From Publishers Weekly
Hot off the critical success of Anansi Boys, Gaiman offers this largely disappointing medley that feels like a collection of idea seeds that have yet to mature. Among the ground covered: an old woman eats her cat alive, slowly; two teenage boys fumble through a house party attended by preternaturally attractive aliens; a raven convinces a writer attempting realism to give way to fantastical inclinations. A few poems, heartfelt or playfully musical, pockmark the collection. At his best, Gaiman has a deft touch for surprise and inventiveness, and there are inspired moments, including one story that brings the months of the year to life and imagines them having a board meeting. (September is an "elegant creature of mock solicitude," while April is sensitive but cruel; they don't get along), but most of these stories rely too heavily on the stock-in-trade of horror, sci-fi and fantasy. Gaiman only once or twice gives himself the space necessary to lock the reader's attention.150,000 announced first printing.(Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—In this collection of stories (and a few poems), storytellers and the act of storytelling have prominent roles. The anthropomorphized months of the year swap tales at their annual board meeting: a half-eaten man recounts how he made the acquaintance of his beloved cannibal; and even Scheherazade, surely the greatest storyteller of all, receives a tribute with a poem. The stories are by turns horrifying and fanciful, often blending the two with a little sex, violence, and humor. An introduction offers the genesis of each selection, itself a stealthy way of initiating teens into the art of writing short stories, and to some of the important authors of the genre. Gaiman cites his influences, and readers may readily see the inflection of H. P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury in many of the tales. Horror and fantasy are forms of literature wrought with clichés, but Gaiman usually comes up with an interesting new angle. This collection is more poetic and more restrained than Stephen King's short stories and more expertly written than China Mieville's Looking for Jake (Ballantine, 2005). Gaiman skips along the edge of many adolescent fascinations-life, death, the living dead, and the occult-and teens with a taste for the weird will enjoy this book—Emma Coleman, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Along with his skill as a writer, Neil Gaiman must have some training in critical witchcraft. He has cast quite a spell on reviewers, who throw up their hands trying to categorize the stories in Fragile Things and then bring them together in an almost universal peal of applause. The collection is storytelling at its old-fashioned best, freshened up for the 21st century but drawing heavily on Gaiman's progenitors. Only the San Diego Union-Tribune takes real issue with Gaiman, dubbing him "a bantamweight Poe" while acknowledging a talent that isn't fully on display in this collection. Otherwise, it's smooth sailing for the award-winning British writer.

Typical Gaiman -- which is a very good thing.
By T. Simons
This collection contains exactly the sort of stories that one would expect Neil Gaiman to write -- brilliant, original, imaginative fantasy tales that occasionally make tentative steps across the border into Horror(but never quite cross over). Fantasy, but lyric fantasy, not epic, and grounded in our reality -- there are no hobbits here, and almost all these tales concern fantasy elements that seem to have somehow brushed up against our reality, rather than the reverse.

If you like Neil Gaiman's other works, you'll like these stories; if you don't, you probably won't; if you don't know whether you do or not, but you're interested enough to read Amazon reviews, then this collection provides a magnificent place to start.

I will focus on the flaws, not because the collection is flawed, or because any of these flaws are significant in comparison with the compelling and powerful strengths of the stories, but because the stories are so good that a list of their virtues would become boring ("this story is the best story about this thing since Neil Gaiman's last story about this thing.")

1) Some, most, or perhaps all of these stories have appeared in prior publications; I believe "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch" and "Fifteen Painted Cards from a Vampire Tarot" were in some editions of Smoke and Mirrors, "A Study in Emerald" was available for a long time (if it isn't still) on Neil Gaiman's website, "Harlequin Valentine" has been available as a small illustrated hardcover for a long time now, etc. If you're enough of a Neil Gaiman fan to have tracked down all those disparate stories, though, in all those disparate places, this single volume will probably be a marked convenience.

2) There are stories in here that are unsettling, but none that I would classify as actually *scary* -- the sort of horror, if it can be called horror, that becomes more frightening the more imaginative you are, the way a particularly startling pattern of shadows might terrify a child but have no effect whatsoever on a more rationally-minded adult. Long time readers of Gaiman won't consider this a flaw, but rather a virtue - subtlety is far rarer in fiction these days, and far more difficult to achieve, than simple raw horror - but I mention it as a caveat to the virgin.

3) I personally felt that some of the outside references in the stories fell a bit flat, and a few of the stories fell a bit short of Gaiman's best work. The reworking of Beowulf here ("The Monarch of the Glen") was not as effective as his earlier "Bay Wolf", and felt a bit like a pastiche of Gaiman's other characters, plus Grendel. On the other hand, "The Problem of Susan" may be the most effective and disturbing reworking of a children's story since Gaiman's own "Snow, Glass, Apples" in _Smoke and Mirrors_, and "A Study in Emerald" is simultaneously one of the best Lovecraft pastiches and one of the best Sherlock Holmes pastiche I've ever seen.

The following stories are contained in this collection:

1) An introduction where Gaiman details some background on each of the stories, and includes a short-short story on its own as well (titled "The Mapmaker")

2) A Study in Emerald

3) The Fairy Reel (poem)

4) October in the Chair

5) The Hidden Chamber

6) Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire

7) The Flints of Memory Lane

8) Closing Time

9) Going Wodwo (poem)

Fragile (and Uneven) Things
By Bart King
This excellent story collection is a bit like a pop CD that is frontloaded with its best material. Thus, if this book had ended on page 112, I would have been quite happy. This book's interstitial poems aside (which Gaiman essentially apologizes for in the author's notes), the stories up to that point range from good to brilliant. It's a fantastic run of storytelling, and I was sad to see it end.

But end it does. From there in, the tales range from:
-- the unbelievable ("Keepsakes and Treasures") and yes, I use the word advisedly...
-- to the uninspired ("Good Boys Deserve Favors")...
-- to the unfortunate, namely, CD liner notes for Neil's "personal friend," Tori Amos ("Strange Little Girls")...
-- and sometimes, back to the excellent ("The Monarch of the Glen," among others).

I think that part of the problem with the material stems from the fact that people apparently ring Gaiman asking him to contribute for specialty anthologies. ("Neil, I'm putting together a collection of stories about gargoyles. Are you in?") This type of "spec work" is perhaps not the best way to seek inspiration. So to continue my previous analogy, this book's substandard material should be thought of as a CD's bonus tracks.

That said, FRAGILE THINGS is a mostly enjoyable read, and to reiterate, the first third of the book alone is worth the price of admission.

Mix of the fantastic and the mundane
By Author Bill Peschel
Neil Gaiman weaves the threads of fairy tales, mythology and archetypes throughout his fiction, which, combined with a writing style that's simple and adorned with elegant turns of phrases, has made him one of the leading figures in fantastic fiction. "Fragile Things," his collection of short stories and poems, contains excellent stories about desire and loss, a few wonderful riffs on genre fiction, a bunch of middling stories and poems and a few bones for Gaiman completists and Tori Amos fans.

The gulf between the stories can be described by comparing two of them: "October in the Chair" and "Good Boys Deserve Favors." Dedicated to Ray Bradbury, "October" reinvents Bradbury's wonderful mingling of the fantastic with the bitter reality of childhood. The personifications of the months of the year gather to tell stories, and October ("his beard was all colors, a grove of trees in autumn, deep brown and fire-orange and wine-red, an untrimmed tangle across the lower half of his face") describes the short, bitter life of Runt, a boy who's bullied by his elder twin brothers and pitied by his parents. He runs away from home and, on the edge of town, by an abandoned farmhouse, befriends the ghost of a boy. It's a sad tale, with a sad ending that could also be thought of as a happy ending.

"Good Boys" is a nicely written story about another boy, at public school, who takes up the double bass because he has to learn an instrument, and he likes the notion of a small boy playing a big instrument. He neglects his lessons, preferring to read, and then one day, while not practicing, he's visited by adults who ask him to play. He simply plays, and plays beautifully. Later, he accidentally breaks the bass, but the repairs have drained it of whatever magic it held. He transfers to another school and stops playing the bass ("The thought of changing to a new instrument seemed vaguely disloyal, while the dusty black bass that sat in a cupboard in my new school's music rooms seemed to have taken a dislike to me."). Puberty hits, and that's the end of it.

"Good Boys" may be a simple story about a block-headed student who encounters a magic that leaves him unmarked. Gaiman's men in several stories share that indifference. Bizarre things happen to people they to encounter (the waspish guest in "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch") or barely know (the long-ago co-worker encountered again in the gruesome "Feeders and Eaters"), and their response is a blank stare followed by a "well, that was interesting." It's English understatement bordering on ennui.

Gaiman mentions in his introduction writing stories "told in the first person and were slices of lives," so "Good Boys" may be meant to start and end without really going anywhere.

In my nastier moments, I'd think that he had the germ of a better story and couldn't be buggered to finish it.

"Fragile Things" contains some excellent stories as well. Fans of "American Gods" will appreciate Shadow's return in the novella "The Monarch of the Glen." "A Study in Emerald" crosses Sherlock Holmes with H.P. Lovecraft and the result is rarely encountered after generations of Holmes pastiches: a clever tale that's worthy of Alan Moore. "Goliath" is a better "Matrix" story than most of the films. "Harlequin Valentine" and "How Do You Think It Feels?" are memorably twisted love stories and "Keepsakes and Treasures" a surprisingly nasty tale to those who've forgotten "Sandman" stories like "24 Hours."

The better Gaiman tales are inhabited by the human heart, with all its passion and pain. His stories are better when his people bleed.

Allen, author of Remember Pearl Harbor and George Washington, Spy Master comes a sweeping, dramatic history of the Americans who fought alongside the British on the losing side of the American Revolution. Allen’s compelling account comprises an epic story with a personal core, an American narrative certain to spellbind readers of Tom Fleming, David McCullough, and Joseph Ellis. The first book in over thirty years on this topic in Revolution War history, Tories incorporates new research and previously unavailable material drawn from foreign archives, telling the riveting story of bitter internecine conflict during the tumultuous birth of a nation.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on letters, diaries, and other primary sources, historian Allen (George Washington, Spymaster) challenges the traditional notion that all the colonists wanted to overthrow the oppressive British government. Instead, he argues that a substantial portion of Americans remained loyal to Britain. Even families were divided, making the Revolution a civil war that often pitted sons against fathers and brothers against brothers. Yet Patriots and Loyalists changed constantly with the varying fortunes of the war. [ For example, Stephen Jarvis, a young farmer, initially joined the Patriots' Connecticut militia in order to defy his Tory father; when his regiment was temporarily released from active duty, young Jarvis fought with the Tory army on Long Island. After the war, 80,000 Tories left the new United States, many starting new lives in Canada; in 1792, about 2,000 ex-slaves given their freedom for joining the Loyalists, sailed to Africa, founding what is now Sierra Leone. Allen's thorough research and fast-paced narrative provide fresh ways of thinking about the Revolutionary War and shed new light on the lives of those, from bankers to small tradesmen, who remained loyal to the throne in the face of vigorous opposition and persecution. From the Back Cover

The American Revolution was not simply a battle between the independence-minded colonists and the oppressive British. As Thomas B. Allen reminds us, it was also a savage and often deeply personal civil war, in which conflicting visions of America pitted neighbor against neighbor and Patriot against Tory on the battlefield, on the village green, and even in church.

In this outstanding and vital history, Allen tells the complete story of the Tories, tracing their lives and experiences throughout the revolutionary period. Based on documents in archives from Nova Scotia to London, Tories adds a fresh perspective to our knowledge of the Revolution and sheds an important new light on the little-known figures whose lives were forever changed when they remained faithful to their mother country.

Letting the Facts Speak for Themselves
By Stephen Davidson
Think you know a lot about the American Civil War? No, not the one in 1861, I mean the one that ended in 1783. Confused? Then you need to read Thomas B. Allen's newest book, "Tories: Fighting for the King in America's First Civil War". Given that history is written by the conquerors, there are very few opportunities to let both sides of any war have a fair hearing, especially one that ended over 200 years ago. Word choice alone can skew any hope of objectivity. Was the "American Revolution" in fact the "First American Civil War"? Did "loyalists" try to quash "rebels" or were "patriots" battling against "traitors"?

"Tories" sheds some much needed light on these questions. Richly researched from many country's archives and neglected primary sources, "Tories" tells the story of(rebel)brother fighting against(tory)brother in a war which both sides thought they would win. Descendants of Mayflower passengers as well as newly arrived immigrants found themselves on opposite sides of a conflict which eventually also included soldiers from France, Britain, and the German states.

While not writing a pro-loyalist history, Allen demonstrates that in each of the Thirteen Colonies, American colonists did not unanimously support independence from Great Britain. In "Tories", stereotypes from earlier biased historical accounts get a much needed correction. For instance, Georgia almost remained a loyalist colony; New York City and Philadelphia were strongholds of those who "adhered to the enemy". Enslaved Africans who were given freedom from their patriot masters are a fascinating "subset" of loyalists. Men who once served on the estates of Jefferson and Washington would help to found the future west African nation of Sierra Leone.

Descendants of patriots and loyalists often point out the atrocities committed by the "other side" during the Revolution. These are not ignored. What has often been forgotten, however, is that there was enough persecution on the part of the patriots to compel 80,000 fellow Americans to seek refugee in other lands. The sheer number of loyalist refugees --not to mention Tory regiments-- will give the reader pause to consider the sizeable proportion of American colonists who stayed true to their sovereign.

The revolutionary/civil war was not always simply a matter of liberty versus loyalty. While there were good men (and women) on both sides, patriot and loyalist motivation to take up arms was not always based on the highest moral principles. Readers will be surprised at how fickle some "rebels" and "tories" were. Depending on who seemed to be winning the war, these "weather vanes" would turn with the prevailing winds.

"Tories" demonstrates that nothing, not even the founding event of a nation, is as straightforward as one might believe. If you are ready to consider the Revolution as a civil war rather than an uprising against Great Britain, and if you ready to see it "with warts and all", then "Tories" will be a most illuminating read.

The Revolution, American versus American, The First Civil War
By Daniel Hurley
Excellent look at the war of the Americans, a true Civil War of Americans with the British on the Tory side. Allen provides a fascinating history of the battles between the patriots, often termed rebels by the British and the Tories who preferred to be called Loyalists. The battle between neighbors, former friends was often violent towards each other to extreme measures literally involving burning of towns, pillaging and in some cases on the spot hangings. Significant populations of tories existed in Boston and in particularly New York and New Jersey and in the Carolinas.. The areas in NY and NJ between the large area between the British and Washington's army was called neutral ground where forces from either side, particularly tory units and patriots; literally fighting as semi-guerilla fighting, raids and an added opportunist group of virtual outlaws that would rob and kill either for any gain. The plague of either side were spies and individuals who would change sides based on circumstance or economics. Famous notorious tories included Joseph Galloway, a member of the first Continental Congress and William Franklin, Ben Franklin's son. Atrocities were committed on both sides particularly in revenge for a horrendous act by the opponent. Most puzzling was the violent treatment rendered to patriots led by New York (former governor of NC) governor Tyron who wages violent retribution against complete patriot towns that included burning homes, pillaging, rape and unnecessary violence towards helpless victims. This was supported and replicated by Franklin, Galloway and in the south by British officer Banastre Tarleton who led forces in a reported massacre in the Carolinas. This combined with Indian forces accompanying Johnny Burgoyne who killed not only numerous colonists but several women that became notable rallying cries for local patriots. These extraordinary measures, perhaps motivated by personal loss that turned to hated, seems to have ruined the British chances of winning the war in the middle to late stages when the Continental armies seemed to be on their last legs. Even late in the war, it wasn't clear who to trust such as the actions of Continental General Charles Lee at the Battle of Monmouth or the actions of one of the patriots greatest generals, Benedict Arnold. Allen covers this history from the beginnings of independence to the final declaration of peace resulting in the evacuation of NYC. A testament to the harshness between each side is exemplified by General Putnam's letter to Tyron:

Sir- Nathan Palmer, a lieutenant in your king's service, was taken in my camp as a spy. He was tried as a spy; condemned as a spy, and you may rest assured sir, he shall be hanged as a spy. I have the honor to be, &c, Israel Putnam P.S. Afternoon. He is hanged.

One of the best and most interesting books on the American Revolution.

A Compelling and provocative narrative of the Revolutionary War
By jack stock
"Tories" certainly proves in no uncertain way that the Revolutionary War was as much a civil conflict as a battle for independence. For me, the most important single impact of the book was the way it showed that all of the participants were true Americans, that both sides engaged in a multitude of cruel, even outrageous acts, and there weren't that many of either group wearing the white hats. Both leaders and followers of all factions are portrayed as people much like ourselves, human beings torn by conflicting loyalties and driven by ideology as well as by perceived class or individual benefit or loss. This book thus desanctified the war itself, thereby challenging the super-patriotic narrative instilled in most of us in school and even in college.

The Best Of The Bunch
By Karen Joan
GOLDILICIOUS, the third installment in the Pinkalicious series, is by far the best of the bunch. However, I seem to be out of sync with the rest of the population on this. The first two books, Pinkalicious and Purplicious, are enjoyable and my 5 year old daughter loves them; she reads them over and over and over. However, mom has some reservations about both books, in that the kids are snarky to their parents and mean to their friends. Now, my wee one does understand the messages from these two books: that kids shouldn't behave this way, but I have to wonder how necessary the attitude is to either story.

With GOLDILICIOUS, I feel vindicated. There is no attitude, meanness, or rudeness. GOLDILICIOUS is a sweet and enchanting story about Pinkalicious and her imaginary unicorn, named (obviously) Goldilicious. This story is about imagination, creativity, and pure little girl fun.

Author Victoria Kann got it right with GOLDILICIOUS. The story is original and cute, and the illustrations are gorgeous. GOLDILICIOUS is my 5 year old's favorite of the three, and it certainly in mine, too. GOLDILICIOUS is one I don't mind reading to her over and over.

Not bad, but not on par with the original...
By Y. R. Wu
Pinkalicious is funny, original, and very entertaining, even for adults. (It's one I don't mind reading over and over)

Not your usual kid fare - Pinkalicious is likely to become a classic.

Unfortunately, like most sequels, Purplicious and Goldilicious are not nearly as good as the original

Pinkalicious: 5 stars. Manic and Hysterical. "Speed dialed the pediatrician," "Pinkerbelle" and other great lines make this a joy even for adults to read, which is good since you'll be reading it over...and over...and over...

Purplicious: 3 stars, Still interesting and worthy of 4 stars except that the negativity, cliquishness, teasing is better suited for older kids. Maybe.

Goldilicious: 3 stars - An imaginary unicorn called Goldalicious makes for a very promising start, but then the story bogs down in repetition with not a lot of sophistication. More suited to younger kids as Pinkalicious but not as sophisticated or interesting for adults.

Other recent children's books I rate five stars are "Dexter Beasley and the Big Blue Beastie," "Click, Clack, Moo" and "Princess and the Pizza"

I wish the authors would stick to the Pinkalicious formula
By Syrielle
We own all three "licious" books. Pinkalicious, of course, being the gold standard with the creative and captivating plot. Purplicious was pretty much a bomb, though the illustrations were still striking and beautiful. I was crossing my fingers hard for "Goldilicious", because I know the author has the talent necessary to make a riveting and clever story. Though children will be interested in the story in Goldilicious, it still falls flat and is hardly memorable. We will still read and enjoy it, but I just can't help but compare the last two books to the first one.
Next time I hope to see the formula of Pinkalicious followed more closely. Maybe something with more pink emphasis...or maybe with Pinkalicious turning a new color.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in 1910, the delightful 19th Amelia Peabody novel from bestseller Peters (after Tomb of the Golden Bird) takes Amelia and her husband, Emerson, to Palestine, where an English adventurer, George Morley, is planning to excavate Jerusalem's Temple Mount in search of the Ark of the Covenant. Gen. David Spencer, the director of Military Operations in London, suspects Morley, an amateur archeologist at best, of spying for the Germans, whose influence has been growing in the Middle East. Spencer wants Egyptologists Amelia and Emerson to stop Morley from undertaking a project sure to offend the three religious groups that consider the temple site holy. Meanwhile, son Ramses embarks on a treacherous journey to convey to his parents important information learned from two travelers he meets while on a dig in Samaria. Once again, MWA Grandmaster Peters uses vivid settings, sharp characterizations, and deft dialogue to transport the reader to another time and place. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Peters, named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1998, writes wildly popular historical mysteries about British archaeologist Amelia Peabody, who is pulled into adventures by her well-muscled (this is mentioned quite a bit) Egyptologist husband and their wayfaring son, Ramses, an Egyptian grammarian who is forever being kidnapped, pursued, or lost in tombs. Since Peters is writing today, it’s difficult to tell if her overblown style (she really does say things like “muscles rippled across the breadth of his chest”) is a nod to the period (around the turn of the last century), her own send-up of romance novels, or her baroque style. What is unfortunate is that Peters, who has a doctorate in Egyptology from the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute, doesn’t do more to give readers the benefit of her broad background, other than to have the couple constantly going to Egypt on various quests that remain at the level of Raiders of the Lost Ark simplicity. In the latest Peters, the year is 1910, Ramses has disappeared yet again on a dig, and a mysterious adventurer who might be a German spy invites the Emersons (Amelia goes with) to Jerusalem on a hunt for the Ark of the Covenant. The novel moves between Amelia’s first-person narration and Ramses’ point of view (undercutting suspense over his fate). Peters’ fans, of course, find plenty to enjoy from the characters alone. This one’s for them. --Connie Fletcher

Woot! A new Amelia Peabody Emerson tale is worthy of celebration
By Saralee Etter
I read this entire book with a huge grin on my face. Amelia is back in perfect form, and so is Emerson.

This book takes place in 1910, and in the story chronology it falls between Guardian of the Horizon and Falcon at the Portal. I think Ramses is about 18 here, and you can see him in the process of becoming the man he is in later installments.

This 19th entry into the series is wonderful fun--and is concentrated on the activities of just the central members of the clan, which makes the story feel like a return to some of the earlier tales where there wasn't such an enormous cast of characters to keep track of. While I like knowing what all the various characters are up to, it's nice to focus on the main characters this time.

The Emersons manage to dominate any landscape they enter, and their excursion into the Holy Land brings in some new and interesting elements.

Fans of the Emersons will rejoice!

Amelia is back!
By Amy Phipps
I've been a fan of Elizabeth Peters for over 20 years, so the prospect of a new Amelia book is always thrilling to me. I was admittedly a bit disappointed in the last book in the series, which, though wonderfully written, was really more of a tribute to King Tut's tomb than an Amelia story. This book, on the other hand, was back to Peters' classic formula. Another dead body? Another shirt ruined? Heavenly!

The story takes place in pre-WWI 1910, as Amelia, Emerson, and company head to Palestine to stop a politically and religiously sensitive excavation of holy ground. It was wonderful to see Amelia and Emerson charging around berating political and religious leaders alike for their failures in the region, and even better to see Ramses as a tentative, developing 23 year-old. With a good plot, credible villains, and a cast of characters small enough that I was able to enjoy them all to the fullest, I loved every minute of it... especially Sethos' appearance (which all of the Emersons missed - but I didn't!) A treasure for any long-time fan of the series and highly recommended!

Welcome back, Peabody!
By NC Reader
I agree with some reviews that this installment was shorter and lacking in detail in places, but it reminded me of what got me hooked on this series in the first place 20 years ago - Peabody and Emerson! Peabody's "little lists"; her parasol; her self-confidence; her steely, take-no-prisoners mentality (all wrapped up in the perfect decorum of a Victorian British lady, of course); and the wonderful driving force behind the series, the passionate yet loving relationship she shares with Emerson, her hunky, hilarious, brilliant and outspoken husband, "the greatest Egyptologist of this or any other age". They are a delicious pair, with their "refreshing discussions", charging in where angels fear to tread, fighting the good fight against spies, criminals, inept bureaucrats, archeologists and hypocrites everywhere.

So, while I agree that this might not be up to the excellent standards Ms. Peters set for herself in previous books, her middling best is still better than a lot of what is out there for mystery buffs - especially those of us who enjoy a large dollop of humor in the mix - so I liked it and gave it four stars accordingly. I only hope there are more Peabody and Emerson adventures to come, whether they are set after 1922 or during the "in-between years"!

David M. Potter's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Impending Crisis is the definitive history of antebellum America. Potter's sweeping epic masterfully charts the chaotic forces that climaxed with the outbreak of the Civil War: westward expansion, the divisive issue of slavery, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown's uprising, the ascension of Abraham Lincoln, and the drama of Southern secession. Now available in a new edition, The Impending Crisis remains one of the most celebrated works of American historical writing.

Review
"The finest work of a fine historian."--C. Vann Woodward"In contrast to so much of recent American historical writing, "The Impending Crisis "is history in the grand tradition. Its concerns are philosophical; it asks questions which have been eclipsed by newer interests. It seeks to examine the nature of the political process and the underlying patterns of historical causation. On these subjects, Potter's insights are profound and original."--Eric Foner, "The New York Times Book Review""It is magnificent."--Walter Clemons, "Newsweek"

A must have, a must read
By Thomas W. Robinson
If you are a Civil War buff or a student of American history, this book is a must have. It is a must read. Potter has written the definitive look at the years leading up to the Civil War, especially the 1850s. The book starts out dealing with the Wilmot Proviso in 1848 and goes right up to the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861. In between, Potter tells us of all the economic, social, and, especially, political causes of the sectional tensions.

The most brilliant thing about Potter's book seems rather simple--he tells the story as the people who lived it saw it. Too often, as Potter himself points out, historians have dealt with the 1850s as simply a precursor to the war or dealt with the issues and somewhat glossed over them because hindsight allowed them to know what was going to happen. Potter tries to leave hindsight out of it and just present the facts as they occurred in the years 1848-1861. What the reader gets is a great view of the people and events of the time as they happened and what their direct causes were.

The many other reviewers will probably do better than I can, but simply put, if you are interested in the antebellum history, the Civil War, American politics, or just looking for a good read, pick up this book. You won't be disappointed.

I learned so much from this book
By Huckster
This is a simply wonderful book. Every statement is footnoted, with references so copious it is mind-boggling. If he says Jefferson Davis had doubts secession, he will provide a footnote referencing a letter or document to back it up. Considering a topic as controversial and prone to apologia and ideological argument, it is a comfort to have the facts so well documented. I love his approach to history. Basically, he says " Here is one interpretation, and here are the facts to support it", then "Here is another, and here are the facts to support it", and if necessary, he points out his own argument, with facts to support it. The result is that even when he is making his own argument, he clearly leaves it to the reader to decide. I learned so much from this book. I have 30 pages to go, and it's one week overdue at the library, which is why I came to amazon.com: to see about buying it. I simply must own this book. Five enthusiastic stars!

The Decade That Led to Civil War
By George Wood
Abraham Lincoln's 1860 election as President of the United States was the catalyst that set off the American Civil War, but this book traces the political processes that led to that result during the just over a decade between the end of the Mexican War in 1848 and the start of the Civil War with the firing on Fort Sumner in 1861.

Today it is easy to look back and regard the entire process as inevitable. What David Potter does in this classic, first published in 1976, is present the politics behind each step that pushed the sections of the country apart over the slavery issue. One apparent mystery has been what drove the astute politician Stephen Douglas to force through legislation tearing up the Compromise of 1820, which had extended a line from Missouri westward, north of which slavery would not be permitted. It was a colossal blunder that opened what had been a more or less settled issue, fanning the flames of sectionalism needlessly.

His Kansas-Nebraska Act opened those territories, north of the line, to a concept of popular sovereignty, in which those supposedly living in the territories would be allowed to vote on the issue. This may have sounded democratic, but it led to a wave of Abolitionist settlers from New England, and pro-slavery visitors from neighboring Missouri, resulting in "Bleeding Kansas", with attacks and massacres from both sides, and very little democracy. Potter shows that Douglas started from a powerful need to organize the territories so a Pacific railroad could be built, preferably from Chicago in his home state of Illinois. That simple point of departure led him into a series of moves that only deepened the sectional divide.

Potter describes how the southern slaveholders won a whole series of meaningless victories that did nothing to extend the slave territories but did intensify feelings against slavery in the North, from the Mexican War and Kansas-Nebraska to the Dred Scott decision and the hanging of John Brown. He traces the rise of the Republican party out of the ruins of the Whigs and the Freesoil Party, and exposes the latter not as advocates of rights for black people, but driven rather by a deep-seated racism aimed at keeping blacks out of the territories. Complicating the 1850's political map of America was the American, or "Know Nothing" party, dedicated to stopping the recent flood of mainly Catholic immigrants from Europe.

He also demonstrates that the Unionist candidates did better than generally believed in the four-sided presidential election of 1860, and that the voting system itself gave the secessionists of late 1860 and early 1861 far greater strength than their actual numbers.

If you want to get deep into the politics that split the powerful Democratic Party and ultimately the nation, this book has what you are looking for.

Ada and Harriet don't know what to expect when they meet their new guardian, Mr. Wolfson. Here is a strangely magnetic, darkly amusing man confined to a wheelchair and flanked by a pair of fierce, dangerous dogs—an enigmatic benefactor, at once welcoming and intimidating. Even more unsettling to the girls are Wolfson's two sons, Julian and Francis. One of them is warm and good-natured, the other is pure malevolence. But young Harriet is about to discover a frightening truth: that evil runs rampant throughout their mysterious new home, Abbey Manor, and the surrounding moors—especially when the moon comes out . . .

The wolf within Mrs. Michaels
By A Customer
Sons of the Wolf has to be Barbara Michaels greatest novel yet. This novel is full of myster and drama.
The novel begins with two sisters Harriet and Ada who have just become orphaned by their grandmother, and are forced to live with a distant cousin. In it they discover two bothers who are total oppostes and who have secrets themselves. Yet the main question circulating throughout the novel is, who is the true wolf trying to devour the innocent sheep like sisters. If you love mystery and dramam I highly recommend you read this novel.

A Thrilling Gothic Romance!
By Anemone Flynn
Sons of the Wolf by Barbara Michaels (also known as Elizabeth Peters) is a gothic romance set in the mid 1800s.

The narrative takes the form of a semi-regular journal kept by Harriet Barton. Harriet and her cousin Ada have recently lost their grandmother, who was also their guardian. Having run out of closer living relatives, they are sent to live with Mr. Wolfson, their very distant cousin, and his son Julian. Julian is pleasant, if not particularly bright, and assiduously courts the beautiful Ada. Mr. Wolfson is confined to a wheelchair, and his two wolf-like dogs follow him wherever he goes. Just as Harriet finds herself adjusting to their new home, she encounters a disturbance in the form of Francis Wolfson, the older, previously undisclosed son. The villagers and servants try to warn her about the Wolfson family, but she dismisses their concern as superstition, and determines to hold to her own judgments.

Francis, unlike his brother, seems uninterested in either girl, and finds his joy in stirring up trouble and turning the members of the house against one another. A band of gypsies and a handsome stable boy add complications when Ada is attacked on one of her daily rides, and the two dogs are a constant threatening presence. However, in good Barbara Michaels tradition, things are never as they seem, people's motives are clouded, and Harriet soon discovers a dastardly plot to deprive both girls of their fortune and freedom.

The book is not long, but the plot doesn't come across as worn or trite. Harriet's character is very believable, and the story flows naturally from her eyewitness account. I found it a very pleasant for whiling away a few hours with a cup of tea. I rate it appropriate for 14 and older on the Aardvark scale due to frightening situations and violence.

A classic gothic
By Dr. Amanda DeWees
This is one of Michaels's finest, in my opinion, tied with _Black Rainbow_ for my favorite among her gothics. If you prefer her contemporary romantic suspense novels like _The Dancing Floor_, this is probably not for you. If, however, you love _Jane Eyre_ and books in the true gothic tradition--a sympathetic, adventurous heroine; a sinister villain; a bleak nineteenth-century setting; and increasing suspense and danger--this is a must-read. Michaels also offers her trademark enhancements of the formula in the shape of an engaging, humorous, and genuinely likeable hero (no brooding churl!) and welcome touches of humor. I find the heroine especially enjoyable, unlike Michaels's more recent heroines, who are more abrasive, defensive, and unsympathetic. This is perfect rainy-day or winter reading. If you listen, you can hear the howling of the wolves...
