The Stuffing that dreams are made of...

A delightful, exquisitely designed volume that follows the improbable rise of a short, slightly chubby, stuffed bunny rabbit from suburban bedroom to fashion runway to a podium at the Oscars. Along the way "Star" brushes fur with the likes of Bono, Beyonce, and Jean Paul Gaultier. A wonderful tale of desire and "making it," pulled off with nary a mention of the words "carrot" or "hop."

A Precious Treasure

I read a small article about this book in Elle Magazine before it debuted. I pre-ordered it for myself because I thought it would be cute. When I received it, I read it and fell in LOVE! (So in love, I ordered more and gave them as Christmas presents!) I call this book "my precious treasure." It's only a 20 minute read about a white stuffed animal bunny whose name is S.V.B.(complete with a star in her right eye). She tells her story about wanting to become a model, beginning with traveling to NYC, her daily diet, getting a manager, creating her portfolio, the many celebrities she meets and ends with her positive note that you can be what and whoever you want to be as long as you try your very best. Star is just so precious and gives warm fuzzies to anyone who reads it. It's simply fabulous!

Star Von Bunny is intent on making it in New York City as a model. Upon her arrival in NYC, Star quickly learns a few things about the business. First, she drops the Von Bunny, even though she is descended from the famous Von Bunny clan (a small white lie, but since her dossier is made up of many of them, no harm done). She'll be like Twiggy, Cher, Madonna -- a true star by the name of Star. She also signs with Bored Model Management and creates her first calling card, along with several test shots for her portfolio.

Star has some special qualities that could work for or against her in the modeling business. She's beautiful, no doubt, but she's also furry. She's quite short (only 18 inches), but she also has near-perfect measurements (14", 14.5", 13"). She has a tail, but really, what other model in the world can use that as their claim to fame? Star wants to be a famous model, and what Star wants, Star gets.

This is a short, hilarious story of one bunny's attempt to make it big in the world of modeling. Parody or not, it's a fun read, and includes fabulous photos of Star in all her glory, along with many high-society models (although none of them can claim Star's gorgeous white fur and perky tail).

A portion of the proceeds from sales of STAR VON BUNNY will benefit Doctors Without Borders, which is just another reason to pick up a copy of this highly entertaining tale -- or tail.

Two in One

[Three and a half stars] Perhaps because "Michael Stanley" is in fact a two-man team (Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip), their first joint venture, A CARRION DEATH, reads like two books in one: a mystery and a thriller combined. The two genres do not always fit well together, and the result is over-complex and over-long, but there is a great deal to enjoy along the way.

First, the mystery. A body is found near a watering-hole on a Botswanan game reserve, half-eaten by hyenas, all identifying features gone, and partially dismembered. But the hair is that of a white man, and other evidence suggests murder. Assistant Superintendent Kubu drives out from the capital, Gabarone, to investigate. Kubu, whose nickname means hippo, is a huge and hugely likeable man who sings along to opera in his car, has a knowledgeable appreciation of fine food and wine, loves his wife, honors his parents, and is as bright and persistent as they come. Although jaded readers will find echoes of other fictional detectives, the chapters directly involving Kubu, the police process, and his personal foibles are all interesting and enjoyable. So is the Botswana setting, recognizably similar to that of the Alexander McCall Smith series that began with THE NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY, almost equally warm, but less parochial and more recognizably part of the modern world.

The thriller element contains elements of boardroom drama, sexual intrigue, smuggling, backroom manipulation, and blackmail. Most of the characters are connected to the huge Botswana Cattle and Mining Company (BCMC), now being run by Cecil Hofmeyr until his nephew and niece, the twins Angus and Dianna, come into their inheritance on their thirtieth birthday in a few weeks' time. But Cecil has problems, whether stemming from financial irregularities, unsavory events in his past, or dubious practices at a diamond mine that he runs on the side. Although the first chapters introducing the BCMC story come after the discovery of the body, they actually antedate it. The first half of the book jumps backwards and forwards in time, with ramifying subplots and rising tensions, so that the reader is drawn into the game of guessing who the murdered man will turn out to be, which is both unusual and effective.

In some ways, the contrast between the two elements is also that between native and colonial. Kubu represents a class of African professionals who have benefited from educational opportunities to take leadership positions in the modern world, while remaining true to their traditions. BCMC, by contrast, is a company founded by foreign entrepreneurs, now attempting to redefine its place in an independent nation. Although never preachy, the dialectic between these elements is one of the strengths of the book.

Technically, however, this double approach leads to problems. Instead of learning information as the detective discovers it, as in a classic mystery, we also see things from the inside, including the private thoughts of many of the characters. As a result, some revelations become obvious to the reader long before the detective has worked them out -- including, I'm afraid, the basic mystery of the book! Perhaps in compensation, the authors introduce numerous false clues, resulting in an overlong book with more plot layers and shady characters than it can stand. In thriller style, the mayhem increases towards the end of the book, even as the mystery dissipates. Indeed there are so many deaths and disappearances, that the payoff of a normal mystery -- the final scene in which the evildoers are confronted with their crimes -- is no longer available, denying the reader one of the chief pleasures of the genre. Instead, the wrapping-up deals with relatively minor matters and is somewhat anticlimactic.

I gather that more Kubu books are on their way. Perhaps now that Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip have shown us what they can do, they will have no need to put so much into a single novel. Instead, I hope they will simplify their narrative and capitalize on the Botswanan setting, their engaging detective, and the strong sense of community that they build around him.

Atmospheric debut for Botswana detective

A white man's body stripped and left for the hyenas at a Kalahari water hole introduces a complex case for Botswana detective David "Kubu" Benga in Stanley's atmospheric debut.

The condition of the body - missing teeth, no clothes, missing arm - indicates that the killers may have wanted to hide the victim's identity. Kubu's investigation ruffles feathers among the white powers that be at the game preserve and the Botswana Cattle and Mining Company (BCMC), a conglomerate from colonial days that now has little to do with cattle and much to do with diamonds.

Kubu doesn't mind ruffling feathers though he's an easygoing fellow himself who enjoys good food and drink about as much as anyone could - hence the nickname Kubu - which means hippo. Viewpoint shifts between Kubu's investigation and various other characters - killers, schemers, business people, victims and innocents.

The case takes Kubu into boardrooms and across the country's dusty roads and open country. It gives us a look at Africa's complex economic structure, the diamond industry and a feel for the friction between modern and traditional customs.

Kubu is a modern man with a western-style house and habits who honors and respects his parents' conservative old-fashioned ways. He's an engaging character with a likable wife and an absorbing home life.

Stanley's first in the series is a window on a changing Africa, full of the sights, smells and tensions of a place with large disparities between rich and poor, black and white, traditional and modern.

The few problems with this promising debut concern length and pace - Stanley (pseudonym for writing team Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip) gives a bit too much away with his multiple viewpoints and it takes Kubu a bit too long to catch up. An immersing read, nonetheless.

Great story, great location

This is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery novel. Clues are left for you to ponder and puzzle over and if you pay good attention to the right ones, you might guess who the real villain is, my definition of a well written mystery. The ending does not come out of the blue, but rather, if you've been paying attention you will think, "I should have figured that out!" Detective Kubu is a great character, a realistic policeman with both strengths and weaknesses (especially for wine and food). Intertwined with an interesting mystery, of course, is an enjoyable tour of Botswana culture, politics and nature.

La noche que agarré este libro no pude soltarlo hasta que mis ojos leyeron la última oración. Es un libro que describe la simpleza de la vida, y los sentimientos que a todos nos inundan más de una vez. Paulo Coelho describe estas cosas, junto con la importancia de seguir adelante y luchar por nuestros sueños, con una pureza indescriptible, una pureza que te llena y te contagia de esas ganas de vivir, de abrirte a las cosas más importantes que te da la vida. El dice que cuando una persona quiere realmente algo el univerzo entero conspira para que pueda realizar su sueño, lo que no quiere decir que todo va a venir de arriba, sino que tenés que luchar, pero que al final va a valer la pena, porque no solo vas a cumplir tu sueño, sino que vas a llevarte la satifacción de haerlo hecho y lo aprendido por el camino. A mi me cambio la vida

Este libro lo lei cuando estaba en una crucijada personal y espiritual en mi vida. Lo he leido en el original, en portugues, tambien en espanol y en ingles. Me hizo examinar mi propia vida de una forma que nunca antes habia considerado y me ayudo encontrar las fuerzas para tomar unas decisiones para cambiar el camino en que iba mi vida. Hoy en dia es un libro que aun recomiendo para todos-amigos y estudiantes. Desde la primera vez que lo lei, lo he regalado a unos 20 de mis estudiantes para su graduacion del colegio. Lo recomiendo para todo el mundo, no importa si es cristiano, judio, musulman, porque tiene lecciones valiosas para todos nosotros.

Although I didn't end up needing this book, I had bought it for a Summer philosophy course. The book was in great condition with no marks. I was very pleased and even though I ended up switching classes I still enjoy the content of the book!

The Wrong Premise

The introduction claims that to get a picture of any philosopher's thoughts, it is usually best to approach him from a single representative work, but that Hegel is an exception.
That premise is rather shaky at best, most of Hegel's influence has come from his Phenomenology of Spirit, and while some still claim that it is an immature work which he later abandoned, it still makes for a better introduction than this volume.
And then there's the selections. for The Phenomenology, the editors chose to use the Baille translation, which is quite unfortunate. English usage has shifted dramatically form its stilted 1931 usage, and even so, it is full of inconsistencies, so that Hegel's technical use of the German is lost.
The inclusion of the Logic defies it. While reading The Phenomenology may, like Ulysses, require a guide, The Logic is more like Finnegan's wake--completely intractable. Especially to introductory students to which this volume is obviously aimed.
If your interest is Philosophy, read The Phenomenology. If your interest is Politics, read Philosophy of Right. If you're ambitious, and have a lot of time on your hands, read both.

Grotesque

This book is an unmitigated disaster, and Harper Torchbooks should be ashamed of themselves for foisting it onto an unsuspecting public. The principle difficulty arises from the fact that it is impossible to distinguish the words of Hegel from those of Weiss, the editor. No reliable visual cue is provided for the reader, who sometimes finds he has plowed through 5 pages of "Hegel", only to discover they were actually 5 pages of Weiss! To make matters, worse, sections begin and end in an arbitrary fashion that is completely disorienting. In some cases, it genuinely seems pages have been inadvertently omitted! As a result, this "book" is unreadable. This is particularly annoying, since even when Hegel is presented clearly, he is challenging. For Harper Torchbooks to have mutilated his work in this grotesquely ill-designed book is a kind of intellectual crime. If you value your time and money, avoid this book!

Real problems, real drama, real LOVE

The best sign of a good book is when you read the last word, close the book, and sigh.

Three Times Blessed did not disappoint and fans will be sighing with satisfaction after they finish Lori Copeland's latest epic romance.

You are going to want to take this book everywhere you go, so you can pick it up at a moments notice. Very well worth my time and money.

Ms. Copeland did not seem to care about this book. The book did not show much of the same happiness and detail of book one of the series.

She of course had an accident the same way s book one, to start with and of course the hero was angry about that. Her horse got spooked by lightening just like book one of the series. Now could the author really not think of another way to start the book?

There was no real point of which the hero and heroine got together at all, He was too busy moping all along the story.

Sloppy, sloppy writing. I had to give this two stars, because it was better than bok three of the series. Not much better but a bit better.

Lacking Depth

I was disappointed in this second book of Ms Copeland's "Three Times Blessed", because I never could find any real feelings between Audrey Pride and Eli Gray. Why she kept mooning after him, I don't know.

Also, the first book was funny, but this one wasn't. It lacked depth, as though the author was in a hurry to get it done.

I will read her third book "One True Love", and hope she picks up on the above relationship of Audrey and Eli. If she doesn't, I will really be disappointed.

About the Author

Born in the United States, Karen Dawn grew up and studied in Australia. She pursued a science degree colloquially tagged "rats and stats," so she knows firsthand that views and habits can shift. She hopes her furry subjects will shine forgiving blessings upon this book.

She worked as a news researcher and writer for Australia's national nightly news magazine show The 7:30 Report, then moved to New York, where she played the downtown music scene—and made fruit salad at the Saint Francis of Xavier soup kitchen every Sunday. After reading Animal Liberation she was moved to devote her efforts to those most abused by society and least able to help themselves—the animals.

Karen founded the animal advocacy media watch DawnWatch.com. As a spokesperson for the animal rights movement she has appeared on MTV and hosted talk shows on major radio stations. Her opinion pieces have been published in leading newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. This is her first book.

What's all the Fuss about Animal Rights?

What brilliance! It is by far the best, most practical, balanced, logical, and well written book on animal rights and animal welfare I have ever come across. I have read many. Karen Dawn writes that it's not "all or nothing" that there are compassionate steps we all can make -- every one of us. It answered all my questions about many areas of animal abuse I wasn't aware of. It's important to know what your money supports when you patron places like Sea World or the Circus. How about that fur collar? It might come from a dog or cat. It might be labeled fake, but really be from a domesticated animal. What about the horse meat industry? Cattle ranching supports horse slaughter. Love horses? Don't eat cows. Seriously. It's all connected.

All people, meat eaters too, can take steps to help animals live better. You learn about this in a very, very insightful way with humor and compassion. There's no name calling or holier than thou in this book. Karen rocks!

It's not about perfection, it's about progression.

Grade 9 Up—Jesse, Vicks, and Mel spontaneously decide to take a road trip to visit Vicks's boyfriend who is in college in Miami. Jesse and Vicks have been friends for ages, but now there is a wedge between them. Jesse is a devout Christian who frowns on drinking and premarital sex; her unmarried mother calls her Goody Two-shoes and Vicks is getting fed up with her friend's "holier than thou" attitude. In fact, this is a large focal point of the story, and readers are sometimes left to wonder why they are still best friends, and when and how Jesse became so religious. Mel is a wealthy newcomer who has offered to pay for the trip, hoping to be accepted by them. Once they get into the car, infighting (and outright fighting) takes over. Still, the girls have wild adventures, including a party at which Vicks and Mel get drunk, a hurricane, a fistfight, and a run-in with a live alligator in order to save a baby duckling. Through confrontations with one another, with boys, and with family, the teens work through the issues they are facing and learn the importance of relying on friends. The presentation of three voices is effective since they come from three different authors, giving readers a variety of perspectives to consider. Teen book with depth

I have been on a run of good luck in the last few weeks - reading books that have been interesting and fun at the same time.

I am an adult who enjoys reading a good Young Adult (teen) book. Unfortunately, when I was that age, the selections were very limited - now, teens have a much broader choice.

How to Be Bad was a pleasant surprise for me. I don't normally enjoy reading a book where there are 3 separate voices taking turns telling their story - which is the case here.

How to Be Bad introduces us to 3 very different girls and through their voices (each was written by a different author and we do not get to find out who is who until the very end of the book), you will get a slightly different perspective on a road trip that they have decided to embark on together.

Indeed, Vicks, Jesse and Mel work together and are all the same age, but only Vicks and Jesse are really close friends. On the spur of the moment, for various personal reasons, all three of the girls end up on a three day road trip in a beat up station wagon. Jesse needs to get away from her mother and her illness, Vicks needs to find out what is going on with her suddenly "hard to reach" boyfriend and Mel just seems to have a desperate need to make friends.

As we follow our girls on the road, experiencing their ups and downs, crying for them and with them and cheering them on, we get a coming of age story that is both heartwarming and funny.

The open road becomes a bit of a metaphor for what the girls are living and while this ride is only a three day weekend, in the end, it is enough to give them all important insights into what is important and what can be left by the side of the road.

Well written, intriguing (which author is actually writing which part?)with genuine emotion, this book was a treat

HOW TO BE BAD is the perfect book for a girl-bonding summer road trip adventure!

Three girls, each with their own internal struggles, head out on a weekend road trip to Miami to visit the one girl's boyfriend. Vicks and Jesse are best friends. Mel is the newcomer but envies the friendship Vicks and Jesse share and invites herself along for the trip, offering to pay for lodging, snacks, and fuel.

Jesse is dealing with her mother's recent cancer diagnosis. She wants more than anything to tell Vicks, for they share everything, but hasn't been able to bring herself to do it.

Vicks is trying to not be a needy girlfriend. Her boyfriend has left for freshman year of university and has barely contacted her in the two weeks he's been gone. She misses him terribly and is convinced he's fooling around with a hot college girl.

Mel's family has just moved to Florida from Montreal, Canada. Florida is an entirely different world to her. She is reserved and lives in the shadow of her popular older sister. She desperately wants to break out of her shell, but doesn't know how. She hopes some of Vicks' outgoing personality will rub off on her.

They begin their trip Friday once Vicks gets off work. Jesse takes her mom's car without proper permission, and the three are off. Their adventures bring them to a giant preserved alligator, a cute hitchhiker, a house party with too much alcohol, Disney World, and a few other places along the way.

As will happen when confined with each other for far too long in a way too hot car, tempers flair, emotions erupt, and friendships are solidified.

HOW TO BE BAD is creatively written in alternating chapters by three popular authors. The story flows seamlessly between each chapter, making the reader curious as to which character belongs to which author. The story is emotional, triumphant, and you come away feeling like you've just received a great big hug. Each author is amazing on her own merits, but as a team, they've taken it up a notch and have written a fantastic book. One that every girl and her best friends will come to love.

Fabulous Book from Fabulous Author Trio

Jesse, Vicks, and Mel are all residents of not-so-appropriately-named Niceville, Florida. Jesse is fed up with her mother and just wants to get away. Vicks, the wild one, misses her boyfriend who left for college two weeks ago. Mel is the rich but sweet girl who just wants to make friends. Somehow these three coworkers end up on a weekend road trip. Jesse provides the car, Mel has the cash, and Vicks encourages the spontaneity and excitement. Though the destination is Miami, pit stops and detours will be made, leading them into disasters or unexpected solutions. This road trip will alter their friendships and even the way they view life.

Though I have previously read novels by only one-third of the fabulous authors who wrote How to Be Bad, I knew from the first moment I heard that E. Lockhart, Sarah Mlynowski, and Lauren Myracle were writing a novel together that their book would be mandatory reading material for me. And I most definitely wasn't disappointed. I loved how each chapter was told from one of the girl's point-of-view (even though I did get confused a couple of times). Jesse, Vicks, and Mel were each wonderfully crafted and developed; I loved how they were so unique and complemented each other. The plot was a perfect mix of romance, friendship and personal issues, emotional realizations, and even physical danger. I really enjoyed the random details too, because it made the story all the more realistic. If I had one problem with How to Be Bad, it was that Jesse's religious fervor didn't always seem to fit with her character until the end of the story. However, this didn't diminish the fact that How to Be Bad was simply a fantastic novel.

How to Be Bad has a little bit of something for everyone, and I most definitely recommend it. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I am motivated to read up on the two-thirds of this author team whose works I have not read yet (Sarah Mlynowski and Lauren Myracle, I confess). If you've ever enjoyed a novel by any one of these awesome authors or are up for a great read, then get How to Be Bad. I promise you won't regret it!
