Lovely vignettes

This book was pretty, and had some lovely vignettes pictured, but I was hoping for more depictions of complete rooms and designer attributions. It seemed like an expanded version of Ms. Hoffman's Bliss Victoria magazine. I felt like I had eaten the salad and was still waiting for the main course.

Close, But No Cigar

Having read and treasured "Gracious Tables", I expected more from this book. While there are a few really nice photographs and some decent commentary, it just seemed to fall short of the grandeur of "Gracious Tables" which I recommend often and use for personal entertaining inspiration. Phyllis Hoffman has exquisite taste, and I would like to see a lot more of it through lavish pictorials in her books.

The Olympic dreams of teenaged equestrian Annemarie Zimmer end when her beloved horse, Harry, injures her and destroys himself in a jumping accident. In the agonizing aftermath, she gives up riding and horses entirely. Two decades later, she returns to her family's horse farm a divorcee, with her troubled teenaged daughter, Eve, in tow. There, her gruff Germanic mother struggles to maintain the farm and care for Annemarie's father, who is stricken with ALS. Although Annemarie decides (disastrously) to manage the farm's business, her attention quickly turns to an old and ostensibly worthless horse with the same rare coloring as Harry. Her long-denied passion for riding reawakens as she tracks the horse's identity and eventually discovers it to be Harry's younger brother. She must heal both horse and herself as she struggles with her father's deterioration, Eve's rebellion and her attraction to both the farm's new trainer and her childhood sweetheart Dan. Impulsive and self-absorbed, Annemarie isn't always likable, but Gruen's portrait of the stoic elder Zimmers is beautifully nuanced, as is her evocation of Eve's adolescent troubles. Amid this realistically complex generational sandwich, the book's appealing horse scenes—depicted with unsentimental affection—help build a moving story of loss, survival and renewal.

Suddenly, Annemarie is bombarded with all sorts of emotions and responsibilities, including the rekindling of an old romance and the discovery of a broken-down horse that looks remarkably like Highland Harry. Fans of Nicholas Evans' The Horse Whisperer (1995) and Jessica Bird's impressive debut, Leaping Hearts (2002), will also enjoy this emotion-packed book, which is so exquisitely written it's hard to believe that it's also a debut. The accident, then three dominoes fall

Annemarie’s life through the first three chapters. Then she is left to cope for the next eighteen chapters with the consequences, the fallout, the bad decisions, the non-decisions, the foibles and fumbles of her mid-thirties years. Ride it out, Annemarie, and learn about Pappa, about Mutti, about Eva, about Dan, and eventually about yourself. Things the reader knew by the fifth chapter, Annemarie learns by the end. We learn to watch for the same symptoms in our own life-illnesses. Her “litany of disasters is like an Ohrwurm,” a tune you hear over and over again in your ear, an undying repetition of the same tune, perhaps in a different key in later chapters, but the theme rides up over itself repeatedly into our consciousness. We cannot believe that the woman, otherwise sentient and thoughtful, can remember so vividly and still be so forgetful. It stretched the suspension of my unbelief from time to time, but Annemarie is my Schatzlein, too. My eye, along with Mutti’s, turns away, but my heart never gave up on her. She reminds me too strongly of people I love, and even of myself at times. Fine writing, evocative, penetrating, and finally true.

Little girls and their horses

I am bothered by the first chapter where the horse, in organized competition, jumped over the fence and landed his full weight on his fetlock which shattered and sent his rider, a little girl, into a coma and body cast for months. I was glad that the girl didn't jump to her feet hollaring "That was fun! Let's do it again!" And so the story is committed to the question, what happens when she has a little girl of her own who grows up dreaming of a horse of her own? Just to narrow her choices she returns to her parents' horse-riding academy where her dad is dying and her mother never understood why she didn't saddle up at her earliest opportunity. I mean what for God's sake is wrong with this girl? And then, get a grip, she meets a horse identical to the one who died in chapter one. Spooky.

I loved Water For Elephants and I was thrilled to find Riding lessons... until I read passed the exciting opening chapters and discovered the astonishingly unlikable protagonist and her astonishingly unlikable actions. A writer of comedy she is not; at turning off readers she is quite good. Until I find a reason not to, when I like a writer for a single book I buy their other books, those past and those to come. Sara Gruen lost me with this one.

It's great to see a book about a band written in their own words. It has been on heck of a ride for RCHP and even if you are a hardcore fan, you will have insight into this band that you never had before. The photographs are incredible, but the band member comments and stories really make them take a back seat. You absolutely cannot go wrong buying this book. You will be entertained and will learn a lot about a wonderful band who have seen and done it all....Bravo, Peppers :)

Better Than the Books

Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses definitely translates well into Manga. I've read the first three books in her series, and reading all the meticulously described clothing gets kind of old. Not to mention how after a while it just feels like overused goth sterotypes in her written works. I was worried that the Manga wouldn't be better than the novels. I was wrong.

The Manga has a good flow, it's cute and funny. It introduces a lot of new characters, meaning it isn't necessary to have read Schreiber's Vampire Kisses novels - so far Alexander, Raven and Becky are the only characters to get lots of play in both the novels and Manga. The art is good (although that's coming from someone who's never read Manga before).

The length was the only part I could fault. It was a very quick read, and it didn't feel like it got deep enough into the story, although it did set up a good foundation and background.

Great Art, Good Find.

Raven has an idyllic relationship with her boyfriend, Alexander. The one catch--they can only be outside at night, because he's a vampire. This fact doesn't deter the Gothic sixteen year-old Raven, in fact, she wishes she was a vampire herself! Their cemetery escapes are abruptly halted one night when they encounter four upturned graves, and Alexander finds a toy from his past...

I'm pretty new to the world of manga--even graphic novels, and this one was the first one I ever bought. It didn't leave me very disappointed, except for the size of the book. I really wish it was longer, because by the time I really got to know the characters it was nearly done [I have yet to read the series this is based on]. Also, the size of the book didn't let the story develop, and like the characters, by the time I got into the story it was nearly done. However, the art is really nice, and it added a lot to the plot.

Superb analysis

Fischer presents a detailed and trenchant look at the problems of historical explanation in this fine book. It is certainly one of the best history books I've ever read, although it's not a history book per se, since it's really a critique of the different explanations historians use. Fischer discusses probably about a hundred or more of these, so you probably won't be able to remember them all, but if nothing else, you'll be more alert to the more common and egregious types of historical errors, and overall, the book is a useful analysis and reminder of the problems and difficulties of writing history. In that regard, it's still a very interesting and worthwhile book.
Some of the fallacies I already knew from philosophy, such as the pathetic fallacy, the fallacy of composition, the post hoc fallacy, and so on, which are already well known. But then there are plenty of others with more abstruse names, such as the "the fallacy of the hypostatized proof." My one complaint enters here, since Fischer would have benefited from a knowledge of logic and philosophy, since he sometimes gives names to fallacies that are well known in logic and philosophy by a different name.
But overall, this is one of the best books on the methods and philosophy of history I've read, and it should probably be required reading for every student of history and professional historian alike.

An Indispensable Book for the Serious Writer

I've read this book cover to cover once and dipped into it on average once a month over the ten years since I first found it. It sits on my shelf with my other "correctives", such as Orwell's "Politics and the English Language". Fischer makes the same points about rhetoric as Orwell at greater length and with far more wit. But, Orwell is the better writer.
Yes, as one reviewer says, Fischer rants a bit, but amusingly and with dead-on quotations from his victims. One will think twice about the errors Fischer cites, if for no other reason than to avoid Fischer's next edition.
Fischer is quite even handed. The first felon he cites was a professor of mine -- and Fischer's -- as an undergraduate. A more generous critic and historian -- and human being -- one won't find. But there he is.
I cannot think of a better gift for anyone who takes persuasive prose seriously. No writer should be without it.

A Critical Analysis

David Hackett Fischer's thesis is that there is a tacit and analyzable logic of historical thought and that historians can improve their historical thinking by applying this logic to their work. Historians' Fallacies is a successful attempt to make history a discipline better governed by reason. Fischer notes that history is mainly a problem-solving discipline; the historian asks pertinent questions and then develops a logical paradigm to answer them. He acknowledges that history will never be an exact science but it is his goal, by a careful examination of common historical fallacies, to develop a type of logic. Method is necessary in history, and logic makes a method more rigorous and useful. The historian must follow rules to write good, "scientific," history.
Fischer reveals his ultimate goal in his conclusion. He discusses the goals of history and makes an eloquent apology for the historian. He astutely notes that social scientists have never found a justification for history, making illogical arguments to justify their interest in the past. Calling history "fun," saying that history should be studied because it "is there," and stating "everyone needs to know facts" are three poor reasons for a defense of history. Likewise, claiming history provides a creative outlet and that it could prove useful for the future are spurious speculations, at best.
Fischer's apology of history explains that as history becomes more logical, it becomes more useful to society. History can clarify the contexts of contemporary social problems and can help with forecasting, allowing us to discuss future issues before they arrive. History offers theoretical knowledge, helping social scientists understand past conditions that best brought, say, stability and peace. A recognition of these conditions could help calm today's times. History helps people understand who they are, and by giving them an identity, frees them from the tyranny of the short-sighted present. Most importantly, history helps people conceptualize today's problems in today's terms. Effective solutions to problems in the past could well prove disastrous if applied to similar problems today, and an understanding of history lessens this threat. Logical history is necessary to useful history; the two are inseparable.
Fischer's self-proclaimed reason for writing this book was the lack of logical analysis in history. He believes that many historians hold a bizarre hatred towards logic, known as "misology." Despite this anti-intellectual attitude by historians, the use of history as an academic discipline and a social science demands a logical and scientific approach. The analytical philosophy of history is helpful for developing historical thought, but insufficient to actually create the logic that historians need. Fischer takes that next step in his book.
Fischer explains his thesis by taking the reader through the three major steps of a historian's method: inquiry, explanation, and argument. Inquiry begins every legitimate historical endeavor. Thus, the historian must seek to ask questions in the right way, while carefully verifying significant facts. The field of explanation consists of generalizations, narration, causation, motivation, composition, and false analogy. Finally, within the field of argument, there are fallacies of semantical distortion and fallacies of substantive distraction. In each category he discusses various fallacies, often in great detail. His book discusses over one hundred different logical fallacies, and he does not discriminate among giving specific examples from a vast variety of works. These specific examples make logical ideas that seem abstract at first easy to understand. At the end of each chapter, Fischer follows the logical messes by a clean-up attempt where he briefly writes suggestions towards methods that are more logical than those of the historians he has attacked.
A narrow thesis binds the book together, but history is not lacking in poor historians, so the examples come from all of Western history, keeping the reader involved. Fischer's prose is crisp and he tends to throw in delightful phrases to keep the tone light, such as, "a rathole of metaphysical speculation," or a "literary monstrosity." His use of specific and amusing examples prevent the vast number of logical terms from becoming tedious. No holds are barred: Fischer holds high standards for the historian-and rightly so, judging from his presuppositions-and he expects history to be logical and done in a correct manner. This book probably made him few friends, for he attacks contemporaries in his field with the same vigor that he attacks the virulent racist of ages past.
Fisher's major contribution, however, does not come from his deconstruction of others' historical analyses, though this is the majority of the book. At the end of each chapter, he includes concise summaries that offer advice to the historian wanting to avoid the previous logical fallacies. His deconstruction is vital to actually view bad history in progress. But his constructive suggestions are excellent for those who would write good history. His summaries are excellent in understanding exactly what he wants from a logical historical thought. Historians who consciously use his positive suggestions, while avoiding the logical fallacies he mentions will find themselves on the right track to creating works with significance. A sound and logical structure is necessary is history. Too many problems occurred in the past because of a misconstrued construction of previous events, and Fischer takes a giant step towards limiting the same mistakes.

I just ordered 5 of these books this week after borrowing my friends copy. How refreshing to have a "how-to" book that is actually fun to read! My nieces are adults with homes of their own and I know they will thoroughly enjoy and benefit from the practical and updated info provided.

A wise informative book full of good humor

This is a book about wood that will amaze you, inform you, make you wise and make you laugh. Where else, between two covers could you hope to learn about the history of the catapult, the worlds largest wooden airplane, a model city built of 2 million toothpicks, how a grand piano is made, the world championship belt sander races, and much, much more. On top of that you will get more solid, well-informed information about wood and trees than you ever thought you'd want to know. And you'll keep reading right to the end because it's beautifully and smoothly written and great fun throughout.

Who knew?!?

Spike Carlsen took a topic that could have been as exciting as, well watching wood grow, carved it into a well written story, with lots of humor and tales of how us humans---our very society itself---would not, could not be the same as it is today without this precious resource. This book, and the folks in it (and their unique personalities), and the woods themselves (each exotic specimen having its own incomparable story) is written with the same reverence an author would bring to a well researched and documented historical novel. He explains in exquisite, easy to read detail why certain woods are used for specific applications and how highly skilled craftsmen produce one of a kind pieces, which because they are made from material that were once alive, have taken on a life of their own. Great book I know will enjoy as much as I have!

Characters and Characteristics of Wood and the People Who Love It

I noticed this book in the new release section of my local bookstore and picked it up to take a look-see and I am glad that I did! This book truly was a fun and enjoyable read. It is broken down into chapters that talk about different types of wood, it's uses and qualities which turn out to be infinitely varied and really interesting. And just as interesting are the stories of the people, the cultures and even the author who we get to learn about in this book. I really enjoyed picking this book up learning about table sander races, maple bats, how Venice was built, bow and arrows, mysteries and miracles.

I am not a wood worker and before I read this book I would never have thought to have listed "wood" as a hobby or interest but after reading this I realize we all are. And I already caught myself looking at the wood of my cello which I don't think I had ever done before and thought about the chopsticks I used last night. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys "characters" because this book is full of them- the people and the wood kind. The book is conversational and you read it that way; you also learn a few things along the way. Whether you are wood worker or just a curious kind of person.

Mike Linderman does an excellent job of identifying the issues that parents and teens face, and then he actually gives step by step solutions. Every friend of mine who has a teen is recieving this book for Christmas this year... I don't ever suggest 'How to' books to anyone, but this one is different; it is a must read if you are raising children.

About the Author

Michael Curtis is professor emeritus of political science at Rutgers University and has taught at several other institutions, including Yale University and Cornell University. He has written and edited more than fifteen books in the fields of comparative politics, political theory, and Middle East affairs.

A wonderful collection

This is the first volume in a two-volume set (Great Political Theories V.2: A Comprehensive Selection of the Crucial Ideas in Political Philosophy from the French Revolution to Modern Times) that includes excerpts from the most important political thinkers in world history. Each important thinker such as Plato or Machiavelli is included and each is adorned with a short biography and a piece of their most important contribution. This volume begins in the 5th century B.C or thereabouts and comes up to the mid 18th century. A very good selection of thinkers, all the most important ones are here. This is a great introduction to the history of Political theory and political philosophy, a great achievement and also a wonderful place for anyone interested in the history of philosophy or western thought to begin.

Highlights from Some of History's Most Important Thinkers

For as long as there has been recorded history, philosophers have attempted to discern how societies are governed best. This volume is an anthology of classic writings in political theory covering the time from the ancient Greeks to the eighteenth century and includes essays by Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, Aquinas, Locke, and many other of the most eminent thinkers in world history.

The book contains an introduction that describes some of the issues that political philosophy sets out to address and looks at how it does so. There are chapters in the book on Greece, Rome, Christianity, the Renaissance, the Reformation, constitutionalism, and many more, and each chapter also has an introduction that precedes the writings.

Oligarchy, monarchy, democracy, and constitutionalism have been advocated by different philosophers down through the ages, and essays here attempt to assert the merits of each. Among the other topics examined are Epicureanism and Stoicism, divine right, the role of religion and how changes in religion effect change in politics, power and its limits (and the related issue of obedience and the right of resistance), and the separation of powers in a governmental system.

Many thoughts expressed here are timeless while others have been eclipsed. There are also numerous incisive observations about life and the human condition. "The Great Political Theories" is a superb collection of essays, and I look forward to reading the second volume of this two-part series.
