Jokes My Father Never Taught Me: Life, Love, and Loss with Richard Pryor, by Rain Pryor

The loving yet brutally honest memoir of the daughter of comedy legend Richard Pryor

Rain Pryor was born in the idealistic, free-love 1960s. Her mother was a Jewish go-go dancer who wanted a tribe of rainbow children, and her father was Richard Pryor, perhaps the most compelling and brilliant comedian of his era.

In this intimate, harrowing, and often hilarious memoir, Rain talks about her divided heritage, and about the forces that shaped her wildly schizophrenic childhood. In her father's house, she bonded with Richard's grandmother, Mamma, a one-time whorehouse madam who never tired of reminding Rain that she was black. In her mother's house, and in the home of her Jewish grandparents, Rain was a "mocha-colored Jewish princess," learning how to cook everything from kugel to beef brisket.

It seemed as if Rain was blessed with the best of both worlds, but it didn't quite work out that way. Life at Mom's was unstable in the extreme, while at Richard's place Rain was exposed to sex and drugs before she had even learned to read. "Daddy," she told her father one day, sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner at the advanced age of eight, "the whores need to be paid."

Jokes My Father Never Taught Me is both lovingly told and painfully frank: the story of a girl who grew up adoring her father even as she feared him—and feared for him—as his drug problems grew worse. In 1980 Pryor tried to kill himself by setting himself on fire, then joked that it had been an accident: "No one ever told me you couldn't mix cookies with two types of milk!" In his later years, Pryor succumbed to multiple sclerosis, and Rain watched in tears as her father became a shell of his former self. Once, in an unusually introspective mood, Pryor asked his daughter, "Why do you love me, Rainy, when I can be so mean?"

Jokes My Father Never Taught Me answers that poignant question and many more. It is an unprecedented look at the life of a legend of comedy, told by a daughter who both understood the genius and knew the tortured man within.

From Publishers Weekly
Here's a rambling, warts-and-all look at life with Richard Pryor, the beloved comedy iconoclast whose public success masked a private life brimming with alcohol, drugs, violence and paranoia. Written by his 37-year-old daughter, this family biography chronicles her first meeting with her father at age four, Richard's role as a wayward family man (he had seven children by a number of different women), his struggle with MS, and his 2005 death. Amid less interesting snapshots of her own life-including her work as an actress-Pryor offers a bold but sympathetic portrait of her "misogynistic, mercurial, unpredictable, and violent" father that's as fascinating as it is conflicted: "That was life with Richard Pryor. Sex and violence, punctuated by rare moments of family happiness." In addition, Pryor takes readers behind the scenes of Richard's career; into the "weird sort of Richard Pryor Fan Club" made up of ex-wives, ex-girlfriends and their children; and down Richard's frightening path to debilitating illness. Vital, entertaining and appalling, Pryor has fleshed out a familiar dysfunctional family refrain-"It was a lot easier to love him if you didn't know him"-with bravery and wit.

Similar and Different from Rebecca Walker
By Jeffery Mingo
Rain Pryor must have said to herself, "If Rebecca Walker can write a book, then so can I!" Both Rain and Rebecca are Black, Jewish women. They are both the children of a famous person and of a divorced family. Rain describes Richard Pryor's abuse and addiction; Rebecca describes Alice Walker's naive negligence. However, Rebecca's memoir is serious and "high" in nature; Rain's is a text that anyone can pick up and speed through. Rebecca only includes a photo of herself on the cover of her book; Rain is shown with her father. Rebecca's book has no other photos; Rain's is filled with them and that makes for its page-turning nature. Rebecca centers herself whereas Rain speaks of her father 85% of the time. Rebecca ends her book when she finishes high school; Rain describes her life until her father's death. (Rebecca goes on to Yale and Rain suggests she never went to college.) Though the two books have different aims, they are worthy in their own ways.

Rain admits that she is an actress and not a writer. She is no Toni Morrison, but her words and experiences are still valuable, entertaining, and insightful. Rain says despite being on "Head of the Class," she ended up doing construction work and Miss Cleo-like telephone service. This reminds me of how Eric Estrada said he struggled after "C.H.I.P.S." and Bob Crane went downhill after "Hogan's Heroes." Hollywood is fleeting, despite the Julia Roberts and Will Smiths on the screen.

As much as domestic abuse makes people cringe, this book was scant on the extent of Richard Pryor's nastiness. The film "What's Love Got to Do with It?" suggests that Ms. Turner went into detail about how Ike mistreated in "I, Tina." Rain just says, "He abused me" and later in the book she mentions one instance of being hit. I think people may have a better view of Richard's being a hot mess if she said more. Rain repeats, "He's the only father I had, so I love him regardless." I think may abused children will relate. She also said her own marriage was rocky, soon after it started. She never answers whether she and her husband divorced. She never questions whether her father's numerous unstable marriages affected her own.

Surprisingly good!
By Whatshername
Without even taking into account the quality of most "offspring of celebrity" books, this was a very good read! It was touching and insightful, not just a wild and shocking account of Richard's life. (which by all accounts would have filled a book easily) I would recommend it for anyone who likes entertainment/show business memoirs.

Heartwarming and Powerful!
By MarlyCate
Candid, well-written and an easy read. Language is a bit rough - uses F--k a bit much, but so did her father.

A decent historical romance, more like 3.5 stars
By Michelle Sutton
For the most part this was a good story. It kept my interest more than lost it. But there were some things that made it a bit challenging. Like sometimes the sentence structure didn't make sense. Also, the characters would say things and do things that didn't fit the era they were in. That kind of stuff tends to bug me. Like use of expressions that didn't exist in speech in that time period.

There is also the issue of characterization, and some of the people were pure evil. Usually even the bad guys have vulnerable spots and I didn't see that with two of the characters who always gave Dorritt a hard time. I did admire Dorritt but I question whether or not she would have been allowed to act the way she did toward the slaves without negative consequences. It made her heroic but lost some believability at the same time given how harshly her stepfather treated their slaves.

But on the plus side the romance was pretty intense at times. The author knows how to write a yummy kiss and leads up to it very well. But toward the very end there was another issue that is hard to share without giving away any key plot points, but it did seem a bit unresolved. Several people were in perilous situations that went unresolved, so you don't know what happened to them. Did the guy die? Did the other guy ever get out of jail? Stuff like that.

Overall I enjoyed this story more than not. Though I did mention more downsides, I have to say that this author does know how to write a good romance, which is why I finished the book. Maybe she should just stay away from historical romances and stick to contemporaries.

interesting "Era of Good Feelings" Americana romance
By Harriet Klausner
In 1821 twenty-five years old spinster Dorritt Mott fears her stepfather Mr. Kilbride is up to his usual no good, but this time her clenched gut expects the worst. She proves right when she learns he gambled away her family's Belle Vista Plantation that he has lived off of while she ran it. Knowing he must flee from New Orleans, he informs his extended family they will leave for the Texas Territory where they can claim land and start over. Dorritt would like to go her own way, but knows her pampered mom and her spoiled sister Jewell whose fiancé dumped her need her.

Dorritt knows Mr. Kilbride is an amoral moron who will vanish at the first inkling of trouble; from what she knows of the trek from Louisiana to Texas it is very dangerous. She prefers to depend on wagon train half-breed scout Quinn and God than Kilbride. However, as her attraction for the half Cherokee grows, she learns once again a man cannot be trusted as he has business yes with Kilbride.

The opening Texas Star of Destiny tale is an interesting "Era of Good Feelings" Americana romance. Although Mr. Kilbride, his wife and Jewell are too stereotyped, Dorritt and Quinn are fully developed intriguing lead characters. Fans will relish this fine tale of a feisty female defying the expected role of a Louisiana aristocrat in life and in love.

Sexy western hero and believably strong heroine
By Heather Diane
I really enjoyed this peek into early Texas history. I especially appreciated the author's attention to the different cultural attitudes about race and other issues that would have been in conflict (well, still are) in the melting pot of Texas. I liked that the heroine was strong without coming across as being inappropriate for her time period, and I found the hero very attractive :) Definitely recommended as a fun read for those who like western romance.

From Publishers Weekly
In his latest effort, Pearlman (The Bad Guys Won!) tells the story of how the Dallas Cowboys went from being a league doormat to a Super Bowl–winning machine. It's the cast of characters that makes this story a page-turner, starting with controlling owner Jerry Jones; all-business coach Jimmy Johnson, who would cut a player without blinking; and star players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders. Pearlman explores the many other people who bought into the philosophy that if you were going to be a Dallas Cowboy... you needed to live the life—and that meant, in the early '90s, plenty of infidelity, cocaine, nightly trips to gentleman's clubs and hangovers at practice. Pearlman interviewed nearly 150 members of the Cowboys organization for the book, but much of the terrific detail comes from such tangential folks as journalists, players' wives and staff at the local Cowboys restaurant. The anecdotes range from uplifting (the heartwarming story of quarterback Troy Aikman granting a wish to a dying boy) to raunchy (defensive end Chris Haley, while playing for the 49ers, often masturbated in the locker room). In the end, Pearlman has produced a narrative that is as entertaining as it is insightful. (Sept.)

From Booklist
In February 1989, Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys, immediately fired the iconic Tom Landry, and hired Jimmy Johnson from the collegiate ranks. The team would end the 1989 season with the worst record in the league. In a city that lives and breathes the Cowboys, the natives were restless. But in short order all was right in Big D as the team, led by future Hall-of-Famers Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, and Emmitt Smith, won three Super Bowls in four years. The on-field success was paralleled by off-field excess. Drugs, strip clubs, orgies, fights, marital infidelities, and, finally, one player stabbing another in the neck with scissors. Pearlman, who seems to revel in the seamy side of sports—his The Bad Guys Won! (2004) was an account of the equally lecherous 1986 New York Mets—interviewed players, coaches, and others while also plumbing print sources. Yes, he dishes the dirt, but he also catches the team dynamic that fostered success as well as the infighting that led to disaster. Informative as well as titillating. --Wes Lukowsky

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "SCORING ON THE FIELD... SCORING OFF THE FIELD... *COWBOYS-STYLE!*"
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
When the first chapter of a non-fiction football book starts off with future Hall Of Fame receiver Michael Irvin stabbing a teammate in the neck with a scissors... and blood is shooting all over the room... and the intensity of the lurid details... on and off the field... regarding the famed "dynastic" Dallas Cowboys of the 1990's... never lets up for the next three-hundred-fifty-eight pages... you know you've got a great book in your hands. Any true football fan, regardless of what team you root for will want to read this book. There are so many riveting... outlandish... insider... stories... that you will constantly want to stop reading for a moment or two... just to call one of your buddies to tell him what you just read!

This book has it all. From the "humble" beginnings (as far as wins and losses that is... nothing about any of the key individuals in this story could ever be considered humble!) concerning the 1989 Cowboys who had a one-win fifteen-loss season... to the three-time Super Bowl Champions. The author smoothly gives you detailed background information on everyone from owner Jerry Jones to coach Jimmy Johnson to Troy Aikman/Emmitt Smith/Michael Irvin/Nate Newton/Charles Haley/Deion Sanders... and every Cowboy large... small... or in between... who effected the team on or off the field... good or bad. Absolutely no punches are pulled.

From drug busts, that included Michael Irvin and teammate Alfredo Roberts being caught with 10.3 grams of cocaine, more than an ounce of marijuana, assorted drug paraphernalia and sex toys... and oh yea... two strippers... to shocking exposes regarding eventual FIVE-TIME-SUPER-BOWL-CHAMPION Charles Haley who would expose himself... and "pleasure-himself"... in front of teammates in the locker room... training room... and meeting rooms... to famous quotes from players, that truly thought they were above the law, are provided... such as when three-hundred-sixty pound Nate Newton said: "WE'VE GOT A LITTLE PLACE OVER HERE WHERE WE'RE RUNNING SOME WHORES IN AND OUT, TRYING TO BE RESPONSIBLE, AND WE'RE CRITICIZED FOR THAT, TOO."

Did you know that when former Cowboy owner Bum Bright sold the team to Jerry Jones... that one of the conditions of the sale was that Jones had to fire Tom Landry? Landry was probably the most popular man in Texas, but Bright couldn't stand him. How did the Cowboys code of ethics compare to other big name NFL teams? One Cowboy said: "WHEN I WAS WITH THE REDSKINS COACH GIBBS WOULD SAY, "OK FELLA'S, DON'T MESS WITH STREET DRUGS OR STEROIDS, BECAUSE THAT'S NOT HOW WE DO THINGS HERE." COACH JOHNSON ON THE OTHER HAND, WOULD SAY, "DON'T MESS WITH STREET DRUGS OR STEROIDS, BECAUSE THE DRUG TEST IS IN A WEEK AND YOU DON'T WANNA GET CAUGHT." "IT WAS OBVIOUS JIMMY LACKED SOME CHARACTER IN HIS PURSUIT OF GREATNESS."

It's all here in exquisite detail. Nothing is held back. The way players... coaches... and owners... really feel! Who they think is stupid... who is smart... who had courage and who didn't. One Cowboy whose valor won over his team was Troy Aikman, of whom linebacker Garry Cobb said: AS A ROOKIE AGAINST THE CARDINALS AIKMAN "WAS KNOCKED COLD FOR NEARLY FIVE MINUTES BEFORE BEING HELPED OFF THE FIELD. TROY EARNED ALL OUR RESPECT. HE GOT KILLED AND REFUSED TO CRY. I'VE BEEN ON THE FIELD WHEN QUARTERBACKS CRY, AND IT AIN'T PRETTY. DAN MARINO WAS A CRIER - "WHOSE MAN WAS THAT! WHERE'S THE BLOCKING! WHAH!" "BUT AIKMAN - NEVER. AIKMAN WAS A MAN."

The author, Jeff Pearlman, magically, and seamlessly, weaves a story that gives you equal servings of statistical game information... unwavering disections of diverse psychological profiles... including Jerry Jones's jealousies and Jimmy Johnson's insecurities... and the sensitive human backdrop's... such as Michael Irvin... the third youngest of SEVENTEEN CHILDREN... who never had his own bed until college.

I recommend this book highly to any football fan.

Gilbert's day camp is going on an overnight trip, and Gilbert expects nothing but fun. But when loudmouthed Lewis tells him about the Camp Hi-Dee-Ho ghost, he can't help but feel a little nervous. He doesn't want his friends to think he's a scaredy-cat, but some spooky noises in the middle of the night might just put him face-to-face with his fears!

From Publishers Weekly
DeGroat's latest clever caper starring Gilbert the opossum (Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink) finds the fellow on an overnight trip to Camp Hi-Dee-Ho. He stoically refuses to pack his teddy ("Sleep-away camp is for big kids") and puts up a brave front when big-mouth fellow camper Lewis trots out some typical camp-related taunts, announcing that a ghost haunts Hi-Dee-Ho and calling the lemonade "bug juice." Around the campfire, after an older kid relates the tale of the alleged ghost, Lewis sneaks up on Gilbert and scares him with a loud "BOO!" In the cabin after lights-out, the hero tightly hugs his teddy (which his mother has slipped into his sleeping bag). DeGroat suspensefully prolongs a nighttime trip to the outdoor bathroom along a dark path lined with threatening-looking trees and, in a signature twist, Gilbert gets a chance to give Lewis his comeuppance. Numerous droll particulars, including Gilbert's Martian-and-spaceship-patterned pajamas and the likable lad's hyperbolic facial expressions will keep readers coming back for more. Those anticipating with or without some anxiety an inaugural camp experience especially will revel in this realistic yet reassuring visit to Hi-Dee-Ho. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Gilbert and his friends are back for another cozy adventure, this time on an overnight camping trip. DeGroat's text flows well, carrying the kids from their long bus ride to the campground, through a busy afternoon of activities (quickly summarized) to the real focus of the story: a campfire ghost-story session, with the resulting middle-of-the-night frights and a humorous resolution. The events are believable, and even a bit predictable, but amusing enough to be enjoyable, too. Best of all, Lewis, who enjoys teasing Gilbert, turns out to be more vulnerable than he pretends, while Gilbert gets to take some very gentle revenge. DeGroat's familiar animal cast displays decidedly kidlike characteristics, captured in her watercolor illustrations as well as through conversations and behavior. Their furry faces express anticipation and pleasure as well as worry and fear. Even the illustrations of the setting add to the atmosphere with spooky-looking faces discernible on tree trunks while bright fireflies glimmer mysteriously in the dark. Whether they're already fans or new to the series, young listeners will enjoy this mildly spooky, decidedly satisfying overnight expedition.

From Booklist
PreS.-K. The talk on the bus is of ghosts haunting Camp Hi-Dee-Ho, where Gilbert and fellow campers are headed for an overnight. Older camper Lewis takes particular joy in taunting Gilbert, telling him that the fruit juice is really bug juice and calling him "scaredy cat." At lights out, Gilbert is relieved to find his Teddy in his sleeping bag. Clutching his security toy, he finally drifts asleep, only to be awakened by all the juice he drank. More fearful of wetting the bed than of going down the dark path to the bathroom, Gilbert sets out. In his hurry, however, he trips and knocks over some garbage cans. The racket rouses Lewis, who, as Gilbert discovers, isn't as brave as he would like it to appear. DeGroat's expressive watercolors are just right; they capture the eager anticipation, the quiet apprehension, and the fear that little ones can feel on a first overnight away from home. The fact that the campers are all animals is a clever twist. Ellen Mandel

It's okay to be afraid of the dark
By Midwest Book Review
Written and illustrated by Diane deGroat, Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't Let The Bedbugs Bite! is a lovely story about young raccoon, skunk, and porcupine children going to sleep-away camp for the first time. With the important moral message that it's okay to be afraid of the dark, yet the power to be brave lies within us all, Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't Let The Bedbugs Bite! is an excellent and recommended picturebook to prepare young children for the rigors of spending days and nights away from home.

Cute camp book
By Amazon Customer
Gilbert is a fuzzy critter- -perhaps a possum. One summer, his parents send him off to an overnight at camp. Gilbert is very excited about playing with the big kids at camp, but the big kids tell a ghost story around the campfire, which makes Gilbert very scared. Younger kids may find the book a little scary, but 4 to 6 year olds may find it quite engaging. The book has about 850 words.

Content superior to the cover, however.
By P. J. O'Toole
I finally bought a real French-English dictionary, the Collins Robert is a treat after having struggled with a half-dozen paperback dictionaries over the years. After some significant online research, the purchase of the Collins Robert has proved to be an excellent choice. The sheer volume of translations is more than I'm used to -- and the format is pleasing, and it's, of course, very resourceful. As I look up words I can choose to dig in as much as I want, to sharpen my understanding, or not -- I read French every day, and the Collins Robert is the perfect companion. Only one minor problem, the publisher economized on the binding, which is more suited for a book half the size. Fortunately, in this case, you cannot judge this book by its cover - I recommend this dictionary for its content, not its cover.

The best French-English dictionary
By J.K.
When I found that my "student" dictionary lacked even the most basic cooking terms, I decided that I needed a really good French-English dictionary. So, I visited bookstores (in London, where the selection is better) and previewed every French-English dictionary I could find. The Collins Robert Unabridged 8th edition was the absolute best. Then, all I had to do was wait for the 8th edition to be published in the U.S. and eventually it was.

It is almost misleading to call this just a dictionary, given that the entries are so complete and the usage notes so numerous. Example: The entry for the verb "faire" runs about 39 column inches! The formatting (e.g., the judicious use of color and bold font) also makes this dictionary a joy to use. The only bad thing I have to say about this dictionary is that the version published for the U.S. market has a rather cheap, nonsubstantial binding. But since it's too big to carry around anyway, that's a minor flaw. If you need a good French-English dictionary, look no further -- this is the one.

Good content, bad binding.
By R. Pizzimenti
The Collins dictionaries are the best in the world for going between English and Romance languages. This dictionary is no exception. However, the absolutely shoddy binding that Harper in the US chose makes this edition a poor investment for the serious student of French. The two bookstores in which I have found this item all show tearing or damage on the paper-thin binding even from in-store browsing. When I ordered New from Amazon it arrived with the cover glue separating from the pages at the back. One could order this edition and have it rebound with proper material and workmanship, or purchase the older (2006) edition (blue cover) which has a binding that will stay in one piece. I love this dictionary and hope they resolve this in the next printing.

The Authenticity Hoax: Why the “Real” Things We Seek Don’t Make Us Happy, by Andrew Potter

“A totally real, genuine, authentic book about why you shouldn’t believe any of those words. And it’s genuinely good.”
— Gregg Easterbrook, author of Sonic Boom

Exploring a number of trends in our popular culture—from Sarah Palin to Antiques Roadshow, organic food to the indignation over James Frey’s memoir—Andrew Potter follows his successful Nation of Rebels with a new book that argues that our pursuit of the authentic is fraught with irony and self-defeat. Readers of The Paradox of Choice or Bowling Alone will find many enlightening insights in The Authenticity Hoax, which is, in the words of Tom de Zengotita (Mediated), “the kind of criticism that changes minds.”

From Publishers Weekly
According to Potter (coauthor of Nation of Rebels), the cost of modernity's dismantling of traditional frameworks of truth and meaning has forced meaning and authenticity to become individual searches that are private and consumercentric. Potter's lively cultural analysis combines an astute analysis of foundational antimodernist thought (in particular Rousseau) with savvy surveys of mass culture to flag the pitfalls and ironies of the modern obsession with authenticity in its every incarnation (authentically punk, spiritual, environmentally conscious) from our jeans to our celebrities. Potter champions a mitigation of modernity's negative, alienating effects rather than a rejection of modernity, and his characterizations of antimodernists can be dismissive to the point of oversimplifying a large and varied spectrum of dissent from the status quo. But in redeeming modernity from primitivists, apocalyptic doom-mongers, and more subtle critics, the author offers a shrewd and lively discussion peppered with pop culture references and a stimulating reappraisal of the romantic strain in modern life. From Booklist
We live, Potter argues, in a world dominated by the prepackaged and the artificial, the fraudulent and the fake. Growing out of this increasingly bleak cultural landscape is a movement centered on the notion of authenticity: the honest, the natural, the real. That’s all fine and good, Potter says, except for one thing: we don’t have a clue what we mean by authenticity, and even if we did, we wouldn’t know how to find it. That is, the quest for authenticity is a hoax—there is no such thing. Authenticity is an exclusionist notion, defined, by what it isn’t, not by what it is, and, for the most part, so-called authentic lifestyles are just as artificial and contrived as the rest of modern culture. It’s a fascinating approach to a fascinating subject, and Potter bolsters his argument with examples drawn from pop culture, history, and other sources. Written in a lively style that invites the reader to argue with the author, the book, at the very least, will turn the reader’s eye inward, and make us take a good, long look at the way we present ourselves to the world. --David Pitt

Review
“There are excellent arguments here to steal for the next time some bearded hipster at a party enthuses about brining his own beets or vacationing in an eco-tent.” (Newsweek)

“Potter’s broad-ranging survey makes a good case that the authenticist fantasy is deeply embedded in the culture.” (Wall Street Journal)

“[Andrew Potter] offers a shrewd and lively discussion peppered with pop culture references and a stimulating reappraisal of the romantic strain in modern life.” (Publishers Weekly)

“A totally real, genuine, authentic book about why you shouldn’t believe any of those words. And it’s genuinely good.” (Gregg Easterbrook, author of Sonic Boom)

“Unique insights on every page and breathtaking in scope... We’re not quite certain what is authentic but we know what it is not. Andrew Potter helps us sift through the confusion.” (John Zogby, Chairman of Zogby International and author of The Way We'll Be)

“The kind of criticism that changes minds.” (Thomas De Zengotita, author of Mediated)

“The author writes with authority about the ways in which today’s men and women seek authenticity, or meaning, in their lives … A provocative meditation on the way we live now.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“The Authenticity Hoax has the estimable virtue of bringing the profound down to scale while keeping the big picture in hi-def clarity. It’s as lively, funny and easy to read as one would want a book on epidemic spiritual malaise to be.” (Toronto Star)

“Potter weaves elements of history, philosophy and pop culture together in a book that will leave an impression even if it doesn’t necessarily show us the path. Is Andrew Potter one of the great thinkers of our age? He may well be: this is great stuff.” (January Magazine)

“Potter’s book is very smart.” (National Post)

"Culture? That is something we do for tourists."
By Kevin Currie-Knight
The above quote is from this book's seventh chapter. Not only are we all multiculturalists now, but the idea of being 'authentic' is simply part of our every day vocabulary. Bestsellers like The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, Dilbert and The Office lampoon the inauthentic desk job, and a robust consumer market of 'authentic' everything (from jeans to organic produce) grows by the year.

So, why challenge it? Andrew Potter gives us several good reasons. First, he suggests that seeking for authenticity is as self-defeating as it is phony. It is self-defeating because when one quests for the authentic, one tends to get lost in the search (which is the opposite of focusing on any 'true self'). It is phony because, all too often, seeking the authentic - buying organic food, appreciating different cultural artifacts, etc - is every bit as much about appearing to be authentic to others as it is achieving authenticity for the self. The first several chapters (minus the first, which explores the emergence of authenticity as an ideal, explore these themes).

Next we come to some chapters that question the very distinction between authentic and inauthentic, on epistemic and ontological grounds. Ontologically, it is simply arbitrary to call x natural and y authentic when, in reality, they may be both made from the same stuff. What makes, say, an original painting authentic and a reproduction inauthentic? Now we get to the shaky epistemology. The original painting is real, says Potter, not because of anything about the painting, but EVERYTHING about our expectations of the painting. Several studies reviewed by Potter, for instance, show that one's appraisal of a thing is often wholly dependent on the background story it is presented with. (Tell everyone a wine is one of a kind, and the bottle of Yellow Tail just tastes better.)

In this sense, Potter suggests that authenticity is somewhat of a sham game. If the search for authenticity was REALLY about authenticity, after all, it would not matter for our enjoyment whether the painting is an original or a reproduction, or the wine is rare and old or common and new. Any search for authenticity that seeks eclecticism, uniqueness, non-conformity, for its own sake isn't a search for authenticity at all, but a drive to feel different, even if it means FORCING oneself to be what one isn't. Ironic, huh?

My favorite chapters are six (Vote for Me, I'm Authentic) and seven (Culture is for Tourists). In chapter six, Potter is skeptical about whether, despite the lip service, we really desire authenticity in politics. After all, while we like to talk about our desire for straight talk, we still devour the sound bites (especially the gaffes). We could say the media is responsible for this, but Potter reminds us that the only reason the media collects sound bites is because we watch 'em. Chapter seven points out the irony that while progressives used to be cosmopolitan, the age of globalization - a cosmopolitan's dream - has now turned many of them into communitarians. Similar to arguments made in Fish's article "Boutique Multiculturalism" (The Trouble with Principle, Potter makes the point that multiculturalism has somewhat become a caricature of itself: when culture is, as he puts it, treated as a museum piece rather than a way of life that one does rather than watches, it becomes a thin replica of itself. Once again, the quest for authenticity is more about appearances than realities.

Put simply, this is an interesting piece of contrarian writing. I am inclined to agree with most of it and despite minor flaws (I think his interpretation of Rousseau in chapter 1 is a bit off), would recommend it to anyone who wishes to see a dominant cultural assumption challenged a bit.

Full of stuff, but missing stuff
By J. Miller
The Bad: Several of Potter's personal positions go unexamined throughout the writing. The writing itself often feels undirected (and unrelated to the core thesis) from chapter to chapter. And Potter often spends so much time explaining previous findings and other arguments that his actual point gets lost.

The Good: There's a huge amount of stuff in here linking a wide range of philosophers to particular societal behavioral patterns that have played out over the years. I suspect that this book would be more valuable for people than most 100-level philosophy college courses. Really, I loved how much large portions of this book shifted my perspectives so that I could think about things in different ways.

The Ugly: Potter seems to run the entire book without tapping either existentialism or absurdism, which is a bit of a problem as they're directly concerned with answering to what is real about humanity, starting with the basic premise that Existence Precedes Essence (a.k.a. You are as you do, not as you think) and, as Sartre wrote "Hell is other people" not because they don't get the real you, but because maybe they do. Also, Erich Fromm might have been mentioned in passing for his work in Escape From Freedom, but not nearly enough to appropriately reflect his body of work on this topic.

Authenticity Hoax Is Provocative and Lucid Yet Heavily Flawed
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
The Authenticity Hoax is worthy buying for the first 60 pages alone, a concise, exhilarating explanation of the birth of modernity: industrialization, individualism, consumerism and how these elements result in alienation. Some people, Potter point, try to reject modernity and find a romantic and nostalgic solution: reject the modern world and search for authenticity. He points to Rousseau whose works have been misinterpreted to this end.

The problem with Potter's argument is that he lumps all critics of modernity under the same label: "declinists." These are in Potter's mind crackpots. But fringe extremists should not be lumped with political leaders, such as Al Gore and others, under the declinist banner so that Potter can propel his conservative polemic.

I find this gross over simplification and faulty comparison both illogical and insidious propaganda lacking the intellectual rigor for serious debate. And I find it ironic that this kind of intellectual dishonesty (from a writer who knows better) is behind a book that purports to be interested in uncovering a "hoax."

My other criticism is that Potter has not clearly defined "authenticity." He uses the word in so many ways that it almost becomes meaningless; worse, a lot of the chapters have no logical connection to the other as the "authenticity" as a reaction to modernity has no relation to the "authenticity" between art and creativity as discussed in Chapter 3.

As a primer for the birth of modernity, this book is worth getting. But as a polemic that lumps all critics of modernity as charlatans and crackpots, this book fails. A far superior book on the subject of the quest of false authenticity (not even mentioned in Potter's polemic) is David Brooks' satirical Bobos in Paradise.

Final Thoughts:

This is one of the few book's I've recommended in spite of its heavy flaws. This just goes to show that a book that fails as a whole may be worthy because of its parts many of which are convincing as ideas on their own. Probably this book would work better as a collection of separate essays.

Slash, by Slash, Anthony Bozza

From one of the greatest rock guitarists of our era comes a memoir that redefines sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

For the first time ever, Slash tells the tale that has yet to be told from the inside: how the legendary band Guns N' Roses came together, how they wrote the music that defined an era, how they survived insane, never-ending tours, how they survived themselves, and, ultimately, how it all fell apart. Slash is a window into the world of the notoriously private guitarist and a front seat on the roller-coaster ride that was one of history's greatest rock 'n' roll machines, always on the edge of self-destruction, even at the pinnacle of its success. Slash is everything Slash is: funny, honest, ingenious, inspiring, jaw-dropping . . . and, in a word, excessive.

pretty good junk
By electra lebeau
I could not resist this book. I can't believe I dropped the cash, but I did, and then spent all day today reading it. I just finished it.

First, a short history of my fandom--I was a GnR fan when I was a very young teenager, I lived for their videos coming up on MTV, I bought Rip magazine, I saw them at the LA coliseum with my parents. Even though I came from a hippie artsy background, something about them hooked me and I became a slutty wannabe rocker chick at 13. I still think they're awesome musically.

OK so my review--a fun read. Full of crazy details about partying, debauchery, excess. Pretty much every detail of GnR's formation, life, and dissolution. Slash's voice is pretty brash and honest. I trusted him, I trusted that he was always telling his truth and trying to be objective, and he's pretty careful about not trying to paint W. Axl like an as***le, and even praising him quite a bit. I skimmed some parts at the end because I don't care that much about all the various boys and the details of their beefs, and Velvet Revolver is not interesting to me. I would have liked more personal stuff, more stuff about sex and romance and artistic inspiration and less about this and that manager.

My main criticism is extremely lazy editing. I am not nitpicky about this stuff, but I swear man, there were some retarded sentences in this book, and a bunch of typos and inconsistencies, as well as structural issues. I was like, could they not pay someone an extra $100 to do a final proofread? For god's sake, when I pay $30 for a book I expect it to be coherent. I know, it's not fine literature, but sheesh. Also, there were times when the 'voice' was so clearly not Slash's it was almost comical, it was occasionally haughty and erudite all the sudden, forcing you to remember that it ghostwritten or cowritten or whatever you call it. But mostly it was totally fun and Slash is a riot, although I'm never going to be his girlfriend, or roommate! Pretty amazing he lived through all that excess. God must have spared him in hopes of a GnR reunion...

Introspective talented guy who just happens to be an `eternal teenager`
By George M.
While Saul Hudson (Slash) turns out to be a warm and friendly, introspective talented guy who just happens to be an `eternal teenager` with a few idiotic premises, I'm going to drop one rating star on this oversized treatment of his life because of narrative repetition. We get it that he was heavily into booze and opiates all through his youth and adulthood until age 41, a year before this 2007 autobio ends. There is a solid 30% of the book describing the details of how the music was created through chaos and the amazing GNR story from top to bottom -- which is done very well -- and his unique upbringing by his very talented parents. But most of it is saturated with continuous drug exploits, each of which had a sameness to them. Drugs were a big part of the rock star image back in the day and these guys were all throwbacks; I have no argument about what they did or didn't do to party. That's life. The reader does realize this is a big part of Slash's life story, and he does clean up at the very end as the Velvet Revolver stage emerges, but Saul's booze-to-heroin-and-vice-versa addiction cycle is so repetitious in the book's pacing and so similar each time he describes it, that his narrative drags because you've heard it many times already. Coupled with the manuscript's long length, it did get a little monotonous. However, if you hang in there to the end as I did, you will discover a truly compassionate, intelligent, thoughtful man with the bright spirit of a great musician!

Great book from a great artist
By Toby
I would recommend this book to anyone who has had or has issues with drugs. Anyone who is a guitar player, who likes gnr who loves slash or looking to be entertained by some great stories. In this book slash let's us all in on his experiences as a kid all the way into his adult life. This is a very intimate book with a legends perspective. Thanks for the awesome read slash!!

How to Read Novels Like a Professor: A Jaunty Exploration of the World’s Favorite Literary Form, by Thomas C. Foster

Of all the literary forms, the novel is arguably the most discussed . . . and fretted over. From Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote to the works of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and today's masters, the novel has grown with and adapted to changing societies and technologies, mixing tradition and innovation in every age throughout history.

Thomas C. Foster—the sage and scholar who ingeniously led readers through the fascinating symbolic codes of great literature in his first book, How to Read Literature Like a Professor—now examines the grammar of the popular novel. Exploring how authors' choices about structure—point of view, narrative voice, first page, chapter construction, character emblems, and narrative (dis)continuity—create meaning and a special literary language, How to Read Novels Like a Professor shares the keys to this language with readers who want to get more insight, more understanding, and more pleasure from their reading.

Didn't learn much about how to read a novel
By R. Lewis
I loved Professor Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines, but this second installment feels more like a sequel than a standalone guide. The chapters here read like "leftovers" for what he didn't cover in the previous work. For instance, an entire chapter is dedicated to the literary importance of chapter breaks in reading novels--not exactly groundbreaking stuff.

Further, the information in the book could be presented in about 30 pages. The information is presented in the first paragraph of each chapter, propped up with about 9 pages of fluff and discussion of specific novels, then summarized in the concluding paragraph. Highlighting the key points and skipping the fluff, I made it through this book in about two hours.

Do yourself a favor and pick up How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines if you really want to learn a thing or two about reading literature.

a clear voice
By LMPMG
As a high school English teacher with two small children, I rarely get a chance to read a book for pleasure--let alone finish one. Amazingly, I read both of Foster's guides this summer. Each was a palatable presentation of issues surrounding literature in general and the novel in particular. He has a clear "voice" allowing me to imagine being back at a university lecture again--one of my favorite places to be! While other texts may seem more "scholaraly" (i.e. "dry"), Foster has a really accessible style for high school students, undergrads, and the interested public at large.

Not the "How To" Guide I Expected.
By Mrs. B
Two stars for the conversational tone and for the occasional humorous bits, but truth be told, this book drove me crazy. I expected a "How To" (as the title explicitly suggests). Instead, it was an agonizing, self-important collection of mini literary analyses. In each chapter, Foster makes a blanket, generalized statement, and then spends the next ten pages listing various novels which utilize said statement. I've read most of the literature he discusses, but in a few cases he actually gives away the premise -- or worse, the climax! -- of some books I'd been wanting to read. Infuriating.

Not only that, but who cares? I don't want to read a bunch of novel-specific mini essays -- I already have enough of those to grade. This is not at all what it purports to be. A lengthy list of everything Foster has ever read, sure; an instruction manual it is not.
