Historical paranormal romance
By Helen Hancox
Although the spine of this book labels it a 'Historical Romance' it actually has a considerable dollop of paranormal woven through the pages. Merrick Mac Lochlainn has to travel through time to protect his people from a great evil. His journey is from the Isle of Coruain in the year 981 to 19th century England where he seeks a special stone, one of two that exist somewhere in England, with just the prediction that he needs to find 'Keating' on the Carlisle Road. As Merrick arrives on the Carlisle Road he sees a woman being attacked by four men and wades in to help, knowing that he can't use his usual magic in this situation as it will alert his enemies as to his location.

Jenny Keating, the young woman the mysterious man helps, has her own secrets. She's recently left a school where her treatment had been decidedly Jane Eyre-esque with beatings from the Reverend Usher, the Headmaster. Her one item of value, a special pendant left to her by her parents, has been stolen and she's on the train of her erstwhile roommate Harriet whose brother apparently lives in Carlisle. Jenny decides to travel to Carlisle to find the pendant before taking up her new position as governess just north of Carlisle. Her strange abilities to affect objects when she feels emotions strongly have made her keep herself to herself - along with the fact that everyone she has ever trusted has left her.

When the man who helped Jenny against the assailants wakes up from a crack on the head he has amnesia. Jenny names him Matthew and says he is her husband so that a band of Gypsies will help them. But Merrick remembers nothing of his mission and believes that he is Jenny's husband. As the band travels slowly towards Carlisle Jenny finds herself getting more and more attached to Matthew but she fears that a man such as he must have a wife whom he will remember.

The story moves on as they hunt for the pendant, Merrick's memory returns and Jenny and he realise that they have no future. But is there more to Jenny than meets the eye and are the prophecies about Merrick's future wife misleading?

This was an enjoyable book with some interesting settings with the band of Gypsies and moving around Carlisle in the search for the pendant. Jenny and Merrick were both believable and likeable characters although Reverend Usher seemed rather a pantomime villain. The paranormal aspect of this story felt sometimes a little of a distraction and the short scenes back in Coruain were, for this reader at least, rather spurious. However it was a good read overall.

fascinating romantic fantasy
By A Customer
In 981 on the Isle of Coruain, High Chieftain Merrick MacLochlainn knows he has no choice but to do the mission in order to keep the Druzai safe from the malevolence of their long time enemy the witch Eilinora, who escaped incarceration, killed Merrick's father, and stole the scepter of power. The first leg of his quest is to retrieve sacred stones that will bring back powers to the Druzai. However to obtain the stones means he must travel forward in time to 1826.

Merrick goes forward over eight centuries, but upon finding himself in Regency Northumbria; he is mentally confused and cannot recall his past let alone his mission. He also has problems with just who is Jenny Keating, whom he rescued from some attackers. They travel together until the reach a Gypsy camp where she claims she is his wife. Merrick knows that is untrue but does not expose her as he wants her safe while his mind heals. As he recovers and falls in love, Merrick believes Jenny is the source for his obtaining the stones. However, both know he must go back in time, but can she accompany her beloved if they retrieve the stones while his known foe and other death sorcerers cause mayhem.

TEMPTATION OF THE WARRIOR is a fascinating romantic fantasy that employs time travel to bring together a Dark Ages Scottish warrior and a Victorian woman. The time travel is especially handled really well as he struggles with effect of the trip. The story line is fast-paced from the opening segue when Merrick tells his courageous female cousin Ana no that he not she will journey and never slows down until the confrontation. Fans will appreciate Margo Maguire's magnificent good vs. evil thriller and want to read Merrick's brother Brogan's tale (see A WARRIOR'S TAKING).

Amnesia, Time Travel, gypsies and romance
By Melissa
As head of his clan, Merrick MacLochlainn feels the tremendous burden of protecting his people from the evil sorceress Elianor. To prevent her from taking over their clan, he and his brother must travel forward some 1000 years into time to the 1820's and collect sacred stones. Merrick finds himself in North England and when he spies a young woman being visciously attacked he comes to her aid.

Jenny Keating has finally secured a position as a governess and is more than ready to escape the horrible conditions of her employment. She had been teaching at a boarding school with a cruel headmaster. When she takes her leave she discovers that her roommate has stolen her locket, the only memento she has from her deceased parents. She is on a quest to retrieve the locket from the runaway girl. Unfortunately, she is waylaid by ruffians.

When Merrick comes to Jenny's aid he is shot and suffers amnesia. Jenny realizes that their situation is dire and when a traveling band of gypsies rescues them she claims he is her husband.

Merrick is attracted to Jenny and fully believes her story. Jenny is confused about her feelings for Merrick. She fears he may have a family back in Scotland. They have a passionate romance but Jenny is in a constant worry over Merrick's past.

Jenny longs for a permanent relationship but she frets about her strange mystical powers and Merrick's reaction when he discovers them. She has never shared her abilities with anyone. Merrick is running out time and when he begins to discover his past, he realizes that his clan desperately needs him but so does Jenny.

Merrick is a wonderful hero, kind of alpha male but never obnoxiously macho. His love for Jenny is powerful but it pulls against his duty to his clan. The ending was a bit rushed for me and there were a lot of characters to remember, good and bad especially in the last chapters. All in all, however, this is an enjoyable read.

I actually thought DANCE WITH A VAMPIRE, book four of the VAMPIRE KISSES series, was going to be the last one. So I was overjoyed to find out that the story of Raven and Alexander continues in THE COFFIN CLUB.

It is now summer vacation and Raven is missing Alexander. At the end of the last book, Alexander and his caretaker, Jameson, left Dullsville for Hipsterville to return the young Valentine to his family, leaving Raven all alone. Now that school is out, Raven has decided to visit her cool Aunt Libby in Hipsterville. From her aunt, she learns that the creepy mansion in town is being rented. Immediately, Raven investigates and finds her beloved and Jameson camped out in the place.

After a sweet reconciliation, Alexander rushes her out of the place to go on another mission. Raven is left wandering the town waiting for her aunt to finish up one of her classes. She ventures back to The Coffin Club (the infamous place where she first encountered the evil Jagger, Valentine's older brother) and stumbles upon the Dungeon. The Dungeon is the coolest place below the main club. It is also members only. It takes Raven a while to figure out that the "members only" part means vampires. REAL vampires. And there she meets the hypnotic Phoenix. Phoenix may just have some secrets of his own. And Raven stumbles upon Jagger yet again.

As the story develops, Raven gets caught up in the world of vampires and realizes that she does truly fit in with the vampire crowd. She meets two cool gals, Onyx and Sapphire, who befriend her. They accept her for who she is. And she finds out that most vampires just want to be who they are and lead as normal a life as possible.

There is trouble brewing at the Dungeon between Jagger and Phoenix, and the vampire world in Hipsterville may forever be changed. Caught between the mortal and immortal world, Raven again struggles with who she should be. Does she give everything up to be with Alexander for eternity, or should she remain mortal and see how things progress?

Ms. Schreiber keeps the reader coming back for more romance and adventure between Raven and Alexander. They are an unlikely romantic couple who enchants all. The story is light, with mostly action and little depth, but it is truly entertaining and fun. The story leaves the reader waiting for more once again.

Forever a better series than Twilight
By Danielle Perosi
I have been a long-time fan of the Vampire Kisses series, and there's not better words to describe how realistic and romantic it is.
I was particularly interested in the 5th book in the series; there was suspense on every page. I couldn't turn them fast enough to see what happens next! Raven's adventures are absolutely addicting!

Goth girl in Club Vampire
By R. C. Mulhare
I'd be the first to admit that I have a soft spot for this series: the characterization can be a little silly, but it's endearingly silly. Raven might be a little ditzy and clueless about what vampires are really like, but fortunately, the vampires in her world aren't *too* dangerous. Though, as she finds out when she follows Alexander, her vampire sweetheart, to "Hipsterville", she ventures deeper into the secret recesses of the town's Goth club, she finds that there's more going on among Alexander's kindred than she first assumed...

I'm a little dismayed that the self-awareness and self-questioning that Raven had started to display at the end of Book 4 didn't carry over into this volume, but since our girl is discovering more about Alexander's world and how it works, there probably wasn't much time for introspection.

It's the end of the school year, and Mrs. Daisy's class is going to "graduate" to third grade. A.J. and the class just found out that Ryan's mom, Mrs. Dole, is the new PTA president, and she has big plans for the celebration. Did you know you can Rent-A-Anything, even Blue Angels?!

MRS. DOLE IS OUT OF CONTROL is the first installment of the "My Weird School Daze" series, which follows the 21-book "My Weird School" series. The story is told from the point of view of A.J., a rambunctious boy who has a lot in common with Dennis the Menace.

The writing is on a young boy's level, but some parents may not appreciate the occasional name calling and A.J.'s attitude. A.J. isn't a great example of how to behave. On the other hand, a lot of A.J.'s perspective is typical of the average elementary-school boy. The best way to get someone interested in reading is to give them a book that speaks to them. Chances are, this book will relate to boys everywhere.

My seven year old son hates to read. He hates it with a passion. He came home with this book from the school library and read it in two days. He loves them. He thinks they are so funny. I get so excited to hear him laugh out loud at a BOOK finally. I had to buy him two other books in this series. Thank you, Mr. Gutman.

From Publishers Weekly
Following conviction for bank fraud, White spent a year in a minimum-security prison in Carville, La., housed in the last leper colony in mainland America. His fascinating memoir reflects on the sizable group of lepers living alongside the prisoners, social outcasts among the motley inmate crew of drug dealers, mob types and killers. Narrating in colorful, entertaining snapshots, White introduces the reader to an excellent supporting cast in his imprisonment: Father Reynolds, the peerless spiritual monk; Mr. Flowers, the no-nonsense case manager; Anne, the sorrowful mother with leprosy whose baby was taken from her arms; and Ella the Earth Mother, with wisdom to spare. Brisk, ironic and perceptive, White's introspective memoir puts a magnifying glass to a flawed life, revealing that all of life is to be savored and respected. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* White was a successful magazine publisher in 1993 when he was convicted of fraud and check kiting and sentenced to prison in Carville, Louisiana. He knew he was facing 18 months without his wife and two young children; he knew his enormous ego and ambition had landed him in prison; he knew he had to figure out a way to save his marriage and somehow rebound financially. What he didn’t know was that the isolated 100-year-old facility at Carville was home to a leper colony of 130 patients. He learned that the patients (some severely disfigured and disabled) and the 250 inmates eyed each other suspiciously across the corridors and breezeway, each thinking the other was the scourge of the earth. Because his work detail brought him into frequent contact with the patients, White developed strong relationships with them. His favorite was Ella, a dignified and beatific elderly black woman, who had lived at Carville for more than 50 years. Among the inmates, White encountered counterfeiters and tax evaders along with drug traffickers and carjackers. When the Bureau of Prisons decided to evict the leprosy patients, tensions built on both sides. White, near the end of his sentence and struggling to come to grips with the consequences of his crime, is caught in the middle. He offers a memoir of personal transformation and a thoroughly engaging look at the social, economic, racial, and other barriers that separate individuals that harden, dissolve, and reconfigure themselves when people are involuntarily thrust together over long periods. --Vanessa Bush

A Tale So Unbelievable It Could Only Be True
By John Werner
An educated white collar family man ends up a convicted criminal because of criminal behavior...Sadly, this is hardly remarkable. When said man ends up in a federal prison inside the United States first and last national leprosarium, The Carville Federal Medical Facility, well, it is not only remarkable, but quite unbelievable. The life of Neil White took just such a turn and "In the Sanctuary of Outcasts" chronicles that journey. Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.

Neil White was guilty before he ever had a criminal lapse. Guilty of idealism, arrogance, and materialism all of which, unbridled, fatally clouded his judgment. In the end those traits, and a few others, contributed to not one, but two collapsed businesses-each involving criminal activity - the last being of such a magnitude prosecution was guaranteed.

So the real journey begins when Neil's father drops him off at what he assumes is a minimum security federal penitentiary. When Neil realizes he is among the last segregated group of Americans with leprosy he feels as if he has stepped into a nightmare. Locked down among criminals in a leper colony and made to do menial labor for outcasts so isolated they literally no longer exist in the world Neil knew. Plus, he is surrounded by an odd assortment of criminals, which he is now one, who have been deemed of less value than lepers. Could it get worse? It did as Neil soon learned his wife was dissolving their marriage. Somehow through all of this Neil must seek to mend his own broken self and find redemption of his past and a meaningful path for his future.

In all of the darkness outlined above there lies a truly remarkable story. As things formerly held so dear are removed, Neil begins to see that which really does hold meaning. Thankfully there is a full cast of colorful characters, both afflicted with leprosy as well as those who appear courtesy of their criminal tendencies. These become some of the most important relationships as Neil navigates his own self discovery. He learns no man is an island; no man's value is measured in dollars, in titles, or even business accomplishments. Real value in life comes only through serving your fellowman and vice-versa.

I realize the story I've outlined is in many ways a cliché' in that man loses way, man goes to prison, man finds way...But, trust me this isn't that at all. It's so much more as it will likely touch and affect you in a much more personal way. I really loved this book. I simply couldn't put it down and since reading it I have been constantly revisiting how I might summon some of Ella's strength and grace. Read it and you'll know what I'm getting at. Highly recommended.

For A Great Read, You Can't Touch It...
By Carter Hooper
Wonderful, interesting, lively and surprisingly moving account of Mr. White's time as a prisoner served at the leprosarium in Carrville, LA. Haven't met a cast of characters this colorful since Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil. Lively, extremely interesting not only for the info about leprosy and the weird circumstances that brought a federal prison and a leprosarium together, but also a sweet accounting of Mr. White's personal trials, discoveries and eventual redemption. It's a first-class page turner.

A well written and meaningful memoir of the author's time in a minimum security prision
By Jojoleb
"In the Sanctuary of Outcasts" is Neil White's bittersweet memoir about serving time in Carville Prison in the late 1990s. Carville prison was no ordinary, white-collar penitentiary; it was also the last leprosarium ("leper colony") in the United States. Sentenced for kiting checks, White has to overcome the humiliation of his conviction, guilt for betraying friends and family, his crumbling marriage, and his initial revulsion of the patients suffering from leprosy.

Quite surprisingly, White finds a certain solace in this place. Although he initially believes that he is a cut above the other inmates, he realizes that he has far more in common with his fellow convicts than he previously believed. He also develops close relationships with the leprosy patients who help him through the hard times and whose inner strength give White the courage to look inside himself and the courage to ask for forgiveness.

White is able to convey his story effectively. He evocatively describes his life at Carville and the reader has no difficulty imagining what it was like to be there. He describes his fellow inmates and the patients with leprosy with compassion, humor, and dignity. He convincingly tells us how his time in prison transformed him, how he becomes a better person because of this experience.

White is a storyteller. He doesn't dwell on the philosophical. His revelations come through stories and we are able to see White through his own eyes and through his interactions with his fellow inmates, the patients, and his family. This makes the book as easy to read as it is meaningful.

One caveat, of course, is that the book is written solely from White's point of view. Although he seems truly repentant throughout the narrative and in his acknowledgments, his crime involved prolonged amounts of deception. I would certainly hope that the book is less about spin and more about catharsis for White, but this would be impossible to discern. Either way, the book is both moving and meaningful for the reader.

White is not beyond brazenly throwing in a literary reference. It is hard to overlook the fact that the title that shares both syllables and a certain assonance with "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. White mentions this book by name, as a book that was confiscated from him on entry to Carville. I am no literary critic, but Toole's book deals with some hard-hitting themes such powerlessness in the face of fate, legalized slavery, the crumbling of the Protestant work ethic, and the elusiveness of the American Dream. All of these are relevant to White's situation, of course, but the reference does little more than add a bit of ironic poetry to the title.

All in all, this is a well written, meaningful, and rewarding book to read. I highly recommend it.

A Must-Have Companion for Every Student Beginning Latin

Scribblers, Scvlptors, and Scribes is the first collection of entirely authentic, unadapted, unsimplified classical Latin texts that beginning students, from the very first day of their introduction to Latin, can read, enjoy, and profit from. These selections provide a wide range of insights into not just the minds of Rome's movers and shakers–her politicians and gen- erals, philosophers and great poets–but also into the daily lives of the Average Joe and Jane Roman.

Beginning with simple graffiti, Scribblers, Sculptors, and Scribes moves toward longer inscriptions and literary texts as students progress. Designed to accompany the bestselling Wheelock's curriculum, its 40 chapters are linked with the 40 chapters of Wheelock's Latin, but the book's readings and design features make it suitable for use alongside any introductory college or high school Latin textbook. Packed with hundreds of actual Latin inscriptions, proverbs, and literary texts, this unique textbook also includes dozens of photos and illustrations, maps, discussion and comprehension questions, grammar capsules, a Latin–English vocabulary section, a summary of forms, and much more.

About the Author

Richard A. LaFleur is Franklin Professor of Classics Emeritus and former Head of Classics at the University of Georgia; he has served as Editor of the Classical Outlook and President of the American Classical League, and is a recipient of the American Philological Association's national award for excellence in the teaching of Classics. Among his numerous books are Scribblers, Scvlptors, and Scribes and the revised editions of Wheelock's Latin, Workbook for Wheelock's Latin, and Wheelock's Latin Reader.

Excellent book ... a bit light on longer reading passages, though
By Michael R., "I, Demens"
This text gives the beginning student a nice exposure Latin epigraphy (study of inscriptions), and includes a pretty good range, from funerary inscriptions to graffiti. Each chapter has a few short Latin inscriptions transcribed first using more or less standard epigraphical notation, and then a second time in expanded format using capitalization, spacing, punctuation, etc. A vocabulary list of words not learned (keyed to the corresponding chapter in Wheelock) follows each passage, and there is a full vocabulary at the end. Overall, this makes the inscriptions quite accessible to the beginning student (which can be fairly satisfying!). Each chapter is also concluded by a short epigram or the like, and by a section entitled "proverbia et dicta" (which feel an awful lot like Wheelock's Sententiae Antique -- i.e., very short, discrete sentences taken out of context).

If you are using this book as supplementary readings for Wheelock (or any traditional "grammar-translation" textbook), however, I'm afraid it won't be enough. Wheelock is an excellent textbook in many ways. The presentation of the grammar is clear and well-organized, and there are lots of great ancillaries to help you get through the book. By far its biggest draw-back, however, is the lack of reading passages of any significant length. This means that the course, while teaching the grammar and syntax quite nicely, does not develop proficiency in reading Latin as much as it should. Students who finish Wheelock often have great difficulty making the transition to reading actual Latin texts (if the assignments are of any significant length). To ameliorate this situation, a student should supplement his or her studies with extended reading passages as soon as possible (certainly from the latter half of Wheelock to the end). Scribblers, Sculptors, and Scribes is an excellent book, but it doesn't have nearly enough longer reading passages.

One choice for more significant supplementary readings might be War with Hannibal: Authentic Latin Prose for the Beginning Student. It presents a considerable amount of a real Latin (enough to get you acquainted with reading Latin prose, yet not so much that you can't finish the book), and includes helpful notes geared toward the beginning student. Another possibility -- if you are brave -- is Augustus' Res Gestae. The Res Gestae Divi Augusti (Greek Commentaries Series) is quite inexpensive (though the notes could be a bit more thorough for the beginning student). You could also try reading some of the graded passages in Jones and Sidwell's Reading Latin: Text (say starting with the adapted Cicero about half way through the book). I myself am not crazy about Groton and May's 38 Latin Stories Designed to Accompany Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin (Latin Edition) (the Latin -- even from the latter half of the book -- feels too Anglicized). Many people like it though, and the main point is to read!

In any case, if you are using a standard grammar-translation textbook (as most of you are!), you really *must* supplement the textbook with as much reading as possible. It really is the only way to become a fluent reader (and feel prepared to some degree when you finish your textbook and begin to read real Latin texts). Exercises and discrete sentences are fine, but they are no substitute for reading, reading, reading!

Great companion to Wheelock's Latin
By John G. Sharp
Great companion to Wheelock's Latin and other introductory texts.

Dr. LaFleur has assembled a well chosen collection of texts that gets students reading "real" Latin. Many beginning students have found themselves agreeing with main character in Kingsley Amis's comic novel, Lucky Jim, regarding yet another assignment to translate Cicero: "that for a man so long and so thoroughly dead it was remarkable how much boredom Cicero could generate."

Professor Richard A. LaFleur's Scribblers, Sculptors and Scribes provides a superb alternative or adjunct to classic Latin with well chosen passages from the graffiti of Pompeii, "Paris hic Fuit" the perennial "Kilroy was here" or the gladiator as "the heartthrob of the girls" Susirium puellarum Celadus Thrcacus. A number of letters from the Vindolanda letters such as the famous birthday invitation by the wife of Roman Officer at fort near Hadrians wall are included, as well as examples of electoral programmata, campaigns and politics of Pompeii.

LaFleur's text is nicely illustrated with well chosen images of graffiti, tomb inscriptions etc.

A worthy addition
By michael
A great companion! My students are able to really engage with the snippets and scribbles despite being (currently) at a very rudimentary level. The beginning ones are extremely short and I could wish for more, but it provides good extra practice.

The Duke & Duchess of Fletcher
By Pamela
Title: An Affair Before Christmas
Author: Eloisa James
Genre: Historical (Georgian) Romance
Year: 2007
Rating: 4 Stars

I enjoyed Fletch and Poppy’s story but I found the other two stories going on to be distracting and at times irritating. I was very interested in the main couple and found myself trying to rush through all the side crap. I’d say this is a series that you’d have to read in order to completely understand all the side stories going on, apparently much of it is about later books in the series.

Desperate Duchesses series…
1) Desperate Duchesses
2) An Affair Before Christmas
3) Duchess By Night
4) When the Duke Returns
5) This Duchess of Mine
6) A Duke of Her Own

Very lacking
By Karol D. Trujillo
Poor. If it weren't for the Duke of Villiers, it wouldn't be interesting. Fletch was okay but Poppy and her mother weren't realistic. Very far extreme. And how Poppy could go from a frozen prude to a lustful creature practically overnight is beyond me. As for Fletch, putting up with a 4 year marriage with an ice queen wasn't realistic either. And the mother........nobody is so ridiculous as that. Men were evil, sex is evil and teaching her daughter that is incredible.

An Affair Before Christmas
By Amazon Customer
Overall I like the book but not that I love it very much. I usually take a day to finish a piece if i love the story so much I could not let go of it until I finished them. Anyway, I like the good ending and how they turn over their marriage. Of course, i love the links to Jemma and Elijah, the duke and duchess of beaumont.

There is a time to move on, a time to let go . . . and a time to fly.

Anxiety rules Annemarie Zimmer’s days—the fear that her relationship with the man she loves is growing stagnant; the fear that her equestrian daughter Eva’s dreams of Olympic glory will carry her far away from her mother . . . and into harm’s way. For five months, Annemarie has struggled to make peace with her past. But if she cannot let go, the personal battles she has won and the heights she has achieved will have all been for naught.

It is a time of change at Maple Brook Horse Farm, when loves must be confronted head-on and fears must be saddled and broken. But it is an unanticipated tragedy that will most drastically alter the fragile world of one remarkable family—even as it flings open gates that have long confined them, enabling them all to finally ride headlong and free.

Sentimental but lacking
By Marcy Henry
The ending was sweet and I love horses but the writer painstakingly writes about minutiae that detracts from the prose. I would probably not read another Sara Gruen novel.

Nice

A nice wrap up of the story begun in Riding Lessons. Since there are references to that first book which are not explained, I'd expect the two to be united as one book. Annemarie came across as annoying most of the time, but I forgave her. She's human, after all. All in all, these are a pair of satisfying books.

Review
“A bracing call to a new American revolution: a revolution of virtue. Give this book to friends who say there’s nothing to be done to heal a wounded culture.” (GEORGE WEIGEL, distinguished senior fellow, Ethics and Public Policy Center)

“Few elements of Catholic social teaching have been more forcefully stated, or more regularly ignored, than our calling to bring Christian teachings to bear on social, political, and economic issues. Anderson seeks to bring that message home.” (MARY ANN GLENDON, Learned Hand Professor of Law, Harvard University)

“Anderson artfully weaves theory and practice, giving us a rare specimen indeed: a practical guide for idealists.” (JOHN L. ALLEN JR., senior correspondent, National Catholic Reporter)

“Anderson has written a book brimming with insights into the transforming power of Christian faith. A Civilization of Love is both a call to personal holiness and a handbook for Catholics who are prepared to take seriously Christ’s command to his disciples to be ‘salt and light’ in the world.” (ROBERT P. GEORGE, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University)

By embracing the culture of life and standing with those most marginalized . . . Christians can change the tone and direction of our culture. Anderson demonstrates that we can come together on the centrality of loving and caring for others (San Francisco Examiner)

Gives Concrete Advice on How we can Change the World
By Patrice Fagnant-macarthur
Is it possible for our Catholic faith to transform our increasingly secular culture? Carl Anderson answers that question with a resounding "Yes!" in his new book "A Civilization of Love: What Every Catholic Can Do to Transform the World." Anderson is the leader of the Knights of Columbus, the world's largest Catholic fraternal group. He has worked closely with both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI and has served on several Vatican committees. In "A Civilization of Love," he relies heavily on the teachings of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, especially the theology of the body and Pope Benedict's recent encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God is Love).

Anderson begins with St. Paul's visit to Athens between 50 - 58 AD to illustrate how one person could begin to change a culture. The Greeks believed in many gods, but they had a shrine to an "unknown god." While this was primarily to make sure that they were not angering any gods that they might have forgotten, St. Paul used this as a jumping off point to begin to introduce them to the Judeo-Christian God. Anderson argues that "the responsibility of Christians in our own time remains as it was in Paul's - to radically transform culture, not by imposing values from above, but through a subtler yet more powerful process - living a vocation of love in the day-to-day reality of our lives."

Our world has become increasingly secular. A faith in God has been replaced by a faith in progress. The belief in a creator who has endowed us all with certain unalienable rights is falling by the wayside. "Human life is reduced to a meaning and purpose only in reference to this world, which is asking of this world something that it does not have the power to give." In contrast, Jesus' great commandment was to love God and one another. "It is the vocation to love that not only makes each person, but makes each person human."

"A Civilization to Love" focuses on Catholic social values, what it means to love our neighbor. Especially as lay persons, we are called to work in the world. We are called to change society by the way we raise our families and conduct our business affairs. We are called to witness to what it means to be a people rooted in faith. Everything we possess has been given by God. "Every talent is given as a gift. Every moment is a chance and an opportunity for conveying love. . . Fundamentally, one of the only ways in which we can show our love for God physically is through service to him through people."

Anderson focuses on the ways we can serve in our families, our workplaces, and in the global economy. He discusses many of the social ills that face Catholics and the world today such as the breakdown of the family, the reality of abortion, the increase in working hours, the loss of the Sabbath rest, the need for more ethical behavior in the workplace and government, and adjusting to a changing Church. He offers concrete ways Catholics can make a difference.

Catholics do have the power to transform the world. "They will do so by their actions, by their attitudes, and by their influence. But above all, they will do so by their love. This love is a matter not of mere high-minded sentimentality but of genuine compassion tempered with a well-grounded realism. It is a love that offers hope not only for eternity but for a better way of life on this earth." "A Civilization of Love" invites us all to be part of that transformation. It is up to us to answer the call.

Omnia vincit amor *
By Kerry Walters
"We cannot have compassion without acknowledging the suffering of others." This sentence (p. 167) crisply expresses Carl Anderson's central claim in A Civilization of Love that a reinvigoration of the Catholic tradition of personalism can transform the world. When we focus on individuals rather than abstract data, we discern the contours of their suffering--a suffering in which, we also realize, we're too often complicit. But we also discern the fact that they, made in the likeness of God, are eminently lovable. Just as Christ lovingly makes himself a gift to us in the Eucharist, so we're moved by compassionate love to give ourselves to them (p. 55). The goal is more than mere community; the goal is communion.

This vision of compassionate love as the catalyst for both vertical (human-God) and horizontal (human-human) relationships is as old as Christianity. Anderson draws on a diverse wealth of thinkers--for example, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, Paul Ricoeur, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Robert Coles, Freud, Lao Tsu, Aquinas, and George Orwell--to argue for the vision's contemporary relevance. His defense is gracefully and judiciously written.

One of the outstanding qualities of Anderson's treatment is that he refrains from lapsing into a circle-the-wagons shrillness, a temptation into which many religious critics of modern secular culture fall. He makes it clear in his first chapter that he finds the "Whig version of history's" focus on material progress naively optimistic, and his subsequent examinations of education (Chapter 3), Christian humanism (Chapter 4), family (Chapter 5), globalization, work, and economics (Chapters 6 and 7), and right to life issues (Chapter 8) underscore his reservations about secularization. But Anderson spends more energy in setting forth his positive alternative model than wringing his hands over the old one.

Although I quite like Anderson's book and his personalist approach, I have two reservations. The first is the book's surprising silence on issues of war and peace. Both John Paul and Benedict have written strong personalist-oriented denunciations of war that redefine traditional just war doctrine. Given the fact that the US just passed the fifth anniversary of our latest war, it's odd that there's no mention of Catholic teaching on the violence of warfare.

My other reservation is Anderson's treatment of work and economics. While acknowledging that capitalism unleavened by love can reduce human relationships to consumerist manipulation, Anderson ultimately concludes that the economic structure that births huge multi-national corporations isn't itself the problem. Rather, the problem is the abuse of the system by unscrupulous individuals, and a love-ethic is needed to reinforce the Catholic notion of "business as a calling" (a phrase Anderson borrows from Michael Novak, p. 120). While I see his point, I also think that a stronger case can be made for overhauling the entire system. The current subprime mortgage debacle, for example, surely hasn't been caused by a few bad apples. It's a reflection of the way in which our current economic system encourages systemic greed. Anderson's treatment strikes me as too individualistic.

Having said this, though, Anderson's book is highly recommended. It's a refreshing and inspiring defense of the social consequences of taking the "absurd" (as Paul Ricoeur puts it) commandments to love God, to love our neighbors, and to love our enemies, seriously.

Defining the "good life" - in a different way
By Richard Lender
The dust jacket of Carl Anderson's "A Civilization of Love" strikes a seemingly familiar note: "The battle today is between the culture of death (where people are judged by their social or economic value) and the culture of life." The expectation might be yet another polemical broadside to weigh down shelves already overloaded with such wares: The world is going to hell in a hand basket; hang on for the ride.

Yet Anderson seems to be up to something more, and that something more is evident almost immediately in the first pages of "A Civilization of Love." The polarity is only a starting point, rather than an apocalyptic call to arms - or a trumpet to sound retreat to the hills. Anderson is the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, so it is unsurprising to see him choose his title from a phrase by Pope John Paul II. Is it a throwaway? Is it an empty phrase? Is it an opposition - such as many have tried to draw - against the smaller "mustard seed" idea of the Church and Christianity of John Paul's successor, Benedict XVI?

The answer only becomes fully clear when Anderson reveals his working paradigm in his conclusion. Anderson latches on to three possible approaches of the Christian to society identified by twentieth century Protestant theologian H. Richard Niebuhr: 1) "Christ against culture," with Christ's message understood as a call to revolt against, or at least separate from, society; 2) "Christ of culture," an Enlightenment idea of Christianity as fully compatible with society, and Christ reduced merely to a great moral teacher; or 3) "Christ above culture" - the Christian message as engaged with, yet distinct from, the world. It is this last approach that Anderson embraces, and provides his thesis. "The message and event of Jesus Christ," Anderson insists, "cannot be limited simply to an affirmation - or for that matter, a repudiation - of existing cultural norms." Human beings are called to love. And because they are called to love, it is only by (re)building a culture, a civilization, which loves that we can overcome the conflicts and threats we face today. And in this great task, the Catholic, the Christian, is indispensable: This is the great work we are called to.

All of may sound rather rarified. "Civilization of Love," however, is a very accessible work to the educated layman, and eminently practical, and remarkably succinct (only 173 pages). Every chapter ends with a short list of "Suggestions for Contemplation and Action." The survey for this engagement ranges from the very smallest unit of society, the family ("The Domestic Church") to the largest, the increasingly intertwined (and yet conflicted) global society ("Globalization and the Gospel of Work"). Anderson clearly hopes to do more than move books; he wants to move the world. And like Archimedes, he has found a lever, the only lever, capable of doing so: the salvific grace of Christ, the very embodiment of love.

In short, "A Civilization of Love" is a valuable contribution to the public discourse between the Christian and the secular - one at once both intellectual and eminently practical.
