post guards around Alex's tent at night. Alex says no. Then the bad guy sets the tent on fire while Alex and Merry are sleeping inside. Author doesn't explain why Alex said no. There are several sex scenes, but nothing special.

Instead of an interesting discovery process about the mystery, we have the convenient long explanation by the bad guy at the end, just before the bad guy will be striking the final killing blow.

Slight annoyance with the cover picture. Alex has long blond hair. Cover guy had short dark brown hair.

The title was misleading. There was no taming of Merry. After he saw her in action, Alex quickly fell in love with her.

I do not understand why this book won the RT Reviewers award for Scotland-Set Historical Romance.

DATA:
Story length: 371 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 8. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 18. Setting: unknown time during the Crusades probably 1100 to 1600, in Northern England and Scotland. Copyright: 2010. Genre: historical romance.

When Charlie Benjamin sleeps, monsters wake up.

It's hard to fit in when your nightmares open portals to the Netherworld, where horrible creatures live—like the class 3 Netherstalker that invaded a sleepover and tried to eat the other children. Luckily there's a place for Charlie—the Nightmare Academy. Built from wrecked ships set in the branches of the world's most incredible tree fort, the Academy trains people to use their unique gifts to fight the monsters that rush in when the lights go out. But Charlie is far more powerful than anyone ever imagined, and his entrance exam opens a portal straight to the heart of the Netherworld, where ultimate evil plots Earth's destruction. He'll need all his cleverness—and the help of his new friends—to save himself and his family and to put these bad boys to bed once and for all. The monsters under your bed are real!

But never fear—the Nightmare Academy will train Nethermancers and Banishers like you to destroy them!

The closet monster is REAL
By Mercedes
As a child did you fear the boogeyman in the closet? Or the monster you were certain was under the bed? Guess what, they are real. And a few "gifted" children in the world can bring these creatures home. Every time they have a nightmare a portal opens and one or two of these beasties crosses over. For Charlie these nightmares have cost him friends and granted him low self-esteem and loneliness. Fearing for their child, Charlie's parents home schooled him to avoid the nastiness children give each other if someone is different.

Charlie will awaken one night to a horrible class 5 monster in his room and will meet 3 amazing people; Rex, the wrangler, Tabitha the portal opener, and Pinch the bossy. These 3 will convince Charlie's folks to allow him to attend Nightmare Academy. A strange school designed for training children with the "gift" to battle the monsters.

After a forced show of strength to the Director, Charlie is once again the outcast. Not only does he have this "gift", he's strong, and he's separated further by the knowledge he is a Banisher as well as a Nethromancer. This is rare, what more can Charlie discover to make him a bigger freak.

Friends for Charlie will be finally made, Violet and Theodore (I couldn't help but remember Harry Potter in their mannerisms) and they will help him rescue his parents after a monster abduction.

I read this book in 2 sittings; it's fast paced, easy to read, a page turner, and keeps the reader hooked, nothing boring here. I look forward to the next book. Young and old alike will enjoy this book.

For both kids AND Big Kids!
By Noelemite
I got this for my 9 year old the other day. He started poking at it like it was cod liver oil. Like most 9 year old boys do when their father puts a BOOK in front of them. I told him it was probably like the Potter series - which he liked to WATCH... But I had him read the first ten pages before he could go to bed.

Imagine my surprise when I find him sitting at the kitchen table with TWO CHAPTERS left! He'd spent the entire night immersed in NA and kept 'shushing' me when I started asking him normal mundane questions about his plans for the day. (ok theres's some paternal schadenfreude at work here.)

But when he was done he was bubbling with excitement. Showing me the illustrations, trying to tell me the whole story. I told him I'd read it too and then we could talk about it. I started it right there and read it cover to cover. Now, Lorey's not writing in the style of Proust, he's got a very digestible and flowing style that keeps you chewing thru page after page. But this was a lot of fun. He created a whole fun uniqe world that I'd never visited.

Good going. For his freshman outing this was a joy and a pleasure.

Thrilling!
By NM Mom
I bought this for my 10-year-old son. He is a reluctant reader. But, he REALLY enjoyed this book. He has to read 30 minutes each night, as part of his daily homework. Often, I found him still reading this book long after the 30 minute timer had gone off! Any book that a reluctant reader can't put down is a good book! He said that the characters were interesting and that the monsters were awesome!

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of bestseller Peters's Vicky Bliss series will welcome her solid sixth suspense novel to feature the plucky art historian, last seen in Night Train to Memphis (1994). In Munich, where Vicky is an assistant curator at the city's National Museum, she and her longtime love, John Tregarth (formerly Sir John Smythe, notorious art thief), are shocked when their friend Feisal, the Inspector of Antiquities for all Upper Egypt, arrives unexpectedly and informs them that King Tut's mummy has been stolen from its tomb in the Valley of the Kings and that John is the prime suspect. Vicky and company, including her inquisitive boss, set off on a whirlwind quest beginning in Europe and ending in the Egyptian desert to clear John's name and recover the famous corpse. In compensation for a slower pace than in earlier books, Peters offers vivid descriptions of Egyptian landmarks, which will resonate with readers of the MWA Grand Master's beloved Amelia Peabody historical series. Vicky, introduced in 1973, is still in her early thirties and still connected to her lover, Sir John Smythe, a former art thief whom Vicky suspects may not be entirely reformed. There’s quite a disconnect in reading what is supposed to be a contemporary adventure. Characters speak in an elaborate, archaic, torturously witty fashion. Vicky, even as a first-person narrator, is not the main force in her own life but is dragged about the globe by Sir John. The effect is very much like a 1930s comedy of manners, with very creaky plot machinery. Readers who enjoy that era’s mysteries may like this one, but Peters comes across here like someone who hasn’t updated her gramophone. The plot revolves around recovering the body of King Tut, stolen from its tomb by some Brits. Bliss, through her current connection as assistant curator of Munich’s National Museum, follows Sir John through various exotic locales in search of Tut. The saving grace for this relic comes from Peters’ own expertise in the ancient world (she has a doctorate in Egyptology from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago). For devoted Peters fans who simply can’t wait for the next Amelia Peabody novel. --Connie Fletcher

Wish I could figure out how to award 4 3/4 stars!
By M. C. Carter
This is a VERY GOOD book in my opinion, which is what a book review, (again in my opinion) should be. Do I think it is Ms. Mertz-Michaels-Peters greatest book...no I would award that distinction to either Ammie Come Home (Michaels) or Devil May Care (Peters) The Love Talker (Peters) or maybe Summer of the Dragon or Legend in Green Velvet(also written as Peters). Ammie still scares me into sleeping with the lights on and these Peters books will always send me into spasms of laughter. But Laugher of Dead Kings is still a fitting contribution to and sadly probably the last of the Vicky Bliss series and does exactly what I had hoped it would do!

My advice to new readers of these books to not read this as a stand alone. To really appreciate this book, a reader needs to know the characters, both in the Bliss books and the Emerson-Peabody books.

In my opinion John is behaving more and more like his ancestor Ramses Emerson as this book progresses. My one quibble is that I would have loved to have seen more made of the relationship reveal between the two series, although after having the honor of meeting Ms. Mertz-Michaels-Peters and talking to her briefly about this point, I'm not surprised at the way this scene was written. What I would most enjoy reading is another Amelia book that would introduce loyal readers to the ancestress of John, Ramses' (as yet unborn in the last Amelia book)youngest daughter and complete the arc between the series.

I am thrilled, and bored my family to death talking about, the hints that there might be additional Amelia books coming from the author with the 'large hat' and her ownership of the three family journals. And to complete this very long book review, I also recommend the Joan Hess book 'Mummy Dearest' as the hints and ties to the Amelia books were fun.

Excellent!

To warn you in advance of potential bias on my part, the Vicky Bliss series has been beloved to me for many years, and I had long since given up on a new novel. So this was a treat. Taken as a stand-alone book, The Laughter of Dead Kings is probably not quite on the same level as some of its predecessors, but then I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't read the previous novels, or Night Train to Memphis at a bare minimum. (And in all fairness, that was a tough act to follow.) Peters doesn't spend an extensive amount of time reintroducing characters, locations, etc., and a newcomer would be quite lost. On the other hand, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is familiar with Vicky and company-- but it's unlikely that they would need my urging. I can, however, assure them that it's entirely worth it.

This is an honest-to-goodness Vicky, complete with lighthearted first-person narration, improbable occurrences, charming anti-heroes, and a certain amount of blundering. Peters writes with her usual panache and manages to avoid the pitfall of some of her other works (particularly the later Amelia Peabodys) in keeping the story tidy and to the point. If anything, it leaves you wishing for just a little bit more... but of course that's a hallmark of the best.

All the characters are as charming and convincing as ever, despite the fact that they have been mercilessly dragged into the modern era of cell phones and instant messaging, and a few of Peters' very deliberately placed revelations had me grinning. Great stuff. Sadly, both the tone and the events strongly implied that she is wrapping up the series, but then, "one is all any of us can count on." And this "one more" was just about right.

worth the wait
By Miss Ivonne
When "Night Train to Memphis" was published in 1994, I eagerly awaited the next installment in the Vicky Bliss/John Smythe series. As year after year went by, I came to the sad conclusion that there would never be another novel.

You can imagine how delighted I was when I learned that there would be a new book in the series. I bought "Laughter of Dead Kings" the very day it came out. The sixth entry in this series was wonderful, albeit not as good as some of the other books in the series, particularly "Street of Five Moons" and the lovely "Trojan Gold." John and Vicky were wonderful, but Anton Z. Schmidt -- ah, the clever and debonair Schmidt -- was better than ever! I know John is supposed to be the love interest, but it's Schmidt who is my hero. I've fallen in love!

With so much suspense, cleverness, laughs, and twists and turns, "Laughter of Dead Kings" was definitely worth the wait!

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9–Former juvenile delinquent Rachel Buchanan would much rather have a hamburger and hit the beach than spend the day in a dusty library researching the location of ancient artifacts. But when you are a spy-school student and a reincarnated goddess–like it or not–duty doesn't just call, it insists. In this installment in the series, Rachel and her friends trek to Brazil to find a set of Roman artifacts before Rachel's arch-nemesis, who thinks he's the reincarnation of the bull god Mithras, can gather them and perform a mysterious ritual. Before she can save the world, though, the young woman must come to terms with who she is, an issue that even teens without superpowers can understand. The script is peppered with witty dialogue and realistic conflict between the teen heroes and the villains, and Rainbow Buddy's black-and-white manga-style panels manage to stay just this side of too cute. A thoroughly American comic tale that fits seamlessly into a manga telling.–Beth Gallego, Los Angeles Public Library END

The only place we could find this was Amazon. As advertised, but we picked standard shipping so it arrived a day later than anticipated. Not a big deal, and seller was quick to respond to our inquiry. Will buy from them again.

From Publishers Weekly
Against the cacophony that pervades our lives, novelist LeClaire (The Lavender Hour) offers a persuasive antidote: silence. Sixteen years ago, LeClaire decided to devote a 24-hour period to not speaking, and it became a twice-a-month practice. LeClaire draws deeply on this experience in calling for a wholesale rethinking of noise and a greater appreciation for quietude and nature. Especially revealing are scenes in which the author or her friends, husband and other family struggle with her practice. It is within this conflict that LeClaire finds the lessons that she wishes to pass on to her readers. With Ann Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea as a model, LeClaire, too, focuses especially on women, encouraging them to carve out a silent space in a demanding world. Both book and the practice seem at once self-indulgent and eminently sensible. LeClaire's prose is colloquial, friendly and familiar, and the book is as much memoir as it is inspiration. Nineteen photos by LeClaire's son illustrate each chapter opening. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Sixteen years ago, novelist LeClaire decided to spend a day in silence. That 24 hours changed her life. She found in silence something more than not-speaking. Silence was, and is, a means to greater self-understanding and, paradoxically, to greater connection with nature and with others. Since that day, she has devoted two days a month to silence. In this eloquent and moving book, she describes how others responded to her apparent withdrawal—sometimes with anger, sometimes with fear, sometimes with envy, often with loving support. She relates how her practice has changed her, especially in her relationship to age and death, that final silence. Although technically a memoir, this book moves beyond that genre into spirituality and philosophy. LeClaire’s reputation as a novelist may draw readers to this lovely book, which should also have crossover appeal to spiritual seekers of any religion and no religion. --Patricia Monaghan

From the Back Cover

When Anne D. LeClaire decided to turn an ordinary Monday into a day of silence, little did she realize she had begun an inner voyage that would transform her life.

In the seventeen years since, LeClaire has practiced total silence two days each month. By detaching herself from the bustle of her hectic lifestyle and learning to listen to her deepest self, she has found a center from which to live—one that tests, strengthens, and heals her. In practicing silence, she has discovered her own secret garden—a cloistered, sacred private place where true personal growth is possible.

In this eloquent book—part memoir, part philosophical inquiry, written with clarity and warm humor—LeClaire reflects on how silence can help us expand our awareness, ignite and nurture creativity, and achieve inner peace.

Interesting BUT ....
By Malini L. Goculdas
I was intrigued by this book initially because the author decided to observe a silent day twice a month. She has faithfully done this now for seventeen years, occasionally observing longer time periods, even an entire week, in complete silence. The book documents her observations and experiences. Silence has changed her life.

At first, it is difficult for Anne's family and friends to accept that she will not take calls or talk at all on certain days. Then they begin to realize that certain things are not that important, they can wait a day. Anne begins to notice that she is getting calmer and more peaceful. The buzz of modern society begins to feel like an onslaught - the volume in a movie theatre is too much, for example. She begins to turn more and more towards nature, developing deeper appreciation of natural rhythms.

Along the way, she finds inpiration and wisdom among the world's spiritual traditions. After all, solitude and contemplation have been a prerequisite to enlightenment for many religious leaders. I found this aspect of the book a bit trite, because she draws on the usual suspects one would find on a Barnes and Noble religion or philosophy shelf.

In the end, however, I admit to some annoyance. Anne is a writer, her children are grown and away at college, her husband the naturalist is out of the house much of the time. She spends most of her day in solitude anyway. She comes from a certain background - white middle class New Englander - and lives out on Cape Cod year round; there is an inherent insularity already. What she has accomplished is not the big stretch it would be for someone in different circumstances. She is told as much by an Irani author that she meets at a writer's retreat. She dismisses his words initially by assuming he must be "a little drunk." She later realizes that silence has a shadowy side, where it is imposed on someone. But I get the impression she cannot really relate to this other perspective, she has neither the cultural background nor the ability to explore it deeply.

Also I would like to ask the author why she talks about long periods of meditative silence, but doesn't actually meditate. She would get the same benefits (and much more) in a shorter timeframe!

On the whole I enjoyed the book because I am also drawn to periods of quiet. The white spaces in our lives are very important, like pauses between musical notes that contribute to the overall score. Taking the book as merely a private view is the right perspective. It is one woman's personal journey, and a worthy one at that.

"Listening" is a real gem
By Linda H.
Reading Anne LeClaire's latest work, Listening Below The Noise, is a lot like peeking into someone's journal. But instead of having to sneak the read, LeClaire openly invites us to become privy to some of her most intimate thoughts and experiences as she recounts her journey over the past 16 years on the practice of silence. Through LeClaire's writing, the reader is introduced to a simpler, more honest way of noticing, approaching, and interacting with the world around us, the people in our relationships, and our ownselves. This is not a self-help book or how-to book, but rather a friend's perspective on a practice that has enhanced her life so much that she wants to share it with us.

This is a touching memoir of sorts, beautifully written, illustrated with lovely photographs that seem to capture the very essence of the written words. I found the book so provoking, I read it twice and it has quickly become a favorite gift for friends. LeClaire's insights and experiences offer poignant lessons for us all and I would consider it a must read for anyone searching for a path to honesty and simplicity in his or her own life.
