The summa of a singularity
By Shalom Freedman
This is one of the master's most accessible works. Kierkegaard takes a summary look at his life- work at what he has tried to achieve as a writer. His contention is that from the beginning all his masks and poses, all his ironic gestures were made for one purpose only to waken Christendom to the meaning of what it is to be a true Christian. The life example is the teaching, and the teaching is of an attempt to inwardly relate to God, and live his life as life of total dedication to God.

One does not have to be a Christian to be moved by the example, by the great power of mind, by the sense of play with literary forms, by the gift of language, by the originality in thought, and by the unique way of making his own story into literature.

KIERKEGAARD EXPLAINS WHAT LAY BEHIND HIS AUTHORSHIP
By Steven H Propp
Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author, who was the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote many other books, including Philosophical Fragments, Fear & Trembling; The Sickness Unto Death, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Attack upon Christendom, The Concept of Irony, The Concept of Dread, Training in Christianity, Christian Discourses, Either/Or, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this book [written in 1848, but only published posthumously], “In my career as an author, a point has now been reached where it is permissible to do what I feel a strong impulse to do and so regard as my duty---namely, to explain once and for all, as directly and frankly as possible, what is what: what I as an author declare myself to be… There is a time to be silent and a time to speak. So long as I considered the strictest silence my religious duty I strove in every way to preserve it… What I have done in that way has been misunderstood, has been explained as pride, arrogance, and God knows what…

“But the reason I considered silence my duty was that the authorship was not yet at hand in so complete a form that the understanding of it could be anything but misunderstanding. The contents of this little book affirm, then, what I truly am as an author, that I am and was a religious author, that the whole of my work as an author is related to Christianity, to the problem ‘of becoming a Christian,’ with a direct or indirect polemic against the monstrous illusion we call Christendom, or against the illusion that in such a land as ours all are Christians of a sort…

“What I write here is for orientation. It is a public attestation; not a defense or an apology. In this respect, truly, if in no other, I believe that I have something in common with Socrates… It goes without saying that I cannot explain my work as an author wholly, i.e., with the purely personal inwardness in which I possess the explanation of it. And this in part because I cannot make public my God-relationship… I cannot wish… to obtrude upon any one what concerns only my private person---though naturally there is much in this which for me serves to explain my work as an author.”

He wonders, “What does it mean that all these thousands and thousands call themselves Christians as a matter of course?...People who perhaps never once enter a church, never think about God, never mention His name except in oaths! People upon whom it has never dawned that they might have any obligation to God… yet all these people, even those who assert that no God exists, are all of them Christians, call themselves Christians, are recognized as Christians by the State, are buried as Christians by the Church, are certified as Christians for eternity!” (Pg. 22-23)

He explains, “Assuming that Christendom is a prodigious illusion, that it is a vain conceit for the many who call themselves Christians, there seems to be every probability that the illusion we are now talking about is exceedingly common… So if a religious author wishes to deal with this illusion, he must be at the same time an aesthetic and a religious author. But one thing above all he must not forget… that what must come decisively to the fore is the religious. The aesthetic works remain only a means of communication; and for those who may possibly need it… it serves as a proof that it is impossible to explain the religious production by the notion that the author has become older; for it is in fact simultaneous, and surely one has not grown older simultaneously.” (Pg. 32-33) He adds , “So then when a religious author … whose all-absorbing thought is the task of becoming a Christian would do all that he possibly can to make people take notice… he must begin as an aesthetic writer and up to a definite point he must maintain this role. But there is necessarily a limit; for the aim of it is to make people take notice…” (Pg. 38-39)

He admits, “If Copenhagen ever has been of one opinion about anybody, I venture to say that it was of one opinion about me, that I was an idler, a dawdler… a frivolous bird, intelligent, perhaps brilliant, witty, &c.---but as for ‘seriousness,’ I lacked it utterly. I represented… the subtlest form of pleasure-seeking… on the other hand, I was prodigiously witty and interesting. When I look back upon that time, I am almost tempted to make some sort of apology to the people… in the community.” (Pg. 50-51)

He summarizes, “now as for me, the author, what… is my relation to the age? Am I perhaps the ‘Apostle’? Abominable! … I am a poor insignificant person. Am I then the teacher, the educator? No, not that at all; I am he … whose authorship expresses what it is to be educated to the point of becoming a Christian… but I am not a teacher, only a fellow student.” (Pg. 75)

He states, “Before my real activity as an author began there was an occurrence… I cannot elucidate this … more particularly… I can only beg the reader not to think of revelations or anything of the sort, for with me everything is dialectical.” (Pg. 83)

He says, “To become a crowd, to collect a crowd about one, is on the contrary to affirm the distinctions of human life. The most well-meaning person who talks about these distinctions can easily offend an individual. But then it is not the crowd which possesses power, influence, repute, and mastery over men, but it is in the invidious distinctions of human life which despotically ignore the single individual as the weak and impotent, which in a temporal and world interest ignore the eternal truth---the single individual.” (Pg. 118-119)

For anyone wanting to know more about Kierkegaard, this book will be “must reading” (even if one suspects a bit of “revising history” in his account).

Cities of God: The Real Story of How Christianity Became an Urban Movement and Conquered Rome, by Rodney Stark

How did the preaching of a peasant carpenter from Galilee spark a movement that would grow to include over two billion followers? Who listened to this "good news," and who ignored it? Where did Christianity spread, and how? Based on quantitative data and the latest scholarship, preeminent scholar and journalist Rodney Stark presents new and startling information about the rise of the early church, overturning many prevailing views of how Christianity grew through time to become the largest religion in the world.

Drawing on both archaeological and historical evidence, Stark is able to provide hard statistical evidence on the religious life of the Roman Empire to discover the following facts that set conventional history on its head:

  • Contrary to fictions such as The Da Vinci Code and the claims of some prominent scholars, Gnosticism was not a more sophisticated, more authentic form of Christianity, but really an unsuccessful effort to paganize Christianity.
  • Paul was called the apostle to the Gentiles, but mostly he converted Jews.
  • Paganism was not rapidly stamped out by state repression following the vision and conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine in 312 AD, but gradually disappeared as people abandoned the temples in response to the superior appeal of Christianity.
  • The "oriental" faiths—such as those devoted to Isis, the Egyptian goddess of love and magic, and to Cybele, the fertility goddess of Asia Minor—actually prepared the way for the rapid spread of Christianity across the Roman Empire.
  • Contrary to generations of historians, the Roman mystery cult of Mithraism posed no challenge to Christianity to become the new faith of the empire— it allowed no female members and attracted only soldiers.

By analyzing concrete data, Stark is able to challenge the conventional wisdom about early Christianity offering the clearest picture ever of how this religion grew from its humble beginnings into the faith of more than one-third of the earth's population.

From Booklist
Contemplating the rapid spread of early Christianity, Lucian the Martyr marveled in the fourth century that "almost the greater part of the world is now committed to this truth, even whole cities." To explain Christianity's remarkable success in capturing the cities of the Roman Empire, Stark deploys an empirical social science that exposes the flaws in previous historical theorizing. By parsing records of church construction, inscriptions on tombs, and names on imperial contract permits, Stark converts plausible conjectures into testable hypotheses about the growth of Christianity in the 31 largest Roman cities. And while some of the statistically validated hypotheses fit within conventional wisdom, others compel fresh thinking. The traditional belief that Christianity spread through mass conversion, for instance, gives way to a numerically substantiated dynamics of person-to-person conversion. And despite recent acclaim for the Gnostics as the true early Christians, the evidence links the Gnostic impulse to dying pockets of stubborn paganism, not the rising new faith. Like Stark's Victory of Reason (2005), this book will spark controversy--the kind that attracts curious readers. Bryce Christensen

A Thorough Statistical Analysis of the Rise of Christianity
By George R Dekle
A lot of historical scholarship consists of perceiving historical phenomena and then working out plausible explanations for the phenomena. Such explanations are largely untested, but they often become accepted as "historical truth" when they are little more than "just so stories." The example from the final chapter of Schlesinger's "huge upswell" of popular democracy during the era of Andrew Jackson is a case in point. Going back and counting the votes from previous elections shows that the voter turnout in the Jackson era was actually lower than many previous elections.

It is all well and good to devise hypotheses to explain historical events, but they should not be accepted as truth unless they can be tested. Stark undertakes to test a number of historical hypotheses relating to the rise of early Christianity, and does so through statistical analysis. This entails a lot of spadework, but the results are worthwhile.

A lot of Stark's findings validate many of the hypotheses of previous scholarship, and this should lead to no controversy. A lot of his findings invalidate the hypotheses of "cutting edge" Biblical scholarship, and this should mean that Stark's book won't be profiled on prime time television.

Some of Stark's more interesting findings are: (1) Orthodox Christianity, not "Gnosticism" or some other "Lost Christianity" was the original form of the religion. (2) "Gnosticism" was a loopy, lunatic fringe blend of paganism and Christianity. (3) Orthodox Christians did not persecute paganism into oblivion. (4) Pentecost most likely did not result in 3,000 newly baptized Christians, but simply 3,000 wet Jews and pagans. (5) Paul did not invent Christianity and actually had very little to do with the spread of Christianity throughout the Empire. (6) Paul was much more successful in converting Jews to Christianity than in converting Gentiles. (7) Hellenized Jews provided large numbers of Christian converts during the first four centuries of Christianity.

Stark's writing, as always, is entertaining, educational, and thought provoking.

Good on Paganism but Weak on Judaism and Paul
By Daniel C. Harlow
Rodney Stark, a sociologist who in the 1990s began applying the tools of his craft to the study of early Christianity, is always worth reading. Cities of God is an interesting, provocative, and often illuminating study of the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. It applies the methods of quantitative analysis to the geography, urbanism, and other aspects of the Christian movement and its major forerunners and competitors. Most of Stark's conclusions are neither new nor radical, but they are significant because they are supported by modes of analysis not typically employed by biblical scholars or historians of antiquity.

Among Stark's CONVINCING CONCLUSIONS:

(1) Christianity spread not through mass conversions but through the example and witness of rank-and-file believers who traveled for commercial and other reasons. (2) Sea travel was more important than Roman roads in facilitating the spread of Christianity and other eastern religions. (3) Christianity found especially fertile soil in large cities--especially port cities and Hellenized cities. (5) Cybele and Isis worship were important stepping stones--ritual, emotional, and intellectual--for many pagans who came to embrace Christianity. (5) Gnosticism (a dubious category) and Demiurgical religions were neither offshoots of Judaism nor early and widespread forms of Christianity but amalgams of paganism and Greek philosophy (especially Platonism) that had little appeal to most Greco-Romans, whether Christian or pagan. (6) Mithraism was never a serious competitor to Christianity but a male-dominated army cult with little appeal to the masses. (7) Constantine was not responsible for the triumph of Christianity. (8) It was the emperor Julian (the "Apostate") who exacerbated tensions between pagans and Christians. (9) Paganism did not end quickly but persisted into the fifth and sixth centuries.

Much less convincing--because they are not supported with much argument or evidence--are Stark's hypothesis cum theses concerning Judaism and the mission of Paul.

Among Stark's MOST DUBIOUS AND LEAST SUPPORTED CLAIMS:

(1) JUDAISM WAS A MISSIONARY RELIGION (pp. 6-7; etc). This claim is weakly supported by appeals to a few Old Testament verses and a statement of the Medieval Jewish philosopher Maimonides. It is not backed up by any evidence from Jewish sources of the Greco-Roman period and fails to consider the best scholarship on the subject (e.g., Martin Goodman 1994, Mission and Conversion; Shaye Cohen 1999, The Beginnings of Jewishness; Scott McKnight 1991, Light among the Gentiles: Jewish Missionary Activity in the Second Temple Period).

(2) PAUL DIRECTED MOST OF HIS MISSIONARY EFFORTS AT DIASPORA JEWS AND NOT GENTILES (pp. 120-139). This claim is belied by the testimony of Paul's own letters. It relies on an uncritical reading of the book of Acts. Paul certainly attended synagogues (see 2 Cor. 11:24) and no doubt evangelized Jews when he did (see 1 Cor. 9:19-21), but Gentiles were his first and primary target audience (e.g., Gal. 1:15-17; 2:7-9; Rom. 11:13). His letters simply to not reflect that he had spent the prior decade or two evangelizing Jews.

(3) PAUL DEMANDED THAT JEWISH CHRISTIANS CEASE OBSERVING THE LAW (pp. 130, 169). This claim is asserted without argument or appeal to evidence. It has no basis in either Paul's letters or even the book of Acts. Indeed, Acts suggests that did not make such demands of Jewish believers in Jesus (see Acts 21:20-26). Paul opposed forcing Gentile believers in Jesus to practice Torah, but no source tells us that he told Jewish believers to stop observing it. Paul regarded Torah observance as such as a matter of indifference (Gal. 5:5; 6:15; 1 Cor. 7:19). His view was that ritual Torah observance ("the works of the Law") does not make anyone, Jew or Gentile, members of God's covenant people or secure their final salvation (Galatians 3; Romans 3-4).

(4) JUDAIZING ACTIVITY IN THE 4TH AND 5TH CENTURY PROVES THAT SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS OF JEWS CONTINUTED TO CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY INTO LATE ANTIQUITY (pp. 136-139). What Judaizing activity (following Jewish customs) more likely suggests is the reverse: Judaism (or at least aspects of Jewish observance) continued to attract Christians into late antiquity. Further, in patristic literature the label "Judaizing" often has nothing to do with following Jewish customs; in the writings of some church fathers, it is a polemical label for Christians whose Christology is too "low" or who interpret the Old Testament literally instead of figuratively (see, e.g., Shaye Cohen 1999, The Beginnings of Jewishness; Michelle Murray 2004, Playing a Jewish Game: Gentile Christian Judaizing in the First and Second Centuries C.E.).

(5) ANTI-JUDAISM SUGGESTS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO JUDAISM AND OPPOSITION TO IT (e.g., p. 169). This is not necessarily the case. Like the phenomenon of Judaizing, anti-Judaism need not imply direct contact with or influence from Jews or Judaism. As often as not, it looks like a matter of intra-Christian theological disputes and seems not have been encouraged by non-Christian Jews.

In sum, as a scholar of early Judaism and early Christianity, I find Stark mostly persuasive when he writes about early Christianity's relations to Greco-Roman paganism. But I find him wrongheaded in much of what he says about Judaism and Paul.

Zebidia's review: Beowulf
By Zebidia
Great read. Better than the movie. Norse mythology comes to life in raw, gruesome detail...easier to read than the classic text. Masterfully reworked by Gaiman and Avary, with an even better job of writing done by Caitlin Kiernan. She portrayed an in-depth and intimate understanding of each of the characters, well written!

The Rest of Her Life CD, by Laura Moriarty

In The Rest of Her Life, Laura Moriarty delivers a luminous, compassionate, and provocative look at how mothers and daughters with the best intentions can be blind to the harm they do to one another.

Leigh is the mother of high-achieving, popular high school senior Kara. Their relationship is already strained for reasons Leigh does not fully understand when, in a moment of carelessness, Kara makes a mistake that ends in tragedy—the effects of which not only divide Leigh's family, but polarize the entire community. We see the story from Leigh's perspective, as she grapples with the hard reality of what her daughter has done and the devastating consequences her actions have on the family of another teenage girl in town, all while struggling to protect Kara in the face of rising public outcry.

Like the best works of Jane Hamilton, Jodi Picoult, and Alice Sebold, Laura Moriarty's The Rest of Her Life is a novel of complex moral dilemma, filled with nuanced characters and a page-turning plot that makes readers ask themselves, "What would I do?"

Julia Gibson performs the role of the unappealing Leigh Churchill, mother of popular high school senior Kara. Leigh is as maladjusted as her daughter is well adjusted. When Kara accidentally hits and kills a pedestrian, Leigh longs to support her daughter, but she finds she cant be the fantasy mom shed like to be. Gibson presents Leighs needs and reticence with a continuous whine that makes the listener wish she were more likable. Her husbands matter-of-fact tones effectively contrast the two parents. The listener is finally won over upon coming to an understanding of Lees past. Gibsons portrayal of Leighs cold mother and the callous responses of community members to her speak volumes about the person Leigh has become. Excellent, believable narration
By Jessica Teel
Narrator Julia Gibson is almost too convincing in her spot on depiction of Kansas school teacher Leigh, whose family life is turned upside down when her daughter Kara accidentally runs over a classmate. The tragedy throws Kara into a death spin of guilt, yet affords Leigh the opportunity to mend the deep rift between herself and her daughter. Gibson perfectly navigates Leigh's awkward, strained attempts to connect with her daughter. She is so convincing that listeners will actually cringe at Leigh's bumbling attempts at communication that usually illicit nothing more than contempt or pity from Kara. Gibson is quite skilled at making the book's dialogue come to life. The book is strongest during flashbacks to Leigh's own troubled childhood marred by the cold neglect of her mother who left Kara at age 16 to move alone to California. As the story unfolds, so do Leigh's scars which have led her to inadvertently alienate her own daughter even though she strives to provide her with the love and security so lacking in her own youth. Gibson also voices the teenage characters very realistically without trying too hard to sound young. Listeners will easily find themselves caught up in this family drama about the emotional pains of parenting.

Great family drama
By Jennifer Kline
This book was great, and I couldn't turn it off! I really related to the main character - Leigh, who is a teacher struggling to relate with her daughter. It reminded me so much of the powerlessness you can feel as a parent when trying to communicate with a teenage child. The novel centers around the relationships between mothers and daughters. Leigh's childhood is examined to shed light on her troubles with her own daughter Kara. She vows to love and support her daughter unlike her own abusive mother who abandoned her as a teenager. Inadvertently, she is cold and distant from her daughter. All this changes when Kara accidentally kills another teenage girl in a car accident. The book follows the aftermath of the accident as it affects the whole family. Leigh ends up growing through the tragedy to finally relate to her daughter in a meaningful way, and Kara learns that her mother truly supports and loves her. This book was wonderful as an audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job portraying both the adult and child characters. I really sensed from her voice the hardships of each character as they struggle emotionally. I was definitely drawn into the story, and found myself listening to the book whenever I had free time. I highly recommend this audiobook!

Good

This was my first audio book and I can honestly say it was good. The narriation was excellent. I particularly liked the way the author explained each scene so that my mind could see the characters and the places described. The ending left me wanting to know more of what happened to the title character's family.

A Nail Through the Heart, by Timothy Hallinan

Travel writer Poke Rafferty was good at looking for trouble—so good that he made a little money writing a few offbeat travel guides for the young and terminally bored. But that was before Bangkok stole his heart. Now the expat American is happily playing family with Rose, the former go-go dancer he wants to marry, and with Miaow, the wary street child he wants to adopt. Yet just when everything is beginning to work out, trouble comes looking for Poke in the guise of good intentions. First he takes in Miaow's friend, a troubled and terrifying street urchin named Superman. Then he agrees to find a distraught Aussie woman's missing uncle—and accept an old woman's generous payment to find a blackmailing theif. Soon, these three seemingly disparate events begin to overlap, pulling Poke deeper into dark, unfamiliar terrain. Gradually he realizes that he's been gliding across the surface of a culture he really doesn't understand—and that what he doesn't know is about to hurt him and everyone he loves.

Beautifully crafted, relentlessly paced, A Nail Through the Heart is an exciting and enticing read that will leave readers hungry for more from the gifted Timothy Hallinan.

From Publishers Weekly
Brutal torture and equally brutal empathy define this excellent, if sometimes familiar, thriller from Hallinan (The Bone Polisher). Poke Rafferty, a travel writer turned detective, intends to settle down in Bangkok with his ex-prostitute girlfriend, Rose, and a young urchin, Miaow, when Miaow brings her troubled friend Superman into the household. While dealing with this intrusion, Rafferty takes on dual sleuthing assignments to help pay for adopting Miaow. The first case involves finding Australian Claus Ulrich, a hardcore bondage aficionado. When Rafferty meets the powerful and rich Madame Wing while investigating Ulrich's disappearance, she offers him $30,000 to find an envelope and the Cambodian man who took it. The only catch? If Rafferty opens the envelope, he'll learn information about Madame Wing that will force her to kill him. Rafferty stumbles through the clues like the foreigner he is, always on the outside looking in. Despite an overly leisurely ending, the rich depictions of Bangkok's seedy side recall John Burdett's visceral mysteries. (July)

From Booklist
The author of the 1990s Simeon Grist series returns with a compelling new protagonist: American travel writer Poke Rafferty, who is out to right some serious wrongs on the predatory streets of Bangkok. While attempting to adopt a homeless girl, rescue a potentially murderous urchin known as Superman, and build a lasting relationship with the former bar girl he loves, Poke is pulled into two brutal mysteries. One involves a notorious Khmer Rouge torturer, the other a series of child-porn photos. As he doggedly plumbs these ghastly depths, Rafferty matures from a play-it-as-it-lays layabout into a man willing to meet his lover's culture more than halfway and find his moral compass at a time when the victims can be as guilty as the murderers are innocent. The fact that the referenced pedophile photo series and Phnom Penh torture house both existed heightens the impact of a narrative that's already deeply felt. If this opens a new series, Hallinan is off to a surefooted start with a supporting cast (including Poke's precocious, pugnacious, almost-daughter Miaow) well worth getting to know. Sennett, Frank

It's easy to sneer at mystery/thriller novels
By SW
It's easy to sneer at mystery/thriller novels. It's easy to overlook the craft and effort that goes into books written in this form. But that behavior is stupid and snobbish. Hallinan's novels are accomplished, and -- more important -- fun to read. And I will continue reading them.

Heart-Wrenchingly Beautiful
By T. Baker
I have read every novel this author has written and loved them all, but with "A Nail Through the Heart," a Bangkok tale, Timothy Hallinan has hit a new level in his writing that is simply heart-wrenchingly beautiful. With a somber and poetic use of wit, metaphor and simile, this first story in Hallinan's new Poke Rafferty series is a doozy. All the characters are so clear. All of them have such depth. And thus, long after the book is finished, they still live in my head. And further, because the prose describing Bangkok is so sharp and detailed, I feel as though I was actually there, experiencing all its beauty and its degradation; all its humanity and its juggernaut evil; and all its fatalism and its hope. This is a great story about people and far-away places and how they survive, while still trying to do the right thing.

Play Me, by Laura Ruby

Eddy knows how to play the game.

He is, after all, the writer, director, and cameraman—the mastermind, really—behind the hit online TV show Riot Grrl 16. When it wins a contest to be aired on MTV (and it obviously will—have you seen the competition?), he'll be famous.

Then there's the game of love. Eddy knows all the tricks, and his favorite girls are the ones with the fishnets and cherry lipstick and legs up to there. The ones who know he doesn't make any promises. The ones who are cool with it.

But as graduation looms, everything and everyone starts deviating from Eddy's master script. Never in a million years did he expect to be facing off again with the unapproachable, perfect Lucinda Dulko. For once in his life, he's not in control—and to be with Lucinda, he's willing to get swept up in the game. But what happens to a player when the rules suddenly change?

Can Eddy find a way to win it all?

Or will he get played?

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Set in Ruby's Good Girls (HarperTempest, 2006) universe, this is the story of 18-year-old filmmaker Edward "Eddy" Rochester (named for Orson Welles's version, not Brontë's original), who was raised on cinema by his struggling actress mother. Now she's left the family for a bit part on a formulaic Miami crime show. At the close of senior year, Eddy is not thinking college. His main concerns are making movies (getting MTV to produce Riot Grrl 16 that he and his friends shot) and making moves on girls (lately, the fierce, athletic, unattainable Lucinda Dulko). Normally accustomed to getting girls without getting caught up, he's enthralled. Eventually insecurities and differing game plans for their futures find Eddy in a new role—dumpee. This wrinkle, combined with his AWOL mother and threatened career goals, means an impromptu road trip (important but somewhat tacked on) and serious self-evaluation. Eddy is enjoyable in that charming, self-obsessed, heartbreaker way, and he's flawed and vulnerable enough to be real. While readers will root for Riot Grrl 16's success, what will grab them is the focus on Eddy's relationships—with Lucinda, his mom, his friends (serious Joe, horn-dog video-clerk Rory, faux-punk and bluntly honest Gina), and his family of abandoned men. The best moments involve uncensored Gina or heartbreaking Meatball, Eddy's half brother, who spouts morbid factoids and "dies" various deaths waiting for Eddy to revive him. Pop culture (film related), innuendos, sexual situations (not graphic), and snappy dialogue are all a part of this relationship-centered read.—Danielle Serra, Cliffside Park Public Library, NJ

“Eddy is enjoyable in that charming, self-obsessed, heartbreaker way, and he’s flawed and vulnerable enough to be real.” (School Library Journal)

The Compulsive Reader's Reviews
By The Compulsive Reader
Eddy cares about two things--filmmaking, and his family. Not the slew of girls he's had by his side and lusting after him over the years. To him, they're just looking for a good time, and not anything substantial. But then the unattainable, fierce, and independent Lucinda Dulko comes along and sweeps him off his feet. Suddenly years or meaningless relationships appear to be wasted time. Eddy and Lucinda have something real, something far more important than anything Eddy has ever experienced before. Or so he thought.

Written with wry humor, startling honesty, great emotion and a good dose of irony, Play Me is one knockout of a read. It's not often that female authors dare to tell the story from a male perspective, but Ruby not only accomplishes this, she excels at it. Her talent is not only obvious in the way that she crafts Eddy and his friends' personalities and tendencies, but also in her ability to pull together the multitudes of details, no matter how big or small, to create a singular story. Play Me is a hard and pragmatic look at teen life today, free of euphemisms, fairy tale crafted happy endings, and plotlines that condescend to the reality of being a teen. The result is a read that any teen can feel an immediate connection with.

Heartbreak from a male perspective
By Rachael Stein
Eddy Rochester is a movie fanatic, a wannabe famous filmmaker, and a player. He's figured he's pretty much on the fast track to success with his popular online video series Riot Grrl 16. It's all about him, and the girls love him - at least most of them do. But Lucinda Dulko is different; she's not as easily charmed as Eddy's other conquests. Play Me followes Eddy through his ups and downs with Riot Grrl 16, his relationship with his actress mother, and his various female friends. Eddy has to realize that maybe he's not guaranteed instant success, and that maybe there are other people in the picture besides him.

Laura Ruby weaves and incredibly realistic story in Play Me. Eddy's character is developed so well that I totally felt I could see through his eyes into his life. There's something so believable about Eddy's story that made me want to keep reading. The plot isn't too exciting, but reading this book was such a great experience because I could really feel Eddy's emotions. There aren't many books that I've read that have such a real and honest male protagonist like Eddy. Play Me was a beautifully written and extremely honest story anyone can relate to.

If you're looking for a realistic story to read, Play Me should be your first choice. Fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Catherine Ryan Hyde will also enjoy Laura Ruby's latest novel.

I'm sure you've all seen reviews of this book on other blogs. Eddy isn't really a player--he's more like a normal teenage guy. Play Me was very realistic, witty, and funny. The fact the Eddy wants to be a film maker makes the book much more interesting. The fact that Eddy and his friends know a lot about movies showed that Ruby has a big interest in films, and it really translated into the novel. Laura Ruby proves that no only can she write from a female's perspective but also from a male's and is excellent at it. Play Me was different from other YA books because the ending was realistic--not a happily ever after one. Eddy's character was just amazing--as the other character's--and felt as if he attended my school. The plot line was just great and I definitely recommend this book to anyone. Play Me was nothing short of excellent and is a book that any teen can relate to.

Cartas a Sus Hijos
By Fester
In short, I enjoyed Sr. Ramos' life observations very much but as a reader, felt that he still was not willing to express things that were too close to the bone. I wanted to add that as a bilingual person, I enjoy and respect the lifelong work of Jorge Ramos and look forward to reading his novels and watching him transmit the news nightly. I feel he is a very brave and courageous person to admit certain feelings and continue to lead his life of choice.

The Best Book I Have Ever Read!!!!!!!
By Jorge Siller
What attracted me to purchase the book was the fact the he talks about his children. He mentioned that he wanted to make sure that had the opprtunity to tell his children as much as he could of what they dont know about him so that they get to know him better. Now that i have it, I am almost halfways and I have cried all the way through. He describes his two children, Paola and Nicolas in such a way that I had never read and/or even seen. He is a journalist himself so it is very easy to write and that is what he does but the way he expresses his Love for his two children is just overwhelming and you cant help but cry. I have read the first 8 letters of the 15 letters. The whole book is just AMAZING!!!!!!It is a BIG 10 on a scale of 1 through 10.

Two Histories of England: , by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens

In these two forgotten gems of English literature, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens offer delightful, irreverent histories of their native land.

hen she was only sixteen years old, Jane Austen composed her bitingly satirical History of England for performance in her family's drawingroom. A startling and precocious example of her celebrated wit—not to mention a brilliant social commentary—this lively piece sweeps rapidly across almost four centuries of British monarchy. In rambunctious and wickedly funny prose, Austen's critique spans from Henry IV to Charles I, from Richard III to Mary Queen of Scots, offering a fierce parody of the kind of biased history that young ladies of Austen's time were being forced to study. Reproduced here in its entirety, this is a rare, tantalizing look at the great novelist's budding talent, and an extraordinary bit of literary history that lay unpublished for more than 130 years.

Charles Dickens's A Child's History of England, by contrast, was written and published at the height of its author's considerable fame. A gory and dramatic account, full of villains and heroes, the essay was originally intended as a study-piece for his children, but in fact represented a sly, unconventional countertext to the more straitlaced historical canon. Dickens's exciting, flamboyant narrative is hugely evocative, both of the history he describes and of the time in which he himself was writing.

With an insightful introduction by bestselling historian David Starkey, Two Histories of England brings together, in a single, irresistible volume, these remarkable—and remarkably overlooked—literary treasures by two of the world's most beloved writers.

From Publishers Weekly
Unbeknownst to most readers today, Austen and Dickens each wrote a satiric history of England. Austen's The History of England from the Reign of Henry the 4th to the Death of Charles the 1st—written in 1791 when she was 16—is a deliberate parody of the intellectually vapid histories to which girls of her class were routinely subjected. Reprinted in its entirety, Austen's juvenilia is witty, cold-blooded and contrarian: during Henry V's reign, she writes, Lord Cobham was burnt alive, but I forget what for, and the history's purpose is supposedly to vindicate Mary Queen of Scots and abuse Elizabeth. Dickens was already a bestselling novelist when he published A Child's History of England in the early 1850s, which was part of the British school curriculum for decades; an excerpt appears here. Using plain language, sharp if heavy irony and evocative detail, Dickens is radical and opinionated: Elizabeth is coarse, capricious, and treacherous and James I is a greedy, dirty drunk. Although a knowledgeable introduction by historian and TV presenter Starkey (Elizabeth) offers interesting biographical tidbits and puts each book in its proper context, American readers will find these to be amusing minor works by a pair of English national treasures. Sneaker Wars: The Enemy Brothers Who Founded Adidas and Puma and the Family Feud That Forever Changed the Business of Sport, by Barbara Sm

Sneaker Wars is the fascinating true story of the enemy brothers behind Adidas and Puma, two of the biggest global brands of athletic footwear. Adi and Rudi Dassler started their shoe business in their mother's laundry room and achieved almost instantaneous success. But by the end of World War II a vicious feud had torn the Dasslers apart, dividing their company and their family and launching them down separate, often contentious paths. Out of the fires of their animosity, two rival sneaker brands were born, brands that would revolutionize the world of professional sports, sparking astonishing behind-the-scenes deals, fabulous ad campaigns, and multimillion-dollar contracts for pro athletes, from Joe Namath to Muhammad Ali to David Beckham.

From Publishers Weekly
It's a long road between the Nazi spectacle of Adolf Hitler's 1936 Olympic Games in Munich and the media frenzy of David Beckham's 2007 move to Los Angeles, but there has been one constant during the intervening years of athletic history-sports shoes. This book traces the evolution of Gebrüder Dassler, a Bavarian shoe company founded by two brothers whose vicious feud led to the creation of two rival, iconic businesses: Adidas and Puma. Smit, an international business journalist, delivers a fascinating story of the complicated intrigues in the lives of both companies, as well as the founders and their descendants. The tale encompasses almost ever major sports figure in modern times, from Jesse Owens, (who wore Dassler shoes during the 1936 Games, unaware that the two brothers were members of the Nazi Party), to basketball legend Walt Frazier, whose signature Puma "Clydes" sold "well over one million pairs throughout the Seventies," kick starting the sports shoe-as-fashion statement trend. Overall, Smit provides a necessary account of how the growth in sports-related businesses has moved athletics "from jolly amateurism to unapologetic greed."

“As a history of how so much of the world came to be shod in running shoes, SNEAKER WARS is a book you’ll read at a sprint. Drawing from dozens of interviews and stacks of documents, Ms. Smit reconstructs an anecdote-rich history of competition, commercialism and corruption.” (Wall Street Journal)

“Smit brings a keen reporter’s eye to the schism between Puma and Adidas. The book also ably tells the broader story of the red-hot global sneaker trade.” (Conde Nast Portfolio)

“What does David Beckham’s superstardom have to do with a pair of warring Bavarian brothers in the early 1900s? More than you think, according to this compelling book.” (Time Magazine)

“Barbara Smit deserves high praise.” (Sunday Telegraph)

A View into the world of sports shoes and attire
By Blue Roses
Between the pages of this book lie the family saga of two brothers who ended up being torn apart due to war, personality and family. There is not really a happy ending although there is reconciliation among the posterity. Developing a better shoe and running a company are not necessarily the same thing as the players find out in this biography of two major shoe giant companies: Adidas and Puma. Although the book was good, it felt tedious and drawn out in place. I'm sure the author was trying to make sure that all the major players were included but maybe some of them should have been left out in the editing process. This was an interesting read into the world of sports and the attire accompanying the players and teams. Look for everyone from the soccer great Pele' to David Beckham and Joe Montana. I did appreciate the thoroughness that the author devoted to this work.

Three Stripes. Three Stars
By J. A. Walsh
Three stripes. Three stars.

Smit bills her book, "Sneaker Wars," as the story of the family and corporate competition behind Puma and Adidas, but this is an Adidas book and the story of the legendary footwear house divided. Brother versus brother. Father versus son. France versus Germany. Old World versus New World.

Smit begins with skeletal biographies of the founding Dassler brothers: Adolf (Adidas) and Rudolf (Puma). The brothers worked and lived together, but after a World War II falling out, Rudolf struck out across the river on his own, and a rivalry was born. It was a rivalry that would play out over 50 years and three generations; but, one that was dominated by the Adidas corporation and the Adidas personalities, and they equally dominate Smit's work.

The book follows the Adi/Rudolf split and then move on to the division that emerges within Adidas as Adi's son, Horst, sets up a subsidiary - if often antagonistic - France-based branch. Horst cuts his own deals, sets up his own side businesses to inflate his bottom line, and provides the hustle that takes Adidas from a European sporting goods outfitter to a global fashion empire. But, remaining closely-held for many years by some combination of Dassler family members and confidantes, Adidas is a multi-million dollar conglomerate often operating on a shoestring. The family dynamic provides the arc of conflict that sustains Smit's narrative, and her gracious portrayal of Horst Dassler as a visionary 21st century kind of global businessman in a still-flat world is the center of gravity that grounds the meat of the book's middle portion.

Horst emerges as an almost surreal character: gifted and tireless, but perhaps less than ideal in his moral approach to family and business. The story of Adidas during his life is about a house divided between his operation - run mostly autonomously out of France - and his parents' in Germany.

That division theme runs throughout the narrative as surrounding this interesting portrayal of Horst Dassler are the stories of (earlier on) the drama around the split of his uncle and his father, complete with Nazi intrigue and Olympic escapades; and (later on) the series of ownership and management changes that transitioned Adidas from the small family-owned German cleat maker into one of the Western world's most recognizable and marketable brands, and saw conflict between the Old World ownership and US-based management.

There are side trips off into some interesting characters (Muhammad Ali, Pele, Joe Namath, Kobe Bryant), but these fail to deliver in any meaningful way and it becomes clear that Smit really sees this as a Dassler story. That said, she does avoid focusing even on some of the more controversial elements of the Dassler story, for example, the founding brothers' documented ties to Nazism.

A great read for anyone interested in the evolution of sports marketing.....
I have six competitive brothers, but the Dassler boys take the cake when it comes to being creative and vindictive with one another. Fascinating!
