A wealth of information for your home
By Kent Keith
This is a must have for any homeowner that is all thumbs when it comes to home repair and home improvement. Designed for the novice, the book tells you exactly what tools and materials plus step by step instructions for the projects that anyone can understand. There are great tips, tricks and home maintenance information any homeowner can use. This book would make a great housewarming gift, especially to the first time homeowner.

Not what it looks like.
By E. Kerby
When I peeked into this book, I opened to the page about replacing screens (which is something I'm doing!) I expected similar projects throughout the rest of the book. I bought it. I read the whole thing on a trip this past weekend.

The first section (about tools!) was pretty good! It had great (basic) information about which tools are important to have. The author suggests painting all of the house tools a certain color so they always end up where they belong. That's fantastic! As I kept reading, I don't know why the author even bothered describing tools--most of the book is not about "fixes" or "projects" at all! Of 55 "projects" and "one-hour wonders", I counted 16 projects that needed real tools, 22 projects that were useful 'fix-it' things and the rest were all 'organize this, plan that' projects. But get this--of all 55 tasks, only THREE actually called for a hammer among the necessary tools! (They were "Install a Dead-Bold Lock", "Replace a Prewoven Cane Chair Seat or Back", and "Mud Pies and Brick Joints"--which is actually a section about touching up mortar joints in bricks, and it actually calls for a "bricklayer's hammer".)

-------
Here is MY SHORT REVIEW:
This book is probably EXACTLY what you want if you are 50-60+ years old (like, old enough to be really attached to wallpaper), you are new to do-it-yourself stuff, and you have always wanted to try your hand at decorating, but you think home improvement projects may be a good place for you to start. If you have an older home that you would like to restore, you will like even more of this.

If you want to use tools like the ones on the front cover, or you want to fix things, this is probably not the book for you. The organization (and content) of this book make it best-suited for people who just kind of have some extra time they want to spend doing something nice. If you want to find projects that you hadn't thought of, this book offers some new ideas.

If you actually want to do home improvement or give a useful housewarming book, look for a well-organized book that has pictures, diagrams, and instructions! The books that I would probably recommend are "How Your House Works"(to understand how the systems work) and the Black and Decker "Home Repair" books (for projects).

Here is the LONGER REVIEW:
[I think it's okay to write a very long review for this because there isn't much information about it in the product description or the other reviews, and maybe someone actually wants to know.]

ABOUT THE BOOK:
You can kind of see from the pictures Amazon provides, but basically there is a "contents" page, a foreword and introduction, and then ten chapters.

Throughout the book, there are margins on the sides; the margins have related blips of information in sections called "Andrea's Choice" (things the author recommends); "Quick Tip" (tips related to the section); "Caution" (related safety advice); and "Andrea's Expert Says" (things experts have taught the author--these are usually pretty helpful, I thought.) The margins also sometimes have pictures of items, or pictures of the steps for projects--but the pictures are really tiny.

Chapters typically start with a cute title, a cute subtitle, a quote, a little introduction with a story, and a list of the things included in the chapter. The first section and project of each section are usually about planning and organization for the chapter topic. Each chapter has sections about maintaining things, info about different options for the chapter subject, and it has things to do; some are called PROJECT[s] and others are called ONE-HOUR WONDER[s].

Each project has a title, a level of difficulty (projects with 1 hammer are the easiest, and they range up to 5 hammers. I think most are 1-3 hammers of difficulty.), and an introduction. After the project intro, the author lists the supplies needed (in very vague terms), and then the author lists steps for completing the project. The steps go into varying amounts of detail. Sometimes there are tips to go along with different steps.

THE PROJECTS:
Since the Table of Contents is so lacking, here is a list of the included projects for the first few chapters:
-------

---

Here are some of my notes that I took as I was reading:

- POOR TABLE OF CONTENTS: It doesn't even list the projects. If you want to see the actual projects included, they are listed at the beginning of each chapter, but not in a way that they grab your attention. The index looks pretty decent, but why not just list the projects all in one place?

- PROJECT TITLES ARE CUTE/VAGUE INSTEAD OF USEFUL: "Weekend Farmhouse Kitchen." What is that, exactly? (Sanding cabinets and stuff.) "Luxurious Lawns." Is that planting them? Watering them? (It's patching them.) "Tip-top Tips." Try to even guess! It's upgrading your attic insulation.

- CHEESY INTROS for every section and sub-section. ("Does a ghost seem to inhabit your toilet?" is the start of a section on leaky toilet valves. (p. 70)) There are also little stories at the beginning of each chapter; these introductions seem totally irrelevant, and they are kind of a waste of space. Who cares that the bathroom is "an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life" (p. 57).

- FOCUS ON VINTAGE: The author is especially interested in 'vintage' homes (sometimes pre-1950, sometimes pre-1970). To me, this stuff was completely irrelevant, and it seemed like it belonged in a book specific to that niche. [If you are interested in sections on older homes, check out pages: 20-22, 31-32, 117, 119, 147, 181, and 194-195. There are probably other sections, too, but those were the ones that I noted.]

- SOME GOOD GENERAL TIPS: Many of the sections had good general suggestions that had nothing (or little) to do with do-it-yourself. Some of it was still helpful. For example, the first chapter (about tools) was pretty useful, I thought. There were also sections on foundations, pruning trees, caulking and weather stripping, glues and epoxies, and a section on the 'work triangle' in the kitchen. Although these sections were not part of official projects, they included information that would still be relevant if you wanted to do projects. I thought the author did a great job of including a combination of 'real' projects and 'maintenance' work.

- SOME RANDOM TOPICS that seem out of place. There is a section all about sorting your bathroom things and getting rid of old makeup, etc. Okay, in a book called "If I had a Hammer" which is supposed to be about projects and fixes, I just really didn't expect tips about how to pack my makeup bag (p.64). Other things that seemed out of place were: a big section on how precious water is (p.173-177), and another section on why we should all buy home water-filtration systems (p.51-52). Pages and pages about different plants and garden things.

- MORE FOR DECORATORS: Each chapter had big sections on planning, and many of the comments and suggestions were design-based. In the bathroom section it mentions adding paint, and the author suggests, "For instance, if you have 1950s green tiles, try pale yellow as a wall paint. Or if you have a black or white motif, highlight it by painting the walls sage green or pink. If you don't want to go too bold, update your color with tone-on-tone neutrals such as ecro, oyster, almond, or biscuit. Then you can add colorful touches with towels, soaps, and candles," (p.59). [Good thing I have a hammer so I can match my 50s tile with some candles. Ooookay.] Many of the "projects" and "fixes" are also decorating things--replace towel bars and accessories (so that you can match them with your bathroom faucets, because that's popular now, she says.) Put fake metal on your appliances to make them match. Re-cover a chair. These things are not really the "fixes" I was expecting. But for people interested in DIY home decorating, this book may be more fun-- there is a whole chapter on decorating, actually (Ch.4).

- OUTDATED: The author talks over and over again about trash compactors and wall paper. I'm not even kidding. I checked the copyright, because I assumed it must be from 1995. Nope. It's from 2008. I thought trash compactors were kind of something that was a pretty big deal in the 1980s and now nobody really is interested in them. People don't buy wallpaper anymore, they paint accent walls.

- KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS. On the back cover, this book talks all about making home improvement simple, and it says that with a little help from Andrea, you can "tackle repairs, painting and decorating, bathroom and kitchen remodeling, wood care for furniture and floors, and much more..." Actually, though, the author does not want people to "tackle" too much. Over and over again, Ridout suggests handing your projects off to professionals. Often she explains this in detail. Here are some things you should let professionals do: basic plumbing (after you carefully shop for materials) (p.61); any plumbing in the walls (p.68); do things you don't know how to, deliver things you buy, or do your decorating for you (p.82-83); install your doors and locks, but you should supervise them (p.120); polish your hardware (p.123); check your insulation (p.178); maybe replace the pressure release valve on your water heater (p.208); check out your roof if it is aging at all (p.226-227); design your landscaping (p.258). There was also a big disclaimer at the beginning.

- OFTEN FLOOFY. One of the suggestions is to have a second set of drip pans for the stove, so that you can swap them out when you have guests (p.41). (... why not just keep them clean? Or replace them if they're that dirty?) In a lot of places, she recommends specialty stores for things, but in a really vague way. Here's an example: "Head to your local hardware store or home center. If you are looking for something a little different--for instance, lion's head doorknobs--you may want to visit decorative hardware showrooms. These stores specialize in unusual products that are not normally available, but be aware that they may have stricter return and exchange policies than you are used to. Wherever you buy your hardware, be sure to understand the store's policies before yous special-order products..."(p.119). There was a part about many switch plates being made to order (p.131), and that just kind of made me laugh. Really?! How many people have to special-order those?

Anyway, it's not a terrible book. It's just not what I expected. There are several sections that were interesting or helpful, and I may do a couple of the projects. It seems kind of like a book for people who think they are "cooking" meals when they reheat TV dinners in the microwave.

Very useful
By tbidder
This little book has come in handy on a couple of small projects and one not-so-small. I wouldn't have tackled to bigger project if I hadn't had the confidence after great success with the smaller projects first. It's probably too basic is you're a real do-it-yourselfer, but for me, not Handy Dan, it gave me just enough informatio without overloading, and a really good idea of how complicated the project would be before I ever got started.

The Language Instinct: How the Mind Creates Language (P.S.), by Steven Pinker

In this classic, the world's expert on language and mind lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association and the Public Interest Award from the Linguistics Society of America. This edition includes an update on advances in the science of language since The Language Instinct was first published.

From Publishers Weekly
A three-year-old toddler is "a grammatical genius"--master of most constructions, obeying adult rules of language. To Pinker, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology psycholinguist, the explanation for this miracle is that language is an instinct, an evolutionary adaptation that is partly "hard-wired" into the brain and partly learned. In this exciting synthesis--an entertaining, totally accessible study that will regale language lovers and challenge professionals in many disciplines--Pinker builds a bridge between "innatists" like MIT linguist Noam Chomsky, who hold that infants are biologically programmed for language, and "social interactionists" who contend that they acquire it largely from the environment. If Pinker is right, the origins of language go much further back than 30,000 years ago (the date most commonly given in textbooks)--perhaps to Homo habilis , who lived 2.5 million years ago, or even eons earlier. Peppered with mind-stretching language exercises, the narrative first unravels how babies learn to talk and how people make sense of speech. Professor and co-director of MIT's Center for Cognitive Science, Pinker demolishes linguistic determinism, which holds that differences among languages cause marked differences in the thoughts of their speakers. He then follows neurolinguists in their quest for language centers in the brain and for genes that might help build brain circuits controlling grammar and speech. Pinker also argues that claims for chimpanzees' acquisition of language (via symbols or American Sign Language) are vastly exaggerated and rest on skimpy data. Finally, he takes delightful swipes at "language mavens" like William Safire and Richard Lederer, accusing them of rigidity and of grossly underestimating the average person's language skills. Pinker's book is a beautiful hymn to the infinite creative potential of language. Newbridge Book Clubs main selection; BOMC and QPB alternates.

From Library Journal
Following fast on the heels of Joel Davis's Mother Tongue ( LJ 12/93) is another provocative and skillfully written book by an MIT professor who specializes in the language development of children. While Pinker covers some of the same ground as did Davis, he argues that an "innate grammatical machinery of the brain" exists, which allows children to "reinvent" language on their own. Basing his ideas on Noam Chomsky's Universal Grammar theory, Pinker describes language as a "discrete combinatorial system" that might easily have evolved via natural selection. Pinker steps on a few toes (language mavens beware!), but his work, while controversial, is well argued, challenging, often humorous, and always fascinating. Most public and academic libraries will want to add this title to their collections.
- Laurie Bartolini, Lincoln Lib., Springfield, Ill.

From Booklist
Pinker, a respected cognitive scientist at MIT, has given the nonstudent a bridge into the interesting yet still controversial world of linguistics and cognitive science. Here, under a rather heavy Chomsky influence, Pinker discusses, among other things, how language evolved, how children acquire and develop language skills, and why the English language and its spelling aren't as nonlogical as such critics as George Bernard Shaw have claimed. Written for popular consumption, Pinker's discussions of such complicated arguments and theories as the various, disputable universal grammars and languages of thought, Quine's gavagai, and the world of morphemes and phonemes are all painless to read. Examples are clear and easy to understand; Pinker's humor and insight make this the perfect introduction to the world of cognitive science and language. Highly recommended for all academic libraries and for public libraries with solid psychology and philosophy collections. Caroline Andrew

book's good, but STAY AWAY FROM KINDLE EDITION!
By Eduardo Vila
This is not a review of the book itself, just a warning for anyone thinking of getting the Kindle edition.

The people who published this for Kindle should be ashamed of themselves for selling this product with a straight face.

As Kindle books are often scanned from printed versions, I'v grown accustomed to seeing the occasional mis-scanned word, as they are usually sparse and don't distract from the content.

This book, however, contains hundreds of mis-scans. I'm talking about a few every page (some pages might contain up to 10 errors). And these are errors that routinely distract from the content of the book, as the errors will sometime spell a different word altogether, giving a sentence a completely different meaning that you will only realize is nonsensical after reading an entire paragraph.

Plus, 2 times out of ten, the combination of letters "th" will be scanned as "di". As you must realize, die difficulty of reading dirough paragraphs full of diese errors, in die kindle version of diis book, dioroughly distracts from the enjoyment of die material.

The one book on linguistics for the layperson
By A Customer
For the educated layperson, this book is the most fascinating and engaging introduction to linguistics I have come across. I know some college students who had received xeroxed handouts of one chapter from this book, and these were students who were just bored of reading handouts week after week... but after reading just a few paragraphs from The Language Instinct, they were hooked, fascinated, and really wanted to read the whole book (and did). I wish I had come across such a book years ago...
If you've wished you'd taken linguistics, and never did, get this book. This one book will do it for you! Pinker is intelligent, but more importantly is a master of illustrative examples for the layperson. However, the text is never "dumbed-down" and can be a challenge to any reader.
I've read some of the other readers' reviews... unfortunately some focus more on applying academic thought-criticisims of his nativist viewpoint. Certainly, if you are coming from an academic bent, yes, I would agree that it would be a gross misrepresentation to say that Pinker presents the definitive state of the art in linguistics, or that all linguists think like he does... in fact, the critical reviewers are right, Pinker is but one linguist in one theoretical camp, the "nativist" camp, i.e. the theory that genes drive language and its acquisition in a task-specific manner. But so what? Pinker's theory is not what drives enjoyment of the book; it's the enthusiasm and skill with which he can introduce any reader to the topic of the study of language! : It's not dry! It's fun!
His viewpoint is already apparent by the title; the true value of this gem of a book is for introducing to the layperson LINGUISTICS and the depth of the kinds of questions that can be asked about language... these questions can be "beautiful," and certainly most readers would not have thought of these issues themselves, yet after Pinker's examples, it all makes wonderful sense, and is memorable and lucid. Whether or not the reader agrees with Pinker after becoming sophisticated upon further readings is not relevant; without The Language Instinct, Pinker's engaging introduction to the field, many would never wish to become linguistically sophisticated in the first place!
The sort of reader who should pay attention to the specific thought-criticisms of some of the other reviewers should really be elsewhere, reading and critiquing Pinker's academic works, e.g. journal articles, or his book "Language Learnability and Language Development," not nitpicking a book meant for introducing the masses to the beauty of language! If you aren't a linguist, I would hazard that the majority of potential readers are safe to completely ignore these thought-criticisms when pondering their potential enjoyment of purchasing this book from Amazon.
These critical reviewers should be reading/writing journal articles in the academic literature! However if you are in the grey area of reading this book for an academic reason not strictly defined as Linguistics, these specific thought-criticisms are valid to take note of and to consider-- I would concede that some niches of academics (e.g. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh of chimpanzee artificial language) may be taking The Language Instinct text, a book for the layperson, as an academic gospel of the entire field of Linguistics, without really considering the underlying technical issues or counterarguments.
Overall, you likely won't find another book which presents the beauty & complexity of language with the ease of The Language Instinct. If you are to have but one book in your library on language, this should be the one.

From Publishers Weekly
Garcia (The New Mainstream) explores disturbing trends of men leading increasingly socially isolated lives and dropping out of high school and college in record numbers, naming them victims of an invisible epidemic. According to the author, modern men have failed to forge a new and productive role in the 21st century. Garcia charts the rise of feminism and the changing societal roles of both men and women, illustrating how and why men have become so confused about what defines masculinity; having lost their traditional role as provider and protector, men flirt with hollow substitute identities—drawing on Jackass culture (men pretending to be boys), gangster culture (boys pretending to be men) and metrosexual obsessions with grooming and body image—that have reductively redefined manhood and led men away from compassion, responsibility and family. Garcia wisely avoids degrading feminism or pitting men against women; instead, he offers an astute and well-researched meditation on how men might reclaim their identity and place in modern America and why such a transformation is important to future generations of both men and women. Garcia: Men are the new women
By Brendan Ross
This is a rather disingenuous book. While Garcia does a fairly good job of outlining how men are underperforming relative to women in various ways in contemporary American society -- something which seems to be positive to men, in terms of bringing light to the issue -- his proposed solution to this perceived "decline" is breathtakingly anti-male: men need to redefine what they feel is appropriately "masculine" by becoming more feminine. Essentially, this book is a call for the feminization of men by replacing the substantive content of the word "masculine" with items that are now under the rubric "feminine". Far from being a pro-men book, this is really an exercise in 3.5 wave feminism: now that second and third wave feminism have redefined what is acceptably "feminine", it's time to redefine, for men, what is acceptably "masculine", even if men are not clamoring for this, as women clamored to redefine their own identities. This is essentially a feminist book, clothed in the language of men -- which makes it rather subversive and disingenuous.

For Garcia, the continued decline of men relative to women is irreversible and inevitable. Our only option, as men, is to accept this, and to basically get over it, and get on with our future as the second sex, with much of our masculinity replaced by so-called feminine behaviors, ideas and values -- because it is inevitable that women will be the dominant gender very soon in the United States. For Garcia, men need a "12 Step Program", basically so that we can get over our disease of being unfeminized men, and accept our inevitable feminized male destiny. This pathologizing of masculinity is astonishingly anti-male, but I'm sure that feminist writers would agree with Garcia that men are all basically like alcoholics in being addicted to their masculinity and powerless to overcome their reluctance to embrace feminine traits, values and behaviors.

Of course, all of this is misguided nonsense. Garcia takes a few shots at the more radical feminist writers, but takes great pains to repeat the mantra that men should not blame women for their relative decline. It's fair enough that not all women are to blame, as they are as diverse a group as any. But the feminist revolution, with its disproportionate impact on education in particular, has systematically disadvantaged boys, while the family law system has created a widespread incidence of boys being raised solely by women. Neither of these developments is immutable, and both must be addressed seriously if there is to be any kind of real gender equity as we move forward. Garcia notes these issues, of course, but his solution for men to change their self identity would not solve them -- boys *are* different from girls, they learn differently from girls, and they *are* being systematically messed up by the educational system -- talking to a 7 year old boy about getting in touch with his inner female and embracing a more gender-holistic self definition will not help him in the least, nor will it help the millions of American fathers who are screwed by the family court system, which has been itself heavily influenced by radical feminism. So, sure, we shouldn't blame women collectively -- but *some* women *are* to blame for what has happened, by their short-sightedness about the broader implications of changes they advocated on behalf of women, and, in some cases, by their hatred for men and their disregard for boys and so forth. That's where the blame lies.

As for the way forward, it certainly isn't for men to redefine masculinity to be more feminine. The way forward is, first, to change the institutional favoring of girls and women -- because it isn't needed, and if it isn't changed, it will very soon become a favoring of the gender that is out performing -- which makes no sense. The next step is for men and women to truly appreciate their differences more effectively. Here, again, feminism -- with its rhetoric of female superiority to men -- has to take the blame for creating attitudes of disdain and distrust between men and women. The path forward isn't a retreat to the 1950s and its rigid gender roles. But it also isn't to be found in a move towards more feminized men and masculinized women -- men and women need to rediscover a way to appreciate the fascinating, tantalizing and alluring differences between each other, and how these provide the creative tension that moves our species forward. We don't need to mush ourselves together into some kind of individualized, androgynous identity. At the end of the day, this really isn't what either men *or* women (at least women who are not radical feminists) want, or need.

So while this is an interesting read for its broad coverage of the current problems facing American men, in my opinion, it is fundamentally and fatally flawed in its prescriptions for the future. If you're interested in these kinds of issues, Kathleen Parker's new book, "Save the Males" is an entertaining read, with less specific prescriptions, but a better understanding, in my opinion, of what is needed, and what is not.

Term-paperish chronicle of male decline but doesn't say why -- I say why
By Thomas W. Sulcer
The provocative title caught my attention, but while reading I kept hunting for explanations about why men are declining. Why do women out-compete men in the workplace? His book is a fairly well documented term paper chronicling this problem from different angles (popular media, voting patterns, college attendance, etc) but he doesn't explain WHY men are declining and I will try shortly.

He notes the growing consumer power of women who realize "we just don't need men anymore". Women are learning to be financially independent. There are signs everywhere of the rise of women and the fall of men. In the last presidential election, as we're all aware, a woman candidate narrowly missed a shot at the top job. Powerful female executives seem to be more prevalent.

In my view, the pattern of male decline is one part of a much broader set of issues. The decline of men is not THE problem but only one problem wrapped up with many others, some of which are larger and thornier (e.g. decline of democracy, breakdown of citizenship, fallout from technological change). Marriage, itself, is on the decline, as individualism and personal choice undermine the shared sacrifice necessary to make marriages work. Birth control and abortion rights have undermined the classic marriage bargain of exchanging sex for a commitment. This was a kind of glue that encouraged both men (wanting sex) and women (wanting status and children) to marry. But today sex is possible without commitment, and women can achieve status without men. And competitive pressures have made it mandatory for all adults today to work, and this has brought women of all ages into a highly competitive workplace. There is terrific freedom for individuals but at the expense of families which are struggling.

So the prospect of marrying, seen through the eyes of a single woman considering tying the knot, is much less attractive today than in the 1920s or 1950s. Marrying doesn't mean an increase in status as before, but it often means downgrading her lifestyle as well as ending a chance for a variety of future sexual partners, and settling for a less robust lifestyle particularly if babies come along. Child rearing expense = $250K before college, according to a Wall Street Journal report a while back. So, why marry? Many single women opt out.

Generally I agree with the author when chronicling statistics pointing to a trend of downward mobility for men. The evidence is considerable. And I agree with another reviewer who criticized Mr. Garcia for insisting men become more like women, but I lack alternative strategies here.

But why do men have trouble competing with women in a typical Fortune 500 company? I have a working theory drawn partly from personal experience as well as extensive reading. I think men have a natural drive which equates competing and work with physical force and aggressiveness. For men, competing is scaled-down fist-fighting -- it's physical, intense, rough and tumble. In an all-male company, there would be no problem -- men would jostle for the top posts, kid each other, joust and achieve hierarchies of respect based on skill and smarts and physical presence. And there are long traditions of aggressive rivalry from our genetic past, from hunting, fighting in a war, building commercial enterprises.

But when women become colleagues and competitors too, there is a powerful shut-down mechanism at work -- because men have been conditioned over centuries NOT to hurt women, NOT to physically attack them. So this new situation is confusing. Should we all-out compete or play gentle? With women in the mix, the game is NO LONGER physical and fierce and fun but dwindles into a boring tea party. And the natural male impulse to punch, kick, out-compete runs smack dab into this powerful countervailing impulse to protect women, and the result is male shut-down.

I loved after school touch football with my buddies until a girl showed up one day wanting to play. Instantly the game was downgraded into something less fun. Playing rough and possibly hurting this girl was out of the question -- there are strong drives within all men to protect women, to be gentle, and men who hurt women have in the past been shunned, punished, killed. So we tried to play for a little while with this girl but our hearts weren't in this game. Luckily she left; but in the corporate world, women don't leave. And I think to varying extents this same problem is repeated in board rooms, in businesses, in newsrooms, on college campuses -- women seem to be everywhere, and men want to drop out.

I sometimes imagine a world where marriage worked for most people, although my cynical side suggests there has never been such a place. But wasn't there a time when each sex had it's own turf -- men in the work world, women in the home world? Each sex dominated its world, understood its rules. They separated during the day (and separating added an element of mystery) and rejoined at night. Clearly, this has broken down, and in many ways, there is much more freedom than in the past -- freedom to get out of a bad marriage, to find personal happiness, but the breakdown in the structure sometimes makes it harder to find love and form families.

There's a huge loss of respect when both sexes compete as equals in a company. Women see men are vulnerable, imperfect, flawed creatures not much different from them. They have to look at men this way to have a competitive edge. Any mystery has vanished. As a result, mens' status has dropped from breadwinner to co-competitor. It's a big plunge into nothingness, and I think men as a sex have collectively lost prestige. Women don't send signals-of-respect to men as much as before since much of this respect has evaporated -- and when men don't get these signals, there's no sense flirting, risking rejection. We retreat to our caves where our manhood and self-image are affirmed in video games or drugs or World War II reruns. Working for a female boss can be the ultimate downer, for she's somebody you can't punch if you're angry, but who can criticize you, judge you, fire you -- in such a situation, many men decide it's time to leave the firm. And women are much more adept at reading people emotionally -- their steady conversation is a competitive edge helping them to get inside peoples' minds -- but men are not genetically predisposed to respond appropriately to this amount of conversation. Men need a new mindset -- some way to keep competing while disregarding the negative signals. Many seek out professions where men still have an edge (lawyers, handymen, firefighters). It's tough today.

American men seeking marriage but having trouble connecting with independent-minded American women should consider dating foreign women, particularly from cultures which value marriage and families. Fly to the Philippines, for example, and stay there a month or two. Philippine women are beautiful, smart, like American men, value families, send the right signals, and will make you forget quickly any uppity high-maintenance arrogant American women you've had bad luck to bump elbows with.

Overall, a semi-competent book with an intriguing title that chronicles an important problem but which doesn't dig deep enough into the psychology of male-female relations underlying this problem. And it's wrapped up with bigger problems that need further exploration.

Just another insulting Man bashing book written for females!
By BRS
It is disheartening that a man wrote this to appeal to a female audience who always want to read about why they can't find a man who meets their impossibly high expectations, or who is subservient to their modern independent lifestyle.

As a man in America today I am constantly being told that natural male behaviour is unacceptable. I see females all over the TV beating up men; I am only allowed to pursue females only on their politically correct terms. If I were stupid enough to get married she has too much power to file for divorce and ruin me financially. At school and at work I see more effort invested in making sure females advance and succeed without equal attention given to males.

Our society and women have basically said to us that men are disposable, that we don't matter as much as we used to. Now why the hell should I work hard for women who don't appreciate you? And also, I see a lot of negative and destructive behaviour coming from females (Britney Spears, Paris Hilton etc) Why aren't their just as many books written about female shortcomings?

We are tired of the male bashing. The author should be a little more balanced in assigning blame, and insist women change some of their behaviours!

About the Author

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA's prestigious RITA®. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

Another emotionally satisfying story from Lorraine Heath
By AndreaW
When I pick up a Lorraine Heath book, I know I'm in for a well written, emotionally satisfying story. In Bed With the Devil is exactly this . . . in spades! This is book one in Ms. Heath's new Scoundrels of St. James series.

He is called the Devil Earl. Lucian Langdon, Earl of Claybourne, grew up differently than other members of the aristocracy-he was raised on the rough London streets. At the age of six, he was taken in by and became one of `Feagan's lads', a group of misfits trying to survive the best way they could. At fourteen, Luke was captured and accused of murder, but was spared the hangman's noose by a gentleman who claimed that Luke was his long lost grandson and heir. Luke didn't believe that he's the rightful heir, but didn't deny it and went along with the old gent. He isn't comfortable with nor accepted into society and for those reasons he doesn't attend social functions. That is until the night he attended a ball and saw Lady Catherine Mabry. While there, he couldn't take his eyes off of her and was impressed that she boldly returned his gaze. Catherine was shocked, but intrigued . . . and is still intrigued five years later. It is Luke's dangerous reputation combined with her need for help that prompts her to seek him out. She would do anything to protect those she loves-even make a deal with the devil.

I absolutely loved Luke. He is a tortured hero that I completely sympathized with. He has flaws, but it is those flaws and how he handles/reacts to them that makes him incredibly endearing. He struggles with inner demons because he believes he's not the real earl, but says he is because he didn't want to let down the man who saved his life-a man who truly believed Luke was the rightful earl and who took care of the rest of Feagan's lads. Luke is fiercely loyal to his friends and vice versa. They depended upon each other for everything when they were children and are still there for each other as adults.

Catherine is a strong, willful heroine whom I admired very much. She is the sole caretaker of her ailing father, the Duke of Greystone, while her brother is off gallivanting around the continent. She is completely devoted to her friend, Winnie, Duchess of Avendale, who is abused by her husband. Her desire to help her friend and stop the abuse is what prompts her to visit Luke and beg for his help. She is fascinated by the wickedness associated with the Devil Earl, but after spending time with him soon discovers that he's not what others perceive him to be. I like that Catherine challenges Luke at every turn and speaks her mind without being over the top.

In Bed With the Devil is a beautiful redemption story. It is darker and grittier than any of Ms. Heath's previous books, but it needs to be to fit the feel of the story. I must say that I was captivated by the secondary characters-Winnie and the rest of Feagan's lads-and wonder which of them will be featured in the next book in this series. This book is another keeper from Lorraine Heath that I highly recommend!

From Publishers Weekly
Whether readers believe what Bertoldi has to say is a matter of choice, but the charm of this "average Jersey girl who talks to the dead" goes a long way toward making this one of the more approachable titles in the recent wave of medium-authored books. It also has a format with wide appeal, more or less cribbed from the bestselling Why Do Men Have Nipples? Instead of personal health questions, Bertoldi answers queries like "Do the dead go to ball games?" (Yes) and "How meaningful are coincidences in our lives?" (Very). The book also has a dishy element, delving into the medium's personal life (her husband's a skeptic) and a number of celebrity encounters. Though generally fun reading throughout, questions of God, heaven and other spiritual matters are met with vague language; she's similarly uninformative regarding practical matters like finding happiness or contacting the seemingly omnipresent dead.

Very interesting
By Dani Arteri
When I saw this book, I was a little leery to read it because as a Christian, I've been taught that "mystical" things are to be avoided (psychics, ghosts, etc). However, Bertoldi often mentions that she belives in God and that in her "readings," she asks for God's protection. That, plus the interesting title, caused me to read the book, and I am glad that I did!

For people who are unsure about the afterlife or the existence of God, in no way does Bertoldi preach or push her beliefs throughout the book. She even mentions that her husband is a nonbeliever. Rather, Bertoldi shares her experiences and the things that she has learned from the spiritual world.

Personally, I've never really been a believer in ghosts and aliens and things, but Bertoldi's work makes a really good case for a spiritual world that is near our own. It hasn't made me a hard-core believer in mediums and such, but it's at least opened my mind more, helped answer random questions that I've had about death, etc. It made me stop and question if I'm living a good life, and it helped pull my focus away from living an Earth-life to trying to live a life that is more fit for Heaven.

Very interesting book. I highly recommend it!

Do we become one gelatenous blob?
By gamamark
I enjoyed the question and answer format of the book. It made it a light read; however, in some answers she described the dead as individualike with the ability to see everything we do and in other answers she stated that we become part of one mass or unit. I hate to think that when I speak to my late husband I am actually speaking to one collective. Another contradiction was when the Other Side is described as only able to feel love, no emotions, judgement, anger or sadness .....They are no longer human and therefore don't need these things, but in another answer will tell you how They will hide your keys to be playful because They still have a sense of humor. Either They remain individualike and retain some humanlike qualities or They become one omniconcious blob... And why is it that a personal reading lasts about 10 minutes, because that's all the spirits can last, but they tend to be able to hang out in her hallway all night? I sound like a skeptic, but I am not. I do think Concetta has the ability, but perhaps just needs to clarify some things. I do believe there is an Other Side and I do believe there are special people who can contact this Side, but I also believe that 90% of people who say they have the ability actually do not.

Already a Believer
By Donna G.
I loved this book. I can't say that Concetta Bertoldi convinced me that life of the spirit continues beyond physical death because I was already a believer. But I loved Concetta's warmth and irreverence, and while a lot of her stories just confirmed what I already believed, there were also a LOT that made even a believer say, "Wow." One thing that stood out for me is nothing "paranormal" or "spiritual" at all - that was Concetta's advice for anyone who wants to be happier, just SMILE.

All sports fans have experienced the pain and agony of seeing their beloved team's championship dreams derailed by the bumbling incompetence of a dimwitted referee. The Worst Call Ever pays homage to these desecrations and hopefully helps with the healing. Each piece details the play in question, examines the players and stakes involved, the scope of the injustice, and the path of change that was often its result. Sportswriters Garrett and O'Neal cover all sports from the Major Leagues and college football to even curling mishaps.

Great, well-written stories
By J. Hoepken
I bought this book as an afterthought because I umpire high school baseball. As a sports fan, I have enjoyed each chapter on the different sports. The author sets up the blown call(s) very well to illustrate why the calls were magnified (e.g., playoffs, national championship implications, etc.), and with a good dose of humor. The selection of blown calls is subjective, and some may disagree with inclusions and/or exclusions. Regardless, this is an excellent book for any sports fan.

The Best Sports Book Ever!
By Luree Miller
I originally was buying this book to give to sports-minded family and friends...and then started reading it myself. When an author can write with such wit, knowledge, and intelligence AND keep a non-sports-minded person like myself fascinated to the final page, that is saying A LOT! This is written in a style that makes me think I am sitting in the author's living room simply chatting about some very interesting, and oftentimes controversial, referee and umpire calls.

Getting "The Worst Call Ever!" is a great call!
By The Angry Charlottean
From Don Denkinger's infamous blown call in the 1985 World Series to Bernie Fryer's boneheaded rationale for calling a shot no good (before it was taken!) in the 2002 NBA Playoffs, "The Worst Call Ever!" takes us inside some of the most infamous plays in sports history. This book breaks each incident down into short chunks that are easy to read and highly enjoyable. It also separates the incidents by sports, so everything is grouped together very conveniently. Getting this book about bad calls is a great call for sports fans!
