“Between Amelia Peabody and Indiana Jones, it’s Amelia—in wit and daring—by a landslide.”
—New York Times Book Review

Intrepid archaeologist and superior sleuth Amelia Peabody returns in A River in the Sky. In this breathtaking new adventure, New York Times bestselling Grand Master Elizabeth Peters transports the indomitable Amelia and her family, the Emersons, from their usual milieu, early twentieth-century Egypt, to an exciting—and dangerous—new locale: Palestine! A tale full of atmosphere, intrigue, and thrills, A River in the Sky is further proof that “Peters has few rivals” (Houston Chronicle).

Woot! A new Amelia Peabody Emerson tale is worthy of celebration
By Saralee Etter
I read this entire book with a huge grin on my face. Amelia is back in perfect form, and so is Emerson.

This book takes place in 1910, and in the story chronology it falls between Guardian of the Horizon and Falcon at the Portal. I think Ramses is about 18 here, and you can see him in the process of becoming the man he is in later installments.

This 19th entry into the series is wonderful fun--and is concentrated on the activities of just the central members of the clan, which makes the story feel like a return to some of the earlier tales where there wasn't such an enormous cast of characters to keep track of. While I like knowing what all the various characters are up to, it's nice to focus on the main characters this time.

The Emersons manage to dominate any landscape they enter, and their excursion into the Holy Land brings in some new and interesting elements.

Fans of the Emersons will rejoice!

Amelia is back!
By Amy Phipps
I've been a fan of Elizabeth Peters for over 20 years, so the prospect of a new Amelia book is always thrilling to me. I was admittedly a bit disappointed in the last book in the series, which, though wonderfully written, was really more of a tribute to King Tut's tomb than an Amelia story. This book, on the other hand, was back to Peters' classic formula. Another dead body? Another shirt ruined? Heavenly!

The story takes place in pre-WWI 1910, as Amelia, Emerson, and company head to Palestine to stop a politically and religiously sensitive excavation of holy ground. It was wonderful to see Amelia and Emerson charging around berating political and religious leaders alike for their failures in the region, and even better to see Ramses as a tentative, developing 23 year-old. With a good plot, credible villains, and a cast of characters small enough that I was able to enjoy them all to the fullest, I loved every minute of it... especially Sethos' appearance (which all of the Emersons missed - but I didn't!) A treasure for any long-time fan of the series and highly recommended!

Welcome back, Peabody!
By NC Reader
I agree with some reviews that this installment was shorter and lacking in detail in places, but it reminded me of what got me hooked on this series in the first place 20 years ago - Peabody and Emerson! Peabody's "little lists"; her parasol; her self-confidence; her steely, take-no-prisoners mentality (all wrapped up in the perfect decorum of a Victorian British lady, of course); and the wonderful driving force behind the series, the passionate yet loving relationship she shares with Emerson, her hunky, hilarious, brilliant and outspoken husband, "the greatest Egyptologist of this or any other age". They are a delicious pair, with their "refreshing discussions", charging in where angels fear to tread, fighting the good fight against spies, criminals, inept bureaucrats, archeologists and hypocrites everywhere.

So, while I agree that this might not be up to the excellent standards Ms. Peters set for herself in previous books, her middling best is still better than a lot of what is out there for mystery buffs - especially those of us who enjoy a large dollop of humor in the mix - so I liked it and gave it four stars accordingly. I only hope there are more Peabody and Emerson adventures to come, whether they are set after 1922 or during the "in-between years"!

Why Mars and Venus Collide: Improving Relationships

Once upon a time, Martians and Venusians functioned in separate worlds. But in today's hectic and career-oriented environment, relationships have become a lot more complicated, and men and women are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress. To add to the increasing tension, most men and women are also completely unaware that they are actually hardwired to react differently to the stress. It's a common scenario: a husband returns home from work stressed out and eager to kick back on the couch and watch television. A wife returns home from work stressed out and wants to talk about it with her husband. What happens? Neither is on the same page, anger and resentment set in, and Mars and Venus collide.

Using his signature insight that has helped millions of couples transform their relationships, John Gray once again arms the inhabitants of Mars and Venus with information that will help them live harmoniously ever after. In Why Mars and Venus Collide, Gray focuses on the ways that men and women misinterpret and mismanage the stress in their daily lives, and how these reactions ultimately affect their relationships. "It's not that he's just not into you; he needs to fulfill a biological need," Gray explains. "And it's not that she wants to henpeck you; she also has a biological drive." He shows, for instance, how a husband's withdrawal is actually a natural way for him to replenish his depleted testosterone levels and restore his well-being, and how a woman's need for conversation and support helps her build her own stress-reducing hormone, oxytocin.

Backed up by groundbreaking scientific research, Gray offers a clear, easy-to-understand program to bridge the gap between the two planets, providing effective communication strategies that will actually lower stress levels. Whether in a relationship or single, this book will help both men and women understand their new roles in a modern, work-oriented society, and allow them to discover a variety of new and practical ways to create a lifetime of love and harmony.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon.com Exclusive: Notes on Why Mars & Venus Collide by John Gray

Over the last fifty years, life has become more complicated. Longer working hours, intensified by grueling commutes and more traffic, the increased cost of housing, food, and health care, rising credit card debt, and the combined responsibilities of work and childcare in two-career families are only a few of the sources of stress in our fast-paced modern lives. In spite of the new technologies designed to connect us, information overload and round-the-clock accessibility via the Internet and cell phones have reduced much of our communication to the equivalent of text messaging. We are stretched to the limit, with little energy for our personal lives. Despite increased independence and opportunities for success at work, we are often left with a sense of isolation and exhaustion at home.

The unprecedented levels of stress both men and women are experiencing is taking a toll on our romantic relationships. Whether single or in committed relationships, we are often too busy or too tired to sustain feelings of attraction, motivation, and affection. Everyday stress drains our energy and patience and leaves us feeling too exhausted or overwhelmed to enjoy and support each other.

We are often too busy to see what is obvious. A man will give his heart and soul to make enough money to provide for his family and return home too tired even to talk with them. A woman will give and give to support her husband and children and then resent them for not giving back the kind of support she thrives on giving. Under the influence of stress, men and women forget why we do what we do.

Over the last fifteen years, a new trend in relationships has emerged linked to increasing stress. Both couples and singles believe they are too busy or too exhausted to resolve their relationship issues, and often think their partners are either too demanding or just too different to understand. Attempting to cope with the increasing stress of working for a living, both men and women feel neglected at home. While some couples experience increasing tension, others have just given up, sweeping their emotional needs under the carpet. They may get along, but the passion is gone.

Without an understanding of our different needs, men and women are adjusting their actions and reactions to no avail. Our actions may be pointed in the wrong direction. Why Mars and Venus Collide provides a new understanding and a variety of techniques you will need to counter the disruptive effects of stress and to steer a true course to a lifetime of love.

Remembering and understanding our differences are only half the battle. The other half is about action--learning to cope more effectively with stress. This book aims to help you discover new ways to lower your own stress and help to lower your partner’s. Whether you are in a relationship, starting over, or single, you will discover a variety of new and practical ways to improve your communication, uplift your mood, increase your energy, elevate levels of attraction in your relationship, create harmony with your partner, and enjoy a lifetime of love and romance. You will learn why communication breaks down or why your relationships have failed in the past, and what you can do now to ensure success in the future.

From Publishers Weekly
Gray reads his take on why men and women are growing incapable of managing their relationships because of our work-oriented society. While not exactly as groundbreaking as it labels itself, Gray's insights are truthful and easy to understand. His reading is straightforward and slightly bland, but the lessons he preaches are the real stars. Gray offers simple insights for both sexes, useful even if you aren't involved in a relationship. However, this book lacks profound lessons or discoveries, and listeners searching for that tidbit of information that will save their relationship may be disappointed. Gray's reading also is somewhat disengaged from the material, which makes listening to him a chore at times. Simultaneous release with the Harper hardcover (Reviews, Dec. 13, 2007).

Abigail and John: Portrait of a Marriage, by Edith Gelles

Married in 1764, Abigail and John Adams worked side by side for a decade, raising a family while John became one of the most prosperous, respected lawyers in Massachusetts. When his duties as a statesman and diplomat during the Revolutionary War expanded, Abigail and John endured lengthy separations. But their loyalty and love remained strong, as their passionate, forthright letters attest. It's in this correspondence that Abigail comes into her own as an independent woman. It's also in these exchanges that we learn about the familial tragedies that tested them: the early deaths of their son Charles from alcoholism and their daughter Nabby from breast cancer.

As much a romance as it is a lively chapter in early American history, Abigail and John is an inspirational portrait of a couple who endured the turmoil and trials of a revolution, and in so doing paved the way for the birth of a nation.

From Booklist
John and Abigail Adams were married for 54 years. There are, of course, numerous biographies of each of them, but this is the first full-length joint biography. Gelles’ focus here is on the relationship, even partnership, between two highly intelligent, strong-willed individuals. Although Gelles places them within the context of the great events swirling around them, this is a rather intimate, small-scale account. Gelles does not break any new ground. Based substantially on correspondence, the portraits of John and Abigail are familiar: John brilliant, principled, and often inflexible; Abigail his intellectual match and a complement to him, with a calmer demeanor and better social skills. To her credit, Gelles does not try to inflate Abigail’s influence on public policies. Despite her independent spirit and occasional suggestions to “remember the ladies,” this was essentially an eighteenth-century marriage, with Abigail concerned with domestic affairs as she endured long periods of separation from her husband. Still, this is a fine, well-documented examination of a long, successful partnership. --Jay Freeman

From the Back Cover

The marriage of John and Abigail Adams is one of the most extraordinary examples of passion and endurance that this country has ever witnessed. Using their letters, Abigail & John provides an inspirational portrait of a couple who weathered the trials of a revolution, and in so doing paved the way for the birth of a nation.

Abigail scores!
By Birdman
It is not that the prodigiously gifted Edith Gelles brings anything new to the John-and-Abigail story or to the episodes of post-Revolutionary America of which they were part. Instead -- more than any previous work by a noted historian -- except, perhaps for Phyllis Levin -- Gelles emphasizes in in an unambiguous way the critical role Abigail Adams played in the early life of the Republic.

Even as she reiterates the awful political impact of Adams'Alien and Sedition Acts, it is Abigail's staunch adherence to the underlying morality and strategic value of the acts, in the context of the age, which vindicates their passage. A woman of fierce intelligence and unbridled humor, her breathless engagement in every facet of the Revolution and its aftermath is the stuff of great history.

While some read history to catalog facts, I read it for Story. Gelle's story is riveting and her storytelling gifts -- of economy and language -- make this an irresistible read. Some will argue about Gelles'specific theoretical statements or peripheral details of events within and beyond the Adams family, but I don't have time for that minutiae. Academic history aside (and history is often a pure construct) Gelles' book is also a superb family chronicle, unparalleled by any I've read over the past five years.

As someone who was once an academic, I've noted two types of history books in recent years: those to be shelved and those to be read. The shelved volumes have gazette value and are often doorstops consisting of 50% text and 50% source-notes. Gelles'intends her well-documented book to be read and read again, and her language is so accessible the work is suitable for intelligent readers of all ages.

As for Abigail, whose reputation and importance have survived the ages, Gelles resurrects her thoughts, actions and spirit with such verve, the book is an indispensable read for most gender-neutral fans of the American Revolution

Democracy was always noisy & messy!

Wonderful dual biography of John & Abigail Adams. Author blends their Puritan religious beliefs with their close marriage and tumultuous birth of America in a thorough overview of history.
Very enjoyable with excellent cast and settings.

Marriage, Love and Friendship
By Lauren Cetlin
Expecting to read a biography/textbook, I was pleasantly surprised that Abigail and John felt more like that great novel one can't wait to come home from work to resume reading.I found myself feeling upset at their hardships of family crisis and years of separation. I hoped that their marriage would survive the long years apart from each other, that John and Thomas Jefferson could resolve their differences, that their daughter would survive breast cancer.I enjoyed entering into the world of Abigail and John in New England and Europe during the time of "The Founding Fathers" - and MOTHERS. This is a book about marriage, love, and friendship.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality, love, survival or history. Expect a well researched, factual biography written in a heartfelt manner.

A Life Less Ordinary: A Memoir, by Baby Halder

Abandoned by her mother, beaten by her father, and hurriedly married off at twelve to an abusive man twice her age, Baby Halder's early life was marked by overwhelming challenges and heartbreak. Exhausted and desperate, the young mother finally fled with her three children in 1999 to Delhi, where she found work as a maid in some of the city's wealthiest homes.

Expected to serve her employers' every grueling demand, Halder faced a staggering workload that often left her no time to care for her own children.

The young woman's luck finally turned when she started working for Prabodh Kumar, a retired anthropology professor who noticed Halder's interest in his library. Kumar helped her to read his books and newspapers—which she devoured enthusiastically—then suggested that she write down her own life story. In A Life Less Ordinary, the fascinating result of her writing sessions with Kumar, Halder speaks for a multitude of Indian women, revealing a world of poverty and subjugation few outsiders have heard about. Halder writes simply and candidly of her life as a young girl, and later as a struggling mother.

Without a trace of melodrama or self-pity, she describes her experiences of growing up poor and neglected, struggling to manage children and a violent husband while she herself was only fourteen years old, and, finally, of escaping her past ultimately to triumph as a writer.

Already a huge success in India, where it has been published in Hindi, Bengali, and several other languages, A Life Less Ordinary is an astonishing story of strength, courage, and determination that continues to inspire readers everywhere.

From Booklist
A best-seller in India, this stirring autobiography, translated from Bengali and Hindi, is about poverty and brutal child labor, not in factories but at home. When Halder's mother leaves, the child struggles to stay in school, but her father marries her off at 12 to a man more than twice her age, and she bears him three children. Her husband beats her, stones her, and abuses his children. No one helps until finally she dares to leave him and works in backbreaking jobs as a live-in domestic, determined to educate her kids. True to the brave young girl's viewpoint, the plain, first-person narrative is sometimes just too repetitive. But there are unforgettable scenes, as when the pregnant 13-year-old yearns to join her classmates at play and in the classroom. The astonishing Cinderella ending is rooted in gritty realism: Halder's new boss, like the kind father she never had, sees her reading his books as she dusts them and encourages her to write her own story—this story. Important book, important topic.
By Marie
I read this book in basically one sitting. It was a page-turner, in that I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. "End" is a funny word for the ending because the author Baby Halder is still so young with a long life ahead of her. This is a phenomenal book, not just because it tells Baby's story, but because it tells a story that millions of women around the world share. And we need to hear this story. And what makes it more phenomenal is that the author was able to break free from abuse and poverty to write an internationally published book and share her story of a life less ordinary.

I spent much of the book wondering how I could've dealt with the loss of my mother or the tolerated murder of my sister or the unimagineable thought of my 12 year old daughter getting married and having children, or if I would've had the courage to get on a train with my children and nothing more to try to find a better life.

An issue with the writing in this book is that the author frequently switches from 1st to 3rd person, but I looked at it like less of a grammatical error and more of the author speaking in 3rd person when the topic was very painful. I really highly recomend this book.

Really wanted to love this novel but couldnt even finish it.....
By MLRapp
I feel horrible for giving this book a bad rating, but I want to be as honest as possible with my reviews. I really wanted to love this book, for the author's life and everything she had to endure is truly remarkable. I also thought this would be an important book to read as a woman, due to the main theme of how women are treated in other parts of the world. I just had a very hard time reading it because it was so poorly written, so choppy and confusing at times (i.e., going from one type of narrative to another - writing in first person to writing about herself in the third person; confusing dialogue; and paragraphs that seemed to end at times without continuing the thought or story. While I acknowledge how amazing it is for someone who came from such a difficult upbringing and little education to have written a novel that not only got published, but is beloved in so many countries, I wish there was a lot more editing, so that her story could have been told more fluidly, as it truly is a story to be told and shared with the world. Perhaps it was lost in translation somehow when transcribed from Hindi into English?
Regardless, I did not personally like this book, although the author's story is absolutely incredible and worth knowing about. Therefore, I can only recommend it with caution- if you can look psat the writing, you may enjoy it.

A book less ordinary
By P.J. Hoffeditz
Yes, the style is basic, perhaps even crude, but Halder's sometimes halting prose is effective in communicating the pain and chaos of her life. The abrupt transitions between first and third person are very effective: they allow both the author and the reader some distance from painful introspections.
While there are many very distressing episodes, the book is basically hopeful. Allow this book to evoke empathy, and perhaps even motivate you to act on behalf of women, children, and/or the poor.

Review
"Once I picked up 'Evernight' I couldn't put it down! I can't wait for Claudia Gray's next book!" L. J. Smith, best-selling author of 'The Vampire Diaries'

About the Author

Claudia Gray is the pseudonym of New Orleans-based writer Amy Vincent, the author of the New York Times bestselling Evernight series. She has worked as a lawyer, a journalist, a disc jockey, and an extremely poor waitress. Her grandparents' copy of Mysteries of the Unexplained is probably the genesis of her fascination with most things mysterious and/or inexplicable.

just ok
By Rebecca Beltzner
I found these books / the series/ confusing and not very well written after the first one. I also felt the ending in the last book fell flat. Not terrible, but not on par with other vampire series.

A Lackluster Afterlife
By Kale
Claudia Gray is tying up all the loose ends in the conclusion to her Evernight series. The book picks up as Lucas is about to rise from his first death to start his second life as a vampire. Lucas' internal struggle with becoming the very thing he was taught to hate, isn't his only battle. Now he has to fight the hunger. And live with the stigma of Black Cross among his previous prey. Bianca is still learning what it means to be a wraith, along with her own issues about being dead. Lucas, Bianca, and our favorite side kicks all journey back to Evernight. Along the way Lucas will face his mom, we find out exactly what Mrs. Bethany is up to with all those ghosts and if love really can transcend all obstacles.

The highlight of Afterlife was the supporting cast. Vic and Ranulf stole the show. Ranulf's backwards old english translations never failed to make me laugh. Patrice, Dana, and Raquel also join the mix and proved what real friendship truly is. There are some tough family issues as well. The overall message is what are the limits of love. Gray explores quite a few variations within different relationships.

Some low points. Unfortunately I can't say the highlight was the love story. The romance is why I read and followed the series. But they were more like an old married couple than star crossed teenage lovers. Bianca's constant repetitive blaming of Lucas' undead state on Balthazar. I can understand why she's upset, I just wish every time Bianca complained about it that it would be phrased differently. It was worded exactly the same each time. And became redundant. Unfortunately she harped on it a lot. I also didn't care for the end. It was neat and tidy, all my favorite people lived, but I found to be a bit of a let down. It was safe. Sweet. Tame. Normally I don't like tragedies, but Afterlife needed something messy and imperfect. It needed something more profound. Even though Bianca and Lucas were going in opposite directions individually their relationship seem to be working just fine. Almost like they had worked though all the major obstacles in the previous books. Afterlife was really focused on their separate struggles, when readers like me are more interested in their couple troubles. I guess it needed more angst. Maybe the ending would have sat with me better if there was more drama in their relationship during the book.

Afterlife was OK. It was entertaining. But it didn't move me as much as some of the other books in the series. The romance was lackluster, anticlimactic. The end was sufficient but nothing I'm going to swoon over. I think it's a toss up either your going to love it, or feel stood up. The best part of the ending for me was the full page announcement of a spin off featuring Balthazar.

This Series Just Keeps Getting Cheesier
By Christina (A Reader of Fictions)
Oh my goodness, the sappiness and cheesiness that comprise these books! They have always been this way, but I think they have been getting worse as they have gone along. I laughed out loud several times at the 'romantic' scenes. Are you wondering, why does she keep reading the Evernight series if she thinks it's so bad? Well, I really can't say. Once I read the first two books in a series, I generally feel compelled to finish (although I gave up on the House of Night books by the Casts). Besides that, my only other reason is that I make bad choices sometimes.

Okay, so I'm assuming that if you're reading this review, you either have already read the previous books and are acquainted with the plot or that you have no intention of ever reading them, so don't care about spoilers. At the opening of the novel, Bianca and Lucas are both dead; she's a wraith and he's a vampire. But (big surprise) being dead cannot stop their love (seriously, I'm so moved), as they keep reminding one another every three pages.

Of course, maybe they don't love each other as much in this situation. There is that human girl that Lucas befriended. Could just be me, but, had events transpired differently, I could imagine them getting along really well, if you catch my drift. Besides, Bianca said this: "It wasn't that I loved him any less for being dead--how could I?--but I knew that his life was something I loved about Lucas, and it was gone" (89). Really? I'm buying it. You don't love him less; you just loved him more before. That makes perfect sense. This is true love that lasts forever folks.

Best moment of the book, in my humble opinion, resulted from some poor editing. The final chapter begins with this awesome sentence: "I flashed myself to the small group of people huddled around Lucas's fallen form" (231). I assume that this is supposed to refer to some form of ghostly transportation method. However, what it actually says is that Bianca took off her ghostly jammies and gave everyone a little peek after the big battle. How awesome is that? This book needs better editing.

Hunter's Run, by George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dozois, Daniel Abraham

A new benchmark in modern SF. A sharp, clever, funny morality tale that answers the biggest question of all: what makes us human? A fight in an alley behind a bar: a visiting European is knifed by local thug Ramon Espejo and all hell breaks loose. The dead man was a diplomat on an important mission to Sao Paulo, and next day Ramon is on the run heading north in his van toward land that no one has ever explored, or even thought of exploring, land so far only glimpsed from orbit during the first colony surveys. There are women still alive on Sao Paulo who can recall the initial descent onto an untouched world. All the cities of the south have bloomed since then, like mould on a Petri dish. Ramon was among the second wave of colonists. He's gone from being nothing in the hills of Mexico to being nothing on this strange alien world. His only friend Griego tells Ramon God meant him to be poor, or he wouldn't have made him so mean. Ramon's rage has never deserted him. It was there in the alley behind the bar, but he can't actually remember why he killed the European. Leaving all the hell and shit and sorrow of Diegotown behind, Ramon's plan is to look for minerals in the unmapped lands while the heat dies down. He's made a bare living prospecting so far, expecting each trip to be the big one that'll make him rich, and this one is no different. The first samples he blows out of the mountain, however, bring down the mountain upon him as well and a whole undiscovered alien race. Ramon is tethered to one of them and set to 'perform his function'. Whatever that means, he'll find out. And he'll remember why he killed the European.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Martin (Song of Ice and Fire series), Dozois (Strange Days) and Abraham (A Shadow in Summer) revisit classic themes of exploration, exploitation and what it means to be human in this gritty SF adventure. Humanity has finally reached the stars, only to find that all the best spots have been claimed by other races—the Silver Enye, Turu, Cian and others. Human colonists serve as world-building crash-test dummies, dropped onto empty planets deemed too dangerous or inconvenient for other races, to pave over whatever marvels and threats evolution had put there. On the misbegotten colony planet of São Paulo, ore prospector Ramon Espejo has no illusions, especially about how the Enye view humanity. Then Ramon murders the wrong man in a drunken fight and takes off into the wastelands to avoid the Enye authorities. Once in the outback, he discovers he's not the only one trying to hide from the Enye—and that the deadly cat-lizards called chupacabras are far from the worst dangers on São Paulo. This tightly written novel, with its memorable protagonist and intriguing extrapolation, delivers on all levels. (Jan.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
In music, supergroups of established artists are rarely greater than the sum of their parts. The same often goes for science fiction, but critics agreed that these three authors beat the trend by producing a tight, consistent novel. Whether because of Martin’s decades of collaborative work, Dozois’s long career as an editor, or Abraham’s fresh prose style, every reviewer said the book seemed as if it were written by one person. The only complaint came from reviewers who had read an earlier, novella-length version of the story; they felt that expanding the story enriched it somewhat, but not by much. While it would be hard to match Hunter’s Run with any of these authors’ previous works, it can certainly be called a successful experimentâ€"and a compelling SF novel.

One tough son of a gun!
By Tasawuf
Right in the tradition of those venerable sci-fi masters of the mid 20th century, "Hunter's Run" is a classic, kick-butt story that has it all: advances in technology; weird, advanced alien races; and, despite all the advances, the more things change, the more they stay the same. A far-off future setting on a far-off, beautiful planet in a solar system far, far away, and all the folks still scrabbling to survive...complete with classic power struggles just to survive in an overall culture dominated by those physically more powerful or technologically advanced.

The beauty of this whole story is the creative, existential experience provided to the central figure, Ramon Espejo, to REALLY get to see himself in a way that few, if any, ever do.....and, what he gets to see and experience ain't freaking pretty! However, the experience, including that with one of the more advanced alien races, helps to free him from his endless, unconscious, vicious, circular cycle of existence. If the reader of this book understands that he gets to participate with Ramon in and on his journey, the reader's experience has the potential to be transformative. And, dear reader, that is a bonus.... for there is a bit of Ramon, at the least, in each of us.

Well done authors...Brilliantly well done! Thank you for the ride.

A fast-paced book that leaves you thinking
By sane martian
Loved this book and was surprised by the setting given it was co-written by George R R Martin. Lots of twists, good pace of action and definitely leaves you thinking.

Not "Song of Ice and Fire" or "Long Price Quartet"
By Rick H
I bought this book because I love George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (who doesn't? -- see A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)) and his student Daniel Abraham's excellent Long Price Quartet (see A Shadow in Summer (The Long Price Quartet)). I was not familiar with Gardner Dozois.

Do not expect either series. Sure, this is sort of a science fiction book, in that it takes place on a colonized planet, has an alien race that shuttles humans around, and vehicles that hover. This is the story of one man's flight from his crime, his discovery of and capture by another alien race, and his struggle to get free -- all the while having to come to terms with who he is, what is right and wrong, and where and how things belong. The evolution of this character in his struggle to survive is fascinating -- and while it sounds like a very introspective story, it's still a solid adventure.

This is a bit of a brainy book - folks who like Fantasy or Science Fiction for fast paced action may not like this. This is for people who like serious character and story development. And, of course, Martin just happens to be a master at that.

Highly recommended.

A Father's Law, by Richard Wright

Never before published, the final work of one of America's greatest writers

A Father's Law is the novel Richard Wright, acclaimed author of Black Boy and Native Son, never completed. Written during a six-week period near the end of his life, it appears in print for the first time, an important addition to this American master's body of work, submitted by his daughter and literary executor, Julia, who writes:

It comes from his guts and ends at the hero's "breaking point." It explores many themes favored by my father like guilt and innocence, the difficult relationship between the generations, the difficulty of being a black policeman and father, the difficulty of being both those things and suspecting that your own son is the murderer. It intertwines astonishingly modern themes for a novel written in 1960.

Prescient, raw, powerful, and fascinating, A Father's Law is the final gift from a literary giant.

From Publishers Weekly
The centennial of Richard Wright's birth occasions the publication of this still-unfinished crime novel, which Wright was working on when he died in 1960. Ruddy Turner, a black Chicago police officer, is appointed the police chief of a rich Chicago suburb, Brentwood Park, when the current police chief is murdered. As Ruddy settles into his office, a woman is found dead in the Brentwood Park woods, possibly the sixth victim of what we would now call a serial killer. Ruddy's son, Tommy—a brilliant but high-strung sociology student at the University of Chicago who makes Ruddy uneasy because of his difficult temperament—knew one of the murder victims well and has been studying Brentwood Park. In an atmosphere of mounting hysteria in town, Ruddy's unconscious cop mind begins to connect Tommy to the murders. Is it due to some Freudian rivalry between the father and the son, or to the facts of the case? The plot elements and dialogue in this draft are crude, and it's hard to say how the book would have been shaped out of its state of flux. A short introduction from Wright's daughter, Julia, speculates provocatively and notes how Wright brings race, class and family dynamics to bear on Ruddy's actions and thoughts, which he does brilliantly. From Bookmarks Magazine
Richard Wright’s unfinished novel divided critics. Some hailed it as “a prescient examination of the generational and class conflicts that await black Americans as they move from the margins of society into the cultural mainstream” (Washington Post); others panned its wooden dialogue, melodrama, and disappointing exploration of racial identity. They all agreed, however, that Wright would most certainly have tackled these narrative flaws. Despite the novel’s shortcomings, Wright’s admirers will be grateful for the opportunity to hear his voice once more.

He died in 1960.

Wright's Time
By Marcus White
I have always been a fan of Richard Wright. "Black Boy" was one of the first books that I ever read to completion in my early years, along with S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders", and then "Native Son" by Wright. Ponyboy and Bigger made great impressions on me as a rural Mississippi kid with hopes of living somewhere that would remotely resemble a world in motion.

I learned of "A Father's Law" through an online group. Dr. Jerry Ward, Jr. had written a review of the book before it was available to the general public. I placed my order before the book was available and anxiously waited for delivery.

I read this book slowly, because reading this book brought back memories and themes from his earlier works. Expelling them was not to be done. Instead, I weighed them against the lines and tones of the new work. The unfinished story shifted my perception of Mr. Wright away from the racial themes that predominated his other works. Mr. Wright was writing a story that seemed to be freeing him to go beyond doing the necessary work of using literature as a form of protest. He was using literature to create the type of books that made writers great because of how they wrote, and not what they wrote. "A Father's Law" shows progression. Once there was Bigger and now there is Police Chief Ruddy who has a troubled son, Tommy, that echoes the Bigger character-type but who also demonstrates the distance that we now see between generations. The effects of that distance within the story is seen in the actions taken by the son.

The plot of the unfinished novel is an unfinished reality we continue to ponder with, especially regarding youth and crime. Ruddy was able to rise out of the themes Wright presented to us in Native Son and other stories. However, he was successful in using Tommy to show us what we now know by experience and the evening news of the late eighties and nineties which had the young and old facing and moving in different directions.

The book is well done. His daughter, Julia, paid great tribute by completing this project and submitting the manuscript. It is a gift to us all. It ended at a very exciting point in the story. I would be certain to guess that the author was gearing to steer us to a dynamic conclusion. While reading, I thought I'd feel cheated with this being an unfinished novel. I was not cheated at all. Instead, I was left at a crossroad marvelling at the various paths that lay ahead.

Also, The story put me in the mind of Walter Mosely and his Easy Rawlins novels at times. With revisions that would only come with the work that time didn't allow, this book could have been a finished product that would serve as a pivot point in the career of a great writer. "A Father's Law" is a great celebration.

Fascinating Fragment
By Amazon Customer
I'm a pretty big fan of Wright, so I was surprised to see A FATHER'S LAW on the shelf in the store while on vacation (I had no idea it was coming). If you like Wright, it's well worth reading; if you're not familiar with him, it's not likely that you'll care for the book since it is, after all, unfinished--and ends at a crucial point in the action.

For scholars and fans, all the Wright-isms are here: the stream of consciousness, the quick plot turns, the psychological aspects, the pointed dialogue (the racial themes are muted here, though present). It's amazing to me how he was able to make such potboilers as fascinating as did. I knocked off the 260-odd pages in three sittings, and can only imagine where Wright would've taken things had he lived.

Ambivalent
By Todd R. Anderson
I've been fascinated by Wright's work for some time (my Master's thesis is based on analyzing one of his most obscure and scathingly criticized works, THE OUTSIDER, as a work of tragedy rather than as the banal, existential work it is so commonly viewed and limited as being). I, too, was taken aback when I stumbled upon A FATHER'S LAW while on vacation in San Francisco and, immediately, I swiped the only copy off of the shelf. I put my vacation on vacation to read the book. I am still ambivalent about how to receive this work. I realize it is unfinished, and I am unsure was to how "unfinished" it is, but my proclivity for Wright's craft compels me to urge interested readers into reading this work with their expectations on their proverbial sleeve, because it truly gut-wrenching disappointment is not much toward the work's being unfinished, but moreover the author's mortal preclusion from refining his genius just one more time in full.

What a disappointment...
By Pricilla Lucero
I had been looking forward to this book for a long time. As soon as I got it, I cleared my calendar and sat on my couch, practically with a DND sign on my forehead. After all that trouble, I got to say I was very disappointed. I often found myselft thinking "what is Ms. Gray thinking by writing this garbage". She completely veered off the originally story, which is such a shame because Evernight was a great book. After reading this, I'm not sure if I'll be picking up any of Claudia Gray's future books.
